Called in on the off chance for a quick bite to eat. Very reasonably priced, tasty, home cooked food. Friendly barman and quaint old fashioned pub and dog friendly which is a must for us. Very cheap beer. Very good all round

Rude staff - incorrect signage and you couldn’t pay me to go back - manager disgusting attitude Our party of 13 came here for a Sunday dinner along with our dogs as it’s advertised as dogs welcome! We sat down to be told no dogs in a rude manager and they suggested the could cook them instead or we could eat in the rain! No apologies just sneering faces We a good send to be honest as the so called carvery was a hot plate! Disgusting! There is ever a sign on the door saying dogs friendly!

Booked a table at this village pub for Sunday lunch . On arrival instructed by the bar lady to go around the other side of the bar to go ahead with ordering our drinks and food , faced with our table which is a couch so low down on the floor we asked for a table we could sit at as my husband can’t get down so low to eat a meal . Response from the lady was “ well when you phoned to book you said a couch was suitable “ but as not being local we had no idea how low the seats were. We asked for a table to sit at to be told non available as they were all booked so we left . Bar woman was not very friendly (actually rude ), or accommodating an elderly person that wasn’t t able to sit so low on the floor . Whilst I understand they are busy but there were tables that were vacant and I’m sure they could have swapped our booking with someone more able to eat so low down . So we left and ate at The Travellers Rest restaurant next door who were very friendly , served a great Roast dinner at a great price and were happy to have us in their restaurant.

We were staying just up the road in the Love2Stay lodges and had a walk around. After wandering around with our dog we ventured into this fabulous pub/restaurant/hotel. I ordered the cheeseburger even though I really wanted the pork belly but never order it out anymore as it’s usually soggy and disappointing. Well…the husband ordered the pork belly and OH MY LORD! THE best I have EVER tasted. It came with cabbage covered in gravy and also cooked to perfection. My burger was lush and it was so thick I had to share it with the dog. The food was truly lovely and cooked fresh to order so don’t expect a five minute microwave ping wait, give it 20mins or so and you won’t be sorry.

I stayed at the Red Lion for a couple of nights, as I was fishing at Clywedog for 3 days. The rooms are spacious, spotlessly clean and very reasonably priced. The friendliness of the staff was second to none and they couldn't do enough for me. The food was delicious and the beer incredibly cheap. The pub itself is a bustling, locals pub, but there's no us and them vibe and people were very friendly. I highly recommend anyone to stay here.

Appearances can sometimes be deceptive - however, don’t be put off by the menu and whilst a little tired looking we thought it was a really nice place. Inside there are large sofas, it’s dog friendly and the food is very good value for money. A good pub to just relax in. Very typical pub food. We ordered the burger which was great and also the curry which was a good meal. Portion sizes were also very good. Would certainly go back when in the area again if we wanted a quick and relaxed meal. It’s very much a local pub but the people very very friendly.

We always make a point of calling in at the Red Lion, the Butty Bach beer is good and comparitably cheap compared with Berkshire! We sat in the lounge by the lovely ornate fireplace, and I ate a wholesome 3 courses, my wife had 2 courses and the whole bill came to £42.40. We had a super time. I'm not surprised that this hotel is popular with walkers. Plenty of parking at the rear. Can't wait to go back again.

Popped in for lunch, sat outside in the garden as managed to catch a very sunny afternoon. There was a very big menu, possibly too big. Had the chicken salad, thought I couldn't go wrong with that. The meal was OK, chicken not very tender. Had a portion of onion rings, home made and very crunchy but a bit on the greasy side. Service was good and the staff were very welcoming and friendly. What I saw of the interior, appeared clean and cosy. The outside area was spacious but it wasn't busy when we were there. Down side was that it is also the car park so had a delivery van pull right up to us and off load whilst we were eating.

The Red Lion is one of those old places brimming with character. We sat in the lounge, the seating in which is mostly deep leather settees with small tables located in between. It's a curious set up, but not in a negative way. The traditional bar service was most welcome - something that I have missed during the pandemic. The staff were very friendly and the food and drink highly recommended. I had the steak and ale pie, but don't forget to check out the specials board. We will definitely come again.

