We did not stay in the hotel but came to watch the wrestling which was in the ballroom. We use the bars and stayed to watch the evening entertainment a brilliant singer. The bar service was brilliant and everyone was enjoying there stay. I would definitely recommend the hotel which is in a lovely location.

Few people dining at lunchtime buffet, but all where complaining loudly about the standard and quality of the food. Sadly this used to be a really good lunchtime three course meal. Now it is a waste of money for awful food that has been badly cooked . Have frequented the lunchtime busses for 12 years, bit I Won’t be returning.

Wasn't even going to write a review, but 2 emails and a request on twitter for someone to contact me about the farce of our weekend 6-8 December have gone ignored, thought I'd share our experience after all. Check in was good, the lady that attended to us was the only positive thing about this hotel, shame she was off after the Friday night. Our room 232 was clean but cold, no heating on, we had to turn the valve on the ancient radiator ourselves, soon warmed up. Bathroom was freezing, couldn't turn that radiator on, we asked the front desk on our way out to send someone to try and fix it. They did, but they didn't fix the radiator, they actually turned off the radiator in our bedroom and left the door open so all the heat escaped.. We were actually thinking of sleeping in the hallway as the temperature outside was about 40 degrees. Bathroom was clean but towels were no bigger than a hand towel, only supplied one, had to ask for another.. We had to use same two towels all weekend as our room was never cleaned.. Restaurant. We could choose 6 or 7pm for our dining time on arrival so we chose 6pm. Went down slightly early to have a pre dinner drink, on entrance to the restaurant we had to wait in a queue as there were no seats, our food was self service from a small island in the centre of the room. Not a great selection, food cold and by 6.15 they'd run out of some things, we were told there was no more and substituted tuna/mayonnaise for a bowl of potato salad. Not great when there was another sitting at 7pm. Also run out of desserts and cream by 6.25, I asked the waitress if there was anymore and she came back with a frozen cherry bakewell tart that we couldn't cut, I asked her to take it back and get one we could cut please, she snatched it out of my hands and turned to her co worker and spoke in a foreign language.. I asked her to speak in English so I could understand what she was saying.. I went to see the manager on duty and asked him to source some desserts explaining what had just happened.. Which he did, he actually came to our table with 2 desserts for us which was a nice touch. Breakfast. Not great, poached eggs were like rubber and yolks were hard, bacon all lumped together.. Weetabix or muesli was the cereal choice, and you had to wait an age to use the only 1 toaster they had.. Our Christmas party meal sat night. Was terrible, all sat down by 7.45.. Waited nearly 50 mins for my melon starter, which was cut as thin as a cigarette paper, also rind had been left on, was nothing to eat once rind cut away, I asked for something else in it's place. Prawn cocktail was served on a tea plate with bread stuck on top. Main meal was very poor, our table of 13 was the last to be served.. Not one plate looked the same, carrots to no carrots as they'd run out apparently, and they were tinned as well.. 3 roasts to one roast on another and they were frozen. Stuffing ball that was frozen and rock hard, beef that was full of fat, no gravy on some plates.. Our table asked to speak to manager, who wouldn't come to our table, so one of our party took his plate of uneaten food over to the manager and asked him if he thought that was acceptable? Desserts came at 10.35, tiniest piece of Christmas pudding and a spoon of custard was our offering.. Coffee by 11. Table was hardly cleared all night, there was a table behind a curtain so we kept putting our dishes on there. Not enough staff for how many people were sitting down to eat. There were wristbands for 2 for 1 drinks, that system never worked right, both nights we were all told different rules and that caused problems in itself.. Good job Wetherspoons are across the road. Breakfast was the same Sunday morning, we were checking out for 10am, couldn't wait to go home. The reason for my review, this is the 3rd time we've stayed at this hotel, for the same Turkey Tinsel weekend, and by far, this was the worst. We have no redress, the Britannia chain won't acknowledge my emails, they've had the money so they don't care.. Should have known better to book again, we stayed at their hotel in Liverpool (Adelphi) for same Turkey Tinsel weekend in 2017 and that was just as bad.. We love Southport and shall return, just not to the Prince of Wales.

