Came here spontaneously with my 87 year old father for a birthday lunch. We were made to feel welcome from the moment we stepped through the door. The staff were really friendly. The food was lovely. Would recommend the fish and chips and the pies. Great on a summers day with the outside seating.

We had an excellent lunch here today. The friendly staff catered to all of us well, including to my gluten and dairy-free diet. Food portions are really good with smaller-plate options. The atmosphere was relaxed and friendly and we left happy. A splendid start to a lovely day walking, thank you.

Simply a good old pub in Penn.. Better than when we were last there a few years ago. Pleasant location opposite village pond with many ducks, a heron, largish commons, soaring red kites, lofty trees, benches, bus stop, food etc. village shop and obviously popular. Indoor and outdoor tables. Rolling countryside views a few minutes walk away. Tasty lunch, attentive girls as waiters, pleasant atmosphere. Food served quite quickly unlike other also popular nearby Crown inn where meals can take 30-40 tum-rumbling weary mins to arrive. Red Lion to be recommended and we'll return. Probably best to try to book table? Parking a bit awkward at busy times so best to walk to and fro. Area popular for Midsummer Murders filming.

We were staying in the area and this place was about a 15 minute walk. It was such a nice pub though that this was something we did on several occasions and we always enjoyed our time there. It is a classy place with a nice atmosphere and friendly service. They have a great range of beers that are nicely kept and about the right price for this area. The pub it self is extremely comfortable and has it laid-back atmosphere but we were there during good weather so we used to go outside. Here you can find the lovely beer garden with views of the duck pond opposite so kickback and just enjoy a couple of beers while taking in the surroundings.

I rate this pub as excellent. The staff are really good, led my manager Olivia. They are very welcoming, friendly and fun, while also being professional and efficient. The food we had was excellent, so overall a very good combination. I took my walking group (20 of us) here for the first time, so we choose main courses in advance. They were very efficient at communicating menus, arrangements and even last-minute alterations on my part. It is a charming pub inside with a warm atmosphere, plus they also have plenty of outside seating, set back from the road, with a nice view over the duck pond and the village green. All my friends liked their lunch and we will definitely be returning. There are lots of beautiful walks in the local area. Graeme

This was an outstanding evening with GREAT food and service. The experience ticked every box and we will go again. Penn is very competitive with four pub eating venues however I think the Red Lion is the best with GREAT food, good wine/lager/ale, and all for a very fair price. When we left the manageress chased after us because my wife had left her cardigan behind.....so thanks for a wonderful evening .

There coffee taste excellent and ambiance is super. I enjoyed my time sitting there in a cool day. Upon entering, I was greeted by the comforting scent of freshly ground coffee beans mingling with the sweet aroma of baked goods. The interior decor boasted a perfect blend of rustic charm and modern sophistication, with plush armchairs, wooden tables, and soft ambient lighting creating an ambiance that invited patrons to linger and unwind.

A classic pub overlooking the pond in centre of Penn, but usually with no available parking. An above average village pub with a good ambience and welcoming and efficient service But, however good the flavour, five prawns hidden in a plateful of linguine is not a “mains”. On a previous occasion, a gammon steak turned out to be a very salty, thick rasher of bacon

We were drinking all afternoon and waiting for friends to join us when a bottle was plonked on our table, saying the table was reserved at 7.30, so basically go way. We found this very rude as no conversation, just go away by 7.30. I did say the staff were rude and as no member of staff actually talked to us , asking us to move, thought this was rude. They really do not treat regulars with respect and have no basic manners. Will not recommend this pub for hospitality or basic manners.

I came here with my family to grab a drink but mainly some food. When we arrived and asked if they were still serving food, the manager said unfortunately not so we thought "that's a shame" but we had come all the way there so might aswell get a drink. I am 26 years old, and was with my parents who are in their 60s. I was denied a drink because I did not bring my physical ID with me, and I accepted this as I work in hospitality and understood Challenge 25. My father randomly picked a drink to get as he came in from the car park, and then realised they did not have food and I could not get a drink. So we were discussing potentially leaving, and the manager had poured the pint that my father had asked for. We decided to go elsewhere as I was not able to get a drink and none of us could get food. We were calm and respectful, but as we went to leave the manager told us we needed to pay for the drink she had poured. I told her I'm sorry but we will not be paying for a drink we have not touched, especially as you were pouring it as we were discussing going elsewhere because you didn't have food. The manager then proceeded to argue with us, we said she could call the police due to us not paying, and she said there would be no point over one drink. But unfortunately it was worth it enough to lose 3 customers who were going there to spend more than a couple of pounds. She was incredibly rude, completely tone deaf to what was going on around her, and clearly not a fantastic manager if she was willing to lose 3 customers over one pint that was untouched, and didnt offer any crisps or snacks or anything else in order to make any money. So, a terrible experience, we left pretty upset, and the manager was seriously awful.

