This may have once been a good restaurant but it no longer is. The food was at best average and at worst inedible. Whilst the food was cooked reasonably well (gastro pub standard) the seasoning made three of our four dishes inedible. A tip for the chef: if you can taste salt, you’ve over-seasoned. If your mouth dries from the salt, you’ve failed entirely. For the cost of the meal, it is reasonable to expect a chef who can cook - seasoning and all - to a very high standard. This failed to reach that bar at any time. I’ve paid much, much less and eaten far, far better many times before. Avoid.

Nice location. Food was OK (we expected more for a Michelin rated restaurant), service was poor. Other tables appeared to be prioritised despite our early booking and having a young child with us. One example - it took over 1 hour from sitting to getting our starters, even though we made an early booking and we were the second table in the restaurant. We ordered simple seafood. Food on other tables arrived more quickly, and before ours. It was our 10 year wedding anniversary but we felt like second class citizens.

Fantastic restaurant, easy to see why it earned itself a mitchelin star! Good location by the quay with lovely views, all 6 of us went for the taster menu with scallops, tuna, lobster, wagu beef the lot...every single dish was amazing and the presentation was stunning! Well worth a visit.

Good friendly professional service. Cosy dining room in a lovely location. As someone who has worked in hospitality for 40 years it pains me to criticise a restaurant, but food is not worthy of bib gourmand. I had a scallop dish to start which was average and over flavoured. My main course Turbot dish was very poor with zero texture, all onions, pak choi and wet flavours, it completely lacked texture. Very disappointed with the food. My partner had the gallotine which had a lot of flacid chicken skin and tasted too rich with little to counter balance it. The Red Mullet was also overcooked and lacked flavour. Such a pity as the front of house team put on a great show, it's the kitchen team that let's it down.

This was a rather odd dinner experience. We came in on a Friday for dinner to have the tasting menu. We were excited as the menu on the website looked great. We decided to go with the wine pairing. The restaurant itself was nice, if a little tight between the tables, they could do with taking one table away instead of cramming people in, but interior was beautiful and atmosphere was pleasant. Service was efficient and friendly and casual in the right way. Unfortunately what fails to deliver is the composition of the menu and the wine pairing. The food itself was all well cooked with clearly very good ingredients. However, it was too much for a start - this felt like a 1990s over indulgance more is more approach with 3 fish dishes and 3 meat dishes, 2 desserts as well as a selection of 3 pre starters. Each dish was tasty but not particularly innovative and lacked in different textures and flavours. It felt very much like "meat/fish and 3 veg with sauce". Each fish dish and each meat dish was very similar to each other which made the menu impossible to enjoy or even finish. The wines were very uninteresting and basic did nothing to add to the food. They were also presented very oddly by the maitre d; for each one she basically said "this is a red wine which tastes of berry and chocolate" or "this is a white wine which tastes of citrus and apple blossom". While we had the wine menu it would have been much more interesting and appropriate to present the wine with its name, country of origin and grape variety. I don't need to know what the wine tastes of, I can do that myself! So overall it was a very mixed experience for us but it brought home how important the composition of the menu is and the balance bewteen the courses. Shame because they have a lot going for them and I think the potential is there but we felt they need to have a total re think of what they do with their food ad how they present it together with the wine.

Have just had the most amazing meal for hubby's birthday at 39 On the Quay. We chose the set menu, and the carrot soup starter was out of this world, certainly not your normal soup - the texture and taste were nothing short of sublime. The rest of the meal didn't disappoint, everything about the meal was exceptional - we just loved it. A truly high-class restaurant with very reasonable pricing. We shall be back. Booked a month in advance for a taster menu for two for my partners special birthday. Asked for 1x normal and 1x vegetarian. The lady on the phone said she would check with the chef and call me straight back that today to confirm all okay. Then 5 days before received a call saying they don’t usually do vegetarian taster menus but would be able to do some veggie dishes while my partner had the meat taster menu. 2 days before I then received another call saying they don’t do veggie dishes at all. I asked to cancel the reservation, could hear her talking to someone in the background and then she hung up on me. Called back and was hung up on again! I was very polite so no idea why they would be so rude. This left me two days to find somewhere else, which as Xmas party season is starting, left me with limited options. Very disappointing! Will definitely not be returning.

