Visited Fowey Hall for afternoon tea- a birthday gift. Sat infront of lovely fire, with friendly attentive staff. Tea was a little disappointing, sandwiches were good but could have been a little more ‘traditional’. Scones were warm and fresh with nice jam and cream. The rest......10 small ‘sponge’ cakes all the same just with slightly different ‘filling’ -some just left plain! Not what I would expect from afternoon tea-I could have done better! Afternoon tea should be a special experience and I have had some amazing teas but this wasn’t one!

Had a lovely afternoon at Fowey Hall for an afternoon tea. Good sandwiches and desserts and the warm scones were very nice. Only slight negative was that we had booked a table but when we got there the dining room was full so we had to sit in the lounge which was lovely and quiet but just not as comfortable to sit at when eating.

Came here for afternoon tea and it was good once we got them both. The sandwiches and scone were excellent. There was a bit of an accident, our double afternoon tea was given away to another table (lucky people!) and we got a single portion. We didn't think we have to share 1 of everything including the scone and had to point it out to staff. Once they knew they were quick to sort it out but a shame it ended up with us waiting about 20 minutes for the second portion after the first was brought to us.

After booking an afternoon tea for 2 pm for my birthday, we arrived at 1.40 , early , to have a drink. We attempted to order a drink which resulted in a 20 minute wait before any result. 4 staff later we managed to get a drink. We told the lady at 1.40 that we were booked in for the afternoon tea for 2 pm. It got to 2.40 and we still hadn’t had our food delivered so we decided to cancel. To add insult to injury , we were charged £28 for 2 wines and 2 beers which included a 10 % service charge for the poorest service we have had in a long while. What a big birthday disappointment.

Very difficult to decide whether to give this restaurant two or three stars; two because of the standard relative to the cost or three because it was what it was. Which was a lovely dining room, mixed service at best and OK though rather uninspiring food, especially for the money. And what restaurant only serves 125ml glasses of wine? This is an expensive restaurant and the environment was lovely. Some of the serving staff seemed a bit off-hand, and others rather unimaginative and slightly humourless. But the food really wasn't very special, and the wine was London West End prices plus.By all means go for a special occasion, which we did, however, I hope you'll enjoy the experience more than we did.

After much deliberation over where to celebrate our 40th wedding anniversary we unfortunately chose The Fowey Hall Hotel. First impression was of a genteel but somewhat faded country house hotel. We we invited to sit on the veranda to partake of a pre dinner drink which was beautiful as the view and the weather was as good as many places we have visited in the Mediterranean.Dinner was ordered and we were duly asked into the dining room, I thought I was going into the storage area for an antique fair. Only three tables were being used so perhaps we should have been concerned about what was about to follow. The starters were very good but the mains were an utter disaster. We both ordered the roast beef with all the trimmings. Both meals were completely different, neither were the same - apparently one was ordered as gluten free!! Perhaps I am picky but I would expect vegetables to be presented in serving dishes not put on the plate prior to being brought to the table. Also we prefer to put gravy on at our leisure not to have it on the plate when meal presented. The biggest bug bear was the indifferent attitude by some of the staff who were dressed inappropriately for table service, some in denims which seemed very out of keeping for the style of hotel. All in all a discount was made after we complained but the staff have left a bitter taste as we were expecting so much better.

went for a friends birthday afternoon tea she had been given a gift voucher. We were located in what appeared to be a conservatory but quickly it was obvious it was the throughfare to the terrace so by the end it felt like we were in a corridor . The sandwhiches were poor quality, scantily filled and non descript. my cucumber and ?? sandwhich was mostly cucumber skin. The scones and macaroon were OK but the rest of the cakes all seemed to be brown , we did not even bother to take away . We always had to ask for more tea/coffee rather than it being on tap . The delay in leaving this is I wanted the person who bought the voucher to know first and they have been away . I suspect the hotel is trying to attract familes and afternoon tea ambience and quality is clearly not a priority. Not a place for ladies who want a special birthday tea.

