I used to greatly enjoy visiting this eatery when I lived in West Yorkshire a number of years ago, and when I found myself unexpectedly overnighting in Bradford for business in the run up to Christmas, I decided to pay it a visit to see how it had stood the test of time. I wasn't disappointed! The shami kebabs were superb, and for me perfectly spiced, and the keema balti was rich, flavoursome and again spot on spice-wise. I left feeling very happy, and delighted that at least one iconic Bradford restaurant remains as good as it always was. I will be back!

Picked up a takeout, king prawn and paneer, sheesh kebab and pilar rice, was offered rice as an alternative to roti which are too thick for me thinking that I was offered this as an alternative as most Bradford curries come with chappatis, didn’t think anything of it until I got home, £21.00, curry was nice, however kebabs were a bit old and shrivelled and I was charged £3.50 for the very poor pilar rice, to be honest this used to be a gem but I think it’s gone downhill and that’s the price I’d pay at the Shimla in Shipley which is far superior, wish id gone there as it’s my usual but was swayed by friends reviews of this place, won’t be making that mistake again.

This used to be our local, and we would happily come here. Normally, when we came here (and it’s quiet) the service is good, the food is tasty, the price is reasonable. Our most recent visit was extremely disappointing. We were brought out our starters without plates. Had to ask for plates which were absolutely freezing and immediately cooled the food. Had to ask for cutlery which didn’t come (had to get it ourselves). Asked for drinks which didn’t come. Asked for lemon which didn’t come. All in all terrible service and sub par food. We’ve never had service this bad and had no choice but to leave after paying for the starters. To be fair to the restaurant, there was a large party upstairs but this is no excuse for shocking service to your regulars and the only reason there isn’t a 1* is because usually it’s not busy so you might get better service. It feels like the staff showed their true colours by mistreating regulars for the sake of a one off party.

Day off work and well worth travelling to Bradford for this superb meat feast. We shared a portion of spicy Chappal Kebab, Chicken Pakora and the best, tasty, succulent Lamb Chops cooked to perfection in the Tandoor. I had Kebader Kebab on Nan and my mate had the fish. Jug of Mango Lassi to cool the effect of rock hot chilli sauce. I never even look at curries as the charcoal does the job.

Only been once before a couple of years or so ago and it was not at all good. So after allowing a long rest we tried again yesterday, August 18th.My wife and I had fish pakora starters and my cousin had veg samosas. The pakora had some interesting spices which were new to us. The samosas were apparently surprisingly hot.For the main course I normally avoid korma as it's too mild, creamy, sweet and coconutty for me but I like the Punjabi version which a restaurant in my home town does. So bearing in mind the expected Punjabi cuisine I gave the Punjab a trial of their chicken korma and was not disappointed. In fact it was probably the best I'd ever had. There was quite a delay for the food but it was well worth the wait. My wife had chicken biryani and although she said the chicken was really nicely cooked and presented she felt it was a little too hot for a biryani. My cousin had lamb chanaa and was impressed. I had a taste, was also impressed and may well have that next time.Based on my Punjabi Korma I really wanted to give 5 stars but then I paid a visit to the toilet. The floor was wet, and even the only roll of toilet paper was also wet. Wrestling with wanting to knock off two stars for this, the great food won me over so I just deducted one.Very well done Punjab, you've obviously changed chef since our last visit. Smarten up your toilet and advance to 5 stars for next time?

Never had a poor meal - the best Masala Fish around. Other dishes are well cooked and very tasty. However, they fall short on hygiene. Staff in outdoor clothing in the food preparation area. AND NO BEARD SNOOD on someone with a very long beard. Surely these are the very basics of hygiene. The restaurant tries very hard to please and faults are overlooked when the food is good.

