what a shame, 3 of our orders were fine but the small plate fish chips and peas and classic brunch were cold and overcooked. Youngman who was the chef or cook should be ashamed of himself. there is no way I would of produced such a poor plate of food small plate or otherwise. I didn;t complain as I had to ask 3 times for someone to clear and clean the table. 3rd time visiting the red lion but not sure Ill be visiting again. I know you get what you pay for but at least it should be edible.

Absolutely the worst pub I have ever been to the food uncooked manager literally told me to piss off so unprofessional

The pub claiming that they can’t do toast because the machine is broken, when asked what about a grill they said it wasn’t on and that they wouldn’t be willing to grill bread to make toast as it takes to long. Someone who is a qualified chef definitely thinks that this isn’t an acceptable excuse, any chef/cook who can’t grill bread to make toast should not be in a kitchen. What an insult

Absolutely rubbish! Staff not very helpful, missing parts of our meal. Brought it out after we had finished. You would have thought they would have taken it back. And was warm. Guess you get what you pay for,

Very noisy. Food was good as usual. Very busy. Quite a wait for food. Good menu choices. A little too busy and noisy for my liking.

As mentioned above we waited for the January special offers before stopping here. The pub itself is quite big so there was enough space for our group of 4, easily finding a table. A round of four drinks cost us barely £7 which was amazing, but in general the atmosphere was good and we felt welcomed by staff. The bar was a bit slow but understandable given the large rounds people were ordering, so overall we really enjoyed our time here and will come again sometime in the future.

As a Wetherspoons veteran i’ve always backed their establishments for food, quality and value. Unfortunately today I experienced the opposite, Took my partner for breakfast this morning, visually the breakfast matched its usual characteristics until the first bite/mouthful, Working around the plate the warmth didn’t improve, then it was the eggs turn, they were cold!! My partner went to bar to inform the staff of their oversight, she was told they would as theyre not cooked? And only placed in the microwave!? She reluctantly order us some more, as we continued to eat our warm offerings another member of the staff brought our replacement eggs, we tasted and they were colder than the previous!? She asked want we would like to do about it, offering a drink? And we declined as the ‘moment’ had gone, in hindsight i suppose we should of took both entire breakfasts back to be heated/cooked rather than perceiving with the cool food.

Dirty and filthy public area and tables, I dred to think what it is like behind the scene, poor food availability not even roast chicken on a Sunday at 1pm, will not be bothering to waste my time again or my standards, staff do their best and need more hands on deck but overall grubby and poor food availability, needing more staff to raise standards,

You pay for what you get. Filthy tables, unclean carpet. Tried to get attention of staff to clean table over from previous occupants, half an hour later we managed to get it clean! Definitely wasn't service with a smile If you want COVID this is a breeding ground it. Come on Wetherspoons up your game! Even cheap expects cleanliness

1st time and last time I will Ever have the Beyond meat Burger I've never tasted anything so Vile in my life. So once I was asked how the food was I told her that it was Vile and she said that I've never tried it myself and sorry that's it .. With the table still full up with main plates and she brings along the puddings.. Didn't even offer my Money back or even a free drink. I will never be coming back again it's Terrible service and food .yuck

We have breakfast here many times and it had always been good, but today, in particular was brilliant. Although a bit of a wait, that was totally worth it, everything was well presented, staff were attentive and asked us if we enjoyed our food. The guy behind the bar was smiley and polite and presented the drinks lovely and with care. I just wanted to say considering how busy it was, the staff were amazing. A great breakfast experience 😃

My family gathered to see the graveside Plaque at my wife's grave in Bittern church. We then went over to the Red Lion for breakfast-WE ordered by phone. I must say the food was great and the serving girls and guys helpful and polite-the order arrived in good time. Very Happy

