We moved to Pevensey recently and The Red Lion is our new “local”. It’s warm and inviting, the staff are lovely and the food is always brilliant, portion sizes are good and quality of food is on point. Prosecco deals would be amazing as it does put us off slightly the price of a bottle compared to Tesco next door but if you want a night out then it is what it is! We are regulars and enjoy our time here. Music on a Friday/Saturday night would be great instead of Sundays but that’s just us im sure others like it on a Sunday.

This is a very nice pub, fairly traditional, nothing too fancy. Why then, are prices astronomical? £17.60 for 2 pints and 2 packets of crisps! What! Don't even pay that in London! £6.80 for a pint and £2 for crisps! Needless to say, only stayed for the one.

The wait for our food was excessive, nearly an hour despite there only being one other table occupied, the steak meals we ordered were supposed to be 8oz steak. What we recieved was maximum 4oz, it was essentially a piece od steak you would recieve on a mixed grill, nothing was hot , the chips barely cooked. The staff were doing thier best but I will not be recommending the red lion to anyone for any reason, just keep on driving, there are eating places within a mile whichever route you take!!

Booked a table for a special birthday with my family. We were seated with our drinks, then told there were no roasts (it was a Sunday) as they had run out. Started looking at the menu to then be told the kitchen was closed! Absolutely disgusted. We had booked in advance so to be told this was extremely upsetting. We left straight away and luckily got a table at another much nicer restaurant. We won’t be returning.

I visited this restaurant for my wedding anniversary meal. I had previously checked the menu online to ensure they catered for vegetarians. They had one hot meal choice so we made a booking. When we arrived and were given menus I noticed the only vegetarian option was a salad. When I asked the waitress why there was no hot food for vegetarians I was told ‘ the chef thinks vegetarians should eat fish, and there is fish on the menu so they can eat that’,I asked to see a manager but was told there wasn’t one.Despite emailing, contacting them via their web page and commenting on their Facebook page, asking for an explanation for such an appalling statement I have been ignored. This restaurant is NOT vegetarian friendly and their customer service is appalling.

We only live a short walk away from the Red Lion and have often popped in for a pint to meet friends and have often enjoyed the live music.I had a rare night off tonight to spend with with my family and the obvious choice was to walk over to the Red Lion as we had never actually eaten there.Unfortunately, following tonight's experience we shall be sticking to popping in occasionally for a pint.Unfortunately it was a very poor experience from start to finish. It was not very busy so 'Eat out to help out' is certainly not a plausible excuse. There were only 2 families in the dining area by the time we finally departed. It took 1 hour and 45 minutes to get 1 course and 1 drink each, and that was with a booking. The second round of drinks was charged to the bill but never delivered to the table, so after a 35 minute wait for them we cancelled them.We waited to be asked about desert and after 20 mins finally got a menu. After another 15 mins of being ignored we gave up and paid at the bar.The staff were friendly when you saw them, but could be overheard making comments about each other. The most shocking was staff members as well as being less than complementry about other tables. Not very professional in front of other paying customers. There was no interaction with customers. We were basically ignored for most of the duration. Evenings out as a family are rare for us and we were really looking forward to this. Such a disappointment and feels like a real waste of an evening. We mentioned this at the bar and was told it was due to restrictions. Basic customer service should not be affected. Reading the reviews from before lockdown it sounds as if this is an excuse. Can recommend for a quick drink and live bands when they are allowed to do this.

Absolutely shocking. Management take no responsibility for days when they can't get it right, run out of drinks, run out of food, slow staff. How is this place even still in business! Family of 11 visited today for 2 members birthday celebrations. One meal was served stone cold on a cold plate, one roast chicken dinner was pink and obviously undercooked and all the rest were only just luke warm. As this was a treat and being paid for by one of the family members none of us wanted to make a fuss, appear ungrateful and make the dinner uncomfortable and it was only when others had finished it came to light. Very disappointing, won't visit again or recommend sadly.

After a previous good experience since the refurb we returned 28th December 2019. The surroundings were as if we were over spill and were placed by the snooker table it was scruffy and uninviting. One of the 'waitresses' looked as though she really did not want to be there and was unsmiling and, curt bordering on rudeness. service was poor. and food not overly inviting. We found after a trip to the loo there was a wall menu but but made aware of it when ordering initially. As one pays the same price whether staff are busy or not it was very expensive. We should all have the same efficiency from staff whether sat in the restaurant or not and if whoever is taking bookings should decline bookings if they cannot meet the expected standard. I personally will not revisit which makes me sad.

Been coming here for a while now. But last night was the worst we have ever had. We went for rib eye steak. Well it took ages to come out but that was the best bit - steak was disgusting and a real let down. The plate was completely filled with salad and the mushroom well! Cooked dry and like eating rubber... chips were the only thing that was nice - a real let down as normally this has been a nice place to eat- this is the 2 nd bad experience we and others have had. We came here for lunch. The pub was not that busy so we sat down at a window table. Unfortunately the table had not been cleaned, when the bar maid came over to take our order we asked her if she could wipe down the table. She came back with a cloth and proceeded to scatter the crumbs over the table! It did not get a proper wipe down unfortunately. Whilst waiting for our lunch which was a long wait we found that our glasses had stuck to the table because it was so sticky. Food arrived, large portions but not that great to taste. The grilled gammon came covered in oil! Chicken pies were very large portions, too big really. Fish and chips was ok, nothing special.Sadly I won't be returning to this pub for lunch.