I was really hoping the food was going to be good here. Unfortunately, the menu was trying to be overly sophisticated but the delivery was poor. A scallop starter was spoilt by a disappointing sauce when really a much simpler dish would have sufficed. A similar story with a steak main course. A lot going on but not well executed. The room itself was attractive, though. The staff seemed a little overwhelmed even when it wasn’t that busy. A lot of waiting; to order food, then drinks, then the bill. They could halve the choices on the menu and it would probably make for a better experience. On the upside the staff were friendly and, as I’ve said previously, a really nice dining room.

We went for lunch in January expecting the food and service to match the rating of the hotel. It was very disappointing, While it was January, the gardens and hotel building itself have not been looked after. We were shunted into a small room which was not the main dining room that didn’t have a table that could fit our group. It meant we were sat on two table that didn’t fit together while the dining room was empty (is it just to look at?). The menu was poor and food overpriced (we ordered a crab salad that was mainly mayonnaise to hide the lack of crab meat - for £22). The staff did not seem to think they had to make any effort for what is supposed to be a 5 star hotel. They were dressed to sit a home and watch Netflix on their sofa rather than represent a supposed charming hotel. And the only word for the toilets is disgusting. So a big disappointing for a hotel with a great location, lovely building and which should be a gem.

As we asked if we could have Twiggy with us we were asked if we were happy if they set a table in the morning room for us. We were so delighted, a beautifully set candlelit table, with a blanket and water bowl on the floor beside us for Twiggy. From our expertly mixed G&T cocktails to the wonderfully prepared and stylishly served fresh, delicious food, everything was just superb. The staff were attentive and truly interested in our opinions and so knowledgable during our discussions on wine. We would honestly give a 5/5 score... We booked afternoon tea for 4 people several months in advance, to coincide with our holiday, using a gift voucher from a friend. When we arrived I informed the waitress of our booked and she asked whether we wanted to sit inside or outside. I asked if we could sit on a table on the outside terrace and she informed me she would clear a table recently vacated. We sat down at another table to wait for it to be clear. After about 5-10 minutes another waitress approached us and asked if we wanted anything. I said yes we had booked a table for afternoon tea and was waiting for the table on the terrace to be cleared. She looked over and said it was clear, so we approached the table to find it had not been wiped from the last customers. I had to ask a waitress if it could we wiped. The table had not be prepared for us to sit down with serviettes, knives and folks and there was no table cloth on the table. This might have been because we were sat outside, but we were only a few feet from the inside tables which had nice white table cloths on them. The afternoon tea was served in a way that lacked finesse. When I've had afternoon tea in other hotels, the waiter has taken the time to explain what was in the sandwiches. The sandwiches were made with bread which was dry in places with crusts which had not quite been cut off fully. I couldn't even tell you what the contents was is some of them, but they were not nice. The scones were nice and the cake selection not bad. My daughter almost ate a rotten strawberry which was on top of one of the cakes. She also ordered a hot chocolate which was so sweet she couldn't drink it. It's such a shame as afternoon tea is often booked by people to celebrate a birthday or other special occasion as it was in our case and we were not made to feel expected or welcomed. The hotel itself is stunning to look at and is in the most amazing location in Fowey. The views just speak for themselves.

I mentioned on booking lunch that we were celebrating a birthday and requested a window table. Despite the restaurant being completely empty and there being an abundance of huge windows we were seated next to the very smallest window in the place with barely any view due to the elaborate curtains, in a very enclosed area just about big enough to accommodate the table with entrance to the main part of the restaurant blocked by a large pot plant, this certainly didn't allow us to feel the relaxed atmosphere or experience the unique character mentioned on the website. Hard to believe one could feel so claustrophobic in such an enormous place. Foodwise, starters OK, main course tasty but very sparing. We supped one of the least expensive wines a Malbec at £30 a bottle A VERY disappointing experience for the best part of £90 for a Sunday Lunch for 3 which I had hoped would have been a bit special for my daughter’s birthday. Left feeling very deflated, depressed and rather upset.

