Top notch food, perfectly prepared and served. Beautifully refurbished, with lovely, comfy, imperial yellow leather seats!

I've been here many times in the past and had good experiences but after reading recent reviews on here I was reluctant to go again ! But the experience was great and I need not have worried, I guess a few people putting bad reviews doesn't show up the 100's that had a good experience and just didn't say anything !. So, the place has recently been overhauled, gone are the bench-tables and new are small 4-6 seaters and cubicles, the place is REALLY brightly lit-up, like a dentists waiting room and huge picture-menus cover both walls. The service was great and I couldn't fault it, despite comments on here to the contrary, the food was also very good, many Chinese people were eating here, another good sign. It's not five-star-dining, so don't go with that expectation and you will come back happy and satisfied !

Red Star has really gone down hill on the last couple of years. Terrible service and the food was awful. Jin Jin a couple of doors down is way better.

When a main arrives before one of the starters, on starts to worry. But the main dissapointment was the cold food, to be honest I think it was probably hot in the pan but we all suffered from cold plates which chilled the food straight down. Edible but not enjoyable.

Food is good but will not be visiting again. I am quite wary of places who accept CASH ONLY, I wasn't made aware of this till the bill came, it sets my alarm bells ringing, especially in this digital age where cashless is the way forward for a lot of us. It raises quite a few questions for me.

I don't normally leave reviews, but felt the need to do so after my order tonight, mostly to protect others from potential harm. We ordered a takeaway via phone earlier today and as I am allergic to onion we asked if all the dishes could be done onion free. Yes,no problem we were told. However, just to be sure my daughter checked again when she picked it up. Again she was told yes, yes, all is onion free. Well, as soon as I opened the first lid I could see and smell the onions. I checked the other dishes and sure enough they all contained onions! Luckily I had noticed in time, but this sort of thing can have dire consequences. So if you have any allergies, be extremely careful and don't just take their word for it. On top of this they overcharged us (apparently the prices on their own website are wrong), forgot one of the dishes and only gave us one portion of spring rolls, despite ordering 2. So all in all a very disappointing experience. I used to love this place, but think it's changed for the worse over the last couple of years. So sadly, I won't be going there again.

we went there for dinner: me and my kids ( 9 yo, 13 yo), ordered some food, which was good but the service was really terrible. we were sit and after we ordered we have been asked to move to another table in the basement sharing the table with another couple. we waited for 5 minutes for our own table upstairs. Meanwhile we saw peaple sent to the ATM to get some cash to pay the bill, so I asked if we can pay by card and they said . YES We had great food but guess what: we have been asked to pay by cash, getting money from ATM. I told them i could not get the money from ATM so a man asked for a 10% more. So I reminded them that they told me I could pay by card and that we had been standing for 5 minutes after beeing asked to change table. I refused to pay the extra 10 % but when I tried to pay they pretended that my card didn't work. I said i didn't have any other way to pay and, at the end, the card worked.

Great food, huge portions. The problems came when paying. They didn't accept card and, being tourists, we didn't have enough cash to cover the bill. Fortunately there was an atm nearby, but the problems weren't over. We needed each our own receipt in order to ask for reimbursement to our university. They were very unwelcoming of this request, and it took a good 10 minutes before miraculously convincing them. Unfortunately, this ruined the whole mood.

I went here to lrdor a soup to eat in and also ordered a takeaway. The staff were very unwelcoming and rude they look miserable and fed up. Basically standing over me waiting to finish eating the soup . Would not recommend eating in . This Place

When we arrived they greeted me and my husband with dirty looks. Asked if they had a table free which they took us down stairs. When there was tables free upstairs. We decided to leave and went to gin gin which we had brilliant service.

We have been visiting this fantastic restaurant for over 14 years. It used to be brilliant: delicious food, great service, gluten free menu, kids menu. It is now under new management and all the above has gone. We sat down, received a frosty reception, requested the GF menu and kids menus and were told they are no longer available. As a coeliac the GF menu made ordering so easy. My boys used to love the kids bento boxes, both are now gone. The lighting was also so bright that we felt like we were being interrogated! The new menu has no GF options or advice. We left without ordering. We won't be returning. Such a shame as this place used to be so friendly and welcoming.

