I've had a few meals here it's always very hit and miss. If you have children over 6 years old please expect to pay adult price for them as menu states children under 6 then goes straight to adult price on the Sunday carvery! So a 7/8 year old is classed as a adult 🤔

I stayed at The highwayman whilst visiting friends, they’d booked the pub for a podcast get together( In the doghouse ) give it listen you won’t be disappointed. My room was en-suite, very clean and well laid out and was approx 100 yards from the entrance. There is a great selection of beers, ciders (as you would expect in Somerset). From checking in to checking out the staff were great, very friendly and polite. I’d certainly stay here again.

Had a groupon voucher which I paid £89, when I arrived at the highwayman I was told that I hadn't paid anything and was charged £73, when I got home i checked my bank account and my groupon account and I had paid for it, I contacted the highwayman through email numerous times and tried phoning but they didn't pick up or answer my emails, even after me saying I would publish it on social media and leave them a comment on here. I also contacted groupon and all they kept saying was contact the highwayman direct. Hence I wouldn't use groupon again or stay at the highwayman inn.

We arrived 30 mins before our dinner table booking for 7.30. On arrival at the bar we were amazed to find that there was no beer on tap other than lager, all the labels were facing away from us. We had to pay for our meals before being seated and it soon became apparent that they couldn't accommodate us. There was no fish, no cottage pie and only three sirloin steaks! we got no further, those who had paid demanded and received refunds. We left and went next door where our last minute booking was handled with aplomb.

We dropped in on our way back home on a Monday evening. The pub looked reasonably busy so we decided to order our mealsWe then had a 40 minute wait for my starter which was 5 tempura prawns. No warning of the long wait was givenUnfortunately, the arrival of the starter meant a further 40 minutes for our main meals - therefore meaning a 1 hour and 20 minute wait for my husband who hadn't ordered a starter As if this wasn't bad enough my cheddar ploughmans came with a large piece of ham fatTo be fair to the pub, I did contact them and they were very apologetic and said they would investigate and get back to me. Had meals here while travelling through, although the pub was quiet apart from staff eating and drinking we waited over 45 minutes for our four meals. The "fresh" cod was previously frozen and pretty much past its use by date, the oven chips were chewy and tasteless and the prawns had a strange taste to them and I doubt they were fresh from the freezer let alone the sea! Pub needs a refurb, as very dated, and the staff congregating noisily while the music was loud made for a raucous afternoon. Oh and take care when entering the car park as the pot holes are rather deep! Tyre damaging deep. All in all not a place I would call into again when passing. Carry on to Glastonbury and go in the

Called in for lunch on Tuesday 4th June 2019. Spacious premises with attractive decor, good furnishings and spotless toilets. There is a scale model of a stagecoach suspended from the entrance passageway to the toilets. The menu was very comprehensive including a two meals for £10 offer on selected meals, which is the option I went for. I 'stood and delivered' the order to a friendly and helpful young lady behind the bar and there were no 'hold ups ' in the service. Meals quality was excellent for the price paid. If I could give zero stars I would. From the moment we walked in we should of just walked straight back out. The woman who served us couldn’t of been anymore miserable if she had tried, didn’t get one single smile out of her. There was 2 people in front of us and they were dishing up 6 takeaway carverys, the man serving them was getting snappy with them and if I was them I’d have told him to forget about his food and walked out. At one point he handed them a mixed meat carvery and all she said was ‘is that the mixed meat one’ and he snapped back and said ‘that’s what I said isn’t it?’ with that he shook his head. I got 3 of the tiniest, fattiest bits of meat I’ve ever seen, the rest of the food actually looked ok, oh how looks can deceive!! Both me and my partner had to cover our food in salt just to get a little flavour. The stuffing balls and Yorkshire puddings I’m guessing were Tesco value (they were actually the best thing on the plate) I couldn’t even cut the beef so had to pull it apart, the potatoes were soggy and flavourless, the veg was ok but hard, and the gravy I can only describe as dirty water, having absolutely no flavour and having the same consistency as water too. It’s sad because the pub itself has great potential just not with the members of staff if has now. Would never return or recommend.

I never wanted to come here again but my grandmother insisted it was good value for money and good service.. so I decided we'd give it another go. I'm not going back now. I would rather bring my own food when visiting my grandmother!! The service was slightly better this time around then my last visit but still not the normal standard you'd expect. I don't understand the décor in that place.. is there wallpaper on the ceiling? Made my eyes feel funny when looking around. Lush old pots and cups around the top of the seating area covered in dust and not very pleasing to look at. I had the burger that we'll extremely overpriced for what it was. It was one of those burgers you put in the microwave for 5 minutes and get out and shove onto a bun with grated carrots (why..) onions, lettuce and purple cabbage?? Why? All you need is lettuce and some onions. Also why only 1 menu per table? I had to lean over and steal another menu from another table. My grandmother likes it there that's why I gave it 2 stars instead of 1.