Popped in here with family to have lunch. There's a nice, simple menu with something for everyone. It's a little pricey in my opinion and there are a few funny things- paying extra for peas of mushy peas with fish and chips? No mention of the fact that the baguette sandwiches come with chips? Not even when we then ordered a side of chips- no-one said- oh the sandwiches already come with chips. So we ended up with a massive amount of extra chips between us all.Maybe a strange thing to comment on, but the side salad was excellent. Often you get some half-hearted iceburg with a few things thrown on top, but this salad was absolutely delicious.Service was a little slow but he food itself was very nice- good quality baguettes (proper French style), delicious lasagne and excellent onion soup. All in all, we would go back, but I do think they should stop charging extra for things that clearly should come with the meal as standard, and make sure that the menu is completely clear as to what comes with what.

After hearing about lots of changes going on we decided to see what all the fuss was about ... what a wise decision !If you're look for a warm, welcoming and delicious night out then The Red Lion will surely fit the bill. I myself had the chicken, leek and mushroom pie - this homely classic lived up to its standards. My wife had the beef lasagne, again you could taste the heart that had gone into it - the only issue was my wife could not finish it all... much to my pleasure !!We sat through to the right as you face the bar by the window, candles lit our dinner along with the warming smell of the log fire. Can't beat that - a proper ambiance of a tradition English village pub !The staff were welcoming, approachable and willing to offer table service despite the 'order-at-the-bar' code which made us feel especially looked after !If you're looking for a cosy, atmospheric and romantic dinner, the picturesque Red Lion in Penn pond is the place to be ! What a non-event!The pub is dim, dowdy, devoid of character or atmosphere! I feel sorry for the staff who were cheerful and efficient enough but the place is a total lost opportunity.A wonderful site on the common in a picturesque village but the impression The Red Lion presents is dowdy, jaded and badly in need of an injection of life!! The menu -a piece of very worn A4, gave us a limited choice, un assisted by a specials menu with equally limited fayre did not inspire so we elected to have the steaks in spite of them being more expensive than usual. I.e. £19. Steaks turned out satisfactory but overall the final tally for a meal in a jaded uninspired atmosphere left us feeling a bit disappointed. Our last visit was New Year's Eve 2016. We live in the village and have given this place so many chances. It is a pretty pub with a great location and we really want to frequent it, but it never fails to disappoint. No one takes responsibility for the over cooked, overpriced food we are habitually served, it is dirty, there are still dead geraniums sitting on the outside tables, cigarette butts everywhere around the door, and the icing on the cake was the Guinness, which my husband consumes in large quantities, was served without any gas, rendering it completely flat and undrinkable and at £4.50 a pint this is unacceptable. The very sweet barmaid said 'the wrong sort of gas' was put on it, but didn't seem bothered that it wasn't fit to drink. This is just the last straw of a series of miserable visits to this once pleasant establishment. Is it ever going to be managed by anyone who gives a damn about its customers? There are only 3 pubs left now in this busy village- it's a shame that this one has become totally unvisitable now. It would be good if one of the managers were to respond to these comments, but I notice there hasn't been any response to any previous bad reviews Ive looked at.

Although I am a real ale fan who favours 'the Horse and Jockey' in the same village, the Red Lion has real character and feels real cosy.In the summer months it's great to sit outside and enjoy the view towards the green/pond.In winter it's great to enjoy the real fires and feel the 'history' of this beautiful building. The food here is great! If this place had a larger selection of real ales, then I feel this place would be a real goldmine.I'd choose this place over the 'Queens Head' - which as nice as it looks is over priced. The Red Lion enjoys a prime position and feels very homely.

I know it's Penn but it is still over priced. I expect mushy peas to be included with fish and chips and not have to pay an extra £3.50 for them. The difference between the small roast and a full roast on this Sunday was marginal and we queried it. If this is the norm I'd go for a small portion and save £6.50! We were a largish group but the mains were not served at the same time which meant two of our group had finished before the rest had been served. The fried fish was good. The venison burger was also good but on the small side. The roasts were very average typical pub grub. Service was friendly and efficient. Would I go back - probably not unless I fancied a very good brownie!

I had the rib eye beef roast.(£14.50). I was asked if I wanted rare or medium and I said rare but the meat wasn't rare, ie it was the same colour throughout and was incredibly difficult to saw through in places. The Yorkshire pud was large, tasteless and hard rather than crisp and had no soft doughy part. The roast potatoes were large, and hardish with a leathery skin, whereas I understand a roast potato to be crisp on the outside and fluffy in the middle. Veg was fine. For pud we had ice cream, two scoops in a bowl with nothing else (how about a small wafer?) for £4.50. My chocolate ice cream was quite horrible, it had a powdery texture which left a rough residue on the spoon, it was pretty tasteless. The bar man apologised and took the cost off our bill. He said it had probably defrosted and froze again. Maybe it had but then why sell it? it didn't even look right and must have been obvious when scooped out.Yes the front of house staff were charming and the duck pond is lovely but I don't think that justifies selling a poor and expensive meal we were looking forward to. If this just sounds like I'm a winger then the pub further down the road is much better and we will be going there next time.

