Raj in West Oxfordshire

The food and service is utterly disgusting. We booked in for the 30th September. However, when we arrived we were told that our table was given to someone else and that we'd have to wait another 10 mins. 10 minutes passed and we were told another 15 minutes. If it wasn't a birthday meal we would've left and gone to the Shaan Restaurant. When we sat down, we asked questions about some dishes on the menu only to be responded back with, "you're white, stick to the mild dishes". I was gob smacked with the waiter. I requested for the manger but the waiter had already stormed off muttering "honky" under his breathe. Disgusting and racist. I got up and immediately left with my family. Never again.

We were visiting friends who live in Witney so decided to have a takeaway. We rang and placed the order using a 20% off offer that was on the internet. We were told that this had expired but the restaurant still honoured it. We were kept in touch about the order by text and it was ready in less than 30 minutes. We collected it and were served by a very friendly member of staff who took great care to explain the order and even gave our daughters a red rose each to take home which was a lovely gesture. The food was excellent - there is lots of choice on the menu and it was well prepared and very filling.

The best Indian food I have ever tasted. Friendly and well mannered individual when I ordered over the phone. Food packed well, no spilling, and very clean. We used the takeaway service from here, the meal was okay but alot of the dishes tasted the same and some items were forgotten off the delvery.

We have used the Raj before but have ordered from lots of Indian restaurants locally. The Raj are now on Deliveroo locally so we ordered from them again. We had forgotten just how delicious their food was. Best take away we have had in a long time, and delivered quicker than stated too. Well done Raj, we’ll be back!

The food was very tasty and very generous portions. 1st time we have eaten here. Delivery was quick and efficient. Only 1 down fall and that was 1 item we ordered was wrong, but we ate it and enjoyed the meal. Will definitely be using again.

The food is sooo delicious and freshly cooked. Good size portions aswell, staff are friendly and welcoming. We have yet to eat in, but the decor looks amazing after their recent revamp. This is now are 'go to' Indian takeaway.

Tried the Raj in Witney for a take away delivery for the first time this week and we are already looking at the menu for our 2nd one on Saturday !! Easy to order on line and could choose the delivery time. Only a few minutes late and the driver was very apologetic. It was worth the slight delay as the food was delicious.

Raj in Witney is my favourite Indian restaurant in Oxfordshire. The quality of the ingredients is top notch, and every dish is delicious and nicely presented. The king prawns are huge and sublime! The owner always goes the extra mile. Highly recommended.

Excellent curry. Whole family loves it. Certainly makes the lock down easier. We have a regular delivery, fantastic food and well priced. We also have the occasional meal in the restaurant, very friendly, the children love it. We all look forward to a curry night. Highly recommend.

As a regular home delivery customer of Raj, I think they offer by far the best Indian food in Witney. The standard is consistently very good and their team are always friendly.

Chose to eat here randomly on my first visit to Witney. The service was fast, friendly and professional and the restaurant was clean and welcoming. The food was reasonable but not exceptional.

I've been enjoying the restaurants run by this man for around 30 years. As always, we had the most delicious food, generous portions (enough for breakfast), at extremely reasonable prices. Will return asap, and you should try it too - the Sunday banquet is marvellous!!!

I had Lamb Rogan and it tasted delicous and was cooked tenderly. Definitely would recommend it to all! Its a family friendly place, good for couples or even buisness eatings.

Consistently fresh, good quality, very tasty, excellent food, been going here for over 10 years and it's still the best. Cobra on draught is great. I recommend the Garlic Chili Tikka balti, Chicken Tikka Bhuna, Saag Aloo, Pilau Rice .. Eat in or takeaway, both great.

Visited the Raj last Saturday night with my husband. We had the most amazing meal everything was fresh, hot, extremely tasty and good value. Highly reccomend the chicken rezala. Service was great, always such a warm welcome :) will be visiting again very soon.

Popped in for a much needed meal after a day trip to London. We were served quickly and the food was perfectly cooked particularly the chicken which was very tender. We couldn’t finish it all, which was a pity as everything was delicious. It was a quiet evening and the staff were very attentive without being intrusive.

After living in Witney for several years, I recently ate here for the first time; I wish I had gone sooner! Really delicious dishes, good side portions and overall a friendly and cosy environment. Good value and I will definitely be eating here again.

