Quayside in Scarborough

I had seen recommendations for gluten free, and glad to see a notice in the shop window. The gentleman serving had great knowledge of gluten free and confirmed the separate fryer and gluten free batter. I had a small gluten free fish and chips, and hubby had a normal fishcake, battered sausage and chips. Both meals tasted great, portion size was generous and we both enjoyed our takeaway meal, eating in the sunshine on the pier. The gentleman serving was great, he was all alone and yet had complete control of all the orders he was taking, in an efficient and friendly way. He was a credit to the Quayside. When next in Whitby we would have no hesitation in returning for a great meal and would totally recommend.

Me and my partner went for dinner here on a Saturday night after reading the menu outside earlier in the day and being pleasantly surprised to see several tasty sounding vegan options on the menu. When we arrived we had to sit for a long time before anyone even came over to ask us if we wanted any drinks even though the restaurant wasn't even half full. During the time we had been waiting I spotted some small print at the bottom of the menu which stated that all the food was cooked in beef dripping. I thought that this couldn't possibly mean the items labeled as vegan but when the member of staff finally come over to take our order I thought I better double check this. At this point the waiter told us that in fact even the items labeled as 'vegan' are cooked in beef dripping. After wasting our time with false advertising we left as fast as we could. I am still shocked that a restaurant such as this can flat out mislead their customers by advertising items as vegan when they can't even be classed as vegetarian let alone vegan!! Do yourself a favour and avoid this place.

Walked in for a table and seated right away even though it is Easter Sunday! Excellent choice. Food was red hot and freshly cooked. One haddock and chips regular, one GF haddock and chips regular, one scampi and chips and one Haddock Yorkshire special. Staff were polite and obliging and all areas were clean and well kept. Would recommend. We would return again on our next visit to Whitby.

Amazing fish and chips the only place I eat fish as its fresh and has a proper consistency deserts to die for fresh gelato and alternatives to dairy are avaliable so they're inclusive ,food fresh and served food with in 15 of sitting and ordering staff very officiat and willing to help you .

Solo he estado aquí para sacar pescado y patatas fritas. Siempre he venido aquí, por lo general, me siento, pero tenía perros y estaba fuera para mi cumpleaños y nunca he tenido algo tan asqueroso en mi vida. Las patatas fritas eran todas duras como rocas ni una blanda y solo puedo describirlas como los calentamientos de ayer, pero eso sería hacer ver que eran mejores de lo que eran y creo que el bacalao nadó fuera de la masa mientras lo estaban cocinando como si yo pusiera el mío y mis socios juntos todavía no podía clasificarlo como un bacalao pequeño. Impactante, nunca volveré. Para una tienda de patatas fritas y pescado me disgusta que haya ido a la papelera. Los perros comieron salchichas cada uno, así que no hay quejas. Qué desperdicio de 25 libras.

I am a Whitby ‘native’ and quayside ( owned by fuscos) has always been the best fish and chips in my mind. Service here was lovely but unfortunately the fish and chips were not as good as I used to experience years ago. I used to love their crinkle cut, dripping fried chips, but the ones I had yesterday seemed like frozen chips straight out of a freezer bag. The fish was ok but the batter was not crispy and very disappointing. It was not worth the price .

As a family of 9 plus a toddler, we were catered for quite late in the day. Service was excellent and the food delicious. 5 star service

In all the years of visiting Whitby we had never been to the Quayside, this was remedied recently and I was really impressed. We visited for takeaway as a family of five, three rounds of haddock and chips, steak pie and chips and chicken nuggets and chips. The Haddock was excellent, a huge piece of fish that was really thick and had the skin on, it was cooked to perfection, my only gripe was the batter could have been a bit thicker but that is my taste. Chips were excellent and the server offered to let me put on my own salt and vinegar. My son had the steak pie and he said it was amazing, it looked amazing and was full of big chunks of meat. We will be back again. Would have been a 5 but for the batter but don't let that put you off.

We had a great fish and chip lunch here- the fish was really fresh in a lovely batter. Portions were generous and good value. The restaurant is beautifully and tastefully decorated - even the washrooms and beautiful staircase to them are spotlessly clean and nicely decorated. Service was fast and efficient. We would definitely recommend and would happily eat here again.

Quayside is our go-to fish and chip shop in Whitby . Never mind the famous Magpie cafe where you’ll have to queue and the prices are higher instead try the Quayside we feel it is far better . The fish and chips are cooked to order so always lovely and hot . The fish batter is crisp and the chips are light & fluffy inside. Highly recommend!