We visited here on a Friday night at around 8.30pm. It wasn't too crowded in the restaurant and we were quickly found a table, the takeaway side of the business also looked quite busy and 3 ppl were waiting to collect orders. We found the staff to be very polite and helpful, unfortunately the starter and the main that my other half ordered were sold out but we were quickly notified, the server apologised and offered to help him choose an alternative. After ordering, the starters were delivered quickly and were some of the best seekh kebabs we have had. The mains followed after a short break and both the lamb saag and the Punjabi chicken kharai were very tasty and with a medium spice, the naan bread and roti were also very good. The staff were very attentive in asking if everything was ok and if we needed anything else. I feel the actual restaurant looks tired and in need of a bit of a face lift but if you can see past this the food is great. We will definitely be returning-2 starters, 2 main courses, bread and drinks (No alcohol served) for less than £30.

Which ever one it is. It is sad because the food today was utterly HORRENDOUS. Let me start with the Starter of the Seek Kebab - burn on the outside and bloody on the inside, stringy ie full of gristle (tough inedible tissue)..tasted exactly what it's shape looked like. The Massala Fish - oh my God what can I say about...cheap spice mix coating a piece of fish that tasted like "cardboard".So "If you like CARDBOARD TASTING MASSALA FISH and GRISTLE SEEK KEBABS then this is the place for you"If not the avoid..Avoid..AVOID!!!! However not only was it such a disappointment and total rip off, its such a shame new management has ruined it. Firstly I'm perplexed to why the bill came so high £21.40!!; 2 rotis, 1 chicken handi & 2 tinyy chicken samosas. The salad has always been complimentary and to our horros on the bill it said salad £1.40. On top chicken handi was oilyy and hardlyy a medium portion and tinyyy chicken pieces. Hence we had to order samosas to fill us up further. The head chef previously at this place and main owner was amazingg. He made sure we got amazingg service. We will not be returning again sadly

The Punjab has been my favourite place to go for a curry for years. Went tonight and it's quite obviously changed hands. The food was average at best; stale poppadoms, chicken free chicken samosas, gristly chicken in the main course. To make matters worse the waiter picked our used cutlery up from the starter plates and put them on the table so we could use them again for our mains. He was clearly put out when I asked for three clean sets. To round off a disappointing meal, when I offered my card to pay (something I've done many times before) the manager pointed at a dirty napkin stuck to the back of the orange juice machine on which was scrawled "cash only". As I had no cash I was pointed in the direction of a cash machine at the garage up the road, the fact it was raining heavily rubbing salt into the wound. When I asked why nobody had thought to mention the need for cash before taking our order, the answer was a shrug accompanied by a blank look. Under its new owners it appears the Punjab is a shadow of its former self. I will not be returning; sad after so many great meals over the years.

Seated immediately by a friendly waiter who left us with the menu and gave time to look through this. Quite chilly as though no heating in situ and also no music in the background so potentially I could hear others conversation as I'm sure they could mine decor looked tured and could do with a revamp. Placed order but what was brought out was incorrect order and corrections were made and problem fixed straight away without any hesitation of an apology from the waiter. Food tasted great. Could taste all the different herbs and ingredients used, the reassuring thing being we could watch our order being freshly cooked.Would definitely come again. There are plenty of good, unpretentious restaurants in Bradford but this is one of the very best. The food is wonderful and several of the dishes are quite a bit different from the usual. Try a spot of Karella with lamb, for example. For those like me who are more used to the usual range of dishes Karella is a "bitter gourd". It gives the dish a gorgeous, smokey sort of flavour. The staff are very friendly and helpful. The atmosphere is cheerful and relaxed. It is not a smart venue for best frocks and suits and ties, but the food woul not be out of place in such an establishment.

Just done some research and found out that their restaurant is closed because of rats seen by health and safety officers. It has been my pleasure to eat at this wonderful restaurant from the tender young age of six up till now and if god wills in the future as well! May I recommend the Massala fish which is as they say in street language 'peng'. It has the right amount of Massala on it and the fish is so moist and tender to the bone(s). The price is roughly £50 for a family of four I would say so in that regard, the pricing is decent. The mains are decent as well but I really look forward to the dessert; Falooda. As Bradford is a Muslim-esque city (according to fox news), this is the place for halal foodies and so I would recommend my fellow Muslims and non Muslim sisters and brothers to dine in this wonderful city of Bradford.

