Proper Gander in Gwynedd

What a shame! We have met here several times over the years and came for our usual lovely meal at the Proper Gander! However what a disappointment, starting with our waitress who to be honest looked as if she couldn’t be bothered 😕 The food was ok but the menu wasn’t as extensive as before! We ordered Cheese and Biscuits and the side plates arrived wet! 😏 The restaurant was very empty so we really hope they are not relying on the great evenings with the Masterchef experiences which we have been to and are amazing! Anyway the waitress livened up later in the evening and let’s be honest we all have bad days! But our overall feeling is …..Come on don’t give up, heads up we need you guys in Tywyn you normally are brilliant and we need you to continue to be so! 😉

I was really looking forward to visiting this restaurant but unfortunately the experience didn’t live up to my expectations. We arrived as a party of 9. The first shock was the menu had changed - but not on their website (old menu still online). The pork belly we were looking forward to was no longer an option … ok so we selected items on the new menu ( there aren’t many selections) only to be told there was no pork chops and then sometime later was then told there was no beef ragu either, so one of our party ended up having a ‘burger’ when she was looking forward to the pork belly and had run out of options. My smallest child ordered some chips (he’s 9) we had to wait 1 hour 20 mins for our starters. They didn’t bring the little man his chips so he had to wait another 20 minutes, only to be presented with the smallest bowl of chips I’ve seen. The rest of the party ordered Rib Eye steaks, Lamb, Chicken Goujons, Pasta and a Burger. Generally the food was good but not a lot for the money and the excessive waiting. Btw the restaurant was not full. The Rib Eye contained gristle normally you would expect this to be rendered. Ok so it’s not all negative, the Garlic Bread was excellent, the spring rolls were tasty and because of the wait we had 3 deserts free and the cheesecake was lush. The waitress was very pleasant. For the meal we had, the lack of options, the unexpected menu change, the extreme waiting times and the cost - I have to say I’m disappointed

Went as a family of 3 with one nut allergy and one gf. There were no allergens on the menu and the staff were not clued up on what was gf or nut free. The dining experience was therefore impacted as it took about 3 back and fourths to the kitchen to check what had what in it for each course. Staff made it feel like it was a real faff which i’m sure in a busy restaurant it is but it heavily impacted the experience. Left feeling deflated. However, on a positive note the food produced was enjoyable and would recommend to anyone that had no dietary requirements.

The food was freshly cooked and tssted delicious and the service excellent. Thoroughly enjoyed our meal. We were only customers and background music a tad loud.

What an amazing gem of a find. The food was excellent: Black Pudding Croquettes with apple ketchup to start, lamb rump & steak for mains and white chocolate & raspberry cheesecake and chocolate brownie for pudding. The service was brilliant, staff were attentive, and nothing was too much trouble. I can honestly say it was the best meal we have had for as long as we can remember & would highly recommend a visit. My partner said the steak was better than Gouchos. Thank you so much, we will return on our next holiday to Wales 😊

Lovely restaurant, my fiancée and I along with our 2 toy cockapoo’s (dogs friendly) enjoyed a romantic meal last night. I enjoyed the seafood linguine while my partner devoured the ribeye steak! The waitress Sapphire (sorry if I’ve butchered the spelling) was absolutely lovely, the right mix of attentive but not overbearing! Definitely worth booking a table if you are in the area!

A lovely restaurant in the heart of Tywnn - a great find! We came to meet old friends here, who live locally, and Proper Gander was a great experience. The service was brilliant, with our waitress giving us lots of recommendations and good wine pairings. The food was presented fantastically, for which I’m ashamed I have no pictures, but the taste of most of the dishes was a bit bland for my taste (and I’m quite salt sensitive!) Overall a great place, and we will be back!

Overall, an enjoyable if fairly expensive meal but the restaurant atmosphere was affected by the lack of guests - and, strangely, by us needlessly being directed to sit too close to another couple. The belly pork, though tasty, was obviously the shop bought-style thin slices rather than the more traditional square serving of actual belly pork - presumably becuase they are quicker & easier to cook. We chose this restaurant in preference to the other highly reviewed on in Tywyn, largely as the menu was a little less "fish/seafood-centred". We may try the other one next time we are visiting the area.

Booked in tonight for a meal for 2 coming from a food business owner, but this place has exceeded my expectations and was absolutely stunning food and service was 10 out of 10. hubby said best meal in 2 years supurb

High quality restaurant in the heart of Twywn.

