We decided to go to the Dil Raj Indian Restaurant when staying over for one night in Knaresborough. Our meals were gorgeous. We had poppadoms and the pickle tray to start, then we had the Rogan Josh and the Kahari with vegetable pilau rice and a garlic nan. We ended up sharing and our choices were so different and yet equally delicious. I couldn’t decide which I liked the best. The place was spotlessly clean and the owner was friendly and welcoming. If we pass this way again we will definitely return. I only wish it was our local.

This takeaway curry was disappointing on multiple fronts. It was watery, oily, and lacked flavor, making it a lackluster dining experience. Furthermore, considering its taste and quality, it represented terrible value for money, compounded by an extortionate delivery cost. Overall, a regrettable choice for anyone craving a satisfying curry

Always our go to Indian restaurant- visited here regularly however due to a couple of unenjoyable visits a couple of years ago we have not eaten here for a while. We decided to visit again recently- We certainly won’t be returning anytime soon. Food just ok nothing like it used to be. Empty restaurant - no atmosphere manager as usual full of crap when questioning the bill/drinks. What a shame - this was once a lovely Indian restaurant & a special night out.

Both our starters and Curries were poor to say the least. Only the Nan and rice were of any reasonable standard. However, the staff member we talked to about the quality was very polite and took our observations back to the Chef. Will definitely not be returning.

Draft review of the Dil Raj, visited on Saturday early evening 22nd April 2023 We have been Knaresborough citizens for over 50 years and for the last 30 years the Dil Raj has been the Indian restaurant to go to. Always welcoming and lovely food and they would always listen to the customer and adjust the spice level of their dishes to their liking. We recommended the Dil to our friends and went there on the 22 of April 2023. We had always given glowing reviews, but last night not so, given what we were served ,we will never set foot in the place again! Very short sighted for the owner given that we are Knaresborough citizens who have been coming for years. The quality of the food was appalling. Prices have obviously risen, given the economic climate, but it was clear the owner was more interested in profit making than customer satisfaction; he couldn’t even hire a chef, preferring to cook himself to save money!! He should stick to running a business or get out of it altogether, and leave the cooking to those who know what they are doing!! The standard of service of the people waiting on our table was excellent; we could not fault them; the only good part of the evening. We ordered the sharing sizzling tandoori platter which was just passable. The mint dressing looked like Dijon mustard dressing and was thick and gloopy. My friend and I ordered the chicken Jalfrezi. This has always been excellent; full of chicken. It should look like the attachment. I make it at home and it is a favourite of mine; flavour some and quite spicy. What we got, wasn’t anything like this. We got a small dish of lukewarm muck that had no tomatoes, or green chilli or green pepper, and most of all, you had to look for the chicken!! It looked anaemic and wasn’t even hot in temperature or spice. We complained and told the waiter what we expected the dish to look like and what it should taste like. He went back to the kitchen and arrived back a couple of minutes later with our dishes with a few chopped tomatoes and a couple of green chillies chucked on the top. We said this was disgraceful and that we wanted to talk to the chef. He duly came out and said he recognised me, as he had been here for 30 years. I recognised him as the owner, who clearly wanting to cut costs, hadn’t employed a trained chef, and was doing the cooking himself to save money and increase his profits. He argued with me in front of other customers, justifying his food. Disgraceful behaviour! and not what you do in a public space. He needs to learn manners and that the customer is always right. The next curry we will have will be in Bradford, where they know how to make curries, or I will cook my own because it is a 1000 times better than his!! I wouldn’t touch this place with a barge pole; it has gone down the pan. It really spoiled our evening!!

Took my son. Restaurant more or less empty should have been a warning sign. Poppadoms and pickle tray...standard no issues. Main course came. Plates cold and dishes which food was in. Curries tasted like they had come from a tin. Chicken was poor and tasted bland and child like portions ie small. At least the chapati was hot. Paid bill and left as was getting the train. Not what I expected from a town center Indian restaurant. Will not return.