I have eaten here a few times over the years and it's always been an enjoyable experience and my last visit was no exception. The menu is basically a standard pub food menu: burgers, fish and chips, steak, pies, pizzas, etc. But it is all well cooked and good quality. There is usually a specials board that features more gastropub-style dishes and they are usually all excellent. If you don't want a full meal there is a selection of very good bar snacks that are generous portions. The pub has a traditional feel to it because it has not been modernised and so has a bit of old-world charm about it. The bar is in a good-sized room with several tables and some old curved benches by a fire, and there are a couple of rooms on either side of the main bar with more tables. There are usually 2-3 local beers on tap. There is a garden at the side of the pub and some benches at the front that face the pond and look out over the common, which makes this a lovely place to visit on a warm sunny day for a drink or a meal.

Amazing food. A great country pub. Friendly service. A big group of my friends came here for lunch after a long trek. It was perfect, the most amazing lamb I've had in years.

Where better to walk to after work on Fridays. Great local food and atmosphere. Where better to relax than by the log fire this winter xx

Wonderful location opposite the duck pond. They serve a good range of lunch, snacks and dinner options, as well as coffees. It's a real hub used by the local community - there's always people relaxing outside and/or chatting. Great atmosphere. There's a cat that seems to live there, who will come over for a stroke if it feels like it. Great place to relax with friends pr a book on a nice day.

As local pubs go, the Red Lion is a gem. It accepts what it is and does it all just about right. The beer is kept well (and regular shuffling of the ale deck keeps it interesting) and the food is of decent quality. Additionally the pricing is just about right.Does it have the glamour or history of the Royal Standard of England? No, but frankly, I don't care! This is a good old fashioned local, you should drink here.

Had the vegetarian roast dinner, which is just veg, potatoes, gravy and a Yorkshire pudding ...so no protein. it was a huge let down thanks to the vegetarian gravy, which had no taste. The carrots were more than Al dente and the celeriac mash was watery. As the saying goes...if you're going to do something then do it right. A slice of nut roast or a couple of veggie sausages and some onion gravy or tasty veg gravy (rather than brown water) and it would have been ok. As it was I managed three roast potatoes and a couple of carrots.

Beautiful setting on a gorgeous summer evening opposite the pond. Third time here and the food is consistent. Piping hot fish and chips and the onion ring, never tasted any like that before! Thoroughly recommend this pub for all round stuff. Great friendly staff Great tasty food

they tried to have a scaled down formula from the Royal Standard of England and make it more of a local pub - so a more limited menu and beer selection.can work but never feels like they want to provide a village service - instead a village pub, which might be fine for many but lacking for my tastes

Full of character and homely. Good range of drinks, plus coffees. Food is pretty tasty and coffees are good, all arrived promptly (have been twice). Lovely atmosphere across from the duck pond.I don't understand the complaints at all - it's an old building and is traditionally decorated with lots of wood. It is clean enough and there's plenty of room outside. It is not a sleek modern gastropub - I find it really refreshing!

Glad the U3a convenor chose this pub to have coffees and later lunch for our group of 15 or so. Coffee was drunk out side in the sun and was reasonably rapidly served. After our walk around Penn, ably led by Miles Green, we sat in the well used bar area.I enjoyed a Ceasar salad and was glad I chose the small portion, because it was more than ample. I washed it down with half a pint of local cider. Delicious. Followed by Eaton Mess. Very tasty.

We called for lunch here. A very pleasant village pub with all the atmosphere you would expect. The food was good, presented attractively and was brought in a timely manner. However two points spoilt what was otherwise a pleasant dining experience. Firstly, we asked for a brown baguette - not white which could not be done. I see no reason why we can't have non-white bead in this day and age - the supermarkets are full of it and it would require little or no extra effort to provide it as an option.. The second point was that they took my credit card for the duration of the meal. Not only did I find that offensive, I am sure somewhere that it was outlawed. This air of distrust somewhat spoilt the meal and I certainly would not go back there again until management sorted out this rather nasty attitude towards their customers.

