Majliss in Oxford

I came here with a colleague on a recent business trip- it was the taxi driver’s suggestion- we were a bit wary at first. The place is big and spacious, of course we were sat by the window.. the service was very good and friendly (they helped us get a taxi home, and checked on us). I chose one of the chicken specials, a stuffed chicken breast - never heard of that one- and it was surprisingly good! Definitely one for the list.

Our experience - and everyone else’s in the restaurant - was spoiled by a very large table of very loud men. Food was average.

I went here with my friends who are massive fans and love the food. I'm Bengali and the people who run this place are also. The food is for the non-south Asian folk. The meat doesn't taste like the sauce its cooked in nor does it contribute to the flavour of the dish. The breads and lassi and the starters are ok but mains meh. It is designed for the white crowd and when we were there myself and one of my friends were the only brown ppl there. Nothing against that at all. But it shows in the dishes it's very much a takeaway dish kind job. But I have definitely had better. Sorry Majliss but you need more clout than a 2017 comment maide by a Michelin star chef. You need to reduce the menu and focus on making it authentic.

We ordered a takeaway from here last night and didn’t regret it. It arrived early, piping hot and oh my word, it was so tasty. I think this is going to be one of our favourite places in Oxford!

The food is amazing the service is good nice staff.

Used to eat in Majliss since around 10 years. Last year something went very wrong. Food quality way lower than in the past. Constant problem with delays. Waiting for delivery more than 1 hour is a routine. Staff nervous. You can hear them arguing and yelling on each other. Within lst 3 months gave them 4 chances. After 5th time i had to wait more than 1 hour for delivery. Decided to post this rewiev. And we live within 2 streets from Majliss...

I have been several times here, takeaway and sit in, with my boyfriend and the food is great, lovely big portions (but not unachievable) and lovely staff. Highly recommend!

You all know by now that I love curry and at Majliss they sell it so you've got taste covered, but they also cover so much more! For sight you have the stunningly modern white walls, as well as some beautiful art and a delightful lime and tomato plate decoration. Smell-wise there's the smell of curry obviously, but also the pungent musky scent of old lilies - intriguing and confident! For sound there's the comforting clatter of the curry trolley rolling up with your dinner, all too rare a sound these days. In terms of touch, I was mainly touching cutlery, but since I was using that cutlery to wolf down delicious curry I'd say I couldn't touch anything better. It's got to be a five out of five!! Food taste was really good, asked for more spicy food and ended up getting chilly powder on top of all the curries. Other than that the food was great, staff’s were helpful.

Great food, great staff, great conversations with them too

The food was nice, so if that's all you care about, you'll be fine. The restaurant has a sign outside advertising what looks like a good deal for a starter, standard main, side and naan/rice, but good luck trying to get them to honour it once you're in. There is no reiteration of the deal on the actual menu so you just have to try and get bring it up with the waiter when you're ordering. When you do then request it, they will tell you various options are not available or tell you that it the sides are split across two, or seemingly anything else to make you give up on ordering it. Then to top it off, if you do persist, when the bill comes, they've just put each item on individually and if it's part of a larger order you can't make heads or tails of what's going on. The bill is done by hand and is covered in crossing out and confused calculations. Our final order seemed to come out about £10 more than the same order is just off the website, and that is before you account for the supposed deals. The whole thing just reeks of a bunch of wheeler dealers trying to take you for a ride. The rest of the service reflects this. The service was slow. The staff weren't necessarily rude, but certainly weren't personable either, and the whole service experience was uncomfortable at best.

Great take out Indian food. Nicely cooked and tasted lovely. Accommodated specific requests and delivered well within the time quoted.