Absolutely great value for money. We stayed at The Red Lion for a 3 day fishing trip to the nearby Clywedog Reservoir. We paid £35 per night for bed and breakfast. I don’t know how they do it. Fantastic cooked breakfasts served by charming, friendly staff. We also had dinner each night. Again great value for money and ample portions. I can recommend the Red Lion burger and the side order of onions rings! Beer and lager reasonable priced and plenty of choice. The staff were so friendly throughout and the amount of effort put in to the Covid restrictions was a credit to them. They couldn’t have tried any harder to make the visit as safe as possible. It may have a 2 star rating but I would give it 5 star for service, cleanliness and value for money. We will most certainly book in again on any future trips to the area. We ate in the 'Red Lion' twice during our recent stay in Llanidloes. Immediate first impression in entering was that the pub was nothing out of the ordinary, but it seemed a busy, cheerful and friendly place, the staff were immediately welcoming and helpful, and the menu offered a wider range of options than the usual standard pub grub - though if standard pub grub's your preference, they've got that too. They have a separate restaurant area, but when we were there all the diners seemed to be eating in the lounge bar (the downside is easy chairs and low tables!) or in the pool bar with standard dining tables. We opted for the latter. When our meals came, they'd clearly been freshly cooked, the portions were very generous, and on both occasions everything was delicious. And we certainly had no complaints at all about the prices; the 'today's specials' board was particularly reasonable. We'd certainly patronize the 'Red Lion' again if we were in Llanidloes, and readily recommend it to anyone.

We booked a table in the restaurant at the Red Lion an evening meal for our group, arrived in plenty of time, bought drinks and went into the restaurant area at the appointed time. It was midweek, the pub was fairly empty and we were not surprised to find we were the only people in it. Twenty mins later the waitress apologised for being busy, brought one menu and said she would be back shortly. After another 20 mins, we tried to chase up the order process and found that people in the bar area who had arrived after us had already been served. This seemed odd to say the least and we asked whether they wanted us to order from the bar. The answer was "They were very busy - get to us when she could. Was that OK?" Ten minutes later, having been in the Red Lion for over an hour and not even able to order any food, half of our group gave up the unequal struggle and went down the road to another restaurant. My recommendation is that if you can't place a food order straight away, don't waste your time waiting at the Red Lion and go on somewhere else. Update: The other half of our group who held out (they had drinks to finish) reported that they ended up having to be quite pushy with bar staff to get an order taken. However food was OK, cheap and cheerful pub grub and quite good value, excepting the time and effort it took to place an order.

I prefer to see my meat, but the roast rump of lamb was slathered in a thick wine and redcurrant sauce; quite tasty though. The fresh vegetables were just enough for the three of us. My cheesecake with raspberry sauce and cream was nice, but the topping on the apple crumble the others had was substandard. The waitress was busy but efficient.

On arrival we were greeted by Steve who was very friendly & welcoming. Our rooms were clean & comfortable & the bathroom more than adequate, the shower had plenty of power & the water was always hot. The only thing missing in the bathroom was a towel rail as there was actually nowhere to put wet towels! We didn't eat in the restaurant in the evening, but had a very good breakfast each morning & we were given ample choice of cooked items. We would have liked more choice of fresh fruit/yogurt, but that's a minor issue. The bar was quite homely & the service was always good & staff very friendly with an excellent choice of real ales.

Four of us ate at the Red Lion on a weekday evening in the bar. The lamb shank was good, plenty of meat on the bone and the mint gravy excellent. The gammon also looked fine and the chips were excellent! The bar is a nice comfortable place with leather sofas in front of an old cooking range with lots of brass and copper pots etc. There was a jam session of local folky people happening and a good atmosphere.Accommodation is available and if we visit Llanidloes in the future I'll check out the Red Lion.

Was recommended this eatery and it was a lovely experience. Food variety was good and cost extremely reasonable. Staff were friendly and the cook used local food as far as possible. The only downside was the sofa which sank down quite a bit but hey when the food is tastey what does it matter !! Would recommend this pub for value for money and quality

Me and the wife visited here a few times during our week long stay nearby, mainly for the pool table and carling cider! From the off we were met by very friendly and chatty staff. They were helpful and nothing was too much trouble for them.I saw a lot of people ordering food and it seemed quite popular and we were only in the bar, the lounge was pretty full all the time aswell with those who wanted a quieter atmosphere! The food that was being served to the folk in the bar looked lovely, but having made reservations elsewhere we were unable to take up the taste test, but we do have another two days left here, so we might be able to squeeze a quick lunch in or something! Fingers crossed!I have no problem in recommending this pub/restaurant as a go to place when visiting Llanidloes! I have given this place a 4/5 purely because we haven't tried the food yet, but I will update this when we have, and give a full review of the dining experience. Many thanks for your hospitality!