Fuimos a este pub a conocer a nuestros amigos, tomamos una bebida que era café y un par de cervezas con nuestros dos hijos que bebieron coca cola. Cuando fuimos al bar para tomar más bebidas, el gerente del bar no nos sirvió debido a que nuestro hijo de 15 años no tenía identificación. Se podía ver con bastante claridad que las bebidas eran para los 4 adultos, ya que los niños todavía bebían sus coca cola. Debido a que cuestionamos esto, en realidad nos dijeron groseramente que nos fuéramos. El llamado gerente del bar no nos dio su nombre, pero establecimos que se llamaba 'Josh'. Las personas en otras mesas quedaron atónitas y dijeron que hace este tipo de cosas con bastante frecuencia. Piense que JD Weatherspoons necesita realmente considerar a su equipo de administración. Fui para una comida familiar. Estacionamiento gratuito de dos horas en un estacionamiento cercano, solo el tiempo suficiente. Comida ordenada. Perseguido después de 38 minutos ya que nada llegó. 'Tú eres el próximo. Después de que ordenó la cocina nos avisó con 45 minutos de retraso. 'No hay preocupación o disculpa. En una nota positiva, la comida era buena. En general, no se molestaría en ir de nuevo.

I had lunch at this pub with my family after a major refurbishment of the red lion.. I didn't like the atmosphere it felt really empty and decidedly lacking any ambience.The food was not very nice either Would not go back there or recommend it

This pub is only a 10 minute walk away so it's become our local pub! We really like it here. It's a Wetherspoons so cheap & cheerful but staff are always friendly and helpful, food is reasonable & we always enjoy ourselves when we visit. The kids enjoy the kids meals & the pizza's are delicious. We've tried them all & they're gorgeous! Highly recommend this place. Can get a bit busy & loud so try to find a booth to sit at.

Went here for dinner around 8pm on a wed night. Sat outside where a young man (potentially not even 18) was storming around swearing and shouting about a girl who was sat inside, all witnessed by staff clearing tables. He then went inside and threw a glass at a group of girls inside. Came back outside, finished his jug of cocktail, sat there for around 20min before throwing 2 glasses at the window next too me and getting into his taxi. Staff couldn't care less, anyone could have been seriously hurt (including myself) staff chose to turn a blind eye. Absolute discrace. When I went for dinner didn't expect to leave with glass in my hair.

I went for breakfast with my husband and we both decided to have a large full English. The price is very low considering how much food you get. It was warm and tasty. No complaints at all. Good service and the staff are very friendly.

When this pub does well, it does very well but quite often you have to clear your own table before you sit down. It often runs out of basic food as well; no fish on fish night? Last time I visited, they had run out of pizzas real ale. Not a good move considering it is a pub.

Whilst out shopping decided to have a late breakfast here. Lovely clean pub, toilets immaculate, food scrummy as well as very reasonable prices. Fill up as many times for coffees including lattes, cappacinos etc. The staff are really friendly as well. Would highly recommend

Wetherspoons are what they are ... good economical places for food and drink. The place is clean and the staff friendly and cheerful. I ordered the pulled chicken with chips and a hot sauce. I must admit it was good, chicken well cooked and hot and tasty. The sauce was good and spicy. I had a garlic bread as well and that was ok, could do with a bit more butter on it for me. Overall I was satisfied so that good. Would eat here again that's for sure.

Wetherspoons estándar, muy contentos con el servicio rápido y la buena comida. Para toda la familia en el día (aunque no lo diría tanto por las noches). También tener servicio de mesa a través de la aplicación es muy útil! Es muy útil cuando tienes un bebé en la silla alta.

Me sorprendieron algunas de las críticas negativas, ya que he comido en este pub con mi familia al menos 3 veces en los últimos 6 meses y no tenía más que un buen servicio, excelente comida y bebida a precios que simplemente no puedes conseguir en otro lugar.

Probando las hosterías locales y fue la Noche de Curry como especial para las noches de jueves. Comimos Cordero al Curry con samosas y cebolla baji con Mango Chutney. Era muy sabroso y venía con una bebida gratis. Tomé una pinta de John Smith y mi compañero tuvo un vino tinto, muy sabroso y con una excelente relación calidad-precio.