We visit Raj once a week and are never disappointed. You will get a lovely piping hot meal and excellent service. The meals are always tasty and well presented and the manager always has time to have a little chat too which is a nice gesture. We are always greeted with a polite cheery smile and often get offered a complimentary drink which is a nice touch.

We have been coming to this restaurant for our Indian food for a couple of years. It’s by far the best in Witney. The staff are friendly and they also offer 20% discount on collection - very well-priced. I recommend the chicken tikka korai!

There are lots of great places to eat in Witney. There are also some over rated places. But The Raj is a gem not because of the decor but the staff care so much about customer experience and get every aspect right from the moment they greet you.The menu is varied and interesting for all tastes and I have loved trying new dishes - really flavoursome - the chef is an artist too it’s all beautifully though unpretentiously presented. Have been amazed by the variety of flavours and quality of ingredients. If you like food you’re in for a treat and if you prefer to stick to the old usuals no one is judging. Even side dishes such as Vegetable rice and naan are of best quality. Everyone needs to up their game to keep up!

A rainy cold night in Witney and everyone sticks to one end of town, but park at the far end of where Hackets and Dapper Street are and at the furthest corner there is a cut through to enjoy the little gems you have been missing. I visited the Raj on Tuesday night, I've been before and the food is delicious and freshly cooked, the staff are friendly and efficient and it's a great place to get a group together for a catch up as the space allows for various table arrangements. After a delicious meal with a friend and a good chat, the night was nicely topped off with a complimentary drink from management. It's healthy to have competition in the curry stakes in Witney, but give this place a whirl you won't be disappointed.

We were looking for a restaurant that had good vegetarian options. Some places we looked at were quite limited but the Raj's offerings looked well thoughtout and they had veg versions of some of the dishes we really like. The vegetable masala and the paneer jalfrezi were excellent. The price was also very reasonable with the collection discount. We will definitely return.

If you want an enjoyable relaxing meal without any stress this is the place for you. The staff are polite and courteous and not over intrusive like some restaurants. The food is tasty and excellent value for money. We've visited twice in a week and haven't been disappointed. Give the little restaurants a chance people.

I hoped this time would be better. It was the worst Indian meal we have had, anywhere. I opted for two side dishes as the vegetable curry still lingered in my memory. Tarka Dhal and Saag Paneer. The texture of both were creamy and so sweet I could not eat it. My husband had Vegetable Shashlik Massala ("Grilled in tandoor with green peppers, tomatoes and onion, then cooked in massala sauce. Hot or medium"). Well it certainly wasn't grilled! It was a container of watery overcooked vegetables (mainly onion) that was hot but tasteless. He never leaves food: he flushed this away! Our friends had Tandoori King Prawn (£13.95): it was a container of bright red, pasty sauce with 3 prawns! That's £4.65 a prawn. Chicken Korma: watery sauce. All of us had digestive upsets that night and the following day but our friend who had the korma was so nauseous she couldn't eat at all the next day. When we last had a takeaway from here, it was so bad that I wrote a letter, actually two letters, to the manager. I never received the courtesy of a reply. I don't live in Witney so fortunately the choice of never having to eat food from the Raj again is an easy one. The one star is because the service was okay.

Very friendly service. Ordered lamb Bhuna and chicken passanda together with a few side dishes. Food arrived quickly and looked very appetising. Lamb and chicken very tender and both sauces were fresh and very tasty. We were very well looked after and had a thoroughly enjoyable evening and meal. We will definitely be back.

I had another great meal here last Thursday. The staff were very attentive and the food was delicious. My son had his usual child friendly Butter Chicken whilst I went for a spicier "lobster" king prawn dish recommended to me by the owner, aromatic with just the right amount of kick and a very decent portion size too. There's no doubt we will be back sometime soon.

Tonight was the first time I had been here and I was not disappointed. I’ve never found a lot of luck with Indians, usually I find them overpriced and not the best food. Tonight was reasonably priced and delicious food. The staff who served us were very helpful in suggestions on what to have, very quick at getting the food cooked and out and every time they walked by made sure we were liking it. I will be going back with my vegetarian wife to see what she thinks! Would recommend

The Raj is enjoying a revival of really good quality food. The ambience is just as good as it always was but at the moment it's lacking trade as are many of the High street eateries ... to all those locals out there who used to frequent this place it's time to return. We have visited three times now in as many months and the food is first rate ... not really even typical .. the portions are just right and not over the top .. the menu is vast .. but the food is really good and served piping hot which you dont always get at the Indian! ..

