This has all been refurbished (beautifully) and is under new management. I visited for afternoon tea this week, and it's a real gem. Fantastic cheese scone and cakes, and a really good cup of tea (and I'm fussy!). Its a great location - real character, quiet, good space outside and parking. The staff are lovely, nothing is too much trouble. Serving staff are wearing facemasks, and it all feels safe and very clean. And the cakes are just to die for! Also gluten-free and vegan are catered for. I'm hoping to go again soon for brunch.

What a fantastic gem of a place for a relaxing lovely experience...either morning coffee.. breakfast.. lunch or afternoon tea we had breakfast which was amazing and a great choice as well as traditional english there were pancakes, bagels omelettes and lots of tempting treats. Its definately worth a visit at Staplecross Shrub Centre The Candy Carriage Cafe formally Railway Tavern is newly beautifully refurbished within a 1930s railway carriage with a large decked seating area outside as well which is lovely on a sunny day. The carriage is under new management with excellent choice of homemade delights to tempt your taste buds with vegan and vegertarian options....afterwards to walk off those treats there are lots of little cabin shops to look around opposite selling some lovely wares as well as the garden centre a great find with plenty of onside parking..Open Tues to Sunday 9am till 5pm

Last minute leaving and birthday meal organised for a very large work booking Accepted the lunch booking for Friday 4th with an hours notice and allowed us to pre order as we’re always tight on time due to lunch hour inc travel time from the office Lovely chef, talked thru the order and verified it and the served up some delicious food Certainly doesn’t scrimp on servings! I had a Brie and Bacon roll, absolutely loaded, the quality is excellent, good value and will now include this in our monthly lunch visit and not always opt for a pub! Thanks for being so gracious with our late booking and great food

The railway carraige provides the perfect backdrop for good home cooked food while you wait. We were intending just to have coffee but the inviting smells of cooking led to us having a round of Gluten free bread and maramalade for my wife and a large sausage sandwich for me, both with drinks. Nice food, pleasant people serving you, and a great ambiance makes for a nice stay. Meals and alcohol are served but we were just wanting a snack.Whilst you are there look at the small craft shops, they have different items than mainstream shops.

We (a rowdy group of 11 closest friends) rocked up on foot to this lovely restaurant and had the best breakfast..ever! Even after we left the restaurant we were still talking about the food we had, atmosphere, staff and location, to the point that four of us returned the next day for another helping of breakfast before setting back off to Wimbledon. It was worth it. I will definitely be recommending this restaurant to friends and family here and back home in the States.

My wife and I decided we needed to pop out for lunch, she had a pretty much perfect BLT, bacon cooked to perfection, served up with possibly the best cheesy chips ever, I ordered my meal "off menu", as I didn't want a burger, had pulled pork and apple sauce in a bun instead, along with chips of course, followed by Banoffee cake and cream. Really great food, the people were so lovely, checking everything was satisfactory, what a great experience, we will definitely be going back.

My daughter and I had lunch in the tavern. We loved the place and the staff were friendly and helpful but the food was not acceptable. I ordered soup with bread and butter, but got inferior sliced bread and MARGARINE, which tasted awful. The waitress replaced it with toast and real butter at my request. The soup was only just okay. My daughter ordered a Caesar salad. The chicken was very dry, with bits of dry celery and boring iceberg lettuce, over-cooked bacon and inferior croutons. She also ordered broccoli and peas, and the broccoli was inedible. It was like jelly.

We’ve been here many times in the past four years and always get a warm welcome. The food is of a good cafe standard, cooked to order. We have always found the staff helpful and friendly and chef almost always comes out and checks things are ok. We were visiting garden centres, and the Railway Tavern was in the Staplecross one. We thought we'd eat, just to see. The food was excellent. I had the all-day breakfast, which was a nostalgic treat, despite being beautifully prepared, which they usually aren't. My wife had the roast beef and Yorkshire pudding, equally nostalgic and just as delightful. However, the presentation was modern and fresh, and mouth-wateringly attractive. Mouth-watering is good in a restaurant. When I had begged and pleaded for a while, I was given a mouthful, and it tasted as good as it looked. Well worth the trip on its own. You don't have to have a garden

Just had lunch AGAIN at the Railway Tavern. We use it often, and it never disappoints. It suits us as we can park the motorcycles right where we can keep an eye on them, and the food is simply delicious. This week, they have a special Hallowe'en menu that kids will absolutely love. I had the spooky sausages, served with mashed potato ghosts. Tasted as good as it looked

We live fairly locally in Battle and have tried many places in the area and this is the best. The sausages were pork and leek and you could actually see lovely pieces of fresh leek - not just flavoured! Bacon was delicious and they actually ask you how you like it cooked when you order! Eggs cooked perfectly, beans were quality - not cheapo watery ones, mushrooms fresh, not tinned and super fresh orange juice (they use Tropicana). This is not your usual "garden centre" add on - the setting is charming but they clearly are not relying on that - they are offering really great produce, freshly cooked.

Today we enjoyed another lovely full English breakfast sat outside in the sunshine on cast iron tables and chairs under large cantilever umbrellas. The outside part of the carriage diner is set up on nice decking with railings overlooking the garden centre. The breakfasts include quality sausage, bacon, perfectly fried egg (yoke still runny) hash brown, mushrooms, beans and tomatoes.. and this was just the standard breakfast, they have quite a lot of variety for smaller and very large appetites too including a Challenge Breakfast. The restaurant also offer other snack, sandwiches, Paninis etc as well as main meals including roast dinners, quality burgers and Steak. The staff are absolutely fabulous here, always chatty and very welcoming to dogs and children too. Our little dog was even brought some water and a complimentary sausage. There is indoor space inside the carriage itself to dine which is a great novelty factor. There are nice clean toilets available too. After your food you can then have a wander around the garden centre without moving the car.

This looked an interesting place so we popped in while in the area. It was pleasant enough but service was very slow which the staff put down to a very busy morning. There were many eating the various breakfasts and they looked good. Some of the tables were piled high with used plates and cups etc which none of the staff seemed interested in clearing. Disappointing.

Breakfast is always 1st class. The people are lovely, the place is gorgeous. It might have just been a one off kind of day and I'm only saying this with the best of intentions. We went for Sunday roast. It was presented in an unnecessarily fancy way, a bit like a gastro pub. A sort of stack in the middle of an out of the bag yorkshire on the bottom, with a piece of stuffing on top of that, the meat (small) on top of that, and another yorkshire on top of that with peas in it. Gravy spread around the square plate with half a potato in each corner. No other veg. Not good enough for £10 a pop. Expected better to be honest

Another great meal at this warm, cosy and inviting pub. We sat next to the wood burner which was nice and toasty. One of us had the Belly of Pork, my mouth is watering at the thought of it! One of us had the special which was bacon and onion suet pudding……You get a generous bowl of veg each and one of us had new potatoes and one had chips. Dessert was clotted cream rice pudding……Heaven! We are lucky that this is our local pub and it couldn’t be better! Cheers!