Breakfast still no good can't even cook eggs properly, beans look like they been made the day before bacon not to good neither and the portion size of a large breakfast is a kids portion

Been here twice now. The first was in the evening which was very busy and the staff can’t seem to cope. In turn they are snappy at at customers and really put me off going again. The latest was for a breakfast meeting up with some friends. I was quite reluctant to because of the first experience I had. However the staff were polite and the breakfast was good. I would recommend having a breakfast but avoid when busy.

Ok breakfast, the water for the tea had a nasty taste. The bacon was overdone to the point of shoe leather!

A friend asked to meet here on Tuesday about 12.15,I agreed to give it another try after a previous poor experience,We walked in to find loads of tables piled with dirty crockery and from the remains it was obviously breakfast remains.The few tables that were clear were dirty and sticky,as were the menus and I had to look for a member of staff to wipe it,which she did without moving anything.

Need to give a shout-out to tonight’s manager (the chap with the beard and glasses wearing a shirt 27/06). He was all over the shop, made my visit better several times just by being knowledgeable and directing staff to make my requests simple and easy. Hats off to you sir, we didn’t even speak but you made my visit better than all the other times I’ve been here. Keep doing what you’re doing

Excellent meals and free drink and a cosy corner with my lady friend Pub was busy but service was quick.

We went there as a group of 4. The food was good - standard “chain” food. Staff were friendly. Reasonable range of drinks. One area for improvement would be to clear more tables. We arrived at the end of lunch and there were several empty tables but not many were cleared from previous customers.

Having visited a few times before we thought why not go with what we know, whoops what a mistake! The bar staff need to listen to what you say and service the customers instead of yappin to each other. The glasses need to be cleaned it took 4 yes 4 chances to actually get a clean glass! Saying that the food was good when it came shame, it took a long long time it wasn't even busy. The tables were dirty and looked as if they needed a good clean let a lone just a general tidy. I think its time to move on to somewhere new.....

This used to be a lovely pub but compared to other Wetherspoons we've been too, it has gone downhill. No matter when we come, there are always dirty tables which we have to clean before sitting down. Never enough staff so trying to get a drink or order food is a nightmare. Many people standing at the bar drinking so you can't get to it to order. Not everyone has the app to order their food and drinks. People should be moved away from the bar once they've ordered and not permitted to congregate or maybe have proper queing system so everyone orders in turn? Also, the place could do with a good clean. The dust on the wooden panels by table 16 is enough for me to write my name in! Saying that, even though we've always had to wait for food, it's always been hot and tasty when it comes. The Red Lion just needs to have more staff and be more organised.

We came in and ordered 2 breakfasts. 1 hour later we were still waiting even after asking the staff twice. We were then told it was because I'd asked for no beans? I've worked in pubs all my life so had to laugh out loud at this ridiculous information. After 1hr 2p minutes it arrived. Covered in beans. Freezing cold and swimming in grease. No butter portions and my partners had no bsvin or toast. Excellent. He starting eating his and asked for the missing bits. I asked for them to take mine away and give me a refund. My partner them waited another 10 minutes and still no bacon or toast. I asked for the money back for his too as he's waited and waited. We were then told he couldn't have it as he's started eating it? It was 90% still left and he never had the bacon or toast to start with! Absolutely disgusting food and shocking service!

Called in lunchtime for coffee and snack, busy, noisy typical wetherspoons, good value refillable coffee a bonus. No complaints

Out of 5 different occasions I have visited, I have had one good meal, one passable meal but a very long wait, one over cooked meal, and 2 cold meals. I would not recommend people to eat here, and I will not do so again.

