Purple Mango in Portsmouth

Very disappointing !!!!!!! I never saw an Indian food like this ! LOOK AT THE BUTTER AND BAD STAFF

Cant deny that the place is very well done out & service is very good, but after reading other review's about their curries being the best that they have tasted, all i can say is that ive obviously been in lots of other Indian resturants that they haven't been in, as i can assure you that there are far better tasting currie's out there. It was ok but no-more than average and not somewhere that i'll be rushing back to im afraid. Baghi's are really small & peshwari nan was more like a plain nan. Curry itself wasn't too bad but the pilar rice had a purfumy taste to it which spoilt the overall taste of it. Blue Cobra in North End, Secret Alley & Indian Kitchen in Cosham are far better.

Impromptu meal for 2vafter an evening at the Kings Theatre. Food was delicious and the staff were friendly and helpful. I left my purse behind by mistake and Raj put it in the safe and I arranged to collect it the following date. Highly recommend 👌

Wow yet again another fantastic meal. Service first class as always. Also enjoyed the change to after eight dinner mints as opposed to the orange chocolates.

Went to purple mango in Southsea as was staying in Portsmouth. We was a bit early but that did not matter was showed to are table by Abul .lovely clean table .nice bottle of wine & popperdom v& dips was nice. Starter I had butterfly prawn .my husband had onion barjee. For mains I had the purple mango special. It was very good. My husband had lamb curry boiled rice ,sag aloo,also garlic nanna. The food came out lovely & hot.the restaurant is nice & clean .also nothing to much trouble for Abul. Would come back when we are in Portsmouth.

I visited this place on a Wednesday before my show at Kings theatre. I have to say the decor and the astetics of the place were amazing and very clean. All the waiters were accommodating and all had smiless. We ordered our papadom which comes with the usual trio of mint sauce, mango chutney and onion salad. The mint sauce was lovely. Light in colour but with a spicy kick in the end. For starters we ordered the prawn puree, onion bhaji and chicken tikka. The prawn puree was light in sauce and the puree bread was delicious thin and not covered in oil, bhajee was crispy and cooked well but not to well done.The tikka was lovely served in a sizzler with garnish. The mains we ordered a Madras, Dhansank and a special dish (which I can't remember the name but it did have a boiled egg in it) we also had a keema rice a chana rice a pilau rice and plain nann and a peshawari nann The mains, now iv eaten alot of Indians but I can honestly say iv never eaten a curry what was fresh and so light, they all didn't seem they were cooked in a pan full of oil and gheee and all had such great tasting flavour and the nanns the peshawari was actually a full off peshawari and the rice was so light and fluffy. A great meal what left us full but not heavy

It was lovely , still very hot after delivery .. although, chicken passanda was a little tasteless (I don’t know what it was but sorry bland!!)

The order was not delivered even thou it stated 'it was delivered'. We have been at home the entire time. This is unacceptable

Having had a very long and stressful day at work, when I got home I decided not to cook, but to run a bath and to book a meal online via the Purple Mango website. The last time that I booked a takeout / delivery was just a couple of weeks ago for my wife and I. However, on this occasion, when I got to the cart to pay for my starter and main, which came to just over £18, the Purple Mango website would not allow me to pay as I hadn't placed an order for more than £25. This is a new feature on the Purple Mango website. I certainly don't claim to be Purple Mango's biggest customer, nor would I describe myself as a “regular". However, my friends and I have dined at the restaurant many times and despite on every occasion, the staff almost ushering you out of the door, while you are still trying to swallow your final mouthful, the food is excellent. Feeling somewhat disappointed, I telephoned the restaurant. I explained to the gentleman on the telephone (whom was very polite) that I was knackered and intended to unwind at home and was rather hoping for a meal to be delivered as on previous occasions and asked if he could take payment for my order over the telephone. The gentleman told me that he couldn't, because my food order was less than £25. I explained again and suggested that a food order of over £25 for one person, wasn't particularly realistic and asked on account of me being a previous customer, was there no way that a delivery could be made? The gentleman apologised and gave me the old "I just work here, it's a company policy" line. Owning a small business in Southsea myself, I stressed to the gentleman the importance of customer retention and satisfaction and whilst I didn't expect to receive special treatment, I thought that the new company policy insisting that a single person consumes/orders more than £25 worth of food, was both a bad business and customer retention decision. I wanted to convey my opinion (as a customer) to the manager and asked the gentleman when the manager would be in? The gentleman told me there isn't a manager, just the business owner, who is in every evening and advised me to call back tomorrow to to speak with him. As the gentleman had just told me that the owner was in every evening, I asked if I could speak with him “now”. After a short pause, the gentleman then told me that the owner was "day off today”. The food at the Purple Mango restaurant is excellent…staff attitude towards diners, not so excellent. However, unless you are planning to spend £25 on a takeout meal for just yourself, I certainly wouldn’t call this restaurant. ...Very disappointed and somewhat surprised.

