Y Gegin Fach in Powys

After visiting this place several times I overheard a conversation on my most recent visit which has led me to believe there are two menu's One for the tourists and one for the locals Same food different prices. I won't be visiting again

We had lunch twice at the café the week of our holiday from 23rd September 2023. We were very impressed and are happy to recommend it to other visitors to Machynlleth. The food is freshly cooked, so you may have to wait for a reasonable time. The portions are generous and we thought the food was of a high quality. There is plenty of choice on the menu. The service is efficient efficient and friendly. There is a good selection of cakes too.

Hair in breakfast again! Thought it was a one off last time so gave it a go and found one again. Kitchen or chef can’t be very hygienic if this is happening. Makes my stomach turn 🤮

My family of 5 had breakfast here twice during our holiday. The food was delicious, the staff are all so friendly and accommodating. Even our dog was welcome! Such an amazing cafe, thank you!

I checked the main road for a cafe that did tea and cake and that a single person with a dog could sit inside (not a fan of sitting on pavement with traffic up and down). Looked clean and friendly. Served by a very pleaseant individual with tea in a pot that held 2 cups and with hot water and milk and offered sugar that I was happy to decline - I do hate it when sugar packets are on saucer as I feel they may simply be thrown away if unused. I also bought a piece of cake. The price for the tea and cake was £4.20 which I thought was very reasonable. Cake was tasty and not just victoria sponge Staff all seemed friendly and treated customers with respect. Would have been happy to go again and try a meal another time.

Normally stop at another cafe when passing through Machynlleth but after staff were rude and uninviting we decided to try here. So glad we did, friendly staff, very attentive, food was excellent best jacket potatoes I've had in ages and the breakfast bap was crammed full. Will definitely be my new go to cafe whenever I pass through Machynlleth from now on. Diolch yn Fawr

Located on the high street, Y Gegin Fach is a small dog friendly café serving breakfasts, lunches, drinks and cakes. The coffee and cakes were particularly good. Cakes available to take away. Ice creams for dogs available. Great friendly service. Clean. Recommend.

Great cake selection. Lemon drizzle excellent, orange and chocolate nice, maybe could have been a little more orangey! Coffee very good.

Lovely place & thank goodness for it as there was hardly anything else open !

Breakfast was really nice(taste), although we waited a long time for our food. When it arrived it was luke warm. I was only offered one hash brown for the two eggs I didn't want. Also, there doesn't seem to be much of a difference in size between the large coked breakfast and the small. But there is a price difference.

A lovely friendly Welsh welcome awaits you. Our dogs loved it in here as did their human friends. Cracking jacket potato and good tea. Lovely choice of cakes too, 3 GF Ones. Some dog ice cream for Duncan and Dora. Definitely return

We have been here many times previously, so stopped off for tea and cake afternoon on Saturday 9 July 2022 on our journey further north. Great selection of food and drinks and super friendly people. Highly recommended and we will be back again. Thank you all so much.

Very nice coffee and cake, good sturdy seating, staff friendly but the sandwich and chips we had was pretty expensive and average at best. 4 stars for the coffee and cake though.

A wonderful little place for Breakfast. The ladies (and gent!) At Y Gegin Fach welcomed us for a wonderful breakfast. Cooked Breakfasts came with toast and tea/coffee as part of the price, we went for the typical, eggs bacon and sausages breakfast which was lovely! If you’re there for breakfast they have wide menu available for breakfast, lunch and dinners too inclusive of smoothies, milkshakes, iced coffees and naughty treats including some traditional Welsh bakes which we purchased to take home with us! Reasonably priced and great food to suit.

By far the best breakfast I've had in a long long time. Pleasant friendly staff and a nice atmosphere. Amazing cake and very reasonable. I'll go back every week if I could.

The café was very busy when I called and some customers had to be turned away, so they seem to have a good regular trade. The staff didn't appear to be very happy in their work but we need to remember that they are working under most demanding circumstances with the current pandemic rules and restrictions. My Cappuccino coffee was lovely but the sandwich was average, possibly because the bacon appeared to have been pre cooked and kept hot or reheated.

The staff were indifferent, the customer service could be greatly improved. All food and drink is served in/on single used, disposable containers. The tea was milky hot water and not recognisable as tea.