We were looking forward to our visit to this restaurant despite the mixed reviews on Tripadvisor- it seemed like Marmite, you either liked it or hated it. Unfortunately, we hate Marmite! This restaurant is living on past glory, and in our opinion does not warrant 3 AA rosettes let alone a mention in the Michelin Guide. Our table had the tasting menu, which whilst reasonably priced for the number of courses, lacked flavour and was poorly executed. The menu reads well on paper but somehow fails to deliver. There was a lack of consistency in the cooking - eg my cod was well cooked but my friend’s was undercooked. The meat courses just consisted of a small piece of meat (no quibbles on the size since it is a tasting menu) with a smear of sauce which lacked flavour. There were no differing textures or flavour combinations. Meat that was generally described as barbecued, Tandori, etc but just lacked any oomph. It had been cooked sous vide but tasted just that - something that had been cooked in a water bath with no added flavour. There’s a difference between something being delicately flavoured and no flavour! Also, the food was not particularly hot. The service was friendly but not very professional. We noticed that where a table was having the wine flight, the restaurant manager was carrying 4 glasses of wine at a time ( 2 in each hand) and putting them down without much explanation - shouldn’t you bring the bottle to the table, show the guests the bottle and then pour the wine? The restaurant was absolutely packed- it didn’t feel like fine dining, especially with the loud background pop music. The pacing of the meal was poor. They say in advance to allow 3 hours which is fair enough but in the end our taxi was waiting outside whilst we rushed to finish our meal - we ran out of time to have coffee! The pacing seemed to start off ok and the first 3 courses ( including the canapés) came in reasonably quick succession but then the timing changed, with long gaps between courses. There were a few other tables having the tasting menu, some of whom arrived after we did. It’s like the chef tries to play catch-up so that ultimately you all end up having the same course at the same time ie a table that arrives at 7.15pm finishes the same time as a table that arrives at say 8pm. Overall, it was an awful experience which we won’t repeat and our advice would be to “avoid”.

Wonderful seasonal menu, cooked and presented beautifully, lovely setting on the quay and friendly and hospitable front of house team, make this restaurant a must. I thoroughly enjoyed dining here. Not cheap (£100 for 2 including 2 drinks) but worth every penny - lots of surprise culinary treats between courses made this a really special occasion. We have visited 36 several, many many times, over a long period of time. The overall experience has usually been good or very good. This time it was close to poor. The amuse bouche were very salty and too large pieces of cured mackerel. That was served with a cone with very soft and almost tasteless tarama. We asked for additional plates of vegetables for the table ( which we would pay for) and were told a) it could be done and b) there were plenty of vegetables served with the main plates. I don't believe a) and b) certainly was not correct. Plus that is not how to respond to diners. The fish dish was covered with a thick and inedible layer of maybe fused bread crumbs. It made the entire dish unpalatable. There were four of us and each dish was seriously under seasoned. I'm really sorry to write this report. Usually one can find some positives to balance the disappointments. None were to be found. What has happened to the kitchen isn't clear, but presumably on a Friday evening the A team was in the kitchen. More attention to the main dishes and zero amuse bouche and between course mini offerings may help focus on what matters. Hopefully things will improve again. The menu choices in terms of proteins were very strange and there was zero for a vegetable loving diner.

We called at 36 the quay today to book an overnight stay and meal for an upcoming stay, Fortunately for us the place was closed but their 36 quay street food was open so we decided to have lunch. The smell from the hut was an appalling fried food smell. We decided to order despite this, I ordered crab, mango and sweet chilli bagel and my husband had the chicken Caesar wrap. We ordered coffee but we’re advised that the machine was broken so we could have coke or water or tea. We gave that a miss. When the food arrived some 20 minutes later we were rather dismayed. My crab, mango and sweet chilli bagel, was curried crab paste with no mango and lots of chilli sauce on a stale brioch bun. My husbands chicken Caesar wrap was a piece of deep fried chicken with a deep fried potato rösti and some Mayo…we came away smelling of deep fried everything. The notice board advertised Vegan, Vegetarian and gluten free food and then stated ‘ all of our food is deep fried in the same fryer, so we can’t guarantee Vegan, Vegetarian or gluten free…..given the burgers, chicken, Rosti’s and falafel were all cooked in the same fryer, I can rest assure people that your food would not be vegan….if this is the best a top restaurant can do as a take away then I doubt it can do better in the restaurant as others have stated. If you don’t have mango, bagels etc then don’t advertise that you do.

