What a delightful pub with such a warm welcome from all the staff. Rooms were very modern for such an old pub and exceptionally clean with everything we needed. Dinner by the log fire was excellent - service was very efficient and so friendly. We slept very well and enjoyed a delicious breakfast in the morning - I would highly recommend this pub, also great for a stopover as it is only a few miles from the M6.

The Hotel is run very efficiently with very Helpful and efficient staff. The Food was presented with big portions and very tasty. Would Highly recommend it.

Delicious ! We all had the Sunday lunch which was the best Sunday lunch we’ve had in a very, very long time. Everything was so tasty and beautifully presented. We all agreed that we must go back more often especially for Sunday lunch as I feel that it’s the best one we’ve had in this area of Cumbria. We all were tempted by the sticky toffee pudding. We don’t usually have desserts but this one read so well we had to try it and it did not disappoint. The staff were so friendly and we felt valued as a customer (another experience that has been lost in some of the local hospitality). Clean, cosy and charming place which I would definitely recommend to family and friends. Thank you

Friendly staff, good atmosphere and great food. Visited for dinner with my family and was met with a warm welcome and was given a table in the bar. It wasn't too busy but enough people to create a nice warm atmosphere. I would be happy to visit again.

Lovely home from home pub with super friendly staff. The tall chap behind the bar (I can’t remember his name - sorry!) made a big fuss of our dog, saying he had a Beagle too! There may have been 1 or 2 dog treats… The St Louis Rib was amazing, the beer was cold, the fire was hot, and the most relaxed we’ve been for a long time. Highly recommended and will stay next time we’re in the area.

I decided to treat my partner to an extra overnight stay while driving back from a 4 night stay in Loch Lomond Scotland and came across this lovely little pub. We had a lovely evening meal my partner thoroughly enjoyed her chicken and garlic Kiev and I had the scampi which was really nice and we shared a lovely sticky toffee pudding with ice cream. The breakfast in the morning was tasty and there was plenty of options on which size and amount of breakfast you wanted. The young man who owns/manages this pub was so polite and really helpful he certainly knows how to treat his guests 10/10.

Arrived after a couple of hours drive on a very February evening. We had a warm welcome and were promptly shown to our room which was clean, tidy and very comfortable, with a nice hospitality tray. We then had some lovely food besides the open fire, with much appreciated local ale and (less local) wine. Both the new member of staff being trained and her boss were just the right side of friendly without being over-the-top and intrusive. Breakfast in the morning was an excellent spread and fuelled us up for the rest of the day's travels. Thanks Queen's Head. We'll be back!

We stopped here for a meal at short notice. What a find! The food was excellent, sirloin steak cooked to perfection and excellent trimmings, steak and ale pie very good, flavoursome and tender. A great pint of Cumbria Way too. Then to find out the new owners had only been in for 8 days, I am sure they are destined for a great business. Will definitely come back

It was only a short drive from our destinations of Pooley Bridge, Ullswater and Delamain House. Ample parking at the rear. Our room was small and basic (it's a 17th century inn) but the easterly view over rolling fields, with sheep and rabbits grazing, was very restful. Meals supposed to be good, but we did not eat there.

We booked in advance and had to be assertive to get noticed in the bar enough to be seated. The menu is a bit limited. We had the chicken skewers to start which had never been on a skewer. The main courses were good. Service was a bit haphazard and we had to go to the bar so we could pay the bill. We just couldn’t get staff to come to the table. I’d say the pub is work in progress.

I don't really know what the negative reviews on here are about - Tirril is a small, Cumbrian Village set in Gods Own Country (The English Lake District) - not the Cotswolds, Chilterns, Stratford on Avon, Rolling Fields of Kent or the South Coast Rivierra - Thank Heavens. I called in on spec after a couple of hard days on the Cumbrian Fells - Walking, Climbing, Wild Water Swimming and Wildlife Watching. I got exactly what was advertised - a decent Room, great Breakfast, Good Ale and a warm welcome/friendly service. Got talking to a couple of Locals - lovely. Sat listening to some visitors from afar -Pretty Obnoxious/Presumptuous/Rude/Impatient. I am planning to visit again later in the year.