A pleasant atmosphere and attentive staff. The lamb main course was a real highlight. Our starters were nice enough but would have benefitted from more seasoning. With fine dining sized portions, an option to order additional vegetables would have been very welcome. We would certainly like to visit again. Thank you.

Extremely impressed with the food, very tasty, well presented and great portions. A varied menu for all tastes, unusual and delicious dishes to choose from. Staff were friendly and there was a lovely atmosphere. Although small, very cosy with good décor and music. Extremely sophisticated at reasonable prices, perfect for any occasion. Would highly recommend!

Our food - steak or roast lamb - was of first-class quality. The raspberry cheesecake was to die for! The restaurant is cozy and the service is attentive and friendly.

Dog friendly (downstairs), wonderful staff, lovely atmosphere and delicious food. The cheesecake could have made me cry, it was that delicious. I'm annoyed we shared it. The staff are so lovely, huge thank you to our server! There was noone else downstairs when we dined so they let us use the Alexa to play music we wanted to hear. The dog was very happy sat under the table and there was a water bowl provided. Would recommend trying the local gins. We didn't try the local whiskeys but would love to next time. I had cod and potatas bravas and my partner had the pork belly. Unreal. Would recommend booking if its a busier day of the week but they were really accommodating and lovely.

My first time here, great service was seated straight away, lovely staff, food was amazing, I take my hat off to the chef, outstanding quality, great atmosphere, very very well done to all.

This restaurant should be allowed into the top section of food services. We were celebrating our 50th anniversary and we were totally spoiled with the quality of the food presented to us this evening. It was easily the equivalent of eating at 5 star Michelin restaurants. It was a wonderful calming place to eat. I will be describing the values of Proper Gander to everyone I speak to for the next 12 months. We are already planning to come back again in the near future. Lovely restaurant, one of the best in the area, easily accessible on foot from most places in the town. Food first class easily matched by the service. Staff on hand if needed but gave the space to enjoy your meal at a leisurely pace. Perfect way to celebrate our anniversary.

I had a really difficult time trying to book this restaurant which rather soured our experience a bit before we'd even been. I tried to book on the website but when I got no response I sent an email. This also was not responded to so I phoned. The phone was answered and when I tried to explain I was rudely told 'if you tried to book in the last two hours we are too busy to reply '. I explained that it was over the last two weeks! Each time I tried to book I said that I needed a Gluten Free meal. When we went to the restaurant there was obviously a shortage of staff with one waitress covering the whole restaurant. I asked about a Gluten Free menu and was informed that I could have the olives or prawns for a starter but there was no bread to accompany them. The waitress said that if I'd informed them in advance they would have got some bread in! I explained that I had tried very hard to inform them. She tootled off to talk to the chef and he did rustle me up some lovely pan fried scallops with chutney which was tasty but didn't really go with the fish. My husband and I both had lamb which was very nice if slightly overcooked. We liked the restaurant and would recommend it but they do need to sort out the booking systems on their website and recruit more staff for it to be a real fine dining experience. After all they are charging fine dining prices.

Starters and desserts really poor. Main course was good. I’ve never eaten somewhere where there was such disparity in quality between courses. The starters could have been put together by anyone and were poor quality. The dessert tasted shop brought (not even warmed). The main was cooked well. When I fed this back to the waitress she said she wasn’t surprised? Why not change it then?! Sadly wouldn’t recommend or return.

Came here for a meal to celebrate our engagement, very welcoming and nicely styled place. The food was amazing we highly recommend the curried prawns, pork belly and cheesecake. Service was great, while the lady was alone on service couldn't fault, the draft beer did run out which was a bit down but didn't effect meal otherwise

Had high expectations after reading the reviews but was left very disappointed. One of the pork bellies was nearly black in the middle and looked and tasted off. The other was not cooked well - very greasy/sloppy rather than crispy, as it should be. Risotto was drenched in balsamic vinegar and what appeared to be mint sauce - these do not go together and the whole thing tasted awful. Poor quality cooking at very expensive prices! Would never return.

This is a lovely place for a special meal, or just food at any time, will be going again in the near future.

Fantastic. 15 of us, 6 kids, on a Thursday evening and every single dish was perfect. The service was absolutely amazing too. What a brilliant place, 100% recommend!