Very, very good. While you can order from their website for delivery - why miss out on an easy night out with friends? The Chicken Tikka was brilliant. One rice between two is plenty, especially if you also share a naan and get poppadoms! Kingfisher + Tiger on tap. Excellent overall.

we visited for a Saturday night meal, we hadn't been for a while and thought we'd give it a go, so glad we did, the starters of chicken tikka and sheekh kebab were brought out on sizzling platters, smelled delicious and tasted even better. Mains of Garlic Chicken and Chicken Dopiaza were superb too, we won't wait so long for a return visit. Do give this place a try, glad to see it quite busy too.

Very nice and clean restaurant with just the right amount of lighting in my opinion, not too bright. The food was decent and the service was great. The nan bread was one of the best I've tasted.

Good quality ingredients and well cooked food. Have made several visits over the past few months and never been disappointed. Very attentive service. Would recommend the prawn puri and the dansak dishes, in particular the Chana Dansak which is the vegetarian one. Freshly cooked naan bread is excellent.

The employees have very bad service and are not welcoming to their customers. When I call them, they do not show up and I leave the restaurant and cancel my order from them. I do not strongly recommend it.

Service was really good, the servers were incredibly welcoming and very attentive to any needs I may have, i.e. topping up water without being prompted. However the food was a slight letdown, the flavours in the sauce for the curry I had was really nice however the chicken was a bit dry, also the poppadom I received was a bit stale which wasn't ideal.

Great evening meal and atmosphere

As the title says. All nine of us left happy. For several years now, Majliss has been our place to go whenever we visit Oxford and that will stay so. Service was friendly and attentionate yet efficient. We all loved the food. Some of us tasted the Rioja, a very good wine at a reasonable price.

Lovely food and great service. Rice was fluffy, lamb was tender, spice was perfect. Only thing (and yes I'm a bit old school) the decor was a bit modern for me. If you want a great tasting Indian meal this is a great choice

We came for dinner on 01/04/2023. We were kindly seated by a member of staff. Shortly after, we placed our order altogether - starters, mains and drinks. Starters arrived quick and was good. We tried the prawn puri for the first time. We then waited over 45mins for our mains. Within this time tables around us had ordered and almost finished eating. Upon asking why the food was taking long we were told "you've already had starters" and "we make the food fresh". But it is rather unusual to wait this long. Staff should've apologised instead of attempting to argue. Mains arrived, I was looking forward to the Garlic chicken but I didn't taste much of garlic in there. The food wasn't brilliant neither was it bad. It was edible, sufficient and "okay". Seating was good and comfortable, they have some sofa type of seating. Seating area is spacious and tables aren't cramed together. Restaurant also serves tap water which is good - some don't. After eating, table was cleaned up swiftly. I was fasting on this day, Mr Kalam instantly brought me dates and water to open my fast, he exercises great social etiquette and customer service. A pleasure to be served by you. A couple of other older men lack good customer service unfortunately. Perhaps it was a bad day at the restaurant. But know that for many customers including myself, food doesn't really matter to me. Rather it's the way you conduct yourself and your customer service and treatment to guests visiting your restaurant. I hope my next visit will be a much better one. Thank you

Maybe a one-off as this was a private booking for an event on a Sunday afternoon, but sadly, the atmosphere, the food, the service was rather bland and just about average. The place should not do anything that downgrades their own reputation.

I’ve ordered a few times food is good but understanding of service is absolutely terrible- I’m not saying don’t order food but as it’s not bad but this restaurant personnel do not know how to have any control of consumer reflections they need training in customer interactions- it does make a difference if they care manners and understanding makes a huge difference!!!!

Wow, what a place! Even in London I haven’t seen such divine service and delicious food! There’s restaurant has its own parking (in case you’re driving). Upon entering there’s a sitting area in case you need to wait to be seated (very thoughtful). Restaurant is very clean, so are the toilets. Prices are very reasonable, low-mid price. Service was quick, dishes were sooo tasty and definitely remind me of home cooked meals. The hot dishes are more mild for my taste. Starters are small portions, so I’d say if you’re 2-3 people, grab 2-3 starters. Main dishes are very filling, rice needs to be ordered in addition as it’s not included. At the end, after cleaning the table they gave us hot (warm) sanitary towels to clean our hands, gave us each a chocolate and a complimentary beverage on the house (we got coffee). Highly recommend

Unexpected delicious! Big portion and in reasonable price. They served vegetarian dishes and a special menu that you can only choose when sit in. I don't eat garlic onion, they tried to accommodate my request and helpful, highly recommend.

