I visited yesterday to buy a birthday present for my partner. I am completely clueless when it comes to coffee so the server talked me through the various products I could use for brewing and serving. She also recommended some different coffees for him to try with different flavour profiles. All in all, this was an incredibly positive experience, I now know more about coffee than I ever thought I would. Thank you to the wonderful staff at Pumphreys!

I visited Pumphreys a couple of times on a recent visit to Newcastle. It seems it is a bit of a Newcastle institution. I certainly found it a great place to while away some time with a coffee whilst chilling and people watching in Grainger Market. The house blend on this occasion was quite fruity. I did find a double shot gave the strength I was looking for. They do coffee beans/roasted to take away and I bought a kilo of their strong Italian beans. Just tried them today and it's an amazing strong coffee. Great place.

Pumphreys is a proper local company who roast their beans just a few miles away in Blaydon. The staff here are really knowledgeable and never tire of being asked about each of the coffee blends and roasts on sale. It's a great place for a quick break in the city centre.

Thank god there are companies like Pumphreys that actually make a very good cup of excellent coffee. There doesn’t seem to be a great coffee culture in Newcastle as the several coffee chain outlets were buzzing and Pumphreys quiet. . As anyone who enjoys a proper coffee will attest that the stuff they sell is pretty awful. They also have a huge range of coffee beans to buy. A must for anyone with a coffee machine. I only wish I lived in Newcastle so I could become a regular.

I came to this on recommendation from a colleague, declaring it to serve the best coffee in the area. So with that claim, I decided to visit. To my surprise, this coffee shop doesn't have a traditional seating area like most places, i.e. table and chairs, but in fact bar stools at a counter. Different but acceptable. I ordered a hot chocolate cost at £2.50. It was very nice, and I drank it quite well, but I felt that the place was designed for the staff and their friends, as a oppose to a business meant to attract customers. The atmosphere of a venue can be critical, especially for a coffee serving establishments, as there's more of a social atmosphere to it, but I felt that wasn't the case at this place, and it sapped the uniqueness it apparently has claim to. Yes the hot chocolate was nice, but the quality and cost makes no less distinctive from anywhere else.I won't be recommending this place, especially considering I saw one of the female staff members with brown hair sneezed onto some of the utensils, and didn't bother to clean her hands. Cleanliness isn't high on the agenda.

Never mind monmouth, this place is an all time favourite and one of Newcastle's gemsI first came across this place around 1985 on a trip to newcastle with my parents. When i lived in newcastle i would buy my coffee from here regularly. Great selection, expertly roasted (espresso crema is my absolute favourite) and i bougt a kilo of it when back in Newcastle recently. I discovered their website and mail order service too. Great ! While not a cafe, and not a place to sit and relax, it does have a counter and some chairs to sit and chill while you experience their coffee

Ok so being situated within the busy Grainger Market maybe not be ideal for some, but if you are after great coffee at a competitive price, head here. You sit at a counter area or can take away and the coffee is excellent, it should be as Pumphrey's are experts and suppliers of all types of teas and coffee beans or ground. Some places claim to be coffee shops but serve up drinks that are too hot or not right, but not here.I usually get a flat white and would rather spend my money here any day than give it to tax evaders like Starbucks. They also have a venue at Ryton which is even better!

Found it on google maps as needed to meet a colleague and wanted something different to Starbucks. My fault as unsuitable for any meeting, no tables, under cover but outside as in a market and in January equals cold. The coffee was great

This may be a local coffee place that roasts its own coffee and embodies the Bohemian hipster dream, but the coffee is terrible. I am all in favour of a good local business with a good story, but this place overcharges for bad coffee. I had a flat white with the house blend and got an almost undrinkably bitter cup of coffee made from over-roasted beans. My wife opted for the Pumpkin Spiced Latte and did not get the American 'Fall' classic she expected. The PSL was artificial tasting and sweet to the point it hurt the teeth. Awful, truly awful. To top it off, the service was gruff except for a smile when we left - the highlight of our experience.

Went for a quick coffee with my wife and loved it! Prices very good as we paid 4 pounds for an Americano and a cappuccino. The girl was more than happy for us to eat the cakes we bought from another shop as they don't sell any there. (Might be a good idea to start selling in the near future). They could have a couple more stools as well as they can only sit 4 people at a time.

This is a hidden gem in the Grainger Market. Pumphreys sells a wide range of coffees and teas from around the world. You can buy the coffee beans or ask for them to be ground to suit your needs. One side sells and displays the beans while the other offers a small area to sit and sample a coffee from the menu. The espresso is exquisite!

Being a coffee lover I was very happy to stumble across this place serving coffee. The last time I had visited this place was some years ago to purchase some ground coffee but after walking through noticed on the other side a small serving and seating area. Situated in the fantastic Grainger Market, this cute little coffee stall is amazing. Everything you need for the perfect coffee or tea is here...... Buy the whole beans, buy them ground or buy a cup made for you.... There are even a few stools at the counter too. If you are a really coffee/tea lover then this is the place for you! The olny downside is they serve there coffee in very small cups...... It's definitely a case of quality over quantity..... Go, Try, Love.

I don't know what's better, stopping by at their coffee bar for a superb artisan coffee, brewed by the knowledgeable and helpful staff ( who are always keen to recommend one of their monthly favourites) or nipping over to the other side of the stall to see a massive selection of coffee which you can have as much of as you like! like a pick and mix for grown ups. They have all the stuff their larger main shop in Blaydon has, but being quite central in town, it's a fantastic location for a cup of coffee on your lunch break etc. I visit often and don't see that changing.Way WAY nicer than anything found in commercial coffee shops.

The Grainger Market is a much nicer place than I remember it being - it seems to be a wonderful mixture of traditional shops, cafes and stalls with a new twist of continental style. Pumphrey's is something of a legend in the Northeast and in Newcastle in particular. It's Brewing Emporium in Newcastle's historic Grainger Market sells Pumphrey's full range of coffee beans and all manner of coffee equipment, as well as tea and other hot beverage sundries. Not only that, but it also dispenses coffee wisdom to those who wish to learn it and, to top it all, you can get a great cup of coffee, either from the espresso machine or brew bar.The market itself is a wonderful place and worth visiting in its own right. When you need a break, Pumphrey's is the ideal place to stop for a quick coffee and take the weight off your feet. However, it's also worth visiting in its own right and I really enjoyed sitting at the bar, drinking my coffee and chatting with the knowledgeable and enthusiastic baristas.