Beautifully situated and regretted we hadn't asked for a window seat when we booked which would have given us nice views of the water. First impressions were how clean and well appointed it was. The service was good also. But it was such a strange menu, no traditional dishes and and it appeared whoever made up the menu was just trying to be different - unfortunately without great success. Had a sort of broth accompanying one meal but it came without a soup spoon so how you ate it was anyone's guess. Its certainly not a cheap restaurant and not really value for money so it is most unlikely we would go back.

I was so looking forward to the taster menu hoping for a quality restaurant experience that was a level above the gastro pubs in the surrounding area. On first sight , white linen, tasteful decor, silver cutlery were hopeful signs. However never judge a restaurant by its presentation and marketing promotion, my mistake. The food was poor. Not a single dish stood out for praise. Execution was haphazard. Just a few examples; the amuse bouche parcel of my guest was served split open the tuna tartare was full of sinew rather than carefully diced, the scallop was totally overpowered by garlic that the the mouth felt it had been burnt by garlic. Langoustine Sweet and Sour would't last 2 weeks on a Chinese cafe takeaway menu. More care could have been taken over the cooking of the meat dishes and the presentation was rather one dimensional.Wine list rather short and lacking in depth. Playing of muzak intermittently was rather annoying not least when it changed from smooth pop to dance to something else. Fortunately the volume was kept down albeit still intrusive. Service was functional and smooth without being engaging. The annoyance comes at the end when the bill as expected with service is £200 for two for food you would not wish to revisit.

The restaurant is beautifully situated and the service itself is good in that they are polite and attentive but they have no idea about the food. It isn’t served with any explanation about its origins and the menu is so stark there’s absolutely no hint as to what’s what. I had a crab starter with a watermelon type soup. I asked the waitress if I was supposed do eat them separately or ladle it over the crab. She had no idea and no intention to find out. My husband made a joke about me eating the finger bowl (ie watermelon soup) but they probably wouldn’t know if it was for fingers or not! The amuse bouche was flavourless. The bread was so full of raisins it was like a pudding (delicious but inappropriate). I also had the Halibut dish which quite frankly was a disgusting concoction ! My husband had the lamb though which was beautiful. I asked if the steaks on the menu came with any sort of potato (one would expect fondant or a couple of fancy triple cooked chips with a steak, surely?) but there wasn’t any. It’s all very odd. For the money, utterly not worth it.

There were several changes to the menu last night which would not have mattered had there been a vegetarian option on the menu. Worse than that, I had to ask the waitress what was in the between course appetizer [these were not mentioned on the menu] as I have an allergy and she didn't know. On coming back to say the main ingredient was what I was allergic to, I was questioned by the floor manager if what I said was true. As a substitute I was given a plate of plain beans. Although my chosen dishes were ok, they were definitely on the sweet side. Then right at the end when I said I didn't want a desert I was offered chesses, not on the main menu so there was an alternate vegetarian dish after all!

I can’t remember the last time l have been this utterly disappointed with a meal out. I actually didn’t know whether to laugh or cry. I have wanted to eat in this restaurant for years and with a special occasion to celebrate l thought l had the perfect reason to visit. We ordered the Taster menu and it was not to my liking at all. One of the courses was a diced raw scallop on cold raspberry purée, no taste at all apart from raspberry smoothie, a raw mackerel fillet with grated watery apple over the top and a tasteless sweet sauce, a diced ‘frankfurter’ sausage with mushroom and cheese over the top and the dessert was just like something you’d expect if you ordered a toffee sundae in a Harvester. These are the courses that stick out the most for me. You know it’s bad when you get excited when the bread basket comes out, but even the bread was fruity and sweet so not ideal. I really thought l was going to be eating some delicious, well cooked food. I hardly ever write reviews but l felt the need to in this case as I’ve let bad meals go in the past but when they come with a price tag like this it’s really hard to swallow. I would have truly rather have eaten in MacDonalds. At least l would have had a bad meal but it would have only have cost me £5. I thought the restaurant was nice inside, the staff attentive and efficient and the wine pairing that went with the taster menu was great.