Wouldn’t serve breakfast at 12 on the dot to start with, then didn’t have a sauce for a wrap, finally got served which took 20minutes because they left a girl who’s first day it was on her own to serve (not her fault in the slightest), food came fairly quickly luckily. We then ordered drinks on the app thinking this would be quicker, a few staff stood behind the bar not doing anything and still took 20minutes just for 2 drinks to be served, have never had this much of an issue in any Wetherspoons before even on a busy day like st.patricks day.....

My wife and I are regular Wetherspoon customers, appreciating the value for money and normally good food. This evening I ordered a medium steak which when it arrived was well undercooked so I asked for it to be cooked further. When it eventually arrived it appeared to be cooked but when cut it was still raw in the center, and was full of sinues. The chips, peas and tomato were all cold. I complained to the very pleasent Manager who apologised, but at the end of the day the meal was absolutely terrible and a waste of money.

Excellent food,service and atmosphere. Busy lunchtime period but staff very friendly and helpful. Can definately recommend.

I had a large breakfast and my fiancee had a small breakfast food was OK but when it was brought to our table the food was cold and we couldn't eat it but on the plus side the Belgian hot chocolate was really nice and free refills on tea and coffee all day is a bonus

Visited on a few occasions with the family for a light lunch. The service we received was very good along with decent food at excellent prices. What's not to like!?!

Came here for some convivial beers. Decided to order food and that is where this visit went downhill. Ordered a burger and some extra garlic bread and a pizza for my friend. Pizza and burger was cold and I can honestly say that the garlic bread was the highlight of the meal. The pizza and burger were both cold. I didn’t complain but neither did any one come over to check that all was ok. They also were not interested in clearing our plates. The place seems nice but the staff should really concentrate on serving customers not fooling around in the glass washer area. I don’t think I will ever order a burger from a wetherspoons again.

We went here a few times before and enjoyed it. So we went there again. Very glad we did. Another nice time.

I’m not a fussy eater, in fact I’m quite the opposite, but a common theme I’m finding in Weatherspoon’s is their inability to cook a decent breakfast, their chefs really are fitters and turners... they fit good ingredients into pots and turn it into crap. The bacon was hard, the fried eggs were cooked in oil to hot, so that the bottoms were crunchy and the yolks were over cooked, the tomato was charred on top yet had barely touched the pan/grill so it wasn’t cooked through properly , the baked beans were just a tad off being bone dry, in fact the only redeeming quality was the toast, if I wasn’t with friends and in a hurry I would have complained. My advice to is don’t go there, you wouldn’t eat a fry-up at home of such bad quality so why go there and pay for it.

I have eaten here several times without any problems but the latest visit will probably be my last. I ordered a burger which was supposed to come with blue cheese sauce. When I checked there was a tiny scrape of the sauce under the burger. I approached a member of staff to explain this and was promptly told to look under the burger, I state that I was told not asked! I just said it wasn't enough and walked away sensing that the attitude was bad. A couple of minutes later he arrived at the table, plonked a dish of the sauce down and loudly announced for everyone to hear "there's some extra". I stated that it would be nice to have some in the first instance so it wasn't extra. I would expect an apology when this happens but his attitude got worse. He turned around saying "I told you to look under the burger, the kitchen said they put it there". I moved the burger and showed him. He said "yeah well I brought you some didn't i" Somebody correct me if I'm wrong but I am a paying customer, expecting to get what I pay for and if it's not right I expect it to be put right with an apology. The couple at the next table got up and left. The food was ok but I don't think I'll be returning any time soon.

Have been here several times over the past year and food and service have been excellent on this hopefully isolated occasion the service was delayed possibly due to technical issues or lack of staff. Please take note and look into this.

