looks can be deceiving We popped in for an impromptu lunch whilst travelling north. Whilst the decoration may need updating, it is extremely clean (excellent) 6 of us really challenged the menu (which was huge, probably too big) everything was fresh, hot and very very good. Anyone thinking of heading in for food, head in....very good and great value for money)

As a regular i can vouch your establishment is amazing for fantastic friendly staff who are always friendly and welcoming, great beer and food cooked to order fresh with a 20 minute + waiting time depending on how many tables you have in. I heard someone said the gammon didn't taste like gammon? The steak is sometimes fatty but obviously you don't butcher the cow so not you fault! Then the problem with the cafe and indian customers parking on your carpark which is a great shame for your customers to experience the fantastic food and hospitality from the Red Hart. Amazing team, well done to all x

We used the Red Hart at Blythe for my Mum's wake after her funeral at Barnby Moor Crematorium. We were very satisfied with Paul and his staff and the hospitality provided. All guests were very impressed. We, as a family decided to return at some point to dine there and both me and my Dad went there for lunch this afternoon. We thoroughly enjoyed the meal we had. The food was homemade and extremely tasty and good value. We will be going back with the rest of the family very soon and would thoroughly recommend Paul's food.

Staying in Blyth for New Year we wanted to find a dog friendly pub to eat on New Years Eve Eve. We couldn’t have wished for a better place to dine and spend our evening. Sam who runs the pub is the most amazing host. So friendly and welcoming, she’s the heartbeat of the pub and makes you feel at home. I can’t recommend The Red Hart highly enough. Great food, great location, dog friendly and just the best host you could wish for. Thank you Sam.

After driving up from Buckinghamshire to Retford for the day, we were recommended to have lunch at the Red Hart hotel. We drove straight there without thinking to check the website, and went in and were seated. We were served drinks and asked for menus to be told they were only serving food after 5pm. The chef was so helpful and even offered to call another Pub to see if they had a table for us! A few minutes later he comes back and said that he has spoken to the owners, and has decided fo open the kitchen early (about 1pm) as we had been recommend to eat there - he didn’t want us to have to go somewhere else. The food was delicious, and the lady serving us was so attentive and friendly. If we were local it would be a restaurant we would go to regularly! Definitely worth a visit!

From our arrival for a pre booked table the evening before, we were greeted with there is no booking in the book, from one of the girls serving, note Jill was not here tonight. The girl who should have booked it was not working Friday night, so could not be quizzed. We did see another table that was free and asked if we could take it, so told yes. We ordered some drinks and took some menus to peruse and after a while I had to ask for someone to take our order. We were told that some one would come when they had finished serving other customers there meals. Starters and mains ordered for the five of us,still no one came with the cutlery, so I went to get some,as the starters came, all very good, every one enjoyed them, as is the usual standards here. We waited a while for the starters to be cleared then waited and was about to go and ask if there was a problem, when at 21:30 for our mains to arrive much too long from arriving at 20:00. Then after eating our mains it was really too late to concider any deserts.Once again the food quality was very good and all enjoyed their meals. Asked when we came to pay if everything was alright we said it was not, we thought waiting for one and a half hours was way too long. No apologies given. We noticed that the kitchen seemed to be light on staff this night, also the girls serving seemed much too pre occupied with their phones than on customer service. Jill was not in attendance this evening, as we have noticed previously standards do seem to drop when she is not there. This is real shame as this evening was booked on our recommendation and fell short on the experience we were expecting. Hence our friends do not wish pay again for a similar experience. If there was an underlying issue, nothing was explained and no apologies given. Come on Jill we know you are capable of maintaining the high standards we have come to know.

We visited the Red Hart for a birthday meal last night and had a lovely evening. We are a couple of groups of actors away with work staying locally and one of us had a birthday. This was our second time visiting the pub as we happened upon it two years ago and remembered that the food was decent and the staff had been friendly and not much has changed! The two ladies serving were really friendly, as were the kitchen staff. I’d brought a homemade cake with me and they helped me plate it etc and nothing was too much trouble. One of our party is vegan and they were very accommodating and made her a vegan Thai curry. Burgers were lovely too! Thanks very much again Perhaps be back the next time we work in the area!

