Tucked away in a retirement complex is this super little place offering a variety of delicious food, all home made, at ridiculously reasonable prices, prepared and served by a lovely couple. Find it and give it a try.

Ignore the fact that the surroundings are a little unorthodox (the restaurant is part of a supported housing complex for the elderly, so is probably not where you'd go on a first date, or to impress your boss), and instead focus on the fact that this little place serves outstanding home-made food daily, at astonishingly reasonable prices. It's open to the public daily between 9am and 2pm, apart from Saturdays, and also serves a mean Sunday lunch from 12pm - 2pm. So often these days, going out to eat is a dispiriting experience, with below-par, eye-wateringly expensive food served by indifferent staff. Yesterday evening was pie night - the restaurant, though not open in the evening, has regular themed nights, and pie nights every other Thursday. For £6.50 we were served an enormous pie each in a ceramic dish, topped with heavenly, buttery home-made shortcrust pastry and crammed with rich, tasty fillings - steak and kidney, lamb and mint, chicken and ham and creamy vegetable, served with hot, crisp chips or mash, and peas. This is delicious no-frills, honest food to make you happy - tasty dishes, well-executed and made with care. Also available is a huge array of home-made hot puddings and cold desserts - luscious looking cheesecakes, possets and trifles and proper puds - for £2.50 each! We had a light-as-air treacle sponge and custard, jam roly-poly, and an enormous slab of rich chocolate cake. The restaurant also serves freshly made sandwiches, home made cakes and sausage rolls daily. It's Hungerford's best kept secret!