Just got back from a meal with friends at the Red Lion. Fight nearly broke out as we arrived due to drunk wanting to play the badly out of tune piano that is set in a low ceiling area of the pub and echoes badly. All settled down with one side leaving, but pianist and his freinds become increasingly drunk though the evening and continued to bash away at the piano - deafening us until we asked a lady who assured us she was manager to stop them. At the same time, the drunken friends' two large dogs snarled and barked at each other. At the end of the evening - 8.45 we asked the "manager" to stop our drunken pianist ( who was encouraging a 12 year old to join in, to stop and complained about a stressful and uncomfortable evening. Her reply was that that was what the piano was for. Might expect that in Wycombe town centre pub, might even go for the experience, but not in Penn / Tyler's Green. Been going there for 2 years plus, won't be going back.

A welcoming pub, very welcome after a dog walk ! Staff friendly, has a lot of character in it. However have seen a few people say the food is hit and miss. Haven't eaten here before, but the drinks are good - choice and price wise.

I've been here a few times now, the staff are very friendly, it has such a local village pub feel where there's no set format, just order what and how you want it and it's ok. I feel so at home here, everyone's welcome. Lovely find.

This pub is my local and I'm keen to support it but my visit yesterday was uncomfortably cold and not conducive to sitting and eating a meal. Starting off like this makes me decidedly more critical of my experience and to say this pub is decoratively tired and in need of a thorough clean is absolutely not a lie. The rugs on the floor made me feel quite nauseous. That aside the staff are pleasant enough and the food is ok but it would seem that in the last couple of years some enthusiasm has been lost.

Thought we would have a change & visit the lion, nice & cosy while snow on the ground on a cold Sunday afternoon, walked in & noticed a chap eating his Sunday roast while wearing a bobble hat, scarf & a winter coat! Why on earth did they not think to light either fire?? Come on it only takes a bit of thought!

My wife and I have dined here 3 or 4 times over the last 6 months or so and always go away with the feeling that the whole place. Could do with brightening up in more ways than one! The menu itself isn't very imaginative and the dining atmosphere is subdued to say the least. Some of the dishes are appetising enough but like one or two other pubs in the village there is a distinct lack of flair apparent!

This is a fantastic character pub, utterly without pretention, and incredibly child friendly. I cannot fault the staff or food, it was all just brilliant. I’d definitely go back!

I could like this pub in terms of ambience but my steak pie with mashed potatoes and bubble and squeak was was presented like a 1950s school dinner. Thin boring gravy, bit of shredded cabbage for B and S and a rugby ball shaped lump of mashed. Was this to celebrate the hosting of the RWC? Cost £13.50 I recall. The fruit tart on the sweet board was not available. Don't know how some of these pubs have the nerve to bill anyone for this kind of food. When you have guests I do not like to complain but my faith in pub food is on the decline.

Three elderly gents arrived on Saturday at 1:40pm looking for a pint and a meal during the lunch break at a cricket match at Amersham CC. Only after ordering our drinks were we informed by the barman that food could not be served as they stopped serving at 2:00pm. Despite the pub being virtually empty, apparently food orders would take about an hour so he was not going to take any new orders despite the fact that technically they were still serving for another 20 minutes. We were very disappointed but we sat in an empty bar to drink our now irrelevant pints. I took a seat that gave me a view through the bar to where I could hear washing up being done in the kitchen at the rear. During the 15 minutes that we wasted in this pub, I am fairly sure that no food emerged from the kitchen for anyone in the garden at the rear. Just as we were about to leave, a gent (presumably a local) ordered a pint and one other drink together with a food order. Do not waste your time with a pub that simply can't be bothered to serve its customers. Judging by the recent comments on here about the poor quality food and its inflated prices, our party didn't miss anything by instead buying prepacked sandwiches from the local Tesco instead! A pub that can't be bothered to serve its guests is not fit for purpose. Now I understand why the bar was empty. AVOID

Went for a casual lunch after walking the dog, having moved to the area recently. We went in expecting to just have nibbles, but the menu sounded great so we decided to splash out a bit. What we received was very disappointing and definitely not worth what we paid for it. Service at the bar was very unfriendly to the point we felt the staff would have preferred us not to be there. Starters weren't bad, I had the chorizo scotch egg which tasted nice, even if the egg yolk was a bit gelatinous. My wife had the croquettes which were also tasty but a very small portion. Main course was very poor. I got the Pollo picante, which is advertised as half a chicken in a spicy marinade. The chicken was dry and the marinade was very bland - what flavour it did have was not spicy and not even very pleasant. The amount of chicken provided was also not great - half a chicken suggests at least two very large chunks of chicken, what I received were two meagre breasts which had dried out under the grill. The chips were also poor - they had an unpleasant floury aftertaste and weren't very crispy- I'd expect better in a pub geared towards food. My wife had the pasta calabrese al forno, which was also somewhat dry and the sauce tasted burnt. It had only a small amount of chicken and practically no chorizo. We had thought about pudding but decided not to in the end. We live locally and had thought this might be a good place to come with friends and family but might not bother, given the overpriced and mediocre food and unfriendly service.