Booked here for Sunday lunch, what a disappointment. Plated dinner came out from the kitchen and it appeared to be out of a microwave. The beef was dried up and shrivelled - totally inedible. Veg was red cabbage in its former life, the Manager said it was roasted not boiled to death - maybe the first time round before the microwave!! Yorkshire pudding was over cooked on the outside and raw in the middle. The worst dinner I have ever seen on a plate, for sale. Couple sat in restaurant said they had won the meal in a raffle - in her words it was the booby prize.

My daughter in law’s first outing after giving birth and we were so looking forward to it! It was such a disappointment as we were served inedible beef - apparently ‘warmed up in the oven without gravy’ was the excuse. Shouldn’t freshly carved be the benchmark? Appalling - we complained and two meals were knocked off the bill. We chose to return to the Red Hart as we have had great meals a couple of times. To be fair the pie and braised steak was average and all right and fish and chips described as good. Shame my daughter in law describe her meal as the worst Sunday dinner she had ever had! She deserved better and it ruined our day out. We won’t be back.

The Red Hart hosted my mum’s 70th birthday meal this weekend and we could not have asked for better service. Prior to the event the staff were most willing to assist in decorating our allocated space and nothing seemed to be too much trouble. We had secured a separate area of the bar (which is up a couple of steps and seats up to 15) and this created a great ‘private party’ atmosphere for our group.

Mashed and roast potatoes and lovely gravy. Prosecco was on offer at £10 a bottle so our party of 5 had two bottles. the food arrived all at the same time piping hot and the hostess was lovely. My grandfather and I stopped in here when travelling from Yorkshire to Leicestershire. It's a stone's throw off the A1 (accessible off both north and southbound carriageways) and has plenty of free parking at the rear. We'd booked a table for two an hour earlier, and arrived to find the table set and reserved as expected. The staff were instantly warm and welcoming and were very down to earth - professional and not at all pretentious. After sampling a pale ale at the bar, we sat down to find the menu contained a wide range of options to suit all tastes, including several delicious-sounding veggie options! Steaks of numerous weights are available, and the price structure for two and three courses was very competitive. We were assured the food was freshly prepared on the premises, and my grandfather opted for the fish medley (served with vegetables) and I picked the 6oz burger with homemade chips, coleslaw and side salad. The food was served swiftly and the portion sizes were excellent. Speaking personally, the burger was flavoursome and juicy, exactly as it should have been! The overall top-notch quality and price of the mains led us to the dessert board, where I opted for the homemade sticky toffee pudding (with custard) and my grandfather had the homemade lemon cheesecake. Both were generously sized and absolutely delicious - I've uploaded some photographs to prove it! The bill was served with mints (a lovely traditional touch) and we paid £30 for two 2-course meals, a pint of Guinness and a pint of pale ale. We walked out extremely pleased that we'd taken the time to choose the place! Considering you can easily spend over £45 at a well-known pizza franchise on a chemically-lacerated meal for two, the Red Hart was a local bargain. Regardless of whether you're after a drop-in lunch or a dinner for two as a treat, give this place a whirl! I guarantee I'll be back, and I live in Melton Mowbray! Thank you to the staff and landlady for such a pleasant and traditional pub dining experience. It was fab!

The North Nottinghamshire village of Blyth boasts several pubs; more than you would expect for a place this size, perhaps reflecting the fact that it was a more important village in times past. The Red Hart is a former coaching inn, located right in the centre of the village, and the best of the pubs there. The public bar is a fairly basic affair with TVs showing sport whilst the lounge is set out primarily for dining, with white tablecloths on all tables. The extensive food menu has something for everyone and is very reasonably priced, with many main courses under £10, and there are 2-for-1 deals and 2 and 3 course deals available on certain days and times. There is also a range of sandwich platters. I enjoyed Liver & Bacon sauté on bubble & squeak mash, accompanied with a good dish of fresh vegetables, for just £8.95. Three handpumps offer two decent local ales - the Pheasantry Spring Ale when I visited went down nicely - plus the ubiquitous Doom Bar. Staff are pleasant and friendly.