Waited to be seated but gave the seat to the group behind us without saying anything. We got seated and gave us the food menu. Me and my friends waited for 20 minutes and tried so hard to get there attention Very disappointed! They were busy on take away order and ignore us! They shouldn't just keep on taking take away order and ignoring eat in customer! They didn’t even manage to get our order after 25 minutes from being sat down! but didn't tell us that we have to wait longer than usual! What kind of staff is that? At the same time we have a couple who sat beside our table that arrived before us! got served and food came After 10mins from they arrived and seated! What a joke!!! Staff were rude! Service? Cant even rate is as there isn’t any service at all! I've been to lots of Chinese restaurant and this is the worst experience ever! Made an order for delivery. Rider arrived telling me that the restaurant had contacted them to say they had given him the wrong order. Poor guy was really apologetic and helpful. Contacted the tester ant to re-order. They finally delivered but only delivered one items from a large list of things I’d ordered. Called the restaurant who were incredibly unhelpful and rude and at one point hung up on me when they couldn’t understand what had gone wrong. Ended up with no food. Good east asian food at a good price. My partner is of chinese heritage so appreciates places such as this which offer a wider menu with some more traditional options on it. We've also had takeaways from here which have always been excellent too.

We come here regularly, the food is quick and good quality. It’s exceptionally good value with amazing choice of ramen, noodles, rice and bento. Covid measures aren’t the most stringent but the restaurant is clean.

I ordered from this restaurant off deliveroo, they gave me prawn crackers, and the soup was given separately so that the noodles wouldn't absorb it all before arriving. Food tastes amazing -- really enjoyed it.

Si te gusta Wagamamas, te encantará este lugar. Se siente como una impresionante cuchara grasienta de la vieja escuela, pero están sirviendo amor y pasión en forma de fideos y sopas, y aparentemente cientos de otros platos de toda Asia. Red Star has very recently increased their prices (by about a pound a dish), but the value is still exceptional.

Fabulously simple set up. Awesome Japanese & Chinese dishes. The Ramen bowls are huge and so tasty! Katsu curry is another winner, as are the Bento boxes! No frills establishment, fast & polite service.

Red Star Noodle bar is my favourite restaurant ever, Food came out fast, Wonderful staff. The Beef Bento box was so tasty that it was melting in my mouth. Also, very wonderful people who work there and I would definitely recommend Red star noodle bar to everyone. 1000000/10.

Tasty authentic ‘asian’ food served here - mixed cuisine from noodles to curries, but all is delicious. I would recommend the Katsu curry (only £6.50!) - a bargain in Oxford. Don’t expect much from the service, they’re trying to maximize profits but getting you in and out as fast as possible. Also I would not recommend tipping as it does not go to the staff, but to the manager (I knew an ex-employee). Cash only also. But well worth a visit if you’re in Oxford looking for some quick, cheap and easy grub.

But my disappointment was the service, at the begining we had to order as quick as the waitress wanted, also we didn’t have the change to ask some questions about the food. Dropped in one night last week for quick after work meal. Had planned on visiting nearby Jin Jin as had read good reviews but on arrival the restaurant was empty so we took a quick look at Red Star. It was a busy little restaurant with simple bench seats and tables but an extensive menu. As it looked popular and had an interesting menu we decided to give it a go. We were served really quickly and food was delivered really fast. Ordered the katsu chicken and rice, the beef brisket rice (absolutely delicious and tender), with sides of chilli and salt ribs, edamame beans and prawn and vegetable tempura (delicious and fresh). Only thing wasn't so keen on was the rice which could have been more freshly cooked but other wise everything was really good, hot and tasty. Just remember to take cash as they don't take card. There is a cash-point just a few doors down at Tesco though so easy to go get a bit if you need to. Hopefully we'll return.

It is no wonder that Cowley Road's RED STAR has become such a legend amongst Oxford's "townees" and "gownees" alike.