It was well cooked and inventive and, in contrast to quite a lot of fine dining restaurants, provided a good quantity of vegetables with our meat and fish dishes. The one disappointment was the large portion sizes. A restaurant with the best view of Emsworth Harbour and with a knowledgeable Vintner describing the accompanying wines a sociably distanced number of c28 covers enjoyed contrasting courses. The accompanying bread was delicious but too large.Starting with a slice of delicious garlic-infused raw Pollock along with Baba Ganoush in a wafer cone the evening augered well. Cremant from the Loire to accompany.Prawns in a delicious lovage-infused juice followed, the only disappointment being that the accompanying cutlery simply did not afford the opportunity to enjoy the juice unless you wanted to 'supp from the bowl'.... Accompanied by a SA Sauvignon Blanc 'Iona'.A Rose 'Aix' accompanied Crab in Buttermilk and was delicious. The disappointment was the main dish of Cod in risotto with a white truffle oil - it was just too large a portion even though it contrasted beautifully with a light Spanish Red (which had a Ladybird on the label). Yes I know; red wine with fish, but it works well depending upon the fish and the wine....Dessert was a refreshing Rhubarb with Custard accompanied by a lovely sweet wine which I can't recall as by then I was in la-la-land. Well not quite...!

I have to say first and foremost, that this review is for the Food truck outside, and in all honesty, I think it should be treated as a separate entity to £6 Restaurant, maybe I should add it as a stand aloneI love street food, and have eaten it all over the world, it usually signifies good food, served quickly, for a reasonable cost. If only..I had seen this for a while, and while walking around decided that a snack was in order. Firstly, quite a wait as everything is cooked to order. I asked about what I was going to order (sweet and sour chicken) and placed an order of that for myself, and some Garlic fries for my wife. Ok, we waited, and I was then given the wrong food, for which the man behind the counter apologised. My wife got her (expensive) fries while mine was being remade. Unfortunately the garlic started to turn the mayo green, and while the fries were crisp and tasty, I thought overpriced for what they were. When I got mine, a smallish portion for the price, the rice was undercooked, the chicken overcooked, and there was a splash of sweet chilli sauce, not sweet and sour. Like other reviews I have read about this food truck, a lot went in the bin. This is not a food truck, a food truck has fresh ingredients, cooked as required, this is processed food, reheated, with little care or attention.Sorry, I really wanted it to be so much more..

We dined and stayed at this lovely restaurant with rooms. The tasting menu was full of good things with only a couple of duds. There were 8 courses plus canapes, an amuse bouche and a palate cleanser before desert. We were somewhat defeated by the portion sizes which were bigger than is normal for tasting menus and there could have been a couple fewer. Beef fudge (one of the canapes) is a revolting idea but the others of cured fish were excellent. Flavour combinations were almost all succesful without some ingredients losing their identity. The only really unsuccesful course for me was some plaice which was over-cooked and swamped by a Thai-inspired gloop. Otherwise a squid dish was brilliant, Wagyu beef delicious, a palate cleanser of a black-currant granita was perfect. The wine pairings for the tasting menu were good, biased towards the new world. We'd certainly come back but next time order a la carte.

I visited this restaurant several years ago and enjoyed the experience. This time I had the crab starter with water melon salad. This was 50% or so more expensive than the others so I had high expectations. There was hardly any crab in this and it had no texture. I did not think the melon worked and certainly not with so little crab. Why Cornish crab when they say they use local produce? Lots of crab round here.I had been looking forward to the turbot but this had been substituted by halibut - certainly not a local fish, which they say they use. Why not brill or sole maybe? This was OK but just had a few mangetout thrown on top, not very pleasing to the eyeI don't usually have desert but thoroughly enjoyed the raspberry Alaska.