Came here for stepmum's 53rd this weekend for the first time. She said this place was notorious for long waits but I wasn't prepared for the over 45 minute wait for starters with a further 45 or so for main meals. Don't get me wrong, the quality of the food was quite high, mine personally not so much but others I tried were nice and everyone seemed relatively pleased. The place it's self was quite quirky; with Himalayan lamps being a thing of mine. But overall it was your typical, aged village pub with flimsy, uncomfortable chairs and an, in general, bygone atmosphere. Service was relatively friendly, especially to the girl who had lost her voice but continued to work hard - she had our sympathy. I wouldn't recommend the place but it's a reasonable last resort if needs be.

Visited last Sunday very busy which was a good sign. Ordered our mains and side of a Yorkshire pudding for my granddaughter. After about 15 minuets of waiting for our mains, we asked the young girl behind the bar if we could have the Yorkshire pud now as the little one was hungry. She said she would go ask the chef, I presumed she would bring one out so followed her to the kitchen door entrance. This is when I heard the chef complaining about there being orders before ours and about having no manners. He sounded very angry!! From the ones on the hot plate outside they are pre-made!! She returned and said that one would be with us shortly. The mains were ok nothing special and the Yorkshire puddings a little burnt.

Friday evening 24 November five of us went to the Red Hart, Blyth for a get together. What a hugh disappointment it was. From the start we had to wait a long while for our orders to be taken then waited (approx 1 hour for the food to arrive). Two of the meals were roast port (and looked very dry) and came without vegetables, when asked about the vegetables the male member of staff said they didn't come with vegetables but he would check and the meals were also cold and had to be sent back, the vegetables arrived in a bowl minus the meals. One meal was steak which wasn't cooked correctly also went back. After what seemed a lifetime of waiting the meals that were sent back hadn't arrived so we asked for the manager and told that they were not in. We didn't pay for the meals sent back and left totally disillusioned. Needless to say we will not be returning.

The pub is on corner of a road junction in Blyth with a small carpark to rear of the Red Hart off the Retford Road (A634). The car park seems to have about 20 spaces. We entered through the rear doors from the car park and we went past an empty dining room , via the drinkers bar into the lounge bar. We were welcomed into the dining area of the lounge and enquired about a dark beer . Called into the Red Hart with a group of work colleagues on a night out prior to eating out nearby. Found the place to be quite run down but that doesn't usually bother us. The drinks were quite pricey for simple pints but seeing as we were out in the sticks I have come to expect that. The reason for the poor review and the reason I will not return was basically the attitude of the bar staff and the locals which was just plain rude and downright aggressive. I got the feeling that his pub was a local place for local people akin to Royston Vasey from the League of Gentlemen! For starters whilst buying the first round I politely asked the barman if there was a cash machine nearby. His initial response was a loudly barked aggressive "WHAT?" accompanied by a look on his face that made me wonder whether one of the local dogs had rubbed some of their mess under his nose. At the second time of asking I was abruptly informed there was one nearby followed up by "WHY DO YOU WANT TO KNOW?" which I thought would have been bleedin' obvious myself. Not gonna trouble MENSA anytime soon that chap I tell thi.....This was quickly followed by me, initially politely, asking a local if if could get past him as his not inconsiderable bulk was blocking the door and I wanted to get out to use the aforementioned cash point. The response to this was another 'dog mess under the nose' look that made me wonder if I had accidentally asked him if I could court his favourite sheep for the evening instead. One round was enough and we quickly got out of there. The Slaughtered Lamb in American Werewolf provided a warmer welcome than this place! We'll leave the locals to their own devices in future I think.

A rarity for Blythe, we sat out in the garden, which in the afternoon catches the sun. Excellent value as a small fish and chips and mushy peas is really big enough for lunch (or dinner) and the braised steak is the business. The barman was impressive as he a) knew the menu inside out and answered all queries b) was quite happy to serve the food wherever we sat c) was very welcoming as well as professional. We all enjoyed the food and thought it excellent value. The Salamander beer was worth a visit on its own.

