Now, this is a very long review, but this place deserves every word! In the past Devon and Cornwall was our holiday destination every year for many, many years. The two things we always looked forward to is a lovely pasty and a 'cream tea' (scones filled with a nice jam/conserve and clotted cream, washed down with a lovely cup of tea). Now we're both retired and disabled, holidays to the Westcountry aren't possible, at least not easily. Once we found out you could order Cornish (and Devon) pasties online we had to give them a go. First, we ordered some from a place that claimed to be voted 'The best pasties in Plymouth'... Awful things, maybe 5% 'meat' (I use the term 'meat' loosely as it was mostly gristle) and thin chewy pastry. They were at least a nice size and flavoured well but there's no way we'd buy them again. That almost put us off ordering them online completely. Then, My Sister - who lived in the South West for over 40 years - told me about Proper Pasty Co. We ordered the Cornish Party Pasty & Cream Tea Hamper for 4 (4 party sized pasties and 4 scones with strawberry conserve and clotted cream, and 4 nice looking tea bags - known in Cornwall and Devon as a 'cream tea'). I was a little concerned that these 'Party Pasties' would be tiny, I shouldn't have been concerned at all! They arrived in 2 days, packed with freezer packs so they were nice and ice cold when they arrived. The pasties were actually a good size, bigger than many supermarket own brand ones, and they looked lovely. Apart from the pale colour due to the pastry being raw, they looked exactly like the photo's on the website. We followed the clear cooking instructions that came with them and popped them in the air fryer at 160c for 15 minutes, giving them a quick glaze with an egg and milk mix on the 13'th minute. Opening the air fryer door I was greeted by the gorgeous smell of a freshly cooked pasty. Now they REALLY looked like the photo's on the site. Lovely and golden. As you do, we picked them up by the crimped crust and took a big bite. Perfect! A well seasoned filling which comprised of plenty of beef and veggies. They say their pasties have around 15% beef but it honestly seemed like quite a bit more than that which we were more than happy about. The beef was perfect, not a single spec of gristle in any of the pasties. Nice and tender, not chewy at all. The veg was also perfectly cooked, not too firm and no mush in sight. Lastly, the pastry was lovely and short, flakey and the perfect thickness. I enjoyed eating the crimped edge as much as I did the main pastry with filling part! After savouring every last bite, we gave it 10 minutes before we moved on to our cream tea. The 4 scones came with 4 generous little pots of good quality strawberry conserve and a good sized little tub of clotted cream. Although we actually spent most of our holidays in Devon, we have our scones the Cornish way. Cut in half, clotted cream on each half first, then the conserve on top (the Devon method is jam first but it's harder to master as you can end up pushing the jam off the scone while trying to spread the nice thick clotted cream on top of it). All I can say is 'Wow'! The scones themselves tasted as though they'd just been baked and left to cool a couple of hourse before. Still a little moist, buttery, and none of that 'powdery chemical' aftertaste you get with most mass produced shop bought scones (most likely due to them using too much cream of tartar). The strawberry conserve provided was top notch too, packed with fruit and bursting with flavour. Same again with the clotted cream, very good quality and I could feel my waist size increasing just looking at the stuff! All put together it was amazing and compared quite well to little family owned cream tea places we found randomly driving down country roads while on holiday. Absolutely perfect! After stuffing our faces with all that, we of course had to wash it down with the provided tea. Nice and refreshing, a good palate cleanser. It finished off a great meal, so great I had to get online and write this rather lengthy and glowing review. That's just how happy it made me (and my husband and son who also enjoyed every last morsel. The only thing missing from this review is photos. I don't write many reviews, especially food reviews, so taking pictures before we stuffed our faces simply didn't occur to us (and we didn't know how impressed with the food we would be). Would we order from them again? Well, after reading the above I think you can guess the obvious answer to that question. Now to copy and paste this review everywhere else. :-D