I was looking for a pub for traditional food and beverage whilst on holiday in the area.Having read past and present reviews i decided to give the place a try what with new management in place. This is a 300 plus year old pub and as such looks like a 300 year old pub so don't expect plush and posh. If your looking for that then turn around. On the other hand if your after a traditional pub then walk right in. It's old, quirky but clean and tidy.On arrival the young staff were welcoming and helpful and allowed us to choose where we wanted to sit and gave us a brief rundown of covid requirements and specials. This is when we met the manager. He is very chatty, welcoming and keen to listen as he is eager to change the past negative comments from the previous owners/management.There was a good choice of main and kids food at the area prices. The food was very hot and to a good standard, not amazing but I was not disappointed in what we received. There was 4 empty plates let me put it that way. The manager was always around and speaking to everyone, keen to listen to the holiday makers and the locals. He clearly wants to move this place forward. Its clear to see the staff are still a bit rough round the edges and getting trained on the job but I can't be negative about that.Place looks like it will do well under the current management. All I can say is give this place a chance even if you have been before.

My partner and I stayed here for a full week with bed and breakfast as it was a great base for exploring the lake district and as a 300 year old Inn had bags of character. On arrival it was obvious that all the staff were new and and had little experience. It transpired that the pub had only been taken over by new management 2 weeks earlier. Our first evening and breakfast in the restaurant were fairly shambolic. Hence the 3 star review. However, there was a slow but steady improvement as the week went on and I could easily up this to 4 or 5 given another month or so. Well done to Matt, the new manager and Izzy and Ben for their perseverance. Please do not let this put you off. The rooms were clean and charmingly quaint and the food was consistantly of a high quality and well presented. The staff, although inexperienced. Were constantly polite and the location is perfect being within short distance of all the tourist hotshots but allowing for a quiet base to escape to.I wish Matt and his team the best of luck in their continued improvement!

It used to be a lovely atmosphere, warm and friendly, caring staff, not anymore, surly staff, the main man bragging about his time in Ibiza, a whining dog, not a customers dog l should point out, cut down menu, only one photocopied menu per table, food plonked on the table. We had travelled up from Norwich staying in a local ABnB and chose this pub because of reviews. We arrived and it was chaotic, there had been an electric failure and gas problems affecting meal and drinks throughout the day; a message had been sent but we didn't receive it till later. We accept that unforeseen events such as this do occur, so our issues are not just with the poor standard of food that was 'eventually' served, but Staff standards. As a retired couple, we do not expect to be greeted with 'Everything OK Guys', and referred to as 'guys' each time she came to see us. The food was poor, even in the circumstances, no apologies nor price reduction offered; bar staff didn't seem to understand what a spritzer was or a traditional shandy. This was particularly evident with a female member of staff. Standards are standards and if this pub expects to get good reviews it had better start ensuring the basics are in place, and that is Staff training.

We were recommended this pub on the basis of the reputation of the previous owners and we horrified by the ineptitude of the staff. We booked a table for 7:45pm on Monday 28th June as we wanted to eat local having travelled from Nottingham and just needed some food. We arrived on time and were not shown to a table and just advised to sit where we liked. The bar area was full and it was a little cool to sit outside but it was even cooler inside, like sitting in a morgue! We took a table in the rear of the pub and waited and waited patiently to be served. We were not offered a drink or the menu. I had to go up to the bar and ask for service (COVID roles state it should be table service) but after twenty minutes of no contact we felt it expedient to remind them that we here and waiting. Eventually the young man behind the bar came to take our order for drinks, however when we asked what lager they had on draught he looked blank and again had to go the bar to see what was available as he had no clue. When he brought the drinks over he only brought a pint whereas we had ordered a pint and a half pint. He then cam back with the drink and took our meal order which was two scampi and chips, which we ordered as this was the least difficult option for them to provide as we had no confidence in ordering anything more expensive. The food duly arrived after a further 20 minutes having collared the young lady to ascertain where it was. The food duly arrived hot but was tasteless, it was very noticeable the number of tables where people were not receiving any attention and looking rather forlorn. We then paid a second visit for a beer and a packet of crisps in the outside area, on the assumption it could not be any worse - wrong. The music was blaring out across the carpark and outdoor seating area and to my absolute surprise they did not have a single packet of crisps in the pub. Again there was no table service so had to go into the pub and wait at the bar, until the lady serving decided to finish her phone call regarding her shopping etc.Do not bother visiting unless you wish to waste your time and money.

Called for drinks and was overcharged for a medium glass of wine. Once challenged i was told the a 175ml glass was same price as 250ml ! According to management it was stock they had taken over from previous owners! We booked a meal for sunday Fathers Day. We were hustled into a very dark corner in the tiny bar as we had a do. We were not impressed and asked to be moved. We were put into main restaurant on two different height tables for our group of 5. We ordered food which was very lack lustre, roasts warm with frozen veg and roasties that had obviosly been around a while as they were rock hard. No extra yorkshire puddings to order.Again the bill was over, we had been charged for 2 extra squash drinks. And the wine was still overpriced. We were regular visitors in the past to this lovely pub, having had delicious meals and good service, but this will be our last.