We pre-booked some weeks ago as we had to plan the holiday. COVID measures were excellent. We got there very early and were greeted by Caroleena who was very welcoming. We had the window table which was great. Well what can we say it was simply superb. We had the Fish/Hass & Lamb to start and the Lamb & Wagyu Beef for mains. In between there were loverly 'amuse bouche's' which was such a superb touch. We were also served by Zoe. Between Caroleena & Zoe they made what was an excellent evening of exceptional food and fantastic experience. The presentation of the food and taste was not a regular occurrence and something to remember for some time. Truly fine dining at its best. Thanks you so much for a memorable evening keep up the good work and we will be back for sure. kindest regards Andy & Joanie xx

They were fully booked but we had a short notice cancellation so we thought we were lucky. All started well with a parking space close to the venue. We had our temperature taken when we entered and there was plenty of distance between the tables so it looked good. We were seated by a friendly waitress. Service wasn't rapid but OK. I was told that there was a change to the menu and the one I really wanted was off the menu, the turbot and it had been replaced with halibut. I found this surprising as they usually serve fresh locally caught fish and halibut is a northern fish, brill, sole or even bream would have been fine. I ordered a half bottle of wine as I was driving and my wife wouldn't need a whole bottle. I was surprised when we were presented with half a bottle of wine in a full size bottle, already open, strange as I've eaten in many good restaurants and a half bottle has always been served in a half size bottle, unopened. I started with tartare of mackerel, I'd not had this before so was experimenting, it was OK, followed by the halibut. It wasn't very hot but I thought this may have been because the service wasn't that swift and it could have been cooling on the side in the kitchen. My wife had the duck breast for starters, some was warm and some was cold. My wife had the lamb for mains but although it was tender, it wasn't that hot either. My halibut arrived covered with mange tout, again this wasn't that hot but I was looking forward to the halibut but was disappointed as this also was only warm and as I tucked in I found that the fish was clear near the bone, raw. We decided not to have a dessert but had a coffee which was perfect, strong and piping hot, a shame the rest of the meal wasn't as good. I have no explanation as to why our food was warm at best, I thought about it and came up with 3 possible answers. I. The chef previously worked in a Sushi restaurant. 2. He/she had been told not to make the food too hot in case someone burned their mouth and sued them. 3. The slow service allowed the food to cool in the kitchen but this wasn't the reason as my fish would have been completely cooked, even if cool. Not a cheap meal, about the same as dinner at the Ritz but lacking the service and perfection. I think we'll stick to Prezzo and the Shalimar in future. Very disappointing to say the least as we'd heard so much good about it when I lived in Emsworth but I've since been told it had changed hands, perhaps they need a bit of experience or a new chef.

We had a lovely dinner here this week. Crispy sweetbreads and crab salad to start plus beautifully cooked cod with pea puree. Service was a bit slow and various amuses bouches too pernickity, maybe trying for a michelin star? Good wine list and its in a beautiful location overlooking the harbour so you will need to book.

We visited here to eat in the restaurant and stay in the upstairs rooms on our anniversary. Firstly, the restaurant is in a stunning location, on the quay overlooking the bay.We had the tasting menu with matching wines. Overall, it was a great experience. The food was very good from start to finish - highlights were the ‘Tomato, Crab and Bergamot’ and the ‘Orkney, Scallop and Elderflower’. We had a wonderful evening and finished it off with a walk around the harbour. The room (we stayed in the Nutmeg Room) was clean and simply decorated - you have a great view of the bay with a window seat. Because of Covid, they served continental breakfast on a tray to the room, which we ate on the sun terrace next to our room that overlooked the quay. Overall a great stay!

Their restaurant was shut so tried their pop up van beside it, thinking it would be be bad as it’s part of what looked like a nice restaurant. Awful, processed junk chicken burgers, couldn’t they just use a real chicken breast. Bottom of the pile food. Wouldn’t want to eat in their main restaurant after this!

Food was ok, but felt over priced, and fairly limited choice. Would have been nice to have a daily special option using something seasonal. Cooking was mostly good, but some odd choices of ingredients. Some dishes were lovely (duck, cod), others quite awful (turbot). Appetisers were nice. Drinks prices reasonable. We went on a very warm day, and the fans were just not up to the job. AC may not be affordable, but we were very uncomfortable and the flies were annoying.Wouldn’t go again.