Brilliant fish and chips I think they where the best I ever had very friendly staff we had ours as a takeaway and eat them in our motor home looking over the harbour was the high light of our day in Whitby very clean establishment and very smartly dressed staff

We ate inside the Quayside which doesn’t feel like a fish and chip restaurant - nice decor like a restaurant. Staff were very slow taking orders but food was good. I had the steak pie (which was from a local butcher) with gravy and chips which was good and a large portion but £16+ PS. No idea what Irish Curry Sauce is on the menu…

Its the easiest of diets when your looking for food venders who cater for Gluten free but my partner and I found Quaryside totally by chance, we didn't mind the wait outside although somewhere to sit just inside the doorway would of been helpful as trying to hold myself up on walking sticks is never the easiest when standing still. Inside we found more empty tables than full and wondered why there was a 10 minute wait but seated the staff were friendly and helpful, the drinks came quickly and then the dinner and WOW! I wasn't disappointed. The Chips were light and fluffy and fish was super fresh and just melting in the mouth the Gluten free fish batter was light and golden and I was seriously happy. ( Deffo coming back again )

I felt welcomed as a solo diner. The waitress was friendly and professional. My food was excellent. However, what stood out to me was how clean the place was and how well organised the open kitchen was. Everyone was working very calmly and efficiently.

Couldn't fault anything here. Great service, ambience, cleanliness, beautiful interior and of course the haddock and chips were delicious and cooked to perfection! A must try is the Irish curry sauce...never tasted anything like it! Will return next time I'm in town.

This place is great. Always busy which is understandable. Whenever we go to Whitby we always book this place. The staff are wonderful and helpful and, of course, the food is superb. Whitby has the best fish and chips in the world, so to me, that makes Quayside's the best of the best.

Ordered vegan sausage and chips and asked about the oil which is vegetable. However, slightly confusing response from the member of staff that the vegan sausages are fried with the meat options, but the chips are separate. Disappointing as this will catch some out that don't ask and should be better labelled/explained. Chips were actually really good though!

The whole family had a lovely meal here, but for the two of us who are Gluten Free it was exception. Batrered GF fish options included haddock, cod, plaice, lemon sole and scampi, with the griddled salmon and sea bass also available. Even the children's menu had GF options. They have a local GF beer from Wold Top Brewery (none of that imported Peroni we usually have to live with), which was the cherry on the cake. I definitely recommend booking in advance, we sat upstairs at a big window.

Our food was excellent, the decor looked great, and the staff were really lovely! They made sure we were happy with our table and they were very knowledgable about the food and drinks.

We ate upstairs with lovely views of the harbour. We had fish and chips followed by apple and raspberry crumble - both yummy! The waiters were very polite and attentive. The place is very clean and well maintained. We will definitely return.

Very busy when we visited but had booked table in advance. Seated in upstairs of restaurant with views out to the abbey. Waiting staff working incredibly hard to give first class attention. Drinks and food arrived promptly after ordering. Delicious fish and chips. It was a special occasion lunch with 3 family birthdays - ambiance and food could not have been better.

Grabbed some take away chips with mushy pies and curry sauce, darted up the alleyways and steps to enjoy them sat by Bram Stokers bench with glorious views of the harbour and Abbey! Perfect portion size and lovely cooked chips. Would have liked to have tried the battered quorn sausage but unfortunately sold out when we went

5 out of 5 , the fish and chips were really fresh and well made, the mushy peas and fruity curry sauce hit the spot. It had been recommended by a friend and it didn’t disappoint.

The waiter was fantastic, so helpful and made sure we felt very welcome. Food was very good and we enjoyed a cocktail or 2. Would have good a 5 but lacked atmosphere on the night we were there as it was so quiet. Otherwise we really enjoyed our visit and will be back

Been coming to the Quayside for years, always our favourite for fish and chips. However, we were disappointed this time. The fish was quite thin and greasy. It seems quality has gone down since the refurbishment.

Coming to Whitby I knew we needed fish and chips but it’s so difficult to pick from so many choices. We plumped for the Quayside and I’m very glad we did! 2 x cod suppers and 1 x scampi - all very fresh and well cooked, service was quick, efficient and friendly.

We come here often with the family and always get a great spacious table, Beautiful food especially the fish and chips along with fantastic service. We will definitely see you again on our next trip to Whitby :)

Without doubt the best gluten free fish and chips in Whitby, and I've tried most! The staff are always super friendly and accommodating, the restaurant actually feels like a fancy restaurant rather than a cafe or chippy. I've got to be honest, it's not the cheapest but I really do feel you're getting your money's worth here which is why we return again and again. I've only given 4* just because I find the restaurant could be a little warmer, particularly upstairs and also because I adore the battered halloumi but they don't sell it in the takeaway! I've no doubt we will be back again in the summer and I'm already looking forward to it.

Was recommended this restaurant by a friend who regularly visits Whitby, and believes this to be the best. And his recommendation didn’t let us down. The batter on the fish was light and crumbled as you cut it. Plenty of fish inside and it was all pure white cod. The chips were also beautiful, cooked to perfection, soft and fluffy all the way through and not a bad chip on the plate. The sides were also delicious, peas and curry sauce both thick and tasty. Portion sizes were good, we both struggled to finish but wasn’t letting it beat us. The service was great, friendly staff, we had about a 5 minute wait for a table but staff were friendly and kept us up to date. Big open kitchen and you can see your food cooked. We had regular fish n chips, small fish n chips, homemade mushy peas, fruity curry sauce, bread and butter and 2 alcoholic drinks and it came to £49. Would recommend trying here if you are in Whitby. When we left the queue for the takeaway was also out the door, a sign of good food.

