Previously gave a 5 star rating, however, booked a table for 6 at 8.00 pm for my Granddaughters birthday. Upon arrival just before 8.00 pm I gave my name and booking details to the staff behind the bar. They said the kitchen was closed and there was no such booking. I gave my phone number when booking, then why did they not phone to give advance notice that they were closing the kitchen early? My Granddaughters birthday, my other three Granddaughters, my wife and my night totally ruined, by a business that does not honour a booking. Book a table at your peril !!!!!!!

The Homemade Scouse was disgusting. It was just Bisto gravy with vegetables and chewy, dry beef. This region prides itself on a good pan of Scouse, but this one was uneatable. Shameful and embarrassing serving that

it's not bad, but... there are no (or there are so few that I couldn't find) real ales. It is unthinkable that such a pub would not have traditional English beer. The girls behind the bar are too dressed up, there are nice-looking girles but there is no comfortable atmosphere there

The girls were constantly checking if we needed anything and brought our drinks over without asking. It’s a beautiful traditional pub with very friendly staff and spotlessly clean. We visited lunch time on Valentine’s Day 2024. Expected it to be far more busy than what it was ( but only about 25% full) Despite this had to wait 50 minutes for the meal as the chef had to deal with a delivery and anyone arriving after us was told the had to stop serving food as the chef had to deal with this delivery. It was a cheap meal (2 for £14) but even so, there was absolutely no taste to our meal. And I had a Madras curry. Not a sign of any spices it was more of a gravy. Would I return? No. I would rather spend a bit more) Despite it being a cheap meal, there was no taste. I write this here as at no time was I asked by the server if everything was ok. The young lady was lovely and I would hate her to think it was her fault. Will come back for a drink but not the food. John

I'm sharing my total disappointment with this pub. I booked a meal for 14 people earlier last week for the 9th of December at 1pm. I was informed that they had disabled access at the side as 1 person is in a motorised wheelchair which is quite heavy. I stressed how important it was to have disabled access. I informed everyone involved as a couple were coming quite a distance. I Receive a call this afternoon to explain that they have no disabled access or disabled toilets. I've now been left trying to accommodate 14 people for a Christmas lunch. Why would you say you have this when it's clear you don't? I really don't understand this at all. Very disappointed

Went here for Lunch with my wife yesterday and had a 5-star experience. I am someone who rarely posts reviews, because I think they should be reserved for either substandard or great/fantastic. Most places offer a reasonable experience, which you would expect as standard, hence I have chosen to make an exception here and post a review because it was a much better experience than the average. There were two waiting staff and both could not be more friendly and attentive, but not overbearing. They also checked after each course to make sure we were happy with the food. We had the 3 for two starters of chicken goujons, cola spare ribs and chicken liver pate, all were very delicious. I had the rump steak done medium, and it was perfectly cooked and very tender, with only the scantiest bit of waste fat and now when most restaurants are charging over £20 for the same meal, then £13.95 is great value indeed. My wife had the gammon with egg and pineapple (didn't have to choose). She said this was very good as well. I had the lemon meringue pie with cream, which was really tasty and homemade. When I ordered the dessert, I said I would like coffee but after the pudding. It was the little extra thought that makes all the difference, when the waiter, as he was clearing another table, asked "shall I get your coffee now". I have been in many places, where you have to seek out waiting staff to prompt them to bring something that you have ordered for a later time. If I had gone to one of the more upmarket gastro pubs, and paid another £20/30 I would still have been happy with the meal.

The 1 star is for the staff as they are trying their best here without management guiding them! We came here on the 18th January we booked in advance but we were not informed they had "a trainee chef" we were shown to out table and the poor young lad told us the menu was limited my daughter ordered the fish and chips and I ordered the ham baguette with chips about 30 minuets later they come out and tell me they had no ham!! Bearing in mind i ordered something before the ham baguette but was told o couldnt have that so chose a simple baguette with ham easy right?? Wrong Another 20 minutes later they brought out our food my daughters fish was more like a fish finger with overcooked batter and the mushy peas were in a tiny ramekin that you would put ketchup or mayo in! My baguette came out and we'll I couldn't believe it the baguette was one of them you bake at home yourself but they didn't bake it!! They just cut it open and put cheese on it! ( you couldn't write it) I mean how can you get a cheese baguette so wrong ( even my husband can make a cheese baguette) We sent them back and they then sent out a senior member of staff who gave us free drink and removed the food from our bill! It's a shame this pub has lost its major as it was one of the good ones in the area. I don't think I will be returning anytime soon...