La comida aquí es siempre bueno. De los niños del Sol es delicioso plato (así me dicen), todos los ramen son geniales - no hemos tenido un mal. El aceite chili niño pequeño son deliciosas, pero creo que ellos comprar aceite para el chili, más que para el niño pequeño. El servicio es rápido y amable. La oferta de la hora del almuerzo es genial para un grupo de amigos del trabajo, aunque no lleve camisas blancas si vas de ramen chili! Es sólo un bar de fideos muy bueno - lo mejor en Oxford - hasta ahora.

I have been recommending this place to my friends ever since I went. Do not be fooled by the outside appearance! Admittedly the blue and red sign does not scream great establishment but I can assure you, it is! The layout inside is similar to Wagamamas- long benches and seats either side, so it is not the most romantic or atmospheric place to eat. But the food is incredible. They have a whole separate gluten free menu and there is so much choice! It's very rare that as a Coeliac I feel overwhelmed by choice- but Red Star just about did it. I had a combo box of sweet and sour chicken and beef in black bean sauce- it was so delicious. The price is really reasonable as well, glass of wine is about £4! If you fancy chinese and you are in Oxford this is the place to go.

We finally got round to trying this out, wondering why we left it so long! Really good value, delicious authentic food with good service and a nice atmosphere. Much better value than Wagamama, would definitely recommend!

We came here today after searching along the Cowley road for somewhere to have lunch. I chose the chicken Katsu curry and my partner the chicken chow mein. Both were good and included a drink for £6 each. Would probably try somewhere else next time before returning again. No cards accepted.

This is a great place to have a fast and filling meal on the go. While walking around town, passing through Cowley Road, we happened to get lunch here. They have a big menu with loads of choice. Our lunch order comprised of Chicken Katsu Curry with rice and Chicken in Black bean sauce with a couple of bottles of beer. The price is quite affordable and service is quick and efficient.

Popped in there for lunch before to head into the ice cream place next door. Ordered a vegetarian ramen. Prices are very affordable and portion size very good. Service was quick. Be aware, they so not accept cards. Having said that there is a cash point just next to it.

If you want a hearty Chinese meal n want it double fast and at a reasonable price.... go to the red star on Cowley rd. The honey black pepper chicken is my fav. And the combo dishes are great if you're super hungry. You basically get 2 meals for a tenner if you buy the combo. Enjoy

Good location for lunch or casual dinner with friends or family. I had an amazing noodle soup and jasmine tea for less than £7. My friend had some sort of beef dish with rice that was OK.

This is a cheaper version of Wagamamas! The food is gorgeous and is quick to arrive at the table, and the staff friendly. Take always are ready quickly to pick up and the restaurant is perfect for a quick meal or even on your own. I am a regular here as I live up the road, I keep going back!

We have gone as family to Red Star for many years, has long been our favourite asian restaurant at this price point.Went there 2 days ago as a family group of 10, we had a very poor meal. The chicken satay starter was inedible and so hard / crispy that the only logical assumption is it had been prepared earlier and re-cooked / served. One of the noodle dishes was stone cold. The chilli beef was poor. Ramen soup was good. Overall, we genuinely though the chef might be on xmas holiday, so far off usual standard was the mealAll restaurants have bad days, but what has made this almost certainly our last visit was how badly the staff there dealt with our polite complaint about the food, the satay in particular, which was particularly bad.We returned most of the satay uneaten (at a table with 7 boys from aged 8 to 14, which tells you how bad it was!) and explained to the staff why. When the bill came, the restaurant only refunded 1 of the 3 portions. They said the chicken was hard / crispy because it takes a long time to cook!!We probably won't go back now

The portion is big and cheap. Definitely a good place to hang out with friends for students. The taste for the soup could be better but however it is better than many shops in Oxford.

I have been here on several occasions. The food is top notch and is a great value. It's worth a visit if you're in Crowley road, even with all the competition. Try the Kimchi Soup, YUM!

