Very good food, higly recommended for vegetarians and vegans, there is an entire vegan menu. The service was excellent.

First time in Bristol and was looking for a lovely Indian, amazing food and the costumer service was fantastic! Really recommend!

Lovely experience. Authentic Indian with all Indian staff. The cook adjusts each dish according to one’s taste. Crazy good value. Amidst all the pubs in Old Town, Queen’s Square, one goes downstairs to fragrant India! Highly recommended!

I’m a (briefly) returning ex-pat and this place twice scratched my itch for a proper Ruby in my brief time in Bristol. Naans are huge - as in genuinely shareable !

We had a delicious post theatre meal at Raj tonight! The food was so flavoursome and the meat in both dishes (lamb/chicken) was super tender. Rumel was our waiter and he was really kind and gave us some helpful tips on what to order - he was right, it was amazing! Would definitely recommend 😊

When in Bristol for monthly meeting, a group of us always go for a curry and few drinks for the evening meal, having visited some of the more fashionable establishment we were recommended the Raj for something different, on entrance I was a little sceptical having been dazzled by the bright lights and decor of Urban tandoori etc, but found the staff in the Raj to be more than accommodating to a medium sized group, the menu was not only ample but the staff took the time to make recommendations based on discussed likes, I settled for the Chicken Biriyani with Razala vegetable curry and was not disappointed, the side dishes were also a very good standard, all in all would definitely go back with group but would not use for a 1st date

I had raw chicken in my Byriani. They replaced it obviously. But when the bill came, they left the Byriani on the bill but tool off the service charge: so the waitress (who was really good) lost out and the restaurant didn't. When challenged they just said "it's fine"

Super accomodating place, turned up at 11 and was met with amazing customer service. The food was excellent with big portions! Easily the best curry I have had in a long time, will be returning!

Had the best curry I've had in ages tonight at the Raj! The food was delicious - the best dips to go with the popudums EVER! - and the curries were all utterly yummy and packed with flavour. I'm dairy & gluten allergic and my diet was catered for perfectly - even down to the dairy-free raita which I've always missed when going out for a curry! The service was impeccable and we all had a lovely time - I will definitely be returning and thank you to all the staff who made my birthday really special!

Came for a birthday meal on a Thursday evening. Food was delicious and service was impeccable! Early bird menu was really good value and they were very accommodating with menu changes. Highly recommend!

A gathering of work mates before a retirement. Met elsewhere for a few drinks to warm up. Then realised that we’d made no booking anywhere because we hadn't any idea of numbers - but half a dozen of us were very hungry. One or a couple of us remembered being to the Raj before. It’s convenient and just opposite the Bristol Old Vic. Nothing remotely flash, a relaxed everyday curry house in the basement. Despite having no reservation, we went down to look, there was a bit of bustle and were asked to pause in the waiting area. But after five minutes they’d pushed a couple of tables together and we went in. Nothing flash but it’s got a good homely amicable feel. Predictable menu but the food turned out to be better than average and tasty, hearty, well spiced etc. Not expensive and we all had a good time. Not bad on a dank February Monday evening. Happy to recommend.

A delightful Indian eatery with a vibrant flavours. Chicken and garlic naan were heavenly. Cosy ambience, warm service. A must visit.

I love this place! The food is taste consistently delicious and fresh, the restaurant is clean and cosy and the staff are friendly and attentive. What’s not to like!? Raj has been in business for many years so they must be doing something right.

Despite the large number in the party food was cooked to perfection and service was great. I would definitely recommend.

Could not fault the experience. Had lots of lovely food and was steered in the right direction as I don’t normally adventure too much with indian cuisine. All the staff, especially Ali Rummel, made us feel cared for and helped lots with the trying of new things. In all, I’d like to thank everyone for a great evening and recommend it for anyone who is considering. Please forgive me Ali, if I spelt your name wrong.

First time we’ve been here, convenient to both the Old Vic and tiger Hilton. Traditional style and menu, very hospitable and busy even midweek. Chicken Tikka Dansak especially good. Recommended. Will come back.

Popped in here late at night after seeing a play at the Bristol Old Vic which is almost next door. Despite the lateness of the hour the staff were so kind as to supply an excellent meal for two and a bottle of wine.