I'm a local and me and my young family have visited for Sunday dinners several times as they've got it right, the vegetables are cooked to order so they are flavourful and the meat is moist and tasty. we've also been on weekdays. Food has always been of a very good standard every time. We've used the upstairs function room for a birthday party and had a hot buffet which was organised by Gill and Paul and was very yummy. I also like the menu its clear and concise. I love how they have guest beer on tap and regularly change them and i think this sets it apart from other pubs.Paul and Gill have good taste and have decorated it traditionally to complement the age of the building which gives a friendly atmosphere. Plus they are family friendly and have a baby change area in the female toilet.

Went shooting locally in Blyth, and asked for their recommendation for a local lunch. Immediately reply was the Red Hart, no quibble. Was getting late for Sunday lunch, after 2pm so thought we might struggle but found pub easily. Old traditional pub, small rooms. Shown to available table and ordered more or less immediately. Plenty of staff waiting on and clearing tables. Ordered two roasts and a chicken in mushroom sauce dish. Was quite a wait for mains to come out but not a problem, when they did it was worth the wait. Plenty of good quality meat, fresh veg and excellent gravy! So delicious we decided to try a pud. Two Bakewell tarts and a choc pud & custard. All lovely. Would definitely visit again if in the area. I think the previous reviewer must have gone to a different pub. It's a pub, a real pub. No airs n graces, but great fresh food and very friendly staff. Don't see any problem.

Passing through Blyth and called in here for a drink and something to eat, really should have kept going. Its been a long time since I have seen a pub as tatty as this one, I didn't think they still existed in this day and age. It really does need a good clean and tidy up. If you like sticking to the carpet when you walk then give it a try. Really didn't want to but as we were already inside felt obliged to order. Food was not great or even good to be honest, service was very slow and it felt like we were bothering them by being there. Hardly anyone else in the place so not because they were busy. Quite a bit of bad language and swearing from the bar area. I know it's a grown up place but am glad we didn't have children with us. We had food and left never to return. I am not posh or choosy but my advice is that if you are going to run a public house make it inviting and clean at least.

We use the Red Hart on a regular basis it's always very welcoming from the landlord, staff, and regulars alike, the beers are always well kept and the food is always spot on which you want in your local village pub,Gill and Paul always go the extra yard whether it's Xmas, Halloween, Or just a regulars birthday, And are willing to cater and host pretty much any event, I've never heard anyone have a bad word to say about this lovely little village pub.

Food was great but service was shocking. The wait time between courses was ridiculas Took so long we all nearly fell to sleep, was also very cold no heating had to close the window blinds to stop the draughts. Will definitely not be recommending or going back which is unfortunate as the food was really nice.

Called in for lunch and ordered wine. No Shiraz by the glass so husband disappointed. I had Chardonnay and it was not chilled so I was disappointed! We were given menus and order would betaken at the table . Other customers arrived and placed their order so Iwent back to the bar and ordered our food.My Lasagne was tasty, too much cheese covering the beef flavour.Husbands Beef Pie was a hit and we had no troubleclearing our plates.First visit. Interesting place, but lacking friendly service and customer care.

The food and service here is so good it makes you want to return. The menu and specials give you quite a good choice. I had mussels and they were very tasty and got a good portion and that was the same with the other starters that hubby and friends had. The main course was served and was to a very high standard. Will we be coming back? The answer is yes. Give this place a try, you will be like us and returning

Recently made use of Blyth Services at Junction 34 on A1M. Needed to revisit area so looked at Blyth, 2 minutes from Motorway. Big choice of places to eat. Chose this on on basis of menu. Not disappointed with food or service both of which were excellent. Premises a bit tired but that would not stop me from going back. Avoid the services, travel 2 minutes from motorway and give places like this your custom. In the case of the food at the Red Hart you would not be disappointedf published menu