We came here for a birthday celebration. This had been recommended by a friend and we had tried to get in several previous birthdays but not been able to do so. The general decor and ambiance was quiet and serene, in keeping with the price tag. We have been lucky enough to have several previous taster-menu experiences, with wine flights, in other restaurants and had been delighted by them all. Sadly, this experience fell a long way short. We started with canapés. One (cod with black pudding) was fine. The other was a leek, with a barbecue sauce. The taste was nothing special, but the texture unpalatable; it was very tough and after chewing for several minutes it simply would not break down. While I was still chewing, the waitress came and cleared the plates, without asking how it was, and left me still chewing, and returned with the next canapé. I was still chewing at that point, and (despite feeling extremely embarrassed to have to be so impolite) was forced to spit it out, and put it on the side of the new plate of food! When she returned she neither asked about that course, nor commented on that. The next canapé was neither pleasant nor unpleasant, but very spicy, which is unusual at this point in a meal. There followed some tasty mackerel tartare in a bland (or were our tastebuds just cauterised from the last course?) kind of tomato water, with fresh cherry tomatoes. Not horrible but not interesting either. That was the only course I actually finished. Everything else just wasn’t very nice. Some things neither looked nor tasted great, for example a bowl of finely sliced pastrami with finely sliced apple and a kind of sauce which frankly resembled vomit. Nothing else was inedible but nor was it delicious. The wine paired didn’t clash, but it wasn’t the joyful marriage we had experienced elsewhere. The wine was plentiful, I will say that, certainly was not able to finish all of it. As each course was cleared unfinished, only once was an inquiry was made as to our enjoyment. When we did give the negative feedback, this was just accepted with a nod and that this would be passed on, at no point did the waiting staff appear concerned that we were not enjoying it, or offer any kind of compensation. This is a very expensive place and not only is not worth it, I would have been dissapointed in this meal had it been a budget option. Just don’t go here.

We were promptly served with my glass of prosecco, and tap water as requested, but after 15 minutes hadn’t been given any menus. I went to ask, and then we were brought one main menu, and one dessert menu! Very strange. Eventually we both had the a la carte menu, but no wine list! Again I went to ask. After an hour we were given our canapés. That is quite a long wait, perhaps the kitchen was over stretched. The amuse bouchée was really weird, and did not amuse at all. It was a bowl of hot stock with a table spoon of spelt in the bottom. What were you thinking of, Gary? It would have been a treat in a POW camp, but not in a restaurant like this. The first courses were far too large, my husband’s cod would have been a meal in itself, and had I eaten my bao bun I would have been too full for anything else. Inexplicably crab and bun were served on a small stone. The Welsh wagyu beef and the Argentinian Malbec were excellent, however sadly this did not rescue the evening.

Both similar prices etc...I personally found 36 on the Quay a little bit better which surprised me...especially as it wasn’t as busy as I thought it would be....36 had a bit “more” attention to detail and offered more, with little tit bits between courses....and several different breads...the fig bread was amazing! .... the food overall was exceptional and the service was very fitting with fine dining....I would definitely recommend this place

Having stayed a number of times when owned by Ramon, we were very disappointed with our latest visit. The location staff and rooms were as before great. The big let down was the food. Ramon was a Michelin stared chief and the food made this a five star experience. The prices are the same but the food is a million miles from Michelin quality. The amuse bouche was terrible, fermented carrot (inedible) lump of sausage in tasteless sauce and tasteless bit of fish in a green sauce. If you can’t be bothered to do a amuse bouche that reflect your style as a chief (maybe it does!) don’t do one. The first course was crab which we both enjoyed. My wife had turbot which she said was good. I had Wagu beef which was awful. The desert was at best ok apart from the ice cream which was tasteless. The food was soo different from our last stays that I checked on TA and found out there had been a change of ownership. I also noticed there had been a number of bad reviews about the food . I really wish the young couple who are now running 36 on the Quay well but unless a dramatic improvement is made I fear for their future. Very difficult to make a reputation , very easy to loose one.We have previously recommended the restaurant and Hotel to many friends, unfortunately we will not be able to do this in the future.