We had an Indian in the Raj last night. We had an unusual request, asking to eat in with our dog. The staff welcomed us in and we all had a great meal.

we researched before deciding on raj as our curry choice .. google said open walked all way there to find it closed... so again low rating for not updating their openings

Came here midweek and it was absolutely packed, which should have been a good sign. It wasn’t. Took an absolute eternity for the food to come and when it did, it was cold (not like warm, cold). Because by that time we were in a rush we couldn’t afford to sent it back so just ate it anyway.When the bill eventually came and we left the right amount of cash the waiter said “you do realise the service charge is not included?” So we said yes and explained why we weren’t leaving one, given how long the food to to come and how cold it was, and he said “what do you expect? We can’t serve everything warm when we’re this busy.” Oh well, you live and learn. One to avoid.

A pleasant Indian restaurant, unremarkable food but nice atmosphere. A good place to meet for conversation - no intrusive music, booths to sit in, attentive and unobtrusive service; food arrived in good time for us to go on to the theatre.

We have eaten here on two occasions whilst visting the area on nights out,the staff are welcoming and friendly,the resturant has a proper tradional indian styke decor,the meals on both visits have been excellent and prices are very resonable,we will defiantly be returning.

We have become regulars here at the Raj, and have never been disappointed, the staff are so friendly, and the food is excellent. I have introduced so many friends and family to you. See you again on Friday.

We visited this restaurant as we could not get into Nutmeg I ordered Butter Chicken the dish that arrived I could not eat there was no flavour and it looked like a pot of cream had just been added chicken cooked separately I am a chef myself and I was not impressed with what was served to myself I complained to the waiter and he just stated butter chicken I certainly would not recommend this restaurant

When i saw that Ian Botham and Patrick STEWART had visited I thought i was in for a treat. Wrong, Firstly there was no card machine and the food was bland, no spice whatsoever and was way over salted. Staff were polite and attentive but food distictly average.

Lovely meal here last night. Me and my husband both had different meals and they were both delicious and full of flavour. We dined as part of the early bird menu and it was excellent value including a drink. Our bill came to £37 including drinks, poppadoms, pickles, starters and mains. The location could be difficult if you have access requirements as there are around 15 steps to go underground. Everything was lovely and clean. The staff were very attentive. Perfect base for a central starting point in Bristol. We cannot wait for our next visit!

I came in on New Year's Eve and didn't want to get myself involved in all the festivities. So I walked to this charming spot near the Hotel Bristol and was treated like a king. A fantastic early-bird meal for only about 15 GBP -- huge portions, soup, naan and a big bottle of water. The proprietors were friendly and the food couldn't have been bettered. I hope I'll come to Bristol again -- I know exactly the place I will eat.

The service last night was very poor. It took over an hour for our mains to arrive and when they did they were bland and greasy. I had chicken dhansack and it was far too sweet and not hot enough. When we asked for coffee afterwards the waiter looked like a startled rabbit (I think their coffee machine had broken). The food gave me all-night indigestion. The noise level in the restaurant was also unbearably high. Not a place for quiet, relaxing meal. Will not be returning.

My partner and I went last night and took advantage of their early bird deal, a starter, main, sundries and a drink for £15.95. Thought this might have meant smaller portions but far from it. It was a feast! We were full and even had to box some up to take home. All the food was lovely, in particular the starter of garlic chicken tikka, my new favourite thing. Very nice decor, spotlessly clean and very friendly, helpful staff. A real pleasure to eat here.

Just back at the Raj in Bristol I have been visiting this restaurant for over 10 years and never disappointed great value amazing food and excellent service if you’re looking for an exceptional India restaurant eat here you won’t be disappointed and nothing in Bristol comes close to this place.

This was a very disappointing meal. We chose a chicken tikka masala, but the sauce was far too sweet and almost unpalatable. We asked to be reseated because we could barely have a conversation because of the acoustics in the basement dining room. We will not go back.

First time ordering or visiting this place. The mushroom rice was luke warm and the chicken tikka madras was the hottest madras we’ve ever had which spoilt it and the chicken tikka masala was too mild and runny

The meal was mostly OK, the sauce was rather watery and service was slow for only a three-person party. The beer was cold and the chutneys were also great. We waited half an hour after eating to be offered the bill.