Slipped in here after going to the O2 academy. About 10 30pm yet still some people in here. Ordered our food with standard lots of poppadoms. All arrived onto hot plates, lovely. Unfortunately my chicken tikka masala madras hot was not madras hot, or not hot at all. They took it away and must have just put a tub of chilli powder in it so when it returned seconds later it was almost inedible. Nevertheless rest of the food was very nice. Enjoy

We had a late-night visit on Saturday and it was lovely. The food & service were both excellent. Definitely recommend.

First off, let me first state that I am an unrepentant lover of Indian cuisine - and so I came with high expectations, walking into this restaurant. All my expectations were met! A small but homely interior, Majliss transports you to India with her dishes whilst retaining the atmosphere of modern fine dining. The waiters were at their very best and the meals were nothing short of a palatal delight. The Naan bread (has a particular name that starts with P) was insanely good and stole the entire night for me- hitting on the palatal notes with coconut and butter flavours. I could eat that naan all day and not be tired. The lamb biryani was as I expected - perfectly cooked aromatic rice with very tender lamb that they almost melt instantly as soon as they hit the palates (I wish there were more) The sauces were on point and everything was in sync. The meal portions were generous and matched your money’s worth. If I had one major critique (which prevented me from giving them a 5 star rating) was the lamb chops - it wasn’t exactly my favourite. Bit stringy and tough on the bone (but my friend who ordered it really enjoyed it - so I guess it’s a case of “one man’s shank is another’s….” Will definitely recommend this and would definitely be going back sooner than later

Could have gone to a better place. The food was bland, the customer interaction was dull. Overall,.... the place needs a revamp.

We had a very worst experience in there with my kids ,the server were very rude and was literally pulling the plates and cutlery from them .Did not show the manners to apologise even after notification. Don't recommend this place for any one who want to dine in with kids as they are not kids friendly. I even notified to the manager who barely find time to ask and clarify why we were not fine??This was my kids first time in the Uk going out and have dine in and they literally hated it.

Good location, manager on shift was unbothered and was uninterested when he got our order wrong multiples times, didn’t offer any apology throughout the meal and made us feel like it was our fault. Poor customer service. Lovely location and decent premises for dining in. Food was OK value for money but nothing amazing would get a better Curry delivered if you shopped around wouldn’t argue with visiting again for a cheap boys night out. I’d you’re looking for good service and feeling like a respected customer I’d look elsewhere.

We eat out a lot and have been to restaurants all over the world and I can say without a doubt that this the WORST restaurant we’ve ever been to. There were about 20 of us and not one person had anything good to say about the food. The meats were old and boiled and then all cooked in the same sauce. So every dish was virtually the same. The spices in the dishes were not cooked properly so you just ended up crunching raw spices and raw chilli powder. This made the dishes just taste of nothing but chilli and they were inedible. Even the king prawn puri starter tasted the same and was too greasy, with only one finely chopped prawn in it. I honestly could have done better with a can of dog food and a bottle of chilli sauce. Because we had paid a ridiculous amount of money for such terrible food, we didn’t want to leave it so we had it packed to take it away with us for our dogs. Between us, we have 7 dogs and using it as a dog food mixer is all it’s fit for. We were going to cut a birthday cake after the meal, but we just wanted to get out of there, so we went back home to cut the birthday cake. Dealing with an obnoxious waiter was bad enough, but then the head waiter made matters worse when we paid the bill. He DEMANDED a tip!!! He was lucky we even paid for that muck and we would have gladly given a tip without being asked, if the food was any good. Here’s a tip I’m gladly giving… Either get a chef who can cook, get better waiters or call in an official receiver for bankruptcy. Take pride in your work, so people will show their appreciation and you won’t have to demand tips. Here’s a tip for anyone reading this… Avoid this place. Don’t waste your time and money.