After having stayed here two years ago and been very pleased with our overnight stay decided to visit again but what a a shambles as it was explained that the new managers had only taken over three days before. On making the reservation was told there was no need to book an evening meal as they kept tables available for guests but when asked on meal times were informed that we had to eat before 6-30 as they had other bookings and when the meal arrived it was shall we say not good the pie obviously from the microwave was extra hot but the veg and chips warm, expecting the breakfast to be of a better standard it was even more disappointing the bacon had obviously been reheated and was dry and tough and then to cap it all fruit juice was a carton with a straw so definitely avoid this establishment.

We ordered fish and chips and mushy peas. The food was delivered quickly. Upon arrival I could see the fish had excess oil on it. The batter was a beer batter and crispy on the outside but mushy on the inside. The fish had been cooked ftom frozen as it was was wet. The chips were just cooked. The mushy peas had had the life mashed out of them and they contained mint. The tartare sauce was ok. Possibly the worst fish and chips we’ve eaten. To top it off the my wife’s Sauvignon blanc was like vinegar. The staff were having a discussion in the bar area which should have been Discussed behind closed doors. They asked us what it was like and they blamed it on that fact they were new managers. Surely if you are making a new start you should be setting high standards. Very disappointed ☹️

Visited the Queens this week for a family meal. I'll stary with staff ladies who served us were both professional and as accommodating as was possible. Now to the food upon recieving the menu I was disappointed with the lack of choice and No more home made/sourced pies. This was the reason we return every year to the Queens. Upon asking had the menu changed and pies omitted I was told the Queens is under new management from Nov 2020. The option I chose was a chicken/mushroom pie which was both watery and lacking chicken. My daughters chicken breast was dry and tough. My wife seemed to enjoy the sea bass she ordered. Desert was also not great as my daughters brownie could of substituted as a house brick it was that hard. This was taken off the final bill upon request. Saddens me to say that was once as fine warm and special dining experience with a comprehensive menu is no more. Anyone who are expecting the old Queens pre Covid be aware of the changes.

Being back up in the Lakes, we were very much looking forward to another visit to one of our favourite places to eat. How very disappointed we were to arrive to an almost empty place. We then discovered the pub had changed hands back in November 2020! We were greeted with a sarcastic joke from I presume the new landlord, which personally I didn’t appreciate after I had made the effort to ring and ask for our booking to be put back a little and which he said was no problem! Complete change of menu and no delicious pies! We thought prices were a little on the high side-£17 for vegetable lasagne (2 nights earlier we had paid £12.50!). My husband ordered pie and mash, myself sea bass and our daughter grilled chicken breast. We did ask for a smaller portion of fish and chips but this couldn’t be done? My meal was nice, pie filling lacking in chicken and watery daughters dry so she was offered gravy too.To finish desserts- chocolate brownie was unfortunately like a brick and inedible. Sadly, we’ll be finding another eatery and were highly disappointed in how this once lovely, bustling little place is no more. I hope it does make some much needed changes moving forward and creates an atmosphere which is sadly lacking, and great food once more.

Very good food and the gentleman serving was lovely. However we booked for 4 including a high chair, when we arrived the lady said the high chair was taken. She then said she thought the people who had the high chair was us. I feel strongly she should have checked the name of the booking and made sure, however sadly this wasnt the case. She asked me to go and sit at the table where the high chair was (the family hadn't yet sat at the table) when I did get the high chair, the family got very angry with me for taking their high chair (which they had every right to be angry). The woman found another high chair after saying there was only one and the situation was resolved, although it wasn't resolved in our eyes. It felt very unprofessional and unorganised by the lady and sadly it put us off and if it wasn't for me insisting we stay, my husband was ready to leave. We moved to the front away from the family. But we didn't get an apology from the woman for the mix up which I feel we should have. So should the other family. We enjoyed our meal and like i said the man was great, so easy to talk to and great customer service skills. Will definitely return as its our local. Although we will make sure the high chair situation is sorted! I strongly think they should have more than 1 high chair with it being a family pub in the lakes. But food was great and the gentleman was a true gent and like. I said great customer service skills.