Pastry is like cardboard. Not worth the money I requested years ago after my first bad experience with the proper pastry company to remove me from their email list. Then this september they emailed me again. I tried my best to find the location of the company because if it was the pasty company in Whitby I never wanted to place an order again. With them. Unfortunately I placed an order with them and regret it when I received the order from Whitby. Whitby is not in Cornwall. How can they markey Cornish Pasty

We had pasties from here four years ago whilst on holiday in Whitby, we returned two years ago and was disappointed that it was closed. We were delighted yesterday when we arrived to see it open again. My husband and I shared a meat pastie and a cheese and onion pastie today and they were just as delicious as before. So happy to see them back. Maybe not as good as a proper Cornish pastie but couldn’t fault them.

The coffee was just dreadful. Bitter, utterly unpleasant and highly overpriced. Oh I appreciate it’s on Marine Parade but please - I sat in, why was I given a paper cup? Not very environmentally friendly is it? Small small cup for £3.10. No atmosphere. I try very hard to use and support local business wherever I go but the Costa just around the corner is far far superior. Coffee is not difficult to get right, they had the right machine, the barista made a pretty pattern on the foam. But hells bells- it’s vital the coffee is drinkable! Never ever again. I suspect this place totally relies on single hit custom as I can’t imagine a local visiting more than once.

A Cornish Pasty is supposed to be half meat and a mix of swede and potato. If said pasty is described as ‘Cornish Steak’, it is not unreasonable to expect good quality meat. Nicky’s (the Dobermann) dinner had significantly more meat that the product from Proper Pasties in Cornwall. The sausage roll had the texture of MRM (mechanically recovered meat). Very disappointing, and one to avoid.

On our last night in Whitby we wanted a traditional meal of pasty mash & peas. We went out our way to search for a good pasty & I could or wait to try the steak & Stilton. We ordered steak & Stilton, steak & ale & chicken curry. Sadly when we sat down for our meal we were gutted to discover that not one of them was what we ordered. They were all just the basic standard pasty with meat potato & veg in them. I would of returned to complain if we had not been leaving the next morning. Staff really need to get the pasties right that they are putting on display. Yes the pasty was good enough, nice pastry but not at all what we wanted.

Visited Proper Pasty Co in Whitby on Thursday 17th September, 2020, whilst on holiday in Scarborough. The cafe is nicely situated at Marine Parade. The pasties here are great, having eaten a few Cornish pasties in Cornwall they are identical. Very tasty when bought hot from the door. The staff are very pleasant. Beware though if you stand and eat them around the walkway the seagulls will dive bomb you...my husband was dive bombed and the seagull snatched what was left of his pastie and knocked his sunglasses off

The pasties were good, the grandchildren enjoyed the pizza and I enjoyed my jacket potato with a vegetarian chilli filling. Although the cafe does not have a customer toilet, the serving staff kindly allowed me to use the staff toilet. Thanks for that. We would be happy to call again when in Whitby.

We popped in for a breakfast pasty and a large sausage roll on the way to the beach. We sat inside and the food was really nice. My son thought the sausage roll was really tasty. The service was friendly and it was a good price at £4.35 for both for the quality and to eat at a table instead of takeaway. Really impressed and we’ll be back! My husband is a big pasty fan and he’s not had a breakfast pasty before - he loved it! My only request for it to be any better is for them to sell gluten free pasties so I can have one 😊

The pasty's looked and smelt delicious. They were piping hot so we took them back to our apartment to eat there. To be fair my hubby's Steak and Stilton was very nice, large with plenty of filling. However I went for the Sweet Potato and Feta and that pasty was considerably smaller than the other and someone had forgot to put any Feta in it. The pastry was nice but overall very disappointing and at £4+ not cheap either.