Having found a cafe still open at the end of the day and with outdoor seating we thought we’d done well, but the experience was marred by the very indifferent customer service. I stood at the counter for some time and was completely ignored by the staff. True they were busy preparing orders and taking them to customers, but it wouldn’t have hurt to acknowledge my presence and to say something like ‘sorry to keep you waiting, I’ll be with you in a minute’ . Eventually I just had to interrupt one of the staff who was ignoring me and asked to place an order. They may have been tired at the end of the day, but the customer expects to be treated well whenever, after all we are paying their salaries.

Lovely visit here on a rainy Sunday morning. The staff were so accommodating of our quite large family group. We had three vegans in our party and they were delighted with the vegan breakfast and bap on offer as well as the 4 delicious vegan cake options which we got to takeaway. Really great service and experience.

Stopped for breakfast, after a short wait we were told there would be a delay, which when I asked how long was told 20 mins. 40 mins later still no breakfast, so I went in and asked to cancel the order as we had parked in a zone which allowed 1 hr only. The person serving was decidedly rude and brusquely told me " it's coming out now"...which wasn't true but they clearly were not going to cancel/ refund so I waited. when it did arrive the egg and bacon were overcooked ( quite an achievement on a late delivery) and the sausage was the lowest quality. A great shame that the only notable thing about this place is how bad it is. Avoid.

Popped here for a spot of lunch whilst in the area. Really good covid compliance - was made to feel very safe whilst sat inside. Food was really tasty, will definitely be back next time we are in Machynlleth!

I was very upset at the quality of food and attitude in the place, my nan told the owner the cake was dry and bland and the owner snatched the plate away, she was very rude so I didn't complain about my food what really was poor, won't be returning

Called in here on a wet September lunchtime.What a find !.A really welcoming little coffee shop serving delicious cakes and lunches.I opted for the creamy garlic mushrooms on ciabatta bread,and they were beautiful and plentiful.Great food friendly fast service..THANK You x

This is my go to lunch stop when travelling through Machynlleth and now dogs are welcome too.Their food is extremely good value with plenty of choice and the staff are welcoming and polite even when obviously very busy.. I have brought my young grandchildren several times and have been provided with a children's menu and the kids were offered colouring and puzzle books to occupy them while waiting for food, I have even seen the staff offering to nurse a small baby so the parents could eat in peace.The only reason I have not awarded them five stars is that there is sometimes a bit of a wait for the food to be served but it is worth the wait as it comes freshly cooked and piping hot.

Certainly not child friendly. Rather than respectfully asking the families with children if they could lower the volume the manager shrieked across the cafe for quite. It really upset our 6 year old and there was an uncomfortable atmosphere in the cafe from then on.

We found this very busy place and as soon as we walked in a couple moved table with the help of the waitress so we could get in. Very friendly. There were bikers, mums and dads, children, older folk and it was great. There are a few outside tables (order at the counter). We had the all day breakfast and ham, chips, egg, peas. Breakfast was fabulous. Well cooked and tasty (loved the black pudding). Very pleased to have found this treasure and will be back when we pass by again. The waitress was unflappable despite being very busy.

Visited this lovely little café with the wife and kids on a market day. We arrived starving and left full! The menu had suitable options from sandwiches to hot food, I opted for the lasagne while my wife and kids had the lamb and beef burgers from the special board. We were shocked by the portion sizes as the prices are cheap. Beautiful presentation to the food! Staff were extremely kind and helpful and attended to our needs even though the café was extremely busy. Free WiFi, and a spotless toilet is definitely always a bonus! We couldn’t leave without trying the cakes so we decided to choose some to takeaway to have later on in the day. My children had a slice of creme egg Easter cake, my wife had the rocky road and I had the blueberry tart, all of which were homemade and delicious! Would definitely recommend and I hope to be visiting again soon.

We had been told about Y Gegin Fach and we were certainly not disappointed. A central location in the town, excellent food and service and at a very reasonable price. A homely Welsh atmosphere - llawer iawn o ddiolch am bryd a gwasanaeth gwych.

visited here after trying another place that wasn't actually in town and staff were helpful and chatty. food average, jacket potatoes and sandwiches that sort of thing but nice coffee and cakes. would return.