Walking in all seemed well, a nice cozy open fire and plenty of clean tables. Once sat noticed that there was one menu per table so as there was three of us I reached over to the empty table behind to grab another one. A man approached and quite aggressively advised that we had a menu on our table and then rolled his eyes and shook his head as he walked away returning to behind the bar where he continued to stare at us whilst drinking his pint! Decided to stay and eat, normally we would have walked with such rudeness but one of the party was an elderly lady. I approached the bar to order drinks and food and was met with all I can describe as a grunt from the barmaid who smelt so strongly of BO i had to move back from the bar. The food it self was good value for money but the plates were slammed on the table by the same lady that had taken the order at the bar and without a word said and never returned to the table to check if we were ok. Will never return, every one in the party was disgusted by the embarrassing lack of customer service.

On the 4th of January 2017, I went to the Highwayman in Shepton with friends to watch Chelsea vs Spurs. I had only been there once before and the experience was pleasant. A few minutes after sitting down we went to order drinks, I had a little glass of non alcoholic ginger beer, which I finished in a matter of minutes, when someone who I at first didn't know was the landlord took my empty glass away within minutes of being drunk and told me ''goodbye''. I was confused and said, ''excuse me?'', he would then abruptly say ''Have you got a hearing problem?'' to which I was amazed, me and my friends then asked why I had to leave (it was just me he wanted to leave in particular) he replied saying that I basically was uninsured and that if the bar burnt down that would be bad for me...?. I said I would get some tap water, he would then say that I would have to pay for it since he pays for the water tax, the barmaid on shift said that he couldn't charge me for tap water but he insisted on me paying 50 pence for the water, I would have left but I didn't want to since I was there to watch the football, so I payed. He left a short while after Spurs scored and that was that. This experience was truly astonishing and I have never encountered this kind of drunk abuse before, the woman behind the bar did apologise which I'm thankful for. I recommend anyone who goes to The Highwayman in Shepton Mallet to steer clear of this restaurant when the landlord is present.

We had travelled down from Preston to Glastonbury and we were stuck in a traffic jam due to the weather . It took us 12 hours so my son decided to call in here and get some chips for him and his friends to share( I had to wait in the traffic queue) .The place was not busy and he said there were lots of tables available. He paid and sat down with his two friends. I do understand that this was not a big order however the issue I have is the way they were spoken to. The boys are highly intelligent, responsible, and from decent families. Whilst waiting the owner came over and asked them what they had ordered. When they said they were going to share the chips,he didn't allow them to stay and whilst rudely giving him his money back, told them to get out!!!! Why was the order taken in the first place ?? And why are adults rude to teenagers? My son was embarrassed and felt aggrieved at being spoken to in such a manner- if the order was not big enough he should have been told at the till point not at the table or told that they were not doing snacks just main meals. Manners do not cost anything but in this case it has cost a bad review.

I've been here a few times over the years. It hasn't improved. The staff have a take it or leave it attitude, the food is so-so and the whole place needs redecorating. Okay for a pint but other than that, don't bother.

Only stopped for three days but ate in each evening. Well laid out menu, good food that was well prepared, cooked and served up. Look out for Thursday nights, 2 sirloin steaks with all the trimmings and a bottle of house wine, £25.00 Beautiful. Well done for every meal we ate there.

Just about okay for a pint, but the whole place has a very seedy feel to it, not the sort of place I would ever consider eating, there are plenty of other watering holes in the area, and a choice of local decent dining, try the Thatched Cottage down the road, or the restaurant at Charlton House, fish and chips from Whitstone's minutes away, also lovely Indian restaurant in the town, Mughal Empire.

Four of us called here today for early tea we were a little concerned that there was no other patrons there but ordered our meals from a very helpful person serving behind the bar, which i must add seemed well stacked with a good selections of drinks, the food menu is quite varied with also a special board,we ordered several different meals and drinks. Our meals were served quickly and what a surprise they prove to be they all were one of the best meals we have had in a very long time,i ordered the fish and it was one of biggest pieces of fish i have purchased and was well cooked being nice and crispy another point the food was piping hot served on warm plates.Other meals were, gammon and chicken and matched the fish. The prices charged including drinks were very reasonable so to sum up this was a 1st class meal, served by very friendly staff,in comfortable surroundings and will certainly return in the near future.