Stopped off for a rest and a drink. Decided to stop for a bite to eat after smelling some lovely aromas. The barman couldn't have been more helpful. Menu varied. Chose the baguette with Stilton and bacon. (Choice of brown or white bread offered). It came with a side order of home made chips!! Side salad and crisps. Was absolutely delicious. My partner chose the spicy chicken baguette which was equally nice. Staff attentive and polite. Will definitely go again. Very reasonably priced and good amounts of food well presented

went for evening meal but hadn't booked. Given a table in the dining area which was Ok but lacked the atmosphere of the lounge. Lounge area fully booked which was good and proved we had made a good choice of venue. Bar area, small and heaving with people trying to order drinks or announce their arrival or pay for their meals. Service was very slow with what appeared to be inexperienced staff. Collected our own menus and drinks and went to dining room where our choices of food was quickly taken. The meals were good and served with fresh vegetables which was a refreshing bonus. Waiter was attentive and friendly. Food and drinks prices reasonable too. Had to venture back to the bar area top settle our bill ....... oh dear ! customers were 3 deep and all waiting to be attended to. Eventually managed to pay but the wait and frustrated atmosphere spoilt our visit. We will visit again but not on a Friday evening.

Went with a party yesterday, I must have chosen the wrong dish! Everyone else in the party said they enjoyed their food. I on the other hand was very disappointed. The pasta was cooked well and was supposed to be in a creamy white wine sauce but it was just greasy and pretty tasteless. I did ask the chap who took the initial order for the sauce to be on the side in a jug, so I could regulate how much sauce went over the dish but that didnt happen. The salmon and asparagus pieces were so small and over cooked and the salmon/aparagus ratio to pasta was miniscule. I could have done better myself! Think they need to rethink this dish - I left more than half, could not stomach it, even offered around the table but no takers. I thought a piece of salmon would arrive on some pasta (with a little smoked salmon mixed in) with aparagus spears and parmesan shavings over the top...it didnt. At £7.95 not good value for money, they spoilt what could have been a good dish.

We have visited tonight specifically for food. We had a large table of 10 adults, 2 under 5s. Reception was nice and welcoming. Drinks were reasonably priced with a good variety. We had pre ordered our food which helped both staff and ourselves to be served more swiftly. I would recommend if you have young children and want to eat soon after sitting. It saves a lot of hassle. The staff were helpful and friendly when serving us and very accommodating. The food was absolutely delicious and I couldn't fault it. The black pudding was so nice and tasted as good as Stornoway black pudding. Everyone enjoyed their food, portions were generous and all pipping hot.All in all, a great visit and I'd highly recommend this place.Thank you Red Hart :o)

Had a two course evening meal last night. Salmon & crab fishcakes followed by trio of sausages with leek mash, onion gravy & a separate side of veg. Good sized portion & very filling. Paid £8.50 for the main & around £4.95 for starter. Very pleasant environment, bar for the footy & lounge for dining. Staff friendly & welcoming. Fair sized car park but got full quick. Location is right on the mini roundabout in the centre of Blyth. Would recommend & will revisit.

We met friends here as a mid way point for lunch. This was our 3rd visit and the hospitality and food quality was excellent. The range of dishes and specials was to be commended. In fact I can think of a number of outlets I have visited and reviewed who could learn a lot from a visit here! The dishes are well presented and of a good portion size while still being able to manage a desert. All this and at a modest price. We will be returning soon.

Don't let the main road location or tha slightly drab exterior stop you from enjoying a fantastic culinary treat. Although somewhat claustrophobic with little actual formal dining space the food is worth it. Only my first visit but rest assured it will certainly not be my last. I highly recommend this little treasure if only for the fact that the rabbits pheasants etc are shot locally by friends of the landlady. Fresh delicious and beautifully prepared.

A welcoming wheelchair friendly environment serving excellent food and helpful staff. An centrally located pub that has lots of space both inside and out, with an extensive menu to suit all the family. Generous portions at a price that suits most pockets. Despite being a Sunday when places like this get busy, we were not rushed and felt comfortable to sit and relax and enjoy our time together. Lovely staff.

Myself and my wife shared a fantastic valentines day meal here. The food and the service was top drawer and the bar has a good selection of real ales, local sourced as well which in my mind is always a bonus. Having been once before for a birthday celebration we had high expectations, ones that were exceeded my the meal we had the pleasure of enjoying. I truly would recommend calling in and giving them a shot, great food, great people.