At last, an Indian that ticks all the boxes! Defo our go to from now on!

Really lovely tasting lamb madras with a pleasant depth of flavour.

Excellent place. Amazing Indian food. We're two Canadians who just happened to walk by and they had a spot. I ordered a curry and it was really amazing. I kid you not. My wife ordered a spicy dish and it was super tasty. The staff were really nice. We walked back to our hotel totally stuffed. I can't remember the prices but it wasn't expensive, at least not for the UK.

Our food was squashed so the curry’s went over everything and half can’t be eaten. What can be eaten is nice

First of all very very bad experience first time had a wait around 2 hours and delivery boy was wondering around the restaurant but here didn’t pick it up and after this all i pick my order by my self and they asking for good reviews what ridicules thing very bad bad experience first time.

First time going to the purple mango. I've been to curry restaurants all over portsmouh but this is by far the best. The staff treat you like royalty, the food was very quick and was the most delicious curry I've had. Will definitely come back

Went here as recommended by a friend Restaurant was clean Waiters were tidy Service was okay Food flavour was really good The quantity-of meat and rice really was on the small side £15 each a curry £4 a rice £6 a Naan with little filling

28/07/2024 food ordered at 20:40, restaurant phoned at 22:22 Awful experience. Rang Purple Mango restaurant to chase my order for delivery. I explained I placed the order nearly 2 hours ago online through JustEat and do they know what's happening? After a lot of re explaining as the guy didn't seem to understand, he told me they don't have my order and I need to reorder. I told him they already have my money and the order was confirmed, I'm not paying twice for the same meal. He kept telling me they don't have the order and they have no system to take online orders. He then asked me for the order number, which I provided. Now he tells me it's already been delivered. I explained it hasn't and I don't have any food. He said, 'well then, ring the JustEat, we just cook food and send'. I asked why he told me the order didn't exist and tried to charge me twice? He just kept repeating to 'phone the Just Eat', after I explained you can't just 'phone them'. He ended by telling me I should be more clearer next time and should have explained that I ordered online through JustEat... The issue here isn't the strong language barrier, or that there may have been an issue with the JustEat driver (though it seems more likely that they just didn't check the JustEat orders, given the start of the phone call with him saying they don't have the order.) The issue is his attitude, inability to provide accurate information, attempting to charge me twice, and blaming everyone else (even myself) with no resolution. If I'd have reordered and been charged twice, no doubt he would have refused to refund and attempted to blame for this as well, without batting an eyelid. These takeaway places are getting worse as the years go on. Food, service and troubleshooting quality is on a rapid decline, and they care less and less.

Rang to chase restaurant, said I ordered nearly 2 hours ago online through JustEat. They said they didn't have the order and I need to REORDER and be charged twice. Rest of review on Google due to character limit.

Lovely fresh and chunky ingredients, a really lovely tasty curry.

The food is expensive but absolutely superb. This has to be one of the best curry houses in Portsmouth and I will eat here again. I would recommend.

Very tasty dhansak. Unfortunately they sent me lamb samosas instead of bhajis - good job I'm not vegetarian!

We were recommended by friends. Asked for chicken tikka dansak but got plain chicken (which was pink) and the popadoms were soft!

Absolutely excellent food. The staff are always attentive. Good value. Cannot praise the place enough. It is a spotless restaurant and the restrooms are always extremely clean.

Visited with our friend last night. We'd eaten there before and seemed to remember it was unmemorable but our friend likes the Purple Mango. Food was good, although quite small portions (and we're not big eaters). The young gentleman serving was excellent but I'm sad to say, that's where the quality of service stopped. From then on the food was banged on the table and the older gentleman was very surly. At 22:45 he told my wife it was time to go, as he was closed (even though it was earlier than the advertised time). I'm always bemused as to why any restaurant would provide a below par service as competition is high, particularly in this style of cuisine.

Second time at this restaurant and both a wonderful experience. Food good, service good. Will be back next time we visit Southsea

We had a group function tonight. I looked at the reviews before arrival and saw they were mixed, and on the extremes. To be fair the food was great, and the service I cannot really complain on except I can see why some people might see otherwise. When the food was brought to the table, the gentleman handling it was somewhat abrupt, but I really think its just a language thing i.e. the way he probably speaks comes across as abrupt, but not really the way he is... if that makes sense ? The main person serving our group of 11 was quite smooth, and witty. Given the place has been around for many years, I suspect you will only see extremes on the comments in Google. If my wife liked aromatic and spicy food we would probably be go back. I would not have an issue recommending the place.

I am extremely disappointed with the level of service provided by both the staff and the manager. It is disheartening to see that they lack a basic understanding of what customer service entails and how to properly treat their customers. To make matters worse, when we ordered paneer tikka, we were served a dish that had chicken mixed in it. This is completely unacceptable, especially considering the fact that we clearly stated our dietary preference as pure vegetarian. As paying customers, we deserve better treatment and a higher standard of service. Our entire evening has been completely spoiled by this.