Cannot recommend this place enough: went on a Monday evening and it was quite quiet. The atmosphere is very sleek and professional. Service was quick and diligent, servers were kind and obviously very dedicated to giving us a great experience. Were delighted when we received mango chutney on the house with our poppadoms. As for the food, the lamb samosas and onion bhajis were delicious and crispy. For mains my partner and I had chicken korma and tikka masala. They were incredible, and packed full of flavour without being too spicy. The korma base was deliciously sweet and coconut-y. Additionally, loved the mango Lassi drink, it tasted like a creamy mango yoghurt/milkshake. I'll definitely be going again and bringing more friends.

We had a really nice evening at the Majliss, celebrating my daughters birthday. The food was good, good portions and the bill was reasonable which makes a change! The staff were nice and accommodating.

Was highly recommended from a friend. Will not bring going again and wish I had read the reviews before hand as had the same experience. We ordered takeaway and the prawn madras had a terrible taste that we could not eat more than a few spoons. We visited them several times a few years ago and really liked their madras, so it is a shame.

I keep being drawn back to this restaurant where the staff are friendly, knowledgeable and helpful. The extensive menu contains many surprises - the honey duck with strawberries is unexpectedly delightful.

Very good food n very testy i will bring my family again

First time to this great restaurant. Excellent food, in a light neat layout. Few ornaments and good lighting - we had the Goan Chicken, a Fish curry and Prawn shashliek. Subtle and delicious.

Okay so Saturday night maybe not the best time to go. However an hour wait between starter and main wasn't good. The attitude of the gentleman that finally brought our meals was at best questionable. The dish my partner ordered was missing ingredients principly aubergine. The yogurt rahita was decidedly dodgy.All pointed out at the time too. It seemed as if the waiters could either not hear what was being said or couldn't understand what we were asking. Will not recommend nor be in any hurry go back there.

Great establishment for Indian staple curries, byrianis, breads, poppadums and drinks in a friendly and polished environment

Food was excellent, however we were overcharged to a deceptive degree and when I sat with the waiter and went through an itemised bill, we had been overcharged the waiter accepted that he had overcharged and did not apologise, just said ‘fine pay then’. So rude bad service and borderline charlatanism. The other tables we were next to feel they had been overcharged.

Don’t be deceived by the articles and accolades, this place may once have been worthy of these awards but clearly not anymore. Food is bland, poorly presented, rice was undercooked. The service really depends on the colour of your skin for one waiter.

Takeaway order through deliveroo arrived 2 hours after order. No explanation, no apology. Will never order from them again

Ordered delivery at 6:30pm and it didn’t arrive until 8:30pm. The food was lukewarm and certainly not worth the wait.

Ordered at 9pm, received an email at 10pm saying the order is declined. Waste of time, avoid.

Only get a takeaway from this place if you want it 2 hours later. Absolute joke, called to enquire about delivery 90 mins after making order; got told order was on it’s way without even checking any details or asking address. Then got an email saying food was only then being cooked. Another call later, food turned up at 10pm when we were past being hungry; customer service abismal as kept acting if it wasn’t an issue yet offering no solution. Will not be ordering from here again as no apologies, staff couldn’t care less. Spend your money elsewhere.

Far from Indian food. Expect a 1hr wait for your meal (experienced twice). Little to distinguish between dishes as the curry bases are the same just with different meats/veg added to it. Please double check items on your bill before paying. Yahan mat hi khao toh better hai

Starter was ok, mistakes made on main course, ordered Chicken Korai, partner got old leather boot lamb, I ordered Sagg Lamb got the same tough leather boot lamb, staff very kind knocked the price off one main meal, and avoid the Cobra non alcoholic beer, horrible taste, will not go back in any hurry!!!