The title more or less says it all - well not really. The food is delicious and melts in your mouth - not any old sausage roll outfit. We had cappuccinos with probably the best, an extra long cheese and onion hot dog for me at £1.40 and one of the best home baked style (i.e. not dry/insipid) flapjacks for my partner at £1.95. Very reasonable price especially considering the quality and definitely considering the perfect viewing vantage point. The staff were well used to advising customers about options and they also have a little take away service via a smaller window area. A little gem which has not been around so long - may it still be there next time we come. They're obviously determined to maintain high standards which deserves all the recognition it gets.

Being vegetarian, there were 3 pasty options: cheese and onion, spicy vegetable, wholemeal vegetable. This was slightly annoying because I dislike the onion in cheese and onion pasties, yet I don't eat spicy food (so the second option was a no) and the wholemeal pasties didn't look very nice. So I settled with cheese and onion, although I would have preferred a regular vegetable pasty, which you'd think wouldn't be too much to ask for. The pasty was nice, although I wasn't overly keen on the filling (that's just down to my fussiness). My boyfriend had the same and really enjoyed his. Staff were friendly enough and let me use their staff toilet! Sauces, cutlery and napkins were provided, so if you wanted to be a more civilised pasty eater, you could be!

Bought four pasties as a "pasty deal". The pastry was tasty, as were the fillings. However, I would have liked more filling - I think the price per unit of about £3 (when bought as a single pasty) justified this. This pasty looks big but there is a lot of pastry.

We've had a long conversation about these! Some of my family really loved their pasty, while others just thought it was okay. Either way everyone ate them, and they were fairly cheap too.

When a pasty store is always busy and you need to queue to buy food, you know it's good.

We arrive in Whitby thinking about a late light lunch, and are nearly resigned to having fish and chips like everyone else, when we come across this place. A good selection of pasties, although I am surprised that my choice comes from Cornwall! But it is tasty, and there are sauces on the table. We decide to continue with coffee and cake which is also very satisfying. No frills here, but seating for 20, and windows that look out over the river. Worth looking for in terms of variety.

Shocked by the cost of what turned out to be a very average product when expecting something special. Just like a chain.

Considering how dry the pasty was from sitting under the heating unit it should at least have been hot. Luke warm, tasteless. It's hard to find something other than fish and chips along the row, but walk past this one.

visited here on out last trip to Whitby. Thought we would grab a quick snack as we had the kids with us. We sat inside. Staff were friendly and welcoming. Kids enjoyed the sausage rolls. Pasties were good.

Very basic staff not friendly and the pasties were horrible we ended up leaving them, I would not recommend going. The staff didn't seem to want to talk unless absolutely necessary, very quiet we were the only ones in there,

I don’tknow if this place is any good. After 15 minutes waiting at the bar, only 1 person got served - by the 2 staff. The 1 ‘serving’ then left 6 of us waiting and went outside to wipe down tables. Rude, surly, we up and left.

I came here during each visit from Canada and we were just getting ready to return again. I am just shocked to find out that they have closed permanently and I can only live with my memories. I wanted to bring my wife there for what I hoped would be another incredible weekend. I can only hope the very best for the family and say thanks for all of the memories and the fantastic bar towels that I still have after 20 years Thank you. Muchas gracias. Hvala, arrigoto, Merci,

We had a nice English breakfast for the start of our walk. Not the best ever perhaps, but enjoyable and open at 7:30. Prices are reasonable, but cash only

We had the unfortunate "luck" of spending a night at this place. Got a "suite" under the creaky flooring of the pub with noise-channelling ventilation ducts overhead, a substandard kitchen with no cupboards and wobbly table, a toilet with no ventilation, exposed pipes and disjointed faucet and a door with no handle in sight... All this came with a delayed check-in and service that leaves much to hope for. While the rooms above the pub may make for a better night's sleep, there is little hope that could improve this establishment's culture of hospitality.

What’s really interesting about this cafe is that it’s part of the now closed second funicular tram at the top. Loved the Yorkshire owner of the cafe ☕️. Great bacon rolls before we checked into The Grand next door 🚪 (which we liked ❤️ too)