Although I have been to this place many times before, I had never been on an evening. I was passing one evening last week and decided to have a meal and damn, what an awful decision it was. The foyer was full of people struggling, disorganised. There were about 8-9 people working in the kitchen and 4-5 waiters; all running around like headless chickens. We were eventually shown to a table and then forgotten. After a long time waiting we had to forcibly stop a waiter and make him take our order. After a while we got our starters. We asked for serviettes, knifes/forkes and bigger plates but were ignored. After waiting several mins we just helped ourselves from storage area. In fact everybody else were doing the same; fetching their own plates, serviettes and knifes/forkes. We then waited absolutely ages for the main course; and thats after collaring a waiter and protesting. It is obvious that the young waiters were struggling with the amount of work. They also appeared to lack training; they absolutely had no idea what to do and in what order. It is fair to say that the owner tries to cram as many people in into a small area with as little untrained staff as possible. It does'nt work and turns it into a horrible customer experience. I think it is the simple food on the menu that keeps the place going otherwise it would have closed many moons ago. In fact they could do better by selling take-out food and letting people eat at the tables; do away with waiters and all that.

Can't understand some of these negative reviews. Don't get me wrong you don't go to the Punjab for the decor and it's certainly not a place I'd go for a celebration type meal but by god the food is good. The Punjab is more of a cafe bar than restaurant. No alcohol can be bought or consumed and you are generally in and out in not much more than 30 minutes. I'd describe the service as pretty basic bringing warm plates 5 minutes before the food etc but we've never been left waiting around. We go to the Punjab for one thing only the food. It's excellent and this is obvious but the amount of local Asian people who eat there. The local Asian community aren't going to eat in a mediocre restaurant. The food is well spiced and always full on flavour. They do use a lot of gee and it's not the type of curry I'd want to eat every week but I always enjoy it when we do go. Often get keema mata and it's simple beautiful every mouth full packed with flavour.Don't listen to the bad reviews, if you want top drawer curry get yourself to the Punjab if you're a true curry fan you won't be disappointed.

We had really poor service, you don't expect the waiter to leave you mid order to deal with another customer ! After you've already waited too long !The food was mediocre , the toilets were a disgrace and then they gave us the wrong bill after another long wait , where we got up and went to counter to get as our taxi had arrived !!We won't be going again , it just made us realise the place we usually go to is great.

Having come from London I really miss my lahori style food in Bradford. So recently I have been really enjoying Punjabi food here again. First time I ordered keema naan there was only traces of mince in it, but the second time I went in and mentioned this to young guy at counter and we got the best keema naans ever. The chef who made it really made it so good. The week after I ordered punjabi karahi & karela gosht which were so fresh and delicious. Tasted like proper lahori food. I will definately be coming back and ordering more punjabi style food!

Just ordered a takeaway - the food was fine but they did not include the poppadoms, which we had paid for. We rang up and they were very unhelpful, implied it was our fault for not double checking and refused to deliver them (we're not far away). Not very good customer service really :(