Had lunch here. Three of us had carvery. The positives. Big car park, nice warm fire, pleasant bar staff. Plenty of vegetables.Negatives. The man serving the meat was morose. My two slices of beef were tiny and had lots of fat. There was such a small bit left I was suprised he managed two slices The pork had by my husband and mother was so tough they could hardly cut it. The potatoes were taken out the back whilst we watched to tip the fat out of the serving dish. Stuffing balls seemed like Paxo. Nice cauliflower cheese. Undercooked red cabbage. Leeks, cabbage and swede were ok. Gravy tasteless. In fact one of the worst carveries ever. Oh, and no crackling left. We have driven past many times and will now do so again

We have been to this pub a couple of times and it has been fine, the man behind the bar has always been off... But this visit, we booked a table for 13 and told them most of us would be carvery, we turned up at the bar ordered drinks booked in with our table and was told it was the long one in the front, no one showed us to it, we all sat down, no one bought any menus, the lady came over to ask if we we're ready to order I told her no my daughter had just gone to get menus. We then went to get our carvery's and they had ran out of Turkey and people in our group had not got a Yorkshire they ran out of veg, we were then told to come back in 10 mins and stuff would be out..... So half our party had food and other half didn't .this was at 1pm on a Sunday 13th dec.and we had booked weeks ago.. The plates were cold, so food was very quickly cold. The man behind the bar didn't actually speak when we ordered drinks, 2 early teens of the party were just left waiting at the bar for a drink he just looked at them and looked away. When the veg came out the veg was crunchy.. We will not go back. Just a very unpleasant man and chaos in the kitchen...what a way to run a pub... And yes our party has experience of running a pub....our view try somewhere else first..

We were staying at a B&B down the road, having past by a couple of times, we called in for dinner. The young barmaid who took our order, had to write it all down and then check it all back with me as she put it through the till. When we ordered our desserts, I was charged £2 for an over ripped banana with a bit of toffee sauce on, as my grandson doesn't like ice-cream.The Landlord was a football fan, had the TV on loudly, regardless, as to whether his customers wanted to watch or hear the football.Won't be going back, as can't afford those kind of prices more than once.

I visited with a friend to have a drink and a meal whilst watching the football on the TV as we were visiting the area and wanted to watch our team. There were about 20 people trying to follow the game but after twice asking for the volume to be increased from nil to audible we were rudely told it was loud enough - well not for the customers watching it wasn't.Rude and unfriendly, we finished our drinks, decided not to give our custom to the restaurant and left.

Arrived here lost, a lovely woman behind the bar was really helpful, even printed out the instructions for us from Google, a very big thank you. Would like to be able to say we had a good meal, but it was pretty awful actually, not sure if it was the food we choose...a curry and a pasta dish...but even for pub bulk standard fare it really wasn't very good. But the beer and the staff were lovely, again thank you for saving us!

After paying for breakfast, sitting down at our table and plugging our phones in at the available sockets, the landlady/owner shouts from the bar sarcastically 'yes you can plug your phones in'. Blown away by her rude manner, we both ignored her. She then brought over our (average) sausage sandwiches and repeated herself, 'yes you can plug your phones in- do you get your electricity free at home?'. 5 mins later an employee calls in sick and she loudly threatens that he'll lose his job if he doesn't come in. Clearly a pressured business- unpleasant atmosphere (the younger boy working there was lovely, however!)

This was our first visit to the highwayman Inn, I took my wife, daughter and 3 granddaughters out for a meal, we were driving around Shepton Mallet looking for a nice place to have a meal, we called in one pub that served food, the welcome was very cold and the person behind the bar wasn't very welcoming so rather than stay there we left and looked for another pub that served meals and we came across the Highwayman. On our arrival at the Highwayman we had ample parking for our cars in a large car park. As soon as we entered we noticed how pleasant the dining area was ,we seated and within a very short time we were greeted by a professional well trained waitress, she was also very pleasant to chat too. We all ordered our meal and it wasn't long before the food was delivered to our table and it was very well presented food as well I may add. The food was delicious and I'm speaking on behalf of 6 of us who all agreed the food was very well presented and tasted as good as it looked, even my 3 year old granddaughter enjoyed her meal and didn't waste any for a change and there was ample food for everyone. If you are in the Shepton Mallett or surrounding area then I highly recommend you pay the Highwayman a visit. Great place and very pleasant and well trained staff.

I had dinner here one evening and would recommend it. The restaurant has several large, spacious dining areas with plenty of windows which was nice and bright as I visited on a sunny day. There is also a couple of fairly large patio areas with more seating & tables. The bar area is large and the menu varied with daily specials in addition to the printed menu. For GBP25.12 I enjoyed a bottle of Peroni, home made broccoli & Stilton soup with a mini loaf and a main course of steak, ale & mushroom pie with mash and 4veg covered in a delicious gravy. The servings were generous and I left well satisfied and full. The owners (I think?), chef and waitress all took the time to speak to me and ensure I was happy with my meal, which I assured them I was. I could not fault the food or the service and the atmosphere, especially with it being such a bright day, made for a very pleasant dinner hour. Should I have occassion to I would certainly visit again to sample more of their menu, highly recommend.