Clean place but the food over priced , fish absolutely delicious but chips bland and mushy peas the same . Battered sausage over £4 how? Only one other couple in eating I now know why , continental drilling in the background was annoying the waitress did apologise there are plenty of other places to eat fish and chips so shop around is my advice

Absolutely appalling. Overpriced and dreadful..... Just shy of £50 for 2 X fish chips and mushy peas and 2 cokes. The slice of bread and butter alone was an extra 90p and it was one pat of butter and a slice of curled up dry bread. The portion sizes were tiny for price and everything was charged for at additional cost. The staff are miserable and do not offer a nice friendly service. They sneakily charge 5% service charge on the bill and when we pointed.this out on receiving our receipt AFTER paying on our card the staff were obnoxious, rude and argumentative.....we were not offered this cost back even though we made it clear we were not happy paying this OPTIONAL charge. We have always rated this restaurant but we will not recommend and we will never return it's absolutely terrible....avoid a

By far the best fish and chips in Whitby. Perfection simple as that. The surroundings are perfect and the staff are friendly.

Just stopped by for a small cod and chips as we in Whitby and it would almost be rude not to try some. We picked well, light crispy batter with white flakey fish. Just enough chips too.

Took ages to be seated and even longer to have order taken. Only 1 person taking orders on a busy Saturday CRAZY! We had a train to catch, we ended up walking out and getting from their takeaway, eating on a bench close to the station. Takeaway was lovely though pricey.

We had high expectations from a previous visit but were really disappointed with a “medium” takeaway cod and chips. Whilst it initially looked fine we found that, on eating, it was actually a very thin piece of fish covered in thick very crispy batter. It was obviously overcooked as the fish was quite tough. Will not be back and would not recommend.

We called in here on our last day in Whitby. All the fish and chips are good in Whitby but I think this is the best. Excellent service in a nice environment and the fish and chips are delicious.

Went for a family 40th birthday. Asked if they could provide a balloon at the table which they did. Not only that, they had seated us upstairs which made us feel 'extra special.' Have been coming here for several years and have never been disappointed with the food.

Firstly I would like to say that I think this restaurant is among the best fish and chips in the area, and is as good as The Magpie. The food is always lovely and of a high standard and the service good. However, on our last visit, the bill came as a shock. Fish and chips twice with peas, a curry sauce, a tea and a soft drink came to over £50!! At the end of the day, it's just fish and chips! Sorry to say we will not be visiting here again, which we are very sad about but there has to a limit.

Easily best fish and chips in Whitby, the scampi is absolutely delicious best I've ever had anywhere the batter is so light golden, crispy and light. Drinks tad expensive over £5.50 - over £7 a glass. And the small fish and chips is massive well worth the money. Always go here everytime we go Whitby, no fish and chip place even comes close

The Quayside sits in an absolutely stunning building, which has the complete “Wow” factor, and everywhere is shiningly, spotlessly clean. My husband opted for the cod, while I went for the sea bass. I must say the cod was the most beautiful, fresh, melt in the mouth and delicious either of us have ever had anywhere ever ! My sea bass was a very generous sized two fillet portion, with a large portion of tasty salad and chips. I ate all my chips… which is unheard of - and so is a great compliment to the venue ! The staff were all very helpful and efficient. All in all The Quayside is simply pure class - in both the venue, and the food !

Very good experience at the Quayside Restaurant. First impressions were good as we were quickly greeted at the door and shown to a table of our choosing. The female staff member was friendly and efficient, seated us at the table with menus and said she would be back to take our order. Ordering was timely but not rushed, I had large haddock and chips with mushy peas and my wife had scampi. It was busy at the time but we didn’t have long to wait for our food which was plentiful and well presented. We were asked about sauces and these were brought to our table swiftly. I really enjoyed my fish and chips, a big piece of fish well cooked, white and flaky and clearly very fresh. If you don’t like skin on choose cod which comes skin off. The scampi was prepared on the premises and agin was very good. The service overall was excellent the staff being attentive and professional. The establishment was very clean, probably the cleanest restaurant I’ve been in for a long time and the toilet facilities on the first floor the best and cleanest outside of a quality hotel, full marks there. The tables were quickly cleaned and reset including sweeping under the tables to pick up and debris that haft fallen there agin full marks. I will definitely revisit on our next trip to Whitby.

What a great find. We are Coeliac and very wary of eating out. The restaurant and the takeaway menu are totally gluten free. Every effort is made to make sure that you have the same great experience as any other customer. Even down to gluten free vinegar. We declined the side of bread butter due to the overly generous size of the portion. We had the regular - glad we didn’t have the Whale sized portion!!

We've stayed in Whitby a lot, and never ventured into the Quayside. We assumed that, as with the Magpie, any place to eat on Pier would be mega expensive. Don't be fooled though, the quayside isn't cheap, but compared to the Magpie, it's definitely better...