As a family, the six of us went into this restaurant in good, happy holiday spirits, when we walked out an hour later we were all severely depressed. I don’t think I have ever been into a restaurant with such a miserable, unhelpful and rude landlord and, presumably, landlady. My elderly Mum was sat on a chair she did not find comfortable, so we swapped it for another one, the landlady gave us daggers and made such a fuss about how the chair would now have to be cleaned......it’s not that hard love to clean one chair, especially the way you did it!!! One of us had the roast beef, she couldn’t eat it, she couldn’t even cut it, it was too tough and mainly gristle, when the plates were collected, she did mention this, her complaint was not even acknowledged. But worst of all, Mr rude pub landlord, you do not roll your eyes at your customers when they do not wish to order a dessert, the reason I did not have a dessert is because I have quite serious food allergies. It was undoubtedly the most miserable restaurant I, and my family, have ever eaten in, needless to say, we shall never return. I can’t make up my mind if “dark and dingy” best describes the pub......or its landlord and landlady.

The landlord seems determined to run his business into the ground. A surly man with zero charm who appears to resent the few customers he has and goes out of his way to make them feel uncomfortable. He also makes up the law on Covid as he goes along. We put up with his complaint that his half empty pub was ‘rammed’ to explain his tardy service but when he told us we could not move chairs in order to sit down, we left. Never to return. Avoid like the plague. It’ll soon close down anyway.

The pub was quiet as it was fairly late but luckily they were still serving food. There was great service from the couple behind the bar, who were friendly and professional. We ordered a burger and the fish and chips, and both of us agreed they were the best we'd had. Every chip was crispy on the outside and fluffy in the middle.Very cosy and traditional inside with a good selection of Robinson beers, and others. The Helles lager was nice - refreshing as a lager should be but not uncomfortably gassy like a lot of the big brands.Shame we're only here on holiday as I'm sure we'd be back many times.

It was fantastic! I am a real foodie and this pie ( Chicken and Tarragon ) is honestly the BEST I’ve ever eaten - the pastry was crisp all the way through - no soggy bottom to be found!! Thank you to all the staff for a safe and wonderful evening

Midweek dinner. Never visited this pub before. Arrived to find a busy, cosy bar, with a real fire going, which we sat next to. Quite an extensive menu with an excellent selection of special pies. Good atmosphere throughout. Attentive staff. Robinsons beer. What more is required?! Will definitely visit again.

Tried to go on Saturday night but they were fully booked so went on Sunday instead with four friends. The pub was extremely quiet with just ourselves in the dining area and a couple of people in the bar area. Plenty of room to sit around big tables with comfy chairs. It is quaint inside, warm and welcoming on a rainy night. The bar staff were very helpful and gave us some beer to sample to help us decide which one to have. We all ordered pies after reading reviews and we were not disappointed. Lots of choice and they came with mash or chips. I opted for half mash and half chips. The meal was served quickly and everything was well cooked and hot. We all enjoyed our choices and would definitely return. The staff were very friendly and helpful. Can highly recommend.

We arrived early and opted to eat in the bar, which was a lovely old room with a log fire and beams. The food was delicious: the chicken was moist, tasty and tender, the cheese board had a balanced selection of local cheeses (the brie style one was ripe enough to run off the board - yum) and the house merlot was very drinkable. And the staff were friendly and helpful. You really can't ask for much more.

We had a meal in the pub last night whilst we were spending the weekend with family in nearby rented accomodation. The restaurant was fully booked but we were found a table in the bar where the same menu is used. There was a good choice of food available. Our party of 4 chose the salmon, lamb chops and the local meat pies as main courses. For pudding we ordered chocolate sponge, lemon cheesecake & Eton messAll produce seemed of high quality. Presentation was good and it was certainly all tasty!!Service was friendly & efficient. There was an casual ambience with locals/regulars in attendance and the cost was as expected - £89 for 2 courses for 4 including drinksWe would definitely eat here again if in the area and would recommend to others

Cold and tired inside and the food was appalling. I couldn’t eat the lasagne, it was swimming in grease and obviously microwaved. My fathers sirloin was incredibly poor quality and next to impossible to cut even with a steak knife. And the pie my mum ordered was nothing like the one promised on the menu, in gag we think it may have been beef instead of lamb but who knows as the meat was so bland. We should have said something but it was that awful we just wanted to pay and get out.