Me and a curry loving friend are currently undertaking a ‘Bradford Curry Tour’ – aiming to sample some of the finer delights of Bradford’s Asian Indian restaurants. Each week we pick a restaurant out of a lucky dip, and our first token of delight was the Punjab Sweet House…Or token of horror!First, I’ll start on the positives, as there are very few. The tables and cutlery were reasonably clean, and we were offered free water upon arrival. Pretty standard I am sure in many restaurants, but we felt it was noteworthy as the rest of the dining experience was akin to eating food not worthy for a rodent. Lets make a start with the starters (excuse the pun). We both ordered lamb chops, and were shocked to receive our starter within three minutes of placing our orders. This screamed microwavable reheats to us, but alas, sticking to our rules, we continued to devour the said meat. The lamb chops were extremely chewy, lacking flavour, and cold in the middle. The mint sauce that accompanied the chops was watery and had an unpalatable texture. The chilli sauce was slightly better, but was overly laden with chilli seeds. The best thing about the dish was probably the salad, which was fresh. On to the main course; we both ordered the Chicken Karahi, although I ordered the Punjab version with butter. We both came to a consensus that both dishes were devoid of actual flavours that one would expect to permeate a Karahi, and secondly, the chef was probably a little overly zealous with his use of ghee. Thankfully the chicken was cooked well. The sundries that accompanied the dishes of choice were pea pilau rice, and cheese naan. We actually ordered standard pilau rice, but we were not too irked receiving pea pilau rice, the peas were quite nice. However, the rice was a little too undercooked for our liking. The cheese naan bread was one of the worst cheese naan’s I’ve ever sampled. The cheese used was cheap and the use of it was sporadic and uncharitable. The naan was burnt very thin. I appreciate that cheese naan is not to everyone’s liking, and is probably not the top choice of sundries for curry purists, but it is a personal favourite and I expect it to actually contain a little cheese, and that the chef who cooks it uses some basic culinary skills. There was one table of customers when we arrived, who left before our starter came. Not once did a member of staff ask how we were getting on with our meal, or did we need anything else. We were then the only table for the short 45 minutes of our dining experience. This probably speaks volumes. The toilets were also less than sterile; and unfortunately after recently reading an Anthony Bourdain biography, one poignant statement kept returning to my mind; “the overall state of the toilets probably reflects the state of the kitchens and the hygiene of the chef.” Not a good thought...Overall, we decided to give the restaurant 1/10 and would under no uncertain terms ever return, nor recommend to any friends or colleagues.

Living in Bradford the punjab was our weekly dining out option & never let us down. The food is that good that even after moving to York 7 years ago we still go to the punjab every week!! Take no notice of the negative reviews, the same head chef has been there since we started going and the food is as beautiful as ever. The staff are friendly & experienced & I'll continue with my 84 mile round trip for the best asian cuisine I've ever had!

Like with many Bradford Restaurants, when the key man takes a back seat things go downhill quite quickly, Punjab used to do an excellent Mixed Grill, not what we experienced yesterday, the grill was nothing to write home about and the meats were very dry and tired looking. The salad was very sad, just a bit of chopped up Iceberg Lettuce and three very lonely looking strands of red onion, No tomatoes, No Cucumber and no Lemon ): . The main course of Chicken Masala for two was ok in quantity but bland and tasteless. Don't think we would return.

Ten of us from work visited here for lunch shortly before Christmas. We sent through our order earlier that morning. Unfortunately for us there was already another party of around 20 in the restaurant when we arrived. Therefore it came as no surprise that they seemed to receive quicker service. For starter I had Chapple Kebabs which I'd had recommended. There were two and they were tasty with quite a kick to them. They were served with a small onion and lettuce salad and yoghurt sauce. We had a long wait for our main courses, but when they arrived the majority thought they were very good. My fish karahi with peas pilau rice was really, really good. Both the taste and texture were spot on, although it did contain some very tiny fragments of fish bones. One of our party felt his curry was a little on the bland side. Another one was disappointed because, despite ordering his chicken samosas starter in advance, when we arrived there were none left. The decor is of a poor standard but the kitchen is open for all to see so you can watch the food being prepared if you wish.Between us we had eight or nine starters followed by ten curries and sundries with just water to drink and the bill came to £93 (although they may have missed a couple of items off!!). I would call that very good value and wouldn't hesitate to return.

Having enjoyed the take-away food couriered to Shrewsbury by good friends over the past few years, it was a joy to visit the Restaurant and sample the delicious cuisine in situ. The dishes were delicious as always and the rotis freshly prepared, were superb. The service was efficient while unhurried and abundant ice cold bottles of water and lassi complemented the meal perfectly. Looking forward to another excuse to visit this fine establishment.