I organised a meal for work colleagues last week, and having been here before and never been disappointed I booked the Raj again. We had a really great meal, we were not rushed and all of us had a great night with a fine meal. As I left to leave the restaurant I must have dropped my mobile phone next to the table, as when the staff were clearing the table away they came running out after me to ensure that I was quickly repatriated with it. Thanks for your honesty guys, and thanks for the great meal too. We will be back again!

This restaurant is a little hidden away at first and we were a little unsure about it, but we were glad we went! Great food, lovely staff and a nice atmosphere for an evening meal. Very enjoyable, would definitely return!

3 days in Bristol and the Mrs Fancied a curry so we thought we would try the Raj, so glad we did, had an amazing meal it really was, served piping hot and super tasty if im honest its probably the best indian we have had and we have been to a few, try this place i promise you will not be dissatisfied, big thankyou to Rumer and Aziz for making us feel so welcome, will we be back, dam right see you again soon

I’m a regular visitor of Raj, nice and cozy restaurant with friendly staff. Curry’s and naan are wonderfull. It’s open till very late so even available for a late arrival!

Not the best curry we’ve ever had. Service was fine curry was a bit watery and not very spicy - a bit like a casserole.

We visited and had the early bird menu. Very tasty food and extremely good value for money. Not the best curry ive ever had but cannot complain. Only small issue is the waiter added a tip to my bill and didnt even mention it. I would have normally left a tip anyway but found this a bit cheeky

After an all day party we wanted some food. My husband suggested this place and we were so hungry. The food had no depth of flavour or spice. The sauce on my husband’s tikka masala was horrible, again no spice no depth of flavour. The chicken was in huge pieces that were very dry. It was edible at best. Another customer complained about her Korma which she said didn’t taste of anything either. Sadly not good food at all.

We are curry bloggers and must say the food at the Raj has always been good. Atmosphere good in a underground cave in lovely part of Bristol.

I rank all other Indian restaurants based on Raj! It's been 15 years since my last visit and it's still ranks near the top! I will have to say the Chicken Tikka Masala seems much sweeter than I remember. However, my memory could be a bit off after all these years! Overall, the food is wonderful, the service top notch and the location is great. Even though they are in a "basement", you'd never really know.

Went to the restaurant with friends on Saturday evening and had what can only be described as a dreadful experience.

Visited, on a Saturday night husband ordered tandoori chicken dry and tough uneatable son ordered lamb was served chicken he couldn't eat it aso dry .other two meals chicken served in a bland sauce. No taste to it at all.if this is great Indian food we will dine in a Chinese next time

Went in for a birthday meal with family for the first time!was not disappointed atall!! We were disappointed with our welcome and also the quality of the food. The onion bhajis were bland and the curry lacked flavour. What a shame.

This is a perfectly ordinary Indian restaurant and is one of my regulars. Today, I had the early-bird menu - starting with shami kebab, then keema matar (minced lamb with peas), naan and a bottle of Cobra beer £15.95 plus tip. Very good, as always.

Had a lovely meal tonight, the lamb was very tender and the curry had a lovely taste not hidden by the heat despite it being a hot curry. Sadly we had to rush our meal to get off to the theatre but would love to come back when less rushed and probably not on a Saturday evening.

Really disappointed with this restaurant given the good reviews, had a visitng family member so took them for a walk around the docks and booked the Raj. We all found the service surley and the food terrible, reminded us of late night indians from 30 years ago, all dishes tasted bland and the same - one of the women went to the ladies and said the smell was so bad she could hardly continue eating. Very disappointing and much better options elsewhere - given this is in King Street I would have never booked as thought it was probably focussed on the late night, after pub trade - only the reviews made me give it a try - mistake, definitely a place to go after midnight and several beers!

We’ve been coming to the Raj for many years and have always enjoyed the food. The chicken chilli masala and chicken vindaloo were great - spicy and tasty but not at all overpowering. Always dependable yummy food, whether you eat in or take away.

What great service and curry for a group. We went for the early bird menu and found the food tasty and good value. Nan breads are awesome.... very authentic. Service was prompt and helpful and quick despite us being a group of 18.