Delicious food, highly recommended

Lovely restaurant. We particularly enjoyed the nibbles (honey glazed almonds and olives) and the main dishes were flavoursome and well seasoned. It was a little quiet when we went (Sunday evening) so the atmosphere was somewhat lacking. But there was good music playing and the staff were professional. This was the first night of our honeymoon and we really enjoyed the sunset from the beach after the meal.

Food to die for, great service and atmosphere! This is a gem of a restaurant and worth every penny!

We've just had the most amazing meal at Proper Gander! The food was to die for (they have a varied menu, but also a daily starter and main course), the service was fantastic (giving you just the right amount of time to order and in between courses), modern decor and great atmosphere without feeling packed. Huge well done to the chef and all the staff and we wish you all the success - you deserve it!

Sadly we felt fobbed off. Serving a self-evidently mass produced dessert after two truly outstanding courses was a depressing end to what would otherwise have been an excellent meal. The cooking at this little restaurant is excellent. One of the best lamb dishes ever and lots of attention to detail with the fish and ravioli, so the chef clearly knows what she/he is doing. So why round off with a grim pudding that was barely up to cheap supermarket standards? A cost cutting exercise which seems so very unfortunate. Is it that you think customers won’t notice?! We’d have been back with pleasure every holiday had this not happened.

What a truly brilliant place to start our holiday! The service we received was efficient and we felt well looked after. The food was amazing especially the scallops and cheesecake! Would definitely recommend to anyone for a special occasion or even just for a meal out.

We were looking for something a little special and dog friendly and after giving up on finding anything in Aberdovey where we were staying, we took a chance on a Friday night table at this place. No words to describe how accommodating, friendly and inviting this restaurant is with seating downstairs for those with dogs. The food was amazing and flavoursome. Wine wonderful and ale exceptional. A big thank you to Kelly as our host. We felt most at home and only wish this gem was closer to home.

My pasta dish though nice was way too large. The prawns were, in my opinion well overcooked & the whole dish far too wet with pasta sauce and strong tasting which masked everything else. The waitress was very considerate and friendly. Bring dog friendly was a bonus as we were on holiday. Background music 👍

The only complaint I would have is that my wine was not chilled enough and the bottled beer was warm. Maybe the need to invest in a blast chiller. 🤔

Fantastic food ... Only gripe was that they ran out of one of the dishes I wanted but since everything else we had was great, I soon forgot about that.

Great food with dog friendly space for dinner. The fish of the day (hake) with chorizo and butterbean stew was really tasty, super generous portion too. The salted caramel brownie with cookie crumble & ice cream was 10/10.

Chef / owner is from Romania, he has an open door to the excellent kitchen, all fresh local food, I had Romanian vino, (first time,)it was excellent, fairly priced, rump of lamb was spot on, as were the starters of spring rolls, plenty to share, dessert 🍨 🥧 well we liked our plates, what more can we say, we'll be back on next visit, thank you all to the friendly , helpful staff.

Booked on impulse and was very impressed with the lovely food. Atmosphere was very relaxed and the service was great. Would recommend.

We ate here a couple of times last year when in the area and really enjoyed it. Hence first port of call on our return. Very different experience. No king prawns so substituted with chicken. It was just okay. Nothing special and still charged as a king prawn dish!! Breaded chicken was dry and served with nasty frozen chips. Side salad was identical to the one served with the starter. No sense of imagination or care felt. Most of the meal was taken away uneaten but there was no comment from the kitchen. Waitress said they were too busy to make proper chips!!! Not sure if change of ownership or maybe chefs night off. We were booked to go again on Wednesday but will be cancelling the booking. Such a shame.

This is a lovely business. I've been so impressed by most of the businesses in this lovely little village, impressed because they provide really good quality at good prices and they've made themselves diverse. Proper Gander is a brilliant example of this. Downstairs it's a smart café, takeaway and cool place to be, upstairs it's a very good restaurant. The food is very good, great quality beautifully prepared and presented. The service was brilliant, friendly and professional. This is well worth a visit. We had good wine which pushed the price up, but you don't have to, so please don't be put off.

Squid starter tasty and tender. A bit overwhelmed by the chilli source if you wanted to taste the squid. Partners duck salad was tasty too but was burried in too many salad leaves. Homemade burger had wonderful briosh bun but beef too salty so bacon was redundant. Good choice of wines. Neither of us had room for sweets.

After finding everywhere else fully booked, we took a chance and honestly could not believe this place wasn't either!