Went for afternoon which was a birthday present from my son, we only live 20 mins away so getting there was easy, wish I could say the same for parking. The entrance is very nice big Xmas tree and lovely big fire, staff very nice and helpful. One thing the chap who brought our plates etc just put them on the table and left it to us to place them out. The tea was a while in coming as there was a mix up in the kitchen but we were offered a glass of wine, which was very nice. The main reason for the review is it was full of children, now don't get me wrong I love kids but there was a lot of nosie. I understand it's a family & dog friendly hotel but I rather wish we had been told they were very busy. Living so close they could have phoned and told us then we would have rebooked for another time. The place also look as if it could do with a new coat of paint and the windows in the morning room did let the wind in rather.

We were at Fowey Hall Hotel for an afternoon tea to celebrate our wedding anniversary. First impressions were very favourable - the hotel is in a wonderful position overlooking Fowey and the estuary. We were told on arrival to choose a seat anywhere inside or outside on the terrace and someone would come and find us. Quite quickly our order was taken and within a very short time our very nice tea was brought to us - a selection of sandwiches, scones with jam and cream and many cakes. In fact there were too many cakes for us to get through and ended up taking a box of them home! From the time we were given our tea, not one person came near to see if everything was OK. The one or two staff members coming in and out always seemed to be looking elsewhere, so we couldn't catch their eye to request another fresh pot of tea. Eventually we did manage it, but we felt that it was rather a bother for him to do it and box our cakes up - not even a smile or "was everything alright"! Previous reviewers have commented on the friendly staff - perhaps they are to their resident guests, but we saw very little of this or any service.

The menu isn't huge, and isn't particularly exciting to be honest, but everything we ordered was cooked well and presented in an elegant fashion, everything tasted fresh and full of flavours. I had monkfish tempura which was very light, followed by lemon posset with rhubarb and ?ginger and cumin biscuits. The only negative was that they charge for bread/oil and balsamic vinegar - you are not told this before it is delivered to your table...bit cheeky and a bit tacky especially considering the fact that food and particularly wine is expensive. We were looking forward to a couple of nights of quiet rest and top quality food. The room was great and the staff excellent. Unfortunately the food was a let down. The 'Autumn menu' gave us the feeling that the food was prepared in advance and not reviewed regularly. If we had stayed longer we would have struggled to find food we wanted to eat ....

Delicious food, using local produce, cooked to perfection and presented beautifully. Great service. Staff were happy to keep a bottle of Camel Valley Sparkling wine for us to have over a couple of days.

I went here for dinner last night. Exceptionally good in all respects. A nice welcome, canapés over wine in the lounge while looking at the menu. Smoked mackerel pate was fantastic the crab thermidor was to die for ( just so much better than lobster which I think is overrated and over priced in general). My wife had the fish soup and the duck, both were perfect. Good wine and lovely service. The place was busy and it was nice seeing children sitting down for a proper meal and being well behaved. I can't comment on cost as I was a guest and my menu left the prices off - an old fashioned but nice touch- Last place I ate at that did that was the Post Office Tower in London - remember that?

We were looking to only have cream tea, we sat outside on the veranda with our menus for 20 minutes and no one came to serve us, (even though the waitress was waiting on another table near us), so we lust got up and left. We were very disappointed because the view was terrific, and the building itself was in a beautiful and peaceful setting.