We have visited this restaurant many times over the years however after our last two visits we have decided we wont be returning, We visited a couple of weeks ago and thought the meals we ordered were very poor, lamb was tough and curries tasteless along with very poor onion bahjis. we thought the restaurant was just having a bad day and decided to return yesterday, which happened to be Valentines day. The restaurant was busy however they only have around 7-8 tables so not to any extreme. The waiter took our order, and i confirmed 3 times what i wanted to eat, we enjoyed the poppadum's and pickle tray while waiting for our starters to arrive, my partner enjoyed his fish starter however again the onion bajis were very poor again, greasy and powdery inside with very little onion content, We waited a long time after for our main courses of which both came wrong, the garlic chilli chicken was watery no taste and very little chicken in, it also was a potion size to feed a small child, i ordered a naga donner stir fry with rice, i was given donner meat and chips, i explained this was what nether of us had ordered and was told by the waiter that it wasn't his fault as he was on his own, He then went into the kitchen and brought me a plate of donner meat again not a stir fry and told me to take the excess meat home with me. At this point we decided to leave . Unfortunately we will not return to this restaurant due to two very poor meals in two weeks,

Daughter had veggie starter (great, she says) and a massive portion of chips. I had lamb kandhari for the first time: I wish I had ordered two ! I can't wait to have it again and I won't be waiting !not to do so. Best curry I have had for a very long time. Dil Raj: number 1...Very well done.

The sauce doesn’t even cover the meat A quarter full in container like we got leftovers of someone else’s curry We paid £52 for 2 starters which we ate in the restaurant 2 curry’s , chappits and a garlic Nan and rice How disappointing in this curry or lack of it I Mean be fair it’s just not on taking peoples hard earned money to be given this Terrible you should be ashamed .. If it had been open this morning we would have taken it back to discuss this in person We have now gone home and we will not return when in knaresborough there are other restaurants more deserving !

Can't upload my videos so just got screenshots from both! Visited Knaresborough a few weeks ago and found this lovely gem of a restaurant. It was clean and tidy on the inside and the waiter was very attentive. The food was absolutely delicious! For my starter, I had the chicken chaat puri which was a nice, small portion size. I could taste the fresh coriander in the curry and the chicken was lovely and tender. The Puri itself was fluffy and crisp without being greasy. The mint sauce was also lovely with a slight sweet taste. The Naga donner was a lovely main! It wasn't too spicy and it was a large portion size, but not so large that anything went to waste! Brilliant flavours with everything cooked well. I left feeling satisfied. I will definitely be visiting again the next time I am in Knaresborough!

Called in and met by a very young and very polite waiter. Sat at a table and said waiter brought me a bottle opener - I heard it was 'bring your own'. Some poppodoms ordered including some ace lime pickle. A chap came from the kitchen and asked, not quietly, 'what does he want?', meaning me for a starter. I had starter of spiced fish - 4, 5 small bite size pieces of deep fried fish, bit banal. Could have done with a decent salad with it or a raita. Then a vegetable Madras - the sauce was okay, bit of bite, but the vegetables all appeared straight from some frozen bag - what is it with kitchens not wanting to produce fresh food? Laziness? Altogether, underwhelming.

First visit to Knaresborough and was very exited about eating our takeaway after reading the reviews of 2 x mixed grill and chilli bread at a cost of £23.50. How disappointing! Tiny portions and undercooked bread, only 1 tiny salad between us. Our local takeaway at home is 300% better and a much bigger portion. Give this takeaway a wide birth!

What on earth did they deliver? Bright red, sloppy and full of onions. Oh and 3 cubes of something that resembled chicken. I asked them on two occasions to check with the chef if my dish as actually a Jalfrezi. The staff seemed totally uninterested! I went to the now renamed Dilraj last night following a recommendation from a friend. I have a wheat/gluten intolerance so sometimes find food choices a little difficult but most restaurants now tend to be very good offering many different gluten-free options. The Dil however really worried me! After explaining my gluten intolerance to our waiter (owner?) I was a little unnerved when he didn't really know what gluten was and I tried to explain. He assured me none of his dishes had "wheat flour" as they use "normal flour" ... he said even the onion bajis and naan were ok which I'm pretty sure was incorrect!! Anyway I opted for what I thought would be the safer option of a Chicken tandoori starter and chicken balti main course hoping no wheat would be in these. I have to say the food tasted good (probably 4 star) but I'm pretty sure my dishes contained gluten as I have had to take the morning off work! (losing 2 stars for a lack of basic ingredients knowledge!)If you can eat anything you'll be fine here and have a good meal. If you have any food intolerances I would probably suggest going elsewhere!

'Pitstop' curry on trip to Scotland - came off the A1 to get away from the service station food and found this curry house. The whole enterprise seems to be based on the food itself, with a minimum of fanfare: not licensed, so soft drinks only unless you bring your own; fairly basic decor, and our table was a bit cramped: they'd squeezed two tables into a window space where there was only really room for one. But if you're happy to accept this, it's all good: fast, friendly service and good food, including a lot of in-house specialist dishes and a vegetarian selection in addition to the usual standard fare. Good value, too: certainly worth our detour off the beaten track. We'd happily return.

