We had a dinner there last Sunday. The meat was tough as old boots and the veg was cooked from frozen. You only had a choice of 2 meats. There were very few people in eating and now i know why. Would not recommend.

Ordered a half of Osset White Rat. Was served it in a glass with a dead fly on the rim and black gunge on the rest of the rim. Pointed this out to the barman who offered to change to a fresh glass. Fair enough. But then proceeded to pour beer from dirty glass into clean glass. I politely requested fresh beer in the fresh glass, at which point senior barman told me to leave! Unbelievable poor customer service and bad hygiene practice. Wouldn't recommend. Unnecessarily aggressive and miserable bar staff. Very disappointing.🙁

We booked the back room for a get together with family and friends and Steve the landlord provided a lovely buffet. It was the perfect venue with a nice beer garden and steps to seating by the canal. It was all ready for us and Steve was really helpful and made sure we had everything we needed. There was no problem parking nearby and it went really well, I would definitely recommend the Puss in Boots as a venue for a do.

Met with close family for Mothers Day, late lunch. What a lovely surprise on a fine warm sunny day. Great new look and feel to the now renamed Waterside Bistro restaurant side of the pub. We entered via the more traditional pub side, with friendly smiling customers. Also accessible from the canalside, up external steps. The staff team were friendly, knowledgeable, helpful and great with all customer groups, to include dogs as part of the family, too. So thanks to Lou and Iain, we enjoyed the experience, delicious hot roasts (various) and laid-back yet efficient service. We can honestly say it is highly recommended

What an Idillic place, Cant wait to sit outside in the sun, I visited with my partner in the evening and it was a little cold outside, but they have a lovely little terrace outside by the river for warmer days. The food was amazing, fresh and home cooked is what they tell you, and it can be seen and tasted when it arrives. The staff are very attentive, its run by a lovely couple who cant do enough for you, and clearly appreciate your custom, a wide selection of drinks available also, with some fantastic Ales, (Doombar) which is rarely found within smaller pubs outside of Cornwall. Since its recent re-brand, it has definitely improved, with more of an emphasis on the local friendly family pub type atmosphere rather than the previously branded viking type, which didn't really fit in with the local community. Ell worth a visit, and an up and coming regular.

I sometimes try new places and am disappointed. This time I was delighted. I was tempted in by the mention of scallops on a black pudding mashed potato on the boards outside. Inside I asked what dark ales they had and took a Theakstons Old Peculiar. Excellent. As a starter I took the goats cheese in panko, which came with a surprising pickled onion garnish. This too was excellent. Then the scallops, and yes, they were excellent. The staff and owners worked very hard to accommodate the needs of the next table, it seemed like literally nothing was too much trouble. As they made great efforts to please, I enjoyed a baked New York Cheesecake. Yum. The new owners here are working incredibly hard to make this a truly exceptional place to eat and drink. Don't delay, get here and enjoy it while you can. It's amazing!

we won the competition on Facebook. Myself an husband went for a lovely quite night out! Not what happened our table was booked for 7.30pm it wasn't clean or ready for us. We was told by the manager due to being busy we had to go to the bar. As table service wasn't available. ( Not in accordance with the new guidelines) we wasn't asked to sign in or scan the track an trace? We was given already used menus. We ordered cheesey garlic bread must of being microwaved the base wasn't cooked and chicken wings was served warm. We sent them back. I had cod chips an mushy peas the fish was very hard in places chips must of being cooked a couple times, my mushy peas had mint in them which wasn't pleasant. I ate nothing. My husband being a man manage to eat his ribeye but said is wasn't much. The football was on and they had the tv so loud I couldn't hear my husband talking to me. Which wasn't nice. As well as people shouting over it. The pub was far to loud. I really wanted to have a lovely meal with winning the prize. Totally gutted. The pub needs to also in force social distancing and practice it to. The manager a young woman was kissing the customers good bye... WHAT! WHY! Also chatting to a busy table of 12 or more (rule of 6 not been kept) no clear guidance on which way in or out. I have to be honest we didn't feel like we was safe. And the pub is very poorly run. We won't be going again. I can only hope they read my review and find it honest and helpful. They need to do more to keep our town safe.

We stopped here as we’d moored up outside and I have to confess upon arrival inside I wasn’t overwhelmed however please don’t let this put you off. We were greeted by a really friendly lady who welcomed us and we both chose carvary. There was a choice of 3 meats, 6 veg and 2 potatoes and the portion sizes were great! The mash was “proper” and the veg included cauliflower cheese. We’d opted for a 2 course offer and almost wished we didn’t as we definitely didn’t need starters although they were delicious.I’d really rate this place as somewhere for a Sunday carvary and don’t be underwhelmed by the decor as the food most certainly makes up for it!

I avoided this pub for many years as it had a bit of bad rep but since I opened my shop across the road i started calling in. The new land lady is really friendly and helpful. She often keeps a carvery for us as I don’t always finish work until later on. Just the little things like they had run out of Yorkshire puddings so she made us some fresh! They are so tasty the handmade mash is really good too. I’m also a bit fussy about what wine I drink as I have to avoid sulphites so they always let me choose one so I can enjoy a drink without getting unwell. The locals can be noisy but it’s entertaining and they are all very friendly even extending this kindness to come and pay a visit to my shop and support it I really like this pub now, they even do a dog carvery and dogs are always welcome Great local pub with great food and very good value.

We visited on a Sunday at around 1230hrs. The sign outside stated that Sunday Roast was available for £9.50. On entering we were greeted by a young lady who welcomed our dog before accepting that we were there. We were very pleased that so much fuss was made. We ordered or drinks and were directed to the servery at the far end of the room. Martin, the cook, asked us what we would like and talked us through the options. Three types of roast, we had one of each...and six different vegetables besides mashed and roast potatoes. We were both stuffed when we had eaten. The dog received two dishes of off cuts which he demolished in record time.We went back on the Monday evening and got the same sort of greeting. We ate again and I say now that both Sunday and Monday meals are under priced. We intend to return!!!!

I note all the reviews here are rather old. We were a group of 5 hungry narrow boaters arriving at 6pm in the pouring rain after a long, cold, wet day cruising we were ready for a hot meal and a couple of beers. Ominously the canal side door was locked but there seemed to be some movement indoors. Going round to the front door we found 3 lads inside, replying to my query they said they were open but could only offer to make us a sandwich. Too late to move on we moored and made our own sandwiches on board. They really should update their website which clearly says they offer food 4-8pm. A real disappointment for us.

We have been coming to the Bears Head for years and although it can be a bit hit and miss regarding the experience it has generally been OK. However, I don't if its changed ownership or they just cant get the staff but my last experience was appalling and also our family's last ever visit. We waited over 20 minutes before anyone came to the table to acknowledge our existence, the glasses were dirty, still bearing the lipstick of the previous owner. When we asked for clean glasses they were taken away and returned...still dirty. The food was inedible, with exception to the broccoli, which was the only thing that was cooked properly. The roast potatoes were so greasy that they became mush as soon as put my fork in them, the mash seemed to have been microwaved to the extreme, the cauliflower was sitting in water and completely tasteless. One member of staff, a young lad, seemed so disinterested in being there, it was almost comical. Sad to say, we will not be returning and an association that has lasted almost 20 years has come to an end.

We hired the dining room for a big birthday and had about 50 guests. Lauren and the team were excellent from the first time we visited. We had a hot buffet and organised a guitarist. The food was great, plenty of it and the room is warm and cosy. We looked at a few venues and so glad we decided on the Drum and Monkey. We’ll definitely be back.