Lived in witney 2 years and can't believe have only just discovered this hidden gem! Having missed proper desi style Indian food I was so happy to finally find food that tasted as good as home cooked Indian food. We had chana masala, chicken staff curry, vegetable rice and garlic naan. Have been to shaan as we didn't know any other places and I find their food really sweet and nothing like traditional desi style food. Goodbye Shaan hello Raj!!! I would highly recommend this place and the dishes we ordered to anyone wanting proper Indian food.

On a tip-off from a friend I popped in last night and gave this restaurant a try. Booked a table for two at seven not surprisingly the place was almost empty, which was great for us as we had other things to do that evening. The food we had was both fresh and vibrant and not in the least bit bland. I would recommend this highly to any other lover of Indian food.

An excellent takeaway curry. I had the chicken Madras with pilau rice and a keema naan. This was a proper curry with the right mix of spice and flavours. Some curries are bland or just vary in heat. This felt like the chef really understands how to put together good authentic tasty Indian dishes. It was so busy in the restaurant that they were turning people away which says how good the food must be. Despite being busy my meal came out with no delay. They chucked in some poppadoms, salad and chutney as an extra which was a nice touch.

We decided to go to The Raj for a change. We arrived just as it had opened, a nice looking restaurant and clean. We got seated and menus brought over and asked what drinks we would like and if we wanted popadoms. But then the waiter came and stood opposite us making us feel a little uncomfy, within mins he was over asking what we would like, and we said we needed more time. We ordered food a little later and wow the portions were a very good size and the food was lovely, would we go again yes we would. I just think all the waiters need to take a step back when you are eating, or seat the first customers at the back of the restaurant.

I ate here recenly with friends. It was a midweek night and the place was amlost empty, which is great if you want your food quickly but not great for atmosphere The food itself was OK - nothing amazing and nothing bad, just an everage sort of curry really. The restaurant itself is nicely laid out, the staff are friendly and the menu has all the usual classics that you know and love.

Since I caught the waiters in Shaan tipping the poppadom chutneys back into storage jars behind the service area , we’ve moved to the Raj as our regular.

A night out with friends who last ate here 18 months ago with us and sadly things had not improved since then and in fact in some ways the cooking of the sauces and overall food knowledge of the staff had got worse.We have eaten here on at least 6 times over the past 5 years when the staff and chef had been aware of the issues around GF and DF requirements and been able and willing to adapt dishes accordingly but sadly on this visit there was more or less a zero awareness of the dangers or issues asssociated with these intolerances. It was a major challenge to get through to our waiter what GF and DF intollerances were and to insist on what we wanted and how it needed to be prepared and cooked, which to be fair, eventually happened,

Been to Raj lots of times for many years. Excellent quality food which is really nicely spiced and prepared. Excellent service and nice relaxed atmosphere. I particularly like the Chicken Tikka Jalfrezi and also, sizzling Chicken Tikka is excellent. Saag Aloo very good, Their Rice is really good also. Coffee is excellent which is nicely served in a pot so you can help yourself to a bit more than just 1 cup.. Really nice all round! :)

Went here for a takeaway, had a chicken curry ( it was nice to have proper chicken), unlike other Indian restaurants which the chicken has been slimy in texture. I enjoyed the meal and service was lovely and friendly with a drink offered while we waited for our food. I would recommend this place for food to eat in or for a takeaway could not fault it.

After reading numerous reviews my girlfriend decided she wanted to come here for her birthday meal, the head of house was extremely friendly and gave us a few recommendations. He was extremely passionate about his business and the surrounding areas of Witney, the food was unreal. Starters were ordered and at the table within minutes and the same for the mains, very fresh and very hot. We agree with the positive reviews and disagree with the negatives! A must visit - very courteous but not overwhelming.

Two friends and I were returning to Abingdon after playing tourist for the day and were hungry. We stopped in Witney and randomly picked the Raj. The restaurant was empty but they seemed to be doing a brisk takeaway service. The food that we got was very good but there were a couple of disappointments. We ordered a particular wine and it was unavailable and one of the kulfi flavours was unavailable as well. Still the staff were very friendly and helpful.