I recently visited Purple Mango and had a very disappointing experience. From the moment we arrived, the staff were incredibly rude. They seemed more interested in rushing us to place our order than providing any kind of welcoming service. It felt like we were an inconvenience to them rather than valued customers. To make matters worse, when our food finally arrived, we were not given any plates. Instead, the staff rudely placed salad bowls directly onto the table without any regard for basic dining etiquette. The overall attitude of the staff was unprofessional and made the dining experience very unpleasant. I expect a certain level of courtesy and professionalism when dining out, and unfortunately, Purple Mango fell far short of these expectations. I would not recommend this restaurant to anyone looking for a pleasant and enjoyable dining experience.

Love this place. Since my long time family favourite restaurant closed, I have been coming here. The thing that stands out the most for me is that the food is not swimming in oil, even when you order a takeaway. The food is quite contemporary and definitely worth a go.

Visiting Portsmouth for the day to see family. chicken tikka masala was the worst I’ve ever eaten, hardly any chicken, sauce hadn’t been mixed very well and far too much sauce .but so hungry I ate it anyway . Felt like I was eating a soup. Bombay aloo and mushroom rice weren’t great either . Won’t be ordering again , very disappointing . Quick delivery though

Popped in on a beautiful May evening on a Monday. Service was friendly and attentive, though I was the only sit in diner at 7:30. I had Bombay fishcakes to start. Mainly potato, tough and flavourless. Salad was nice and crisp. Had the venison (non spicy) main. Again no depth of flavour or taste; bit chewy though you kind of expect a bit of that with venison if not done well. Pilau rice not that fresh. When asked I said starter was 'fine' main 'ok' left half of both. Didn't want to rain on parade's as only customer... Won't be back.

Onion Bhaji cold the rest of food warm but not hot

First visit last night and absolutely blown away by how delicious the food was. All dishes were full of flavour and had a uniqueness about them which really stood out. Presentation was wonderful and service superb. Hugely recommend.

Really lovely Dansak and bhajis - one of the best curries I've had for a long time!

Went for a meal with 3 friends and we all agreed our food was possibly the best we have ever tasted and reviewed accordingly. Went back a few days later with the Mrs and their halo slipped, I ordered the same and my chilli nan was nowhere as good as before, Naga curry was as good, starters were ok, Bhajis delicious but other bits of mixed kebab were not brilliant. I or we will go back as it's a lovely place to eat a curry and the staff are brilliant, Ali gets a thumbs up from me.

Obvious location for a quick bite after the theatre, not a great experience in any shape or form. Table had shakes and wobbles, very unstable. Service wasn't on a firm footing either, food not the greatest but reflective in the price and edible.

Staying in Portsmouth for a few days .was told to booked & try this place. Wow what a great place. Clean & tidy .all staff dress smart. Food was amazing can't wait to come back.

AVOID AVOID AVOID! Found a sharp piece of wood in the rice of 2 separate orders. Contacted the restaurant they didn’t care. Offered me £3. Gave them the benefit of the doubt on first order but happen for the second time, they didn’t even care it’s disgraceful and unprofessional. I paid over £30 for for my orders. Will never go there again!

While tables were full, they didn't entertain a take away and gave me a wait time of 45 mins. Firstly, no attention was given unless I asked a couple of times.

Been here 3 times now and madras flavour changes every time. Was very sweet and not hot enough this time. Didnt enjoy it and wont be returning. Staff wanted us in and out as quick as they could.

Used to be my favourite Indian restaurant.The food was delicious. But having said that the service that we received was terrible we had to remind the waiter three times about our drinks order. My partner asked if she could take the remainder of her meal home the waiter said no problem and returned from the kitchen with two takeaway trays and a bag and put it on the table so my partner had to do it herself at the table. That's the first time ever that we had to do that. So on that basis I would not recommend this restaurant

Turned away at the door as I was a party of one - plenty of 2 seat tables available. You should be careful - the single you turn away today could be a much larger group next time. Here on business - will never darken your doors again.

Lovely looking restaurant, my starter was delicious! Main course not so much! Was detailed as chicken makahni on the menu, definitely wasn't chicken makahni was very bland and lacking flavour! Explains this to the waiter, no apology he just wanted my money! I tipped too (what a mug) waiters also not very welcoming, hey ho you live and learn. Some businesses just don't take pride in the service they deliver.

Yes, we Did NOT receive the Meal. Even though we were in the Foyer 25mins Early. So I think I will have a Full Refund please. Unless you can Deliver it Tonight to the Travel Lodge in town. Or you Refund my money and I'll Reorder Tonight.

Just received my order and the delivery driver was extremely rude and angry, he said I gave him the wrong number and said he was ringing and waiting for half an hour to find the address, but I did not give anyone my number so he was obviously given the wrong number by the person who answered the phone to my order when I called, extremely disappointed