Bear with me but we feel we need to post this honest review of our experience on Christmas Day, and since at The Queens Arms Oxton... For this first time ever, we decided to have dinner out for Christmas Day, and the first time ever as a wider family. This was even more important this year as it was the first Christmas since my Husband’s Mum passed away so we wanted to ensure as many of both families were together on what should be a nice day for us all. We have been regular visitors of The Queens over the years, always serving decent food with a good atmosphere. We originally made our booking earlier in the year with plenty of notice for a table of 8 people at 3pm. We were all really looking forward to the afternoon / evening with some good food and company. Everyone arrived at 3pm sharp to an extremely busy pub to be told that there is currently a delay of around 30 mins – which although it was disappointing it gave us chance to have a drink at the bar before we sat at the table so we didn’t mind, especially given how busy and stressed the staff looked when we got there. 30/45 minutes passed and there was still no sign of any tables being cleared or ready in the restaurant area. At one point we could see guests who had finished their meals bringing in bags full of presents from their cars to open at their tables. Fair enough, it’s a family day and nothing to do with the other guests who were trying to enjoy Christmas, but it was very clear from early on that guests weren’t being told to leave their tables after a certain time ready for the next booking(s) once they had finished their meals / drinks – even just encourage guests to move to the bar area so the next sittings can take place. Around 3:45pm (45 minutes after our booking), we asked a man who was collecting glasses whether there was any update as to when our table would be ready, little did we know that he didn’t even work there as he was doing The Queens a favour in helping collect empty glasses (and even he looked stressed). He went and got one of the members of staff who we believe was handling the Christmas bookings. We asked her how soon our table would be ready to which she responded with a shrug of her shoulders ‘I really don’t know and can't tell you when, I can set you up here in the bar if you really want that?!’ – again seemingly very stressed and then walked off. We of course declined as there was nowhere for any of us to sit, including our 3-year-old and my father-in-law who is in his 70’s. We then found out through speaking to other people in the pub who were also as annoyed as us that the pub clearly continued to add more sittings in the run up to xmas, which they clearly couldn’t cope with. We then found out that a table not far from us were waiting almost 3 hours for their food, so started asking again what was going on, after they had told us they were supposed to sit down at 1pm and now it was almost 4pm. After being told when we arrived that they were 30mins behind, we were then told around 5pm that there were actually 6 families in front of us still waiting for a table so it would be at least another 3-4 hours at least before we could even sit down, plus the food wouldn’t be ready for ‘a long time’ even after we sat down. Another family who were behind us (booked in at 3:15) were told four hours at 5pm. Meaning the earliest our family would sit down for Christmas dinner would have been 8/9pm at night – again with a toddler. Eventually, after a very upset member of staff who told us there was nothing they could do as they had horrendous staffing issues with managers having to cook the food in the absence of chefs (on Christmas Day), at this stage, we weren’t only concerned about how long we were having to wait for our table / booking but also the quality of what the food would be like. We had no choice but to leave, with no plan B and of course no food in the house suitable for Christmas dinner. We told the staff member who was increasingly stressed and to be fair all’s she did was apologise but there was nothing that could be done. She was so stressed she burst into tears and we couldn’t believe how badly organised it was, we’ve been to the Queens so many times, the food was great and we really did have high hopes for Christmas dinner, expecting it to be like clockwork. We couldn’t be more wrong. At this stage, we had finally had enough and requested our deposit back and to be reimbursed for the drinks that we wouldn’t have necessarily purchased if it wasn’t for the delays. The member of staff said she would need to go and speak to the manager regarding this. So why was the manager hiding in the kitchen and not facing the angry / disappointed customers regarding the issues and delays? He/she didn’t and wouldn’t come out once and will not contact us since. To be fair, we received our deposit back and money for the drinks we had purchased without a fuss, but I don’t think it was quite understood quite how much our’s and many other families’ entire Christmas Days were completely ruined – and it’s still so upsetting. Whoever organised the Christmas schedule at the pub, made so many of their team and the customers stressed and upset on what’s usually the best day of the year, needs to be aware of this. You got greedy and added too many sittings for your team to cope with, allowed far too many people in the bar who were coming just for drinks, didn’t even have the pre-ordered food prepared and were just completely an embarrassment. After spending an hour calling every pub/restaurant on the Wirral, it was The Armadillo who saved the day and thankfully could offer us a table at 7:30pm for us to at least get something to eat, and it was lovely. After a few days, we contacted the Queens asking what would be done for the families who were affected on Christmas Day. After our own prompting, we were invited back for a meal and drinks as a means of compensation and apology for the issues which we experienced. This was booked in for 4pm yesterday (Sunday 8th Jan), however to our complete surprise we were contacted yesterday morning and told that our booking has been cancelled due to the fact that whatever chef is now working there, was now too ill and the kitchen needed to close. We give up and have told them we will not be returning. What should have been a special family meal has just been nothing but stress from start to finish. We also asked yesterday morning that the manager contact us directly as they have not contacted us what so ever, we’re still waiting and I don’t think that will ever happen. I will say, the member of staff who was in tears on Christmas Day, and who has corresponded with us since has been nothing but apologetic and I won’t name her as she knows who she is. She has been a real help, and has really tried but has explained herself it’s not her doing and I do think she is totally stressed and helpless. This is another reason we’ve been doubting posting anything, but after yesterday there’s just no excusing it. We were in two minds for a while about posting this, let’s face it, compared to the tragic events that happened at The Lighthouse on Christmas Eve, this is absolutely no comparison. But we’re honestly gutted about this and people should be made aware, so please share, we will never eat in this pub again or recommend it to anyone. Bring on next Christmas and let’s hope The Queens decide never to open on Christmas Day again, for the sake of all of us!