Hadn't been to 36 since the Farthing days when the food was seemingly served in reverential silence and it was all a bit over-bearing.We went twice in a month or so, firstly for lunch and then dinner. The lunch was by far the better experience. Three options on the set menu for each of starter, main and dessert, great value and we would definitely do that again. A bonus that the tide was in and we had a lovely view.Dinner was a different matter - we went on a Friday night in early December expecting that it would be festive but it was, shall we say, under-stated. The lunch options were less fussy but for dinner it seemed like the chef was trying too hard. Too many flavours competing with each other, resulting in over-complex dishes. (The Earl of March at Lavant produce plates that look beautiful, but without over-complicating them.) The fact that the restaurant was only half full at a time of year when people are out more said it all. Our experience was also spoilt by another diner who almost shouted conversation across to another table. It made me yearn rather for the reverential quiet of bygone years at the Inn on the Quay (as was).Overall a bit of a shame as I wish the owner all the best and hope that he is able to make a big success of 36 as that is good Emworth itself. My recommendation would be the set lunch - good value and less fussy dining.

A pre Christmas dinner for my family - should have stayed in Southsea - staff friendly enough but food uninspiring and grossly over priced. Vegetarian menu choice non-existent - one choice for starter and main course which, in this day and age is unforgivable and to make matters worse both dishes were extremely bland and tasteless. Puddings and wine good although range of soft drinks haphazard as some ‘standards’ such as ginger beer were unavailable. I think this restaurant may be living off its reputation many years ago - I will not return or recommend. Very disappointing

We have been to 36 many times over the years and have had some wonderful meals and some slightly disappointing ones but last night was dreadful! The menu is now so pretentious that quite frankly no one knew what to order and truthfully there was nothing on it that looked remotely tempting. We eat out a lot all over the world and there were ingredients on there that I had never heard of and having eaten some of them never wish to hear of again!! The menu bears absolutely no resemblance to the one on the website. If they had published the current one I doubt that we would have booked. The scallop dish turned out to be some peculiar soup that certainly wasn't anything like the description and the Wagyu beef was tough and inedible. Really disappointing and at the prices they charge quite scandalous. I suppose it was telling that, with the office Christmas party season in full swing, the restaurant was half empty. In years gone by at this time of year you couldn't get a table for love nor money. I'm sorry to be so negative but we really had a pretty disastrous evening.

We booked the private room for a family group of nine to celebrate a 50th birthday. We (aged from teenagers to 80s) all had a most memorable evening, We pre-ordered from the a la carte menu for practicality, choosing almost every item in doing so, and every one was delicious. The service was spot on, attentive and friendly without being intrusive. The private room, no extra charge, was just right for the numbers and to provide privacy for a family event. It's a little expensive compared to options nearby but it is a touch above the quality of most. We were willing to pay for the special occasion that it proved to be, but it means we wouldn't want to come every week.We last came here around ten years ago and it's as good as we remembered it then. We happily recommend it to others as an upmarket dining experience and will come again (sooner than ten years next time).

I recently visited this restaurant with my wife, daughter and her husband and what a disaster. It didn’t start well with the canapés served in the garden inedible. Wage beef tough, picked rhubarb odd and the tuna bits, well the least said about these the better. Fast forward to starters, chicken terrine just lumps of chicken which was not cooked through. At this stage customers on adjacent tables, who at this point had their main courses served, started to complain with two meals sent back. At this stage we cut our loses and decided to leave. A disaster of an evening, although the curry from a nearby restaurant was nice and edible.

I have eaten here previously and had a wonderful time but not for a few years. Our waitress was describing the dishes completely differently to the young waiter behind us, who was more enthusiastic. We started the eight course taster menu with wine flight after notifying the waitress that my wife has a seafood allergy. The canapés arrive and 4 of 6 were indeed fish? The tomato water with lovage arrived next and my wife’s had an eye lash in it. The first wine arrived but wasn’t poured in front of us so we didn’t truly know if it’s what we were told and the description of it was at best minimal. We complained about the hair and the appetiser was replaced. Next up the starter and another glass of wine again not entirely sure if it’s what we expected. I had a fish starter and my wife had pork, half way through she discovered a long hair in the sauce. Enough was enough we settled the account and walked out. Poor hygiene standards and poor service. The wine flight is not worth £80 pp when you don’t even get to see the bottle or have a true description and taster notes. Unfortunately 36 on the Quay is not what is was very very disappointed and will never go back.