I have visited the Red Lion many times in the last six years and have always enjoyed the experience, whether it's a pub lunch in the bar whilst walking the dog or the great value Sunday lunch carvery or relaxing in the lounge with a pint of Timothy Taylor ale.The staff have always been welcoming and I would highly recommended it, just don't expect posh.

Sunday carvery is a local legend round these parts. Sure, the food is never going to win any awards, but you really can't fault it for a fiver.I think they could probably do with re-arranging the servery area, as sometimes the queues can get very long - I've waited nearly half an hour in a queue of 20 once. Not usually that bad, but it's totally random, unless you pretty much arrive at 12pm. But as I said, it's a fiver and you get a choice of four meats, unlimited veg, and a really decent feed.

When we arrived it was quite late into the day. However, once we had paid for our Meals we pretty much had free reign. We just kind of helped ourselves. No one asked if we were ok or if there was any problems. The tables behind us hadn't been cleaned for a while and it wasn't the most pleasant of environments. The food however was good even though most was cold. For a fiver you can get well fed to be honest I would probably use again if in area.

We had this place recommended by locals for the Sunday lunch. We didn't book, however we were lucky enough to get a table. The Yorkshire puddings are a sight to behold! Quality food, well worth a visit.

This is what you would class as my local! Been drinking and eating here for years! The carvery on a Sunday shouldn't be missed and normally cures the hangover! The menu is classic pub food!! Just what I need after a long week at work!! And the big leather sofas in the lounge are so comfy! The staff are always fantastic! Really nice atmosphere!!

You can either pay £5 for a meal which is cold which you get yourself or more for a hot meal served at your table at other places. Basically, at the lion you serve yourself at a `canteen` and can stuff yourself as much as you like for £5. However, you have to carry your food and walk around until you find a table, and in this time your actually quite nice meal gets cold. The place is packed out so everyone feels on top of you and the whole experience doesn`t feel dignified. In my opinion, when you have a meal out it`s good to be served at a table, chill a bit with drinks before you eat and soak up the atmosphere.... There are plenty of places near where you pay a bit more but it`s worth it for the service at the table and hot food. Also, the decoration at the lion is very dowdy and it`s dark inside. I won`t be going there again. I thought after the meal, when I had stomach ache from cold food, I may as well have stayed at home.

Lounge bar equipped with easy chairs, original beams and large fireplace. Olde world charm very good beers and wines. Had rib eye steak from menu with a reasonable choice. Steak was cooked just right with more than enough chips side salad etc. Very reasonable prices.

Called in the Lion whilst on a day trip round mid Wales. Staff very welcoming and renovations are ongoing, the place isn't the same without the trademark Lion above the entrance porch so hopefully it will be back in its rightful place soon. The lady behind the bar said it would be. Had a meal off the bar menu Steak Pie and Chips, more than agreeable for the cost. Beer was in good condition too.

Firstly the decor of the place is very dated, but appealing to some obviously. I'm from out of the area so not sure if standards where I live are higher, but we had the sunday carvery and to be honest was quite shocked at the standard of the service of the carvery and surounding area. The meat offered was on a basic plate and the other 3 plates were empty so obviously I opted for the one meat offered (beef). The mashed potatoes were slopped into a container in front of you, the plates were all covered in other peoples food (as other customers have to lean across the unused plates to serve themselves - quite shocking!) My partner opted for the lamb (even though that plate was empty, he thought he'd be able to wait for some more to be served) but the girl serving actually served him a pile of stringy remaining fat... quite unbelievable. However what food we did manage to eat, was pleasantly cooked and filled us up after our long journey.

12 of us pre booked. Most of the starters were not available and to be honest my impression was the pate portion was small and was no different to that from a supermarket. The sirloin steak I asked for medium rare was over cooked and only a couple of the puddings were available. The waitress who was a young person tried her best but seemed to lack any support sometimes one plate would be served then 2 at a time. The only good point is the beer was cheap and looked after