I went here on a Thursday during half term and as you'd expect there were a few children in but they were no trouble,most of the customers were 60+, there was a good variety of very reasonably priced beers served by friendly bar staff, for lunch I had the managers special meal 14 oz steak with the trimmings, the steak was cooked just as I'd asked and was very tasty,the pub is situated at the end of the shopping precinct, there is plenty of outside seating on the ground floor with seperate areas for smokers , there is more seating on the first floor with more outside seating, overall I found this a very pleasant place to go and have a drnk/meal and will go again if and when I'm in the area

Myself and my partner visited the Red Lion on Sunday for breakfast, and the visit will forever be known as "sausage saga Sunday."We both ordered a large breakfast, my partner paid to add extra bacon and extra sausage to his. When the breakfast arrived, said sausage was visibly absent, so he alerted the server to this and she went off to find it. Being sat next to the bar we were then witness to the conversation between the bar staff and kitchen, with the kitchen refusing to hand over the sausage because apparently you can only add one extra item to a breakfast?! The waitress approached our table to break the news so again it was explained that we had paid for this sausage and expected its arrival. Cue another argument between the kitchen and bar staff that went back and forth for a good ten minutes. Eventually the manager had to rescue the sausage, and "chef" aka the person who operates the microwave sent it to the table sticking out of a tiny sauce pot. Completely ridiculous, immature and unprofessional behaviour, but then again the guy works in a Wetherspoons kitchen so I doubt he's had any training other than reading the manual to check he's programming the right times for the correct wattage. When you pay for something you expect it on your plate, pretty simple really. Obviously he's just very precious about his little sausage.

Went here for breakfast with partner and friends! Really is a great breakfast! Not the first time we’ve been here and the food has never dissapointed! Partner had cappuccino which looked great! I opted for the lavazza refill which was honestly awful!

Reading the reviews that clearly show customer dissatisfaction with breakfasts served somewhat lukewarm, I find it difficult to comprehend why this poor service continues! (This seems to be the norm with a few other Wetherspoons too).I find that obtaining a hot breakfast is a complete lottery even when specifically requested for at the time of ordering & payment!Payment makes me the customer & it is the customer that writes these reviews based on experiences that can influence other potential customers! Wetherspoons would be wise to remember this!Poor temperature aside, I do find the service is generally quite good despite giving the impression that all Wetherspoons operate with one person short!Wake up J.D. you can do better than this, & if you cannot deliver hot breakfasts, then perhaps you really should not try!

We've been in several times since the Wetherspoon conversion, as we like Wetherspoons - decent value food, and a decent range of keenly priced beers in a family friendly environment. This is just what is needed in Bitterne. But each time we go there's a problem - either with the beer or the food, and sometimes both. On the last visit there was also problems with pricing up the bill. It appears to a lottery if you are going to get your food served at your table or if you have to go and chase it up. And it's a lottery if the food will be as ordered. It is unlikely to be served hot. Complaints are accepted silently - there is little attempt to make up for mistakes, or to offer compensation. On a previous visit we simply asked for our money back because the food was served late and cold. They offered to cook it again, but we'd already waited long enough. On the most recent visit the bill was priced incorrectly, and it took two members of staff five minutes at the till to make the adjustment down, and even then it was still 10p too much. The food had to be chased up, and was wrong. A man at the next table sent his meal back three times, getting increasingly frustrated. I keep hoping that whatever organisation or management issues they have here will be sorted. I have never known a Wetherpoon to have such a prolonged period of problems, and it has to be resolved at some point!

Even though the place was fairly quiet still had to wait to get served apart from that no real complaints we only had a drink so couldn't comment on the food

This was the first time I've been here was ok not a 10 out of 10 I had a mixed grill was nice but they did not ask how to cook my steak and for me it was over done, staff was nice but end of the day it's just a pub with a cheap meals so not bad

Folks, if, like me, you like to take your clients for a working lunch, or you like to relax and do a bit of work on your laptop, don't waste your time going to the Red Lion.The broadband is completely unreliable. Regardless of where you are sat, upstairs or downstairs, the connection, when it connects at all, will drop every 2 minutes.Total crap and, as mentioned in the title, the management don't give a toss.Saying that, the staff are friendly - when they are allowed to be. The other day I witnessed the manager telling off a member of staff for chatting to customers too much. What a great contribution to the local community. Not.