Once coming home after this experience I do feel quite annoyed that I paid over £100 a person for the tasting menu. It will be memorable but for all the wrong reasons. The service and wine matching were good, but food was very poor. The combinations just did not work for a pleasurable experience, I think I have cooked more satisfying food in my own home.I felt totally embarrassed as this was brought for a birthday present, but they never got to experience fine dinning. My partner took me in this restaurant as a treat for my birthday. We had the 8 Moments taster menu, what a total disappointment! With the exception of a couple of the dishes being OK, the rest were on the verge of being inedible. Very weird combinations of elements, very weird tastes and generally flavours that normally wouldn't go together. Each dish came with its own small glass of wine and that was the only positive thing in this experience as the wine was in general of good quality. In my view when you pay £200 for a meal for just two people then you should have a £200 experience. Unfortunately this was not the case here by far. If it was me paying I would have paid only for the wine and would have refused to pay for the food, or even ask to leave early after the second or third dish, but that suppose to be a treat and decided to stay for the whole of the experience. We went to this restaurant on recommendation but we've learned later that it has recently changed hands. We are not going back and won't ever recommend it to anyone.

This place has the potential to be amazing but the food served is some of the worst I’ve eaten. I ordered the asparagus soup which was a bowl of hot cream, some asparagus spears and an egg in the middle - i didn’t eat it and told the waitress it wasn’t edible to which she just said ‘ok’ and took it away?! Any normal restaurant would apologise and offer an alternative but perhaps she has to deal with a lot of complaints?

We were lucky that we chose a time when the sun shone and the weather warm! The views from both our room and the restaurant were a delight. The room (Cinnamon) itself was well equipped and the bathroom compact but fine (very tall people should avoid this room as the bathroom is a "duck and cover"). Now for the food - we chose the 5 Course "taster" menu with wine matches (I sometimes doubt peoples understanding of the English language - the emphasis is on "taster" some reviewers do not seem to understand the concept - the idea is to try dishes that you would not ordinarily go for - some you like and some maybe not) In this instance there was nothing on the menu that would invoke the "substitution" that was offered. The menu just gives an outline as to the constituents with not much of a hint as how it would be presented. All the dishes were for us, excellent the best (on which we (unusually agreed) was the plaice, cauliflower and hazelnut). The wine matches were well chosen and as it was a summer evening good to not be dominated by reds - service was excellent and informative - and we ate at our own pace (which even in some high-end restaurants is not always the case) Glad we chose the 5 rather than the 8 - the evening was very warm and even I (a trencherman) would find sleeping difficult given any more food! We'll keep the 8 for another (cooler) night, We ended up with a pleasant walk around the harbour and thence to bed. Next mornings breakfast kept to the high standards with an excellent "continental" with cereal, fresh fruit, and delicious pastries/toast - more than enough (for those who crave the "full english" there is an excellent cafe next door) after the nights intake!

The food wasn't cheap but the Sunday roast was abysmal. Rock hard potatoes, the staff couldn't care less and decided as I wanted to swap red cabbage for cauliflower cheese, this would cost me a side dish. We had a lovely weekend stay at the Brookfield hotel. We had a function on the Saturday night which was a 7 course meal and I have to say I was blown away with the service and the reassurance of my gluten free options, I could literally have exactly the same dishes as everyone else with just a couple of tweaks I couldn’t believe it! A lovely gentleman served me who I think was a manager (I am so sorry I cannot remember his name) which made me feel so looked after as it can be daunting eating out somewhere new! All staff were helpful and made the evening run smoothly it was very professional! The room was basic but clean and had everything we needed, the only thing I would say is more plug sockets but that’s not the end of the world! Also it was a bit expensive for room service as a sausage and bacon sandwich ended up being £13.45 including tray service but again with inflation maybe that’s why it was that much! Apart from that there was plenty of parking at a small charge and the hotel was easy to get around. Thank you for looking after us, it was the best meal I’ve had as a coeliac plus the most I’ve ever been able to eat!