The room was ok but was only allowed to book the function room if you paid for minimum of 50 people. We paid £10 per head, an extra £1.50 for teas and coffee and 10 per cent service charge. The food was poor. The sandwiches were dried up and fillings were poor. Chicken goujons were fish shaped nuggets. The coffee was so weak it didn’t taste of anything. To add insult to injury they wanted a 50 per cent deposit when booking which they took from my account twice, the second time was the day after the event.

Pub used to be terrific. Great food, beer, friendly crowd, legendary quiz night. Sadly the pub has recently changed hands and it is a shadow of its former self. Beer quality consistently sub-par - I don't think they change the pipes or clean the barrels with anything like the regularity that you might expect. Staff retention has dropped like a stone - lots of the great long-serving staff have seemingly been forced out. Rumours that the quiz night might be scrapped - that would sadly be the final nail in the coffin for the Red Lion. Unless the management changes tack entirely, I may need to look elsewhere.

If you would like a decent pint of beer I suggest you find another pub to attend. The quality of the lager and ale on draft is truly appalling. The management has also removed the vast majority of recognisable brands and replaced them with cheaper alternatives. I am also informed by friends that they have witnessed numerous acts of violence in the Red Lion over the past week. Not a family friendly environment (and a very expensive family option if you do decide to use it!). As someone that used to attend this pub on a regular basis, I can only recommend relocating to another Harvey’s pub such as The Dinkum in Polegate. Much better beer and the manager is very welcoming and accommodating.

There is a lovely seating are outside at the back for the pub as well. We went to eat as a family and a friend joined us. We ordered different types of meals. Dad had fish and chips which was a huge piece of fish ample chips and lots of tartar sauce, the batter was ultra crispy and not at all greasy. Mum and Maria had a half a roast chicken which came with chips and salad. It's also had gravy and garlic mayo. The chicken was really moist and great salad had a really good dressing. I had a chicken kebab with chips and taziki and again a beautiful salad. The chicken had a beautiful marinade and had charrilled peppers and courgettes. Desserts were declined because we were too full up! Although we weren't in the restaurant area service was really good and we were asked if we wanted additional drinks too. Something has changed here, this pub is nowhere near as good as our last visit. Sunday family meal, we ended up in 'public bar' to find a table. We shared this with 2 other couples who sat fondling each other and using language that I would sooner not hear with kids present. The food was overpriced, mediocre quality and poorly presented. I asked for straws for the kid's drinks and was told that they may be able to find one! They did find 2 in the end. The 4 year old in our group wanted to try 3 flavours of ice cream but was told that she would have to have a full scoop of each at £1.50 per scoop. The sirloin was very chewy with a lot of potatoes but hardly any vegetables, one cabbage leaf and one carrot between 3 meals. The overpriced fish was served in soggy batter and was twice the price of wetherspoons and half the quality. The staff wouldn't know of our dissatisfaction because they didn't bother to ask. My last review here was very good but this pub has fallen to poor in my view.

My friend and I have just come from lunch at the red lion. Always been happy with everthing. However, today a family with two children and a big gun dog? came in. Was very suprised to have a dog sitting next to us when we were enjoying lunch. Then they started feeding the dog with their food. The dog also sat on the guys lap. We were really not happy. Dogs should not be allowed to come where people eat.!!! Makes me wonder if we will eat there again.

Visited on a Friday evening. Had a fabulous meal. Crispy sqid starter in a lovely light batter and tiger prawns in garlic coriander butter. Both very good. I had chicken supreme although I would say this was more chicken chasseur with its dark sauce but it tasted ' supreme' !! Really good flavour. Apple crumble dessert was quite large for me but again very tasty plus cheese board for my husband. Everything was very reasonably priced. Live music (Haley) started at nine o'clock. A very nice evening all round.

A spare of the moment visit for a late lunch. Same feel to the bar area as it always was, but didn't match the menu at all. Great choice of food, something for everyone. Thought it was on the pricey side at first but the quality and portion sizes justified the prices. The chips are chunky, plentiful and very good.

We organised a midweek lunch here for 7 people following my aunt's funeral. We were given a round table in the restaurant area to the left of the entrance, which we had to ourselves. Everybody enjoyed the food, accompanied by well kept Harveys Best. Service was friendly, efficient and unobtrusive and we had a very relaxed meal. I understand from local friends that the pub has been refurbished recently by Harveys and everything is clean and inviting.

We had a lovely meal in pleasant surroundings. The staff were friendly and efficient and the singer was an added bonus that we weren't expecting. Very nice evening.