First visit to this restaurant would certainly return! Food selection was great, staff welcoming. We chose the menu that allowed a noodle and rice dish to be selected from a choice and served in two bowls. Thoroughly enjoyed our meals, served promptly, food delish and great value.

We were going to the O2 and looking for somewhere to have a quick bite to eat before hand, this place fitted the bill with a good selection of Japanese, Thai and Chinese food. We opted for a couple of the special meals, Chicken dishes with Rice and Noodles. The food was really tasty and the service was also very good, it was really busy but everything was done well, would definitely return as also very good value for money, £20 with a couple of beers, whats not to like.

A mix of Japanese, Chinese and Korean food. The MaPo Tofu is a family favourite and the best I've tried anywhere. The ramen and yasai curry are very good too.

Quick, clean, friendly, well prepared food. Not always easy to provide all these, but the Red Star chinese owners manage it well. This is a no nonsense, eatery, just right for a quick and tasty lunch.

For a fast tasty lunch this is perfect. in and out quickly. Food brought fast, all tasty and cheap. You sit on a bench and chat to other customers. everyting I've eaten here has been good.

Visited Red Star for dinner on a Sunday evening. I have had a takeaway from here before and the food was delicious so I would probably still order from here, however when dining in I ordered the vegetarian katsu curry, which I'd give a miss in future. It was really greasy and not very good quality compared to others I've had. The service was not great either. I have given three stars because it was after Cowley road carnival so they'd probably had a busy day and maybe it wasn't up to their usual standard.

My non coeliac friends confirm that the "normal" food here is delicious, standard yummy Chinese at very affordable prices (£5-£7, huge portions). The worst meal we've eaten out in quite a long time... This place always looks really busy, it has an extensive menu and prices are very low, especially for Oxford, though I wouldn't consider it to be good value as the food was so bad. Seafood udon was completely insipid, chicken teriyaki bento consisted reconstituted meat in a bland, beige, unidentifiable sauce, plus a side of frost bitten spring rolls and wilted salad garnish. It wasn't even tasty for a guilty quick fix of junk food. Unless price is your sole criteria when choosing where to eat out, I'd recommend avoiding this place.

My wife took me out for lunch today to one of her favourite destinations for a lunchtime bite, the Red Star Noodle Bar on the Cowley Road. The service was quick and friendly, the food was amazeballs, fresh and cooked to perfection. We shared the duck in seaweed spring rolls and also had pad Thai and something with a Japanese name...it was all beautiful. This place is definitely worth eating at if looking for good Asian food on the Cowley Road.

Quick, cheap and cheerful noodle bar with communal tables and big bowls of tasty soup. They had a huge menu, which I can't find online but I appreciated that the staff followed my requests to have rice noodles instead of ramen, and no added onion/garlic. The rice noodles were a bit overcooked and fell apart a little, but the broth tasted nice and they brought the food SO fast. There wasn't a whole lot going on with the ramen, not as much fun stuff added in as I would've liked, but it was a quick, filling meal that hit the spot on a Friday night. Cash only, communal tables, and big, hearty portions for your money.

Like the old wagamamas we used to have. With all the favourites. Fast service. Great for a dinner on a budget. Make sure you have the hard cash before you go. Did used to be better. But still worth a visit. Great location next to the O2 Academy.

Hi dropped in here on a Sunday lunchtime for a quick bite to eat and that is exactly what it was. Good selection on the menu. I had Singapore Mee Fan Noodles, which it said was "spicy", but it was a bit bland and didn't have the usual Singapore noodles kick. We also got charged for 4 meals when there were only 3 of us, but it got cleared up

Been here once since someone recommended it, claiming it's their favourite place to eat out.First of all, this place does have amazing deals so you can eat relatively cheap and try out a good variety of dishes for lower price compared to other place.The food was alright. However it didn't really have the authentic taste i was expecting. Perhaps it has only authentic taste for the japanese dishes, i can't claim the same for their korean and chinese dishes.The food isn't bad, but it's not the best version you can get. It's alright i guessI will consider giving this place another chance simply because i want to try out some of their dishes which i can't find in other places. Perhaps i caught them on a bad day.