Lovely coffee and food as we were visiting the area. We were able to sit outside with our dogs who were given some treats and water by the really friendly and helpful staff. Will certainly call there again as we pass through heading for the west wales coast

Was just walking by and thank god we did. Lovely friendly service. Wonderful food and a great atmosphere. If you’re coming to this town make a point of popping in. The selection of cakes are marvellous. Great fresh food and a warm welsh welcome.

We had a great lunch here lovely jacket potatoes and panini. Nice clean, friendly staff. Fab coleslaw! Definitely recommend a visit, thru had lots of homemade cakes on offer to be we were stuffed from the lunch.

One of many cafes on the high street so competition is high. Essentially this. Is coffee, tea breakfast and cakes cafe. Slightly dated uninspired decor. Good selection of cakes, sandwiches, panini and cod and chips. Popular with cyclists, walkers and other tourists. For me nothing special but does meet needs. Lack of Welsh specialities except Welsh Cheddar (an English name) and Welsh tea (not grown in Wales).

We stopped here for a quick lunch whilst on holiday and enjoyed our food. The staff were very friendly and we were served quickly.

We work around Mach and area a lot and always have a breakfast or lunch where we work.

Delicious lunch and great value. Lots of choice. We had filled soft rolls which came with salad and coleslaw. Our dog was given treats and fresh water. Very friendly staff. Highly recommended.

We have stopped trying other local cafes for breakfast as this one is by far the best and always full of locals which is another indicator that it is the best. Portion size is good, food is well cooked and never greasy and the veg breakfast has really tasty vege sausages plus 2 slices of toast & tea or coffee included. It does get busy so we always try to get there soon after they open at 9am. They also do a range of snacks and light lunches as well as a daily specials board. Cakes look delicious but we have not yet tried them. We have been 4 times in the last few months and are never disappointed.

My wife, son and I popped into this cafe on market day but were still able to get a table.

Hubby and I decided to have our lunch here on a recent sunny Saturday. We sat outside underneath the parasol. You have to order at the counter. He chose cold ham/egg/chips/peas. I opted for beef lasagne and salad. We also had a pot of tea. The bill came to £18.20. We had to pay cash because they have no card machine (there is an ATM in the nearby Spar Shop).

Simply delicious Barabrith was amazing, Eccles cakes were beautifully risen, crisp and flavoursome. You cannot beat good home made produce. A terrific discovery .

Called into this lovely coffee shop on the off chance what a delight the coffee and tea was the home make cakes were to die for.anyone in the area should make this a must for cooked foods and delicious cakes although we were a little late getting there we were made really welcome. So if you are a local or visitors you couldn't go wrong with this place to eat

Called in for coffee and snack as a break from a long hot journey. Excellent coffee and lovely selection of cakes spotlessly clean and very pleasant staff. Do some hot meals sandwiches etc which also looked very good.

From the weather outside to the staff inside all was bright and cheering. Plenty of choices to eat and the things we had were very tasty and nicely priced to boot.

We called in and had soup and a crusty roll for lunch, backed up by 2 cappuccinos. Lovely flavour to the soup and the crusty roll was spot on. Very friendly service from the young lady - we will call again when in the area!

I've eaten at Y Gegin Fach on numerous occasions now. Always warmly welcomed by the team. Y Gegin Fach is clean, plainly but nicely decorated with plenty of tables yet it never feels cramped indoors and there are tables outside as well. [Wednesday, Market Day - Y Gegin Fach will be very busy indeed so plan your visit carefully.] I enjoyed the full breakfast so much, I took my husband to this cafe when he visited Mach and he was not disappointed. Bara Brith, Coronation Chicken or Tuna in jacket potato or brown bread bap, soup and coffee. All delicious [especially the Bara Brith] and very reasonably priced. Never paid over £8.45 and that was for two breakfasts with hot drinks. Very relaxing in comfortable atmosphere with great food and coffee.

I've eaten here twice and both meals were equally as good. The specials are amazing and very good value - this week I had minted lamb burger with salad, onion rings, coleslaw and sweet potato chips for just over £6. So tasty. I'd have loved a cake afterwards, but too full to eat anymore. Never fear, I'm definitely going back.