The restaurant had trouble finding our reservation despite having made it the previous day and confirming it the next morning. However, we were seated and waited on by a woman who did not understand English very well. We managed to get our bottle of wine ordered correctly and with a little difficulty got our food order placed. Husband's fish soup first course was very good. I had the lobster risotto special which was good, not great, and served luke warm. There was not much to choose from for main courses, just 7 or 8 items. I guess it doesn't matter if there are only 2 things on the menu if they happen to be things you like. We both settled on Aubergine Milanese. It was luke warm on arrival. It included 5 gnocchi and a little sauce. It was nicely presented, aubergine slices folded attractively into a flower like shape. Inside the small pieces of aubergine were tender and tasty, as were the gnocchi, The long outer strips of aubergine were tough. By now we were almost 3 weeks into our vacation and when I rank this dinner against every other dinner, it comes close to the bottom. It wasn't bad, just not very good. The restaurant itself is attractive with nice linen tablecloth and napkins.

Excellent food in elegant surroundings. The staff were very helpful and although a family hotel the children eating were in a separate dining room and so did not interfere with those without children

What kind of hotel let's you phone and book a table for dinner with children, and then turns you away when you arrive with nothing more than a very insincere 'sorry'. Fowey Hall Hotel - thanks a bunch. After driving for an hour through heavy traffic we were looking forward to dinner and a relaxing evening. On arrival we were told that we couldn't have dinner and that we had never made a reservation. Could it have been my imagination that I had spoken to someone? No, the number and time of the call was recorded on my phone. The call definitely happened, as did the call my sister in law made a couple of hours later adding another 3 to our table. What kind of reservation system does this hotel use? Is it a book? Is it a computer? Is it non existent? The result was I had 3 very upset and hungry children on my hands, and I was stuck over an hour away from home. Pathetic service. Avoid it unless you want to be disappointed.

We were in the area & decided to escape the rain relax with a glass of wine & enjoy the fabulous vista over Fowey. The public areas appear more shabby than chic with dirty windows, sticky furniture & remains of food & cutlery on tables & the floor. Lots of staff standing around around talking to each other & doing very little.Several families staying at the hotel with young children were there during our visit but there appeared to be a lack of camaraderie amongst the children or adults. In fact they didn't seem to acknowledge each other at all.Which I found to be quite strange.Perhaps things will be different with the advent of the school holidays.

Firstly let me say the setting and Fowey is lovely, but as for the staff at the hotel and making you feel valued, they score 1 out of 10. The day we visited, there were not more than 10 people ordering tea, some of whom were like us using vouchers for a special present.

My partner and I dined at Fowey Hall on Father's Day 2014, and this report is not coloured because my daughters telephoned prior to my arrival and pre paid for the meal for Fathers Day, but the reception was warm and welcoming, we sat outside and had a pre meal drink overlooking Fowey Harbour which is a view to remember.

We had two meals in the restaurant during our three night stay. The first was excellent, the second very good but not quite as good as the first. I would have liked it had the menu changed just a little but if you're staying in the hotel would definitely recommend having at least one meal there

Stopped by as a meeting point to go on further to hen weekend. Weather was gorgeous and the views are amazing, it could be mistaken as a caribbean resort from outside. We sat outside, took a while to be seen to but once we had Sam who served us was very polite and very informal about the area to which we knew nothing about. The cream tea was very very nice and I think we all wished we were staying there.

Had an exquisite afternoon tea at Fowey Hall on the day of the terrible storm. As the wind whistled outside we shared Darjeeling, fresh coffee and a stand of homemade cakes, hot scones and clotted cream, lounging on sofas before a real fire. It wasn't just the food, it was the pure-English fine-hotel atmosphere and the charming service. A sublime experience I would recommend to anyone.

We used to love popping in here when we were in Truro, you would be lucky to get a seat but now it’s take your pick. In a nutshell the place has lost its soul.

Festive Afternoon Tea this afternoon was very disappointing. It is clearly a stop gap to keep income trickling in between Sunday lunch and evening dinner service. The biggest issue is with the service, very inattentive, unconcerned staff not in the slightest bit interested in providing a professional level of attention. The afternoon tea was acceptable but not exactly delightful let alone memorable or to be recommend to others. Delightful setting with the hotel beautifully appointed and well decorated for Christmas, just a pity the staff were not switched on at all. Management at fault and it would appear no investment made in staff training.