Sunday evening buffets are fantastic value and quality. Starter, main, side dish and rice/bread for 10.95!!! We've been coming every Sunday for ages now and we always really enjoy the food. As a local to witney I can say that this is by far my favourite Indian In witney.

After a day where we'd managed to get to 22h without getting home or eating, we'd got a bit grumpy and fed-up. Thankfully the lovely staff at the Raj welcomed us warmly, as they always do, and have done for over 20 years, in this and their previous restaurant. We went for some long-term favourites, prawn puree, lamb dansak and sag dhal, with mushroom rice, roti and chapati​ and weren't disappointed. Having said that, we've pretty much eaten our way through the menu, and it's all good.

Went there for a meal. The food was disgusting . There was a hair in the rice. Showed it to the owner who replied some customers put there own hair in the food to get a discount. We thought this was an outrage we asked to pay the bill. The owner and one off the other waiters were standing in plain view laughing at us. When the bill came it seemed a bit expensive so we asked for a menu . It turned out they had charged us a pound or two on every item and even then the total was incorrect the total was a tenner higher even with the fake prices. When we pointed this out . They replied sorry we have charged you the take away price (TAKE AWAY PRICES ARE CHEAPER)we replied it's still a tenner extra on the total which he grumpily said sorry (The take away menu was different to what they had claimed as we took one hone)GUYS THIS PLACE IS A TOTAL RIP OFF THIS AIN'T A RESTURANTS IT'S MORE LIKE A RUN DOWN CAFE. People don't waste your hard earned money there. GO TO THE SHAAN THERE FOOD IS A TESTAMENT TO INDIAN QUALITY CAINE AND THE OWNER WHO IS IQBAL IS A KIND GENTLEMEN WHO EXCEEDS IN THE ART OF CUSTOMER SERVICE.

Me and my partner came here on a Saturday night and was slightly worried by the fact that it was almost empty when we went in. But I think everyone else must of just been at home not doing much because the food was brilliant. Obviously the service was brilliant because they weren't busy but then some restaurants can even mess that up! Food was extremely well priced too.

The food was okay, nothing to get excited about on the whole. We visited on Saturday evening, the 8th April 2017. The place seemed clean. The staff weren't very welcoming. They seemed really grumpy. Our service was okay, but lots more effort needed on customer service. We waited so long for the bill, we got up in the end and paid at the bar.

I have been here before few years ago and I could wait to have a dinner there again. The food was just as good as last. Simply fabulous and the service was very attentive. I can recommend this restaurant to everyone. I am looking forward to visit back when I am in Witney.

This is the second time I have visited the Raj. It is a very elegant place, well decorated, comfortable, and (on a cold January evening) warm. The food was excellent and the portions were generous, and unlike most other Indian restaurants, there was a selection of wines by the glass. Thoroughly recommended!

We had a party of 30 people on last Wednesday. It was my 48th birthday. Raj did an excellent job for us. The food was awesome and the service was extraordinarily. I had a chicken Shashlik which I have to say the best I had ever. The background music and the atmosphere really was an add on. Loved the evening, loved the hard work done by the restaurant staffs. We have been to Raj several times over the last five years and the quality of the food and the friendliness and efficiency of the service have always impressed us... and tonight has been no exception. Highly recommended.

As we walked in we we noticed a short man outside who was smoking what seemed not to be tobacco. The waiter couldn't speak English. He seemed dazed out . We were given the wrong drinks . When we asked for our drinks to be sorted out the waiter seemed get angry. When we ordered it was the same guy who was standing outside smoking who took our order his eyes were red and he kept giggling. When our food came out it was the wrong order they gave us the order for the table next to us . The original order came out a while later there was no lamb as we ordered there was chicken instead . It was the most bland curry I have ever tasted the service is non existence . This Resturant is the worst place you can go in Witney take our advise go to Shan it is rated the number one Resturant in witney