Out on a coach day excursion our lunch stop was in Machynlleth, Powys. Never having been here before and being ravenous we walked along the main street looking for somewhere that beckoned us in, which was what Y Gegin Fach did. Considering it was slightly later than normally considered lunchtime there were plenty of diners, always a good sign. The cafe is small with approximately eight or nine tables so I would imagine there would be a wait to secure one at busy times. My husband and I both chose ham, egg, chips and peas, bread and butter for one, a pot of tea and a can of Tango orange. When the meals arrived we couldn't believe the size of the portions, they were enormous! We both tucked in and the food was delicious, fresh and well-cooked and the small amount I couldn't manage was soon polished off by my husband. Unfortunately, we were too full to sample the lovely cakes on display in the cabinet but some of the other diners appeared to be enjoying theirs. The staff were very pleasant and nothing was too much trouble for them. We considered ourselves very lucky to have chosen this establishment and will definitely eat there again if we visit Machynlleth in the future.

Popped in for coffee and couldn't resist the banoffi cheesecake. Both were lovely and will be sure to go back.. Seemed popular with locals which is always a good sign.

Mi prometida y yo metimos en, 15 minutos antes de la hora de cierre en una BH Lunes. Después de celebrar la puerta del propietario (presunta) mientras él llevaba comida a una mesa y luego abrir y sosteniendo abierta de nuevo en su regreso, no había siquiera un gracias o acuse! Conseguimos "sólo bebidas y pasteles". No hace falta decir que no y dar nuestro comercio. Al hombre fuertemente a sudar, los días se han ido de poder escapar con un pobre servicio al cliente - el único mérito de su negocio es la chica sonriente detrás del mostrador.

We ordered homemade tomato soup, which was very nice, as was the warm bread that accompanied it. We returned later with friends to indulge in coffee and cake. The lemon meringue was lovely, but the carrot cake didn't go down so well. Our friends had panini's, which they enjoyed I think.

Popped in by chance for a snack. Very impressed with the Welsh Rarebit. Nice and clean with a good array of snacks. Worth a visit when you are passing.

This little cafe was lovely. It was a busy Saturday lunchtime and obviously popular with locals. We liked the mix of age groups.The two young girls running it were unbelievably efficient. The food was excellent value for money. I had a chicken burger which came with onion rings, coleslaw and salad at under £6. Well done!

Called in bank holiday Monday for lunch. 6 year old daughter had to pop to the loo straight away so our order was taken a couple of minutes behind the group that came in after us - they refused to do a kid's portion of fish and chips (no more cooking so in fact anything from the kids menu) but it turned out that the group previously mentioned had them - really poor form not to just throw a few extra in. We were more than an hour ahead of closing time but they clearly just wanted to go home. The kids ended up with massive adult rolls, most of which was wasted (we ordered kids' portions but they were served and charged as adults). My lemon chicken panini came smeared in cranberry sauce from my husband's Brie panini - not ideal to have a vegetarian meal in contact with a meat dish. Cakes / drinks were OK. Won't be calling again.

We visited this charming village on the way to Beddgelert to find that it was market day. The whole street was buzzing and we had a very nice cup of coffee in this coffee shop. It's a pity we weren't hungry because the portions of the cakes and the food that was served were enormous. It is a family-run business and they were all very friendly. Pleased we stopped here.

Stopped of for breakfast this morning and we were not disappointed. Poached eggs on toast with sausage's and a small fried breakfast. Both meals kept is going all day

Looks OK from the outside, and is clean and tidy inside. However, the service was a tad slow. The coffee could have been stronger - too much water added to the brew I suspect. The real stinger was the charge of 25p per cup for a dash of cold milk. This is an outrageous charge. My advice is to shop around as Machynlleth has some great coffee houses that do NOT charge extra for a dash of milk.

We visit whenever we come to Machynlleth on our weekends away to the area ,and look forward to some good fresh home cooked food. I've never had a bad experience here,for full meals or drinks and snacks, it feels like your friends dining room, always a friendly welcome,usually busy and has the air of cosy place to stop and spend some time chatting with other customers, eating great food and relaxing in general. My children love choosing from the varied menu offering freshly cooked food- for a taste of Wales you can't beat their " Welsh rarebit " - truly divine! The breakfasts are filling and just the thing to start the day well . Proper Welsh welcome too! Keep up the great work !

We stopped here for a warm cup of tea during the horrible rain. Staff were lovely and food/coffee was quick. Didn't eat here (only had teacakes) but the menu looks really good too.