This was a good first visit and we left with a good impression. The establishment was well lit and the decor was brighter than most Wetherspoons so it had a good ambience. The staff we interacted with were bright and interested and came across well. The food arrived promptly and was at the right temperature. So yes we would go back (theres only two others we could say that of) at some time in the near future.

An exceptional Wetherspoons, the decor, quality of the refurbishment, all first class. Lots of familiar staff from other JDW's in Southampton. Clean tables, food looks great, toilets should get an award. Certainly not your average 'Spoons, well done

When we arrived at this wetherspoons there were hardly any clean tables. We wanted a fairly large table as there were 4 of us, plus a baby in a pram. We sat at a table and politely asked a member of staff to clean it. She rudely replied 'well.... i need the table number first. As you can see we're quite busy' no apology. When we went to the bar to order we were greeted by two miserable staff members who clearly did not want to be there. Sighing loudly as they poured drinks and yelling 'whos next' in a very abrupt and moody tone. To be fair our food arrived promptly and did taste nice... after it was slammed down on the table by a waitress who i'm presuming does know how to smile...we just didnt see her do it once during our whole visit. Overall.. abysmal customer service which, even though the food was ok, completely ruined our expirience.

Myself and 5 of my friends when to this pub for my birthday. We arrived at 7.30pm. we found a very dirty table which one of the staff cleaned but with a face like she had swallowed a wasp to say she was not happy in her job is a understatement. We went to the bar for drinks joined the queue, one of the bar staff said not queue so went up to the bar. The man behind us when got served first, do not a good start to the evening. Back to the table to choose are meals up the the bar again ordered food told meals would be 20 minutes. Back at the table we have a chat and waited for are meals ,40 minutes later no meals. Back to the bar to be told by yet again a for very happy staff they are short staffed. Why did they not tell us at the start but they took are order and said nothing. So told again 20 minutes. Back at the table other people were starting to get cross with waiting too. So I went up to the bar and asked for the manager. He was in the kitchen so they said they would get him. One hour and 10 minutes of waiting are meals arrived. Some of which were cold. We did asked for a round of drinks which because of the time we decided not to take. The manager came down but not to us . The table behind us got a full refund and a voucher for a free round of drinks and a meal for 3. We got no voucher no apologies nothing . To say we were not impressed is a understatement.!!!!!!

on arrival staff not overly friendly. I waited at the bar and staff totally ignored me to serve another gentleman who arrived at the bar after me she appeared more interested in keeping a regular happy was me and my friends conclusion. after ordering food and a hot drink was kept waiting another 20 mins or so for a regular breakfast. on arrival bacon looked like it had been deep fried egg yolk was virtually raw and tomato was undercooked. .couldn't eat egg or bacon.. on removing my plate young girl just whisked it away with no conversation on how was your meal which is commonplace in most establishments. not sure I would be tempted to go again as keep feeling quite queasy all day. I was very disappointed as was looking forward to going there. décor is lovely I must admit and it was clean and tidy.

we walked in to bitterne and called in here for a coffee after waiting to be served for ages as the staff was busy doing other things we ordered our filter coffee , wish we hadn't as it was like MUD and COLD the canister must of been standing there for ages , the lady who served us over charged us twice so she couldn't of known the pricesthe place is big and clean there was tables there with dirty plates on left there for ages staff couldn't be bothered to clear awaytoilets are very clean

Stopped off for a couple of drinks after work as never been before. Very happily surprised. Huge outside area, clean and pleasant inside with quick efficient service

We visit wetherspoons all over the country but have never been to one as bad as this. On entering, we struggled to find a table for lunch. This was because of tables meant for 4 + being occupied by one person. I counted six tables occupied singularly. The only tables available were high stools. I mentioned this to staff who said that they were regulars and that they were their usual tables. Rot. People walked out due to no room. The food we ordered was cold and overcooked. Most disappointing place I've been.