We went to Raj for my brothers birthday (a party of 28) This was booked well in advance and my brother went in the night before to confirm plans. At this time the manager confirmed we had to whole back area for our meal. On arrival they had crammed 2 tables in our reserved area with other diners which left us with short of seats, we were squashed in to fit extra tables, we literally could not move.When we are all eventually seated (after buying soft drinks at £3.95 each that were poured straight from Tesco bottles right in front of our eyes!) The manager asked if we wanted poppadoms, at which point my partner asked if they were complimentary and the manager responded "nothing in this life is free". 2 minutes later piles of poppadoms arrived complete with pickles on each table. We said we didnt ask for them and he just waved his hands. We moved on to order out food and the manager took the orders - he questioned what people were ordering and even responded "is that it" when a family member ordered a small meal. (How rude!)Eventually when the food arrived, which I must say my personal meal was very nice. My father noted that it was very dark in there and he couldnt see what he was eating so I asked for the lights to be adjusted. The manager told us that they did not work. I was amazed and he then got quite crossed and asked if we really wanted the lights brighter and went and turned up the dimmer switch! Hooray we could see each other and our meals!The next event sounds unreal but I swear it is completely true. A friend ordered Duck Korma, when it was delivered to his table it only had 4 pieces of meat in the sauce so he mentioned it to the Manager - to which his response was to pick up my friends spoon, he then leaned over my friends shoulder and cut his 4 chunks of meat in half and said "there you go 7 pieces now" !!!!They also brought too many Naans to our table and my brother told the manager that we did not order it so the manager replied that "as it was his birthday he could have it for free - complimentary"When we came to pay the bill, we requested that each couple paid separately as some had had starters etc and others hadnt, the manager grew quite cross and shouted that we were "bloody pains" He then continued to charge for the Poppadoms we didnt ask for, the naan that he said was complimentary and began to accuse some people of not paying when they very obviously had.We spent almost £500 pounds in there and were treated like muck on his shoe.Such a shame as a lot of the 28 people attending the meal were regular customers but they definitely will not be going back.Please consider very carefully if you are thinking of taking a large party there.

Visited restaurant for evening meal service food and drinks were excellent,only waited a few minutes for the drinks and the starter,owner was very attentive main meal soon arrived,lovely atmosphere during the meal Indian music was in the background.

Went to the Shaan but was full so took a awalk down to the Raj as I have never been in it. First impression was what am I doing in here but we stayed and the staff where like a comedy act it was so funny watching them and the food was the best I have had will be back the Shaan has nothing on this place you must try it.

Staff weren't the most attentive or friendliest when we visited but the food was delicious. I got 3 decent sized onion bhajis as a starter and my dad got some very tasty chicken tikka. The portions of our mains were absolutely huge, we did with just sharing 2 rices between the 3 of us and we had plenty of curry leftover. The balti, madras and rojan josh were all delicious and none were too spicy. Think the staffs attitude could've been better but I couldn't fault the food.

We have been to the Raj on numerous occasions, the service and food never disappoints. The sunday offer is also really good value for money, a really good selection of starters, mains and sides with some very different fair for a Indian/Bangladeshi Restaurant. The Sulca Salmon Starter is really good, certainly our preferred Indian in the area for eat in and take away.

Let me start my saying that the ordering, delivery and most of the food was excellent with the star being the Chicken Bakor Khana which was delicious.Big complaint about the onion bhajis which tasted as if they were old (?) with a very hard and floury coating which I found inedible. Also I had ordered two pappadams and received half of one in a brown paper bag - seriously half a pappadam!! I had to get the frying pan out and cook some more…..Disappointing as the rest of the meal was really nice.I tried to email them but (of course) it bounced..as many do!

Had visited Cheltenham for a family occasion & fancied a curry whilst driving home to east London. This restaurant Met our expectations & we really enjoyed our meal. Staff were attentive & helpful. Can recommend it.

the food is excellent good size portion the staff are brillent very welcoming clean fresh restaurant even if busy will find a space for you I eat a lot of there takeaways and am allways over the moon with there food allways taste nice i will recomand this restaurant to everyone i no i will allways use you

I was with my old buddy, booked the table for 7pm but we were eventually there around at 8.I have had the best KURZI LAMB (lamb shank) ever, tender and delicious. I highly recommend their lamb shank. Credit goes to the chef.My mate ordered a King prawn bhuna. The portions were really big, even though usually I eat a lot but I could not finish all. The keema naan was generously filled, very soft and mouthful.The atmosphere was warm, a perfect place to hangout with my mate. The staffs were friendly enough to make us comfortable.Well Done Raz. Thanks for having us and we are coming back again.