We read reviews and decided to try this restaurant as a change from our usual places. From the outside it looked good. We ordered two starters and two grill dishes. We waited for 45 minutes and had to ask where our food was, There were only eight people in the restaurant so it was not because it was busy. When the food came I was disapointed ,the presentation was poor and the food was to say the least was bland. The meat samosas were very shall and full of potato. The Sheesh Kababs had no flavour. The Famous Masala Fish was just alright but the Lamp Chops were tough. The restaurant was not very clean and tables were not cleared when the customers went. This is an experience I will not repeat.

This is a very basic no-frills eatery. It hardly qualifies as a restaurant as it has limited space and is packed like sardines. I agree with the other poster, don't sit near the toilet as people will constantly disturb you. The restaurant layout is very poor to say the least. The food is basic but the starters are to die for. I have been visiting this place for years, since it opened. And I always go to the place for starters; the curries are nothing worth writing home about. Of the starters, the fish masala is out of the world and I tend to have it on a nan with salad. The kabaders and mixed grill are great but are very rich/spicy. The waiters are hit and miss. There are some waiters that will tend to you properly but there are others who just dump the food on your table and are never to be seen again. I went the other week with a friend and the waiter just dumped all the starters and main course in one go. By the time we finished the starters, my friend's curry was cold. We struggled to get the waiter's attention to ask for more serviettes etc.All in all this is a simple restaurant with basic food at reasonable prices.

Went to the Punjab last weekend for the first time, as a group of 4, following a recommendation from a friend. Was really glad we did. Despite the late hour ; about 10.30pm on a Saturday night, there were a few people in there (and not just the weekend drinkers). Staff were very welcoming, our waiter was really helpful and we didn't feel rushed at all. Curries all tasted good, very fresh, well cooked and well presented. I had one of the the house specials, a lamb dish served on the bone, really impressed. Was a bit pricey compared to Bradford standards (hence the 4 rather than 5), but certainly no complains. We will definately be going back to this one.

We were recommended the Punjab Sweet House as an alternative to Mumtaz or Akbars. The food is as good quality and better value. Having read reviews on Tripadvisor, my husband had the Masala Fish and really enjoyed it. He asked for a curry recommendation and suprsisingly was told to try the Chicken Tikka Massala, Asian Style. He was really pleased he did, nothing like the shocking orange Tikka Massalas served up in some westernised curry houses. It was fragrant and flavoursome. I had the lamb chops followed by Bhindi Ghost. Both were tasty. Service was good. However the surroundings are basic and as noted by other reviews, this is a restaurant popular with local families, so if toddlers and babies making a lot of noise spoil your meal, you're best going somewhere else. The bill for two courses for two people (no drinks) was just £27.

I have been eating at his restaurant for the past 20 years, I try to come here at least once a week. My children enjoy eating here to. I love the curries especially the fish curry, I find this a relaxing place to eat in, some restaurants nowadays are too modern. This has no frills just lovely authentic food, very reasonably priced too.

Food was average. Had to wait ages before we were served and food took too long. It was fairly busy and kids were screaming a lot. The only dish I would recommend was the masala fish. It was a bit salty but perfectly cooked and delicious. Toilets were appalling and very dirty. Floor was full of water and tissues. Not a good experience.

We visited Punjab Sweet House on Saturday evening. The ground floor was full of diners and the atmosphere seemed hectic. The waiter came to our table quickly, but got our order muddled up. We never saw the poppadoms and chutney, something we were later happy about as the portions were substantial. Not so much of gravy but a lot of chicken and vegetables in Karahi chicken ginger. The curries were cooked in a lot of oil - maybe a bit too much for my taste. Everything tasted fresh and the naan was huge. There are a lot of grilled meat options on the menu. This is on the verge of very good, but as the service was a bit slow and erratic, I rate the overall experience as average.

Removal of tables since pandemic & increase in prices means it’s only used by us on rare occasions & purely at our own convenience! Before it would have been our go to. There are now better places you can go & get same quality food cooked fresh without paying heating up fee and sit in warm, comfort surroundings & feel welcomed!! Such a shame!