We visited the red lion last night for our friends anniversary dinner 12 of us in total!! wow what can I say what a disappointment!! We ordered starters that took 30mins to arrive which half of them were muddled up with other tables.. then we ordered our mains nearly a hour wait to which no one said or came to tell us there was any wait. We ordered drinks that didn't arrive after 25mins we asked again for our drinks to be told they were trying to chill the procecco which is why none of our drinks had came out!! When our mains finally arrived one person on our table had been forgotten n was told food would be another 15 mins for her!! Not an apology from anyone! When we complained to the "manager" wow what a rude and unprofessional manager she was. Telling us maybe next time go somewhere else to eat if we weren't happy!! Utter disgrace!! Never again n never would we recommend! Such a shame management and waiting staff have such bad attitudes as food was nice!!

Used to be a run down oub, but now up there with the Farm which is just down the road, but without the Farm's excessive drink prices. Superb service and very good food.

visited the red lion after being told the food was good,,,,have to say what food we had wasn't bad....but not outstanding, or value for money.. we ordered starters, to be told there was no bread, so first disappointment ..no starter without bread on the menu unless you have olives,,mains took forever to arrive,,,,someone in our ordered fries and wanted tomato ketchup...sorry no ketchup...the food was ok,, for the price the portions were small,,, ordered puds...and two of them came with a different ice cream flavour than was on the menu, neither of us liked the flavour given, we were never asked or told the ice cream advertised wasn't available ..so all in all HUGE disappointment and we certainly wouldn't go back,,,we even had to ask for cutlery ,,,, we were told at 7.45 food was finished..even tho we hadn't finished our meal...however one guy did come over to us and say....its okay you can order desserts...staff on duty hadda shrug shoulders attitude..except for one guy who was helpful

Called in to this local pub for lunch on Monday July 31st with my wife. The bar area lacked character and was dated and dingy. The atmosphere was definitely not helped by the geriatric choice of background music, and I'm 71!! After waiting over 5 minutes at the bar someone eventually arrived from out the back and took my meal and drink order. My drinks eventually arrived at the table but 35 minutes later we were still waiting for our lunch. At this point only 2 couples were eating so they were hardly busy! My wife enquired how much longer our order would be, a young lady checked, disappeared into the kitchen and then arrived with two meals which were taken to another table. No word to us until we commented again and were told that our order had not been passed through to the kitchen. We left and the only good thing to come from this disaster was that we did not pay for our drinks as the barmaid, in apologising, waived the charge. Full marks to her but, sorry, it's nought out of ten for the rest of the experience.

Met a friend here for a meal. Staff were so friendly and helpful. We both had the brie, mushroom and spinach wellington and it was great. Very tasty, vegetables were good. I think what made it though was the staff they were so nice and the girl that served us was really helpful. It is so nice to go somewhere and feel that the staff actually like their job!!

After being disappointed with this place two years ago and writing a terrible review I have to write an outstanding review after visiting the red lion today. I had the pork belly roast and I have to say I think it maybe the best pork belly I have ever had perfectly crispy skin and really tender pork, everyone else's loved there food too can't recommend it enough and the service was fab. Will be returning without a doubt

I took my parents for lunch and we were not disappointed. Excellent menu choices. Staff were patient with our choices and changes. Two guests opted for child portions - thrilled to see the same food as the adults (not frozen fare) in a smaller portion. It was nice to see the tables in the dining hall were not all bunched together. Looking forward to returning to enjoy the outside ambience over the summer.

We went here fore the first time since the refurb and had a great meal, it.s not the cheapest around the area and the menu is a bit limited, but we couldn't fault the food, the alcohol is also on the expensive side, but the excellent service made up for that.

I have already reviewed this in the main hotel site. The drawing rooms are lovely, comfortable chairs, beautiful view, BUT the food and wine by the glass were truly awful. Very poor quality and very expensive. Never again.

This country pub had been on our list for ages and so as it was my birthday weekend we booked for Sunday lunch. We'd checked the menu before booking so we knew the roast was pricey at £24 for the roast beef. We usually pay between £16 and £20 elsewhere. Unfortunately, when it arrived it was disappointing. There was plenty of thinly sliced beef but I found it very fatty and chewy. There were fewer vegetables than expected, half a carrot, 3 very small, very hard roast potatoes and a pile of kale. The Yorkshire pud was large but mainly soggy. The gravy was delicious. Also elements of the dish were less warm than others. The pub is lovely and had a good drinks menu but we were seated in the bar area and had to listen to staff discussing their rotas at length. Perhaps if we'd been in the main restaurant area or outside we'd have had a better experience. Maybe consider your portion sizes especially the veg. We didn't stay for desert.

I have cycled past here so very very often and never tried the cafe. I should have read the reviews on here first! I stopped for a latte and a cake and the guy working here I am sure does not drink coffee. He was so out of his depth with the coffee machine I ended up with just hot milk!! In the old adage “You only get one chance to make a good first impression” Sorry but this time you failed. Yelling at me when I left that I could not go down and look at the lake as I might upset the fishermen having earlier told me there were no fishermen was not worth debating either. In short if you fish here use the cafe, if you are passing…… Keep on passing.