We wanted a good pub, with good grub - and we were certainly not disappointed! The food here is honestly wonderful. A good menu to choose from with fish dishes like mussels to beer battered cod. I had a ploughmans which had so much on the plate - paté, big slabs of cheeses, chutney and crusty bread. My partner had beer battered fish n chips and he said it was the nicest he has ever tasted. Great value.. we had 3 courses each with a cider and glass of wine and it came to less that £35! We will most definitely be back for more. All finished off with a nice little walk around Blyth - staff were lovely and it was a nice midweek treat for us. We got home and said "pleased we did that".

Been a few times over the past 7 or 8 months. Menu is extensive so lots of choice. Great venue for a midweek, casual meal out. Inexpensive but generally good - although does seem to vary in quality occasionally. Portion sizes are quite large. As pub food goes, it is quite traditional with the odd twist that makes it a little different. Can get quite busy as is quite small. Definitely worth a try but book for busier nights - Friday/Saturday.

Recently visited for a meal on a Sunday lunchtime. First impressions were that it seemed like the average pub. Not nicely decorated but ok. There were 20 of us that were dining and the bar area was quite small. We all gathered in the bar area expecting some sort of greeting but were ignored by bar staff. Eventually one of our party lost patience and approached the bar to advise the staff we had booked a table. We were then advised we were in a separate dining area which was nicer than the bar area. The service then improved and the staff were polite and helpful. The food was nice and the presentation was also above average especially for desserts. Price wise, we paid £9.50 for 2 courses which I feel was good value. Would recommend even after the shaky start that we experienced.

We called in at Blyth off the A1 (minutes away for those on a through route) to find a Sunday lunch. There is a good choice in Blyth but we chose the Red Hart on the basis of trip adviser reviews. What a good choice! The food is of top restaurant quality but without the prices. We went for the special offer deal- 2 courses for £9.95, unfortunately we didn't have room for a home made pudding for an additional £2. The starter of potatoe Rosti topped with black pudding and bacon was a meal in itself, and the sauce/ jus on both this and the braising steak was the best we've had. There is a wide menu with more upmarket choices and all served in a friendly traditional pub environment. We will be back, thank you!

We decided to take my mum to the Red Hart for a belated birthday meal; we've been on numerous occasions before and never been disappointed. It's a traditional old pub with a traditional decor; no brushed steel and laminate flooring here, and it sells traditional home cooked food - it's certainly not a 'ping' pub.My wife and I had starters, my mussels were absolutely gorgeous and cooked to perfection, and in a lovely sauce. For our main courses my wife had a mushroom risotto and I had a salmon and asparagus pasta, both very healthy sized portions and very tasty. We'd told my mum how generous they were with their portions, so she had the braised steak on a bed of mash but asked for a smaller portion and they duly obliged. We were all stuffed after the main course, but as the desserts looks so tasty we asked if we could each take one home with us and we enjoyed them later in the day.And for 2 starters, 3 mains, 3 desserts and a round of drinks it only came to £44 - now you can't complain at that. The place was full and yes you had to wait a little for your food, but would you rather wait a little and know that it's all being cooked, or get it quickly straight from the microwave?

Having read some excellent reviews about the Red Hart we decided to give it a go. We called prior to ask if we would need to book a table for 8'o,clock and was strongly advised to do so, of which we did. When we arrived there was only one other table in use ? I guess we must have hit a very quiet period. The starter of prawns in garlic were excellent, my wife had the pasta dish (plenty of pasta but not much chicken) of which would have fed two people and I chose the good old favourite cod and chips. The cod was very tasteful but the soggy anemic chips did let the meal down (I'm sure they would have been changed if I had of asked) but didn't think appropriate as my wife's meal would have gone cold whilst I waited. In my opinion they should have been cooked right in the first place, after all, it was only a portion of chips. All in all, a pretty average experience as we have often popped in for a drink and commented how nice the food looked. Better luck next time maybe.