Not great for me unfortunately. No real ale on offer and the Guinness wasn’t really up to scratch either. Lacked atmosphere. I’m told the food is good so maybe I’ll try another time when I’m designated driver.

Went for lunch, ordered fish and chips on the two for twelve menu. The fish was very small compared with previous experience and the batter was very soggy and no tartare sauce. Mayonnaise came too late.

Very busy pub and only had 2 young girls that seemed to be running the bar and sorting meals too. There was a limited menu on, so we ordered some chips...they were ace. Not much choice for bitter drinkers...John Smith's...the other ale was not on. Lots of lagers to choose from.

Staff are marvelous, friendly, very helpfull but there's zero atmosphere. Cold and 'beige',not somewhere to spend a few hours having a pint and relax.pity, because the staff really are marvelous but the decor, whilst very clean just totaly lacks warmth and atmosphere.

Great location and area for an evening out. The queen's has a small area to dine in. The staff are always very pleasent but look to be very busy at times. We where served late as the kitchen had some issues with staffing but.. The food was very good, great portions and real quality food. The staff recognise the wait and offered freebies which was a real bonus. I'd go back.

Absolutely terrible! Sat down to be told there maybe a short wait for food, after 20 minutes our drinks arrive barely warm coffee and a pot of tea. I ordered the chicken Caesar salad and my partner ordered a bowl of scouse. After 55 minutes of waiting and no explanation or apology the food came out, the scouse to be fair was ok just lacking and kind of seasoning but the Caesar salad was in my opinion appalling!! The chicken was dry and barely warm, no cheese at all basically in the bowl was lettuce a drizzle of sauce a few lardons of bacon and deep fried crotons which tasted of pure oil!. After 5 minutes of eating a member of staff swung her head round a pillar to ask ‘everything ok’ not even waiting for a response. Finished the so called food and couldn’t get ourselves out any quicker, paid at the bar no mention or asked was everything ok?. Definitely will not be back and strongly recommend passing this establishment while driving or walking buy as they are taking pre-bookings for Christmas and it was more suited for last night’s Halloween special to be honest!!.