Visited on a Friday evening, quiet on arrival but soon became busier with diners. Pleasant welcome and orders taken in good time. We had taken our own wine and the glasses were available on the table. Food and service were excellent and the bill was very reasonable, friendly and experienced staff. Actually had take away from there on Sunday evening and once again the food was delicious. Would recommend and will definately return often.

we got 2 chicken bhuna takeaways, when we got home started to eat it, it actually tasted of chemicals, we both instantly said the same thing, smelt each others food and agreed, we phoned the place up but they didn't want to know! honestly was the worst curry I have ever had!!!!!!!!!!

Raj was some of the best Indian I've had, great value, big portions and extremely fresh. We had a lovely chat with the owner who was friendly and genuinely cared about our experience. Bumped into a local who said he's been coming here for 10 years and swears by the place!

Simple restaurant with good food. No liquor license but this did detract from food. Friendly and helpful staff

I went to the Raj with a group of 5 others a couple of Saturdays ago and for the first time was less than impressed. We booked in advance and arrived on time to find that our booking had not been passed on to the staff on the night, so we had to hover waiting for a table to become available. When one finally did empty and we took our seats, when one of our party asked for a coffee when the waiter asked for our drinks order, she was met with an odd grimace of disapproval from the waiter and the coffee never arrived. Our glasses were dumped on the table, still dripping wet and of varying styles and sizes and other diners were having to fetch their own glasses from the serving area. We then waited for 2 hours for our meal to arrive and when it did it was tepid. One of the dishes, butter chicken had separated into a hard layer of yellow fat on the top and a cold layer of unappetising meat underneath. One waiter in particular was brash and appeared not to want to be there. He persistently dug his elboes into me whilst rudely leaning directly across me to serve people next to me, despite there being plenty of room not to do this.In short, the night was a disaster which is uncharacteristic of the Raj from my previous experiences. It was bad enough for me not to want to give them a second chance. Whilst it was a busy and chaotic evening, it would help if the waiters didn't take this out on their customers.

book in advance midweek for bangla deal, starter main rice or naan for £6.95 - absolute bargain! especially as it is unlicenced so you take your own alcohol. Very cheap meal out. Always had a good standard of food and have never been dissapointed.

This restaurant (now known as Dil Raj) has a great relaxed atmosphere with fantastic food.I would recommend the tandoori starter which comes on a platter still sizzling and also the naan bread which is crisp and fresh.Highly recommended.

We love visiting this restaurant for a budget night out because we take our own alcohol. The tandoori dishes are especially good along with quality side dishes. The staff are always very friendly.

The Raj or Dil Raj as it is now called is a lovely Indian restaurant. The food is first class quality and for a cheap price. The Bangla nights are amazing value, book 24 hours in advance and you can get a mixed starter, curry and rice or naan for about £7 per person. Cheaper to eat in than get take out! Lots of selection on the menu to suit all tastes. Staff are friendly and best of all, you can take your own alcohol which makes eating there cheap as well as cheerful. I eat there regularly, would definitely recommend!

We visited knaresborough while staying at Harrogate. Intening to eat in one of the pubs a local and barman recommend the Raj. We were not disapointed. The food was excellent and the service good and friendly. The prices are about average but best of all its a BYOB so you can take a good bottle or two without being ripped off.

Living 300 miles away in Bournemouth we googled local Indians and chose this one, glad we did, not licensed so take your own alcohol, suits us! Food was good quality and good portion sizes. We tried different dishes to our norm as we were away and were delighted with delicate flavours and well spiced food. The service was excellent and at £22 for two mains, special rice, saag and raita dip I thought it was a bargain. The special rice was delicious with all the bits in it! Open 'til 11 pmShame they don't deliver to Bournemouth!

We went for an evening meal and this was about the only place we could find open. Apart from the fact I found it a bit expensive the food was very good and freshly prepared. The service was good but there was a workman in measuring the place up and he was taking up the waiters time. It is not licensed at all so if you decide to go take a bottle with you.

We have been going to the Raj restaurant and take away for 20 years. The food is delicious, you have to take your own drinks as the restaurant is not licenced. Ali and his team are friendly and welcoming. It's a brilliant place for a get together or a celebation, we recently celebrated a Birthday there with 30 family and friends, the food was amazing and great value for money.

Everything first class. This was our first order and we really enjoyed tonight’s delivery! The curry main dishes were thick and not oily like some other takeaway curry dishes. We will be back for certain. Having used woodlands tandoori for a few years that’s just been taken over and not doing well at all on reviews except their relatives then this is a nice alternative . 10/10