We visited The Queen’s Head following a trip advisor recommendation and were not disappointed! The pies were superb - so much so that we went back again and even bought some pies to take home! Delicious! Loved the Moroccan Lamb with apricots - full of flavour and the steak and kidney, all served with fresh vegetables and gravy! Fab! The pub was charming and has a farm shop attached selling the pies! Now plan to order on line! Two great visits! Thankyou to the staff at The Queen’s Head

We live local so eat here often especially when we have guests, who are really impressed and complimentary. They have a very extensive menu for all tastes, with good sized portions. They also do pie and a pint or curry and a pint nights, which are very good value for money. They also sell local ales which are very good. It's a pub with character, the old exposed beams, the original big open fire place which is used in the cooler weather making a very cosy effect. They can cater for quite a lot of people due to the 3 dining rooms going down from the bar, one behind the bar and in the bar. Staff are very friendly and helpful. We can always guarantee a good meal at a good price.

Stopped in for dinner, having been not too thrilled with offerings in Pooley Bridge. We are glad we did. It was steak night so we both opted for the special which included a drink. We had to wait a bit for our food order to be taken but it came in good time. The minted gravy with the lamb was delicious. I thought a small serving of vegetables on the plate (instead of having to order as an extra) would have been welcomed. Pleasant service.

Visited the Queen's Head Inn 2 nights ago while on a camping trip to Pooley Bridge. It was highly recommended by a work colleague who lives nearby. It certainly lived up to what we were hoping for. Firstly, I shall point out that I am highly critical of any food dish I pay for and for thus reason there are dozens of establishments I would not go back or even waste my time on a review. This is not one of them. From the moment we arrived, we were greeted with a warm welcome at the rear of the Inn where there is ample parking space and a lovely outside covered dining area which we opted for as it was a beautiful hot evening. We got our drinks and then given our menu's by a lovely woman who I found to have the upmost professionalism I have encountered in any Inn we have visited. It was a struggle to choose from the menu as every dish sounded delicious from the descriptions. After a little wait (which I don't mind because it tells me the food is being cooked from fresh) the meals arrived all at the same time. At this point the conversation went dead. The food was that good we were so immersed in our enjoyment to even consider making eye contact with one another. The waiting service by the young male was amazing, polite and attentive but not in your face. We felt that nothing would be a problem if we asked. Even the draft lager was a fantastic pint and I normally don't touch Fosters. The bill at the end was the icing on the cake. Considering the quality of the food, the high level of service and the quaint Inn that the Queen's Head is, it was worth every penny. We will definitely be back.

I have stayed at this friendly hotel for quite a few months now, the food, value for money, staff and of course the beer are all fabulous. The menu is varied and I’ve never had a meal that I wasn’t pleased with regardless of season or how busy they were - I’d personally recommend smoked mackerel pate, Tapas (Thurs only), sirloin steak with Stilton med/rare, any of their soups and I couldn’t leave out their sticky toffee pudding the best I’ve ever tasted. The staff are all tentative and helpful and go above and beyond the call of duty, all are locals so have a good knowledge of the area and are able to suggest places to go/see, just in case your stuck for choice in this beautiful area of England. The locals are also friendly and welcoming. Although I’m here on business I wouldn’t hesitate to come back with my family or highly recommend to a friend.

One Saturday, walked here from the Sockbridge Mill B&B; (walk highly recommended), arrived here around 5.30 pm feeling lucky to have a table. Lovely atmosphere and friendly staff. After a shared starter of tempura prawns (perfect batter), wife had a game pie, I had duck breast and mash. Following this, apple/blackcurrant pie and custard. A bit of a wait to pay the bill, but all courses very prompt. Great food and excellent value. Will be back when we're in this area.

Service was brilliant, the waiters at the table where lovely, however the food was very over priced for what you got on your plate. Sadly the 7 of us where left disappointed with what we had all having different meals. Wouldn’t return for a family meal but would go back for a drink and some chips. They need to lower there prices or increase the quality of food and the portion size to meet the price they have. Very disappointing!

For me (& many others) the best pub grub in the Pooley Bridge area. A little further but a lot better than the gaggle of pubs in Pooley who get enough punters every night so they don’t need to care. You get a v friendly welcome, good service and a range of home cooked food - try the home made pies, genius! Well worth a visit.

A friendly atmosphere with a good choice of food. Our annual trip to the Lakes would normally involve a different pub each evening but this was so good we returned for the next two evenings. The meals were excellent and good value. Between us we sampled most of the pies and none disappointed. The vegetables were plentiful and cooked to perfection. The 'Pie Night' and the 'Steak Night' in effect meant that the drink was free and the Cumbrian Ale was good.

Stayed here for one night as a last minute break, this was one of only a few places left available in the lakes area at the time,at 1st i thought it was gonna be too far out of the way for anything but im so pleased we stayed there.