We where In the attic with a big stain on ceiling but that apart the room was clean and telly big. Breakfast good but evening not so much. 2 for 1 bar was good if you can get served. The girl on bar only liked serving the guys up the one end and after a wait I asked for service which I got begrudgingly maybe they are good tippers 😂😂special mention to Emma who always had a smile and was very helpful.would I go again. Stayed here with quite a large group. A few of us had a couple of issues with certain members of staff. However three of them were incredible every problem we through their way was sorted within 10 minutes and with a smile and a massive willingness to help attitude which can't be said for some of the staff. I only caught two of the names Carly (This one was far and away the best of the lot) Emma (Nothing but helpful however wasn't given as many issues as Carly) and a young blonde lass on reception (Very friendly and willing to deal with everything in a very professional manner). If you say here make sure if you have any issues go and find one of these three! The hotel is beautiful but a little confusing on the first night! Entertainment was pretty good! Food was piping hot and very filling and the 2 for 1 bar was brilliant once you learn the rules (Should be a sign up somewhere of what's allowed and what's not) overall it was a good stay if you speak to the right people!

such a beautiful building, being left to rot away, such a shame. Breakfast was not great as everything was bulk cooked, bacon congealed into one lump & black pudding was like chewing on gravel. Found some staff rude & unfriendly, a polite smile cost nothing, (must however give a shout out to Carly on front of house, very friendly & helpful, unfortunately Carly is the only possitive point I can make about our stay). Room was very dated & basic, like hotel, such a shame & waste of a beautiful original decore. Sorry, we wont be returning.

Well, I remember this hotel in the "buzzing" 1970s, and it isn't that place any longer... but it does retain something of those old times, in the service. We had to find somewhere at very short notice, due to a family crisis, and the Prince of Wales turned out to be that place. I'm happy to say, they accommodated us in every way, from the outset, when receptionist Carly made our check-in so easy, with her friendly manner, after a tiring and unexpected journey. We now look forward to returning for leisure purposes (next time).

In its prime this must have been a lovely hotel sadly time has not been kind to it. A substantial investment is required to bring ut up to average. The carpark and garden which is used as a smoking area was untidy with litter present and unkempt borders. The staff are helpful and welcoming sadly the hotel rooms aren't. They are very tired and in need of fully updating. Fittings and furnishings were worn and damaged, I stayed in two rooms, windows couldn't be closed and net curtains worn torn and dirty. Breakfast was a cheap buffet. Fried eggs cooked in one batch, over 30 of them, and left under heat . I was only person there at 0730hrs. Cheap sausages, not sure if they had meat in them, that had been deep fried, along with the fried bread and hash browns. Tinned tomatoes. Overcooked and dry bacon and black pudding. All if it left overvheat and under heat lamps so very dry. Coffee was instant. Overall I cant recommend this hotel.

Came here for 1 night, I had read good and bad reviews on this hotel, so I thought I would give it a try, the staff are welcoming and friendly, the entrance hall is lovely and clean and spacious, the lift was broken but there was what I presume was the staff lift which we could use. We eventually found our room on the 3rd floor, the room itself was very clean but very old fashioned, the bed was very uncomfortable so I didn’t get much sleep,. The shower was ok but again very old fashioned and the toilet rocked from side to side. This hotel probably was once a beautiful place but over the years sadly it’s fallen into disrepair, although it was clean and tidy I can’t see myself staying here again unfortunately , such a shame. I can’t comment on the food as we didn’t eat there although breakfast smelt lovely,.

Went into residents & public lounge for a dinnertime drink. Grandiose building with an impressive outside (front) area. The lounge is pretty good and in better condition than some of those in other Britannia hotels, so it is well worth popping in to experience this feature. The stained glass windows are interesting and trying to figure out the patterns & symmetry takes some doing. However! Very subdued atmosphere as those who had just come out of the dining room seemed very 'down' and some were downright grumpy with each other - not a happy place! Perhaps just 'one of those days'. Residents have to pay to park their car on hotel grounds - have not seen that before. Well worth a visit to relax & take in the building/lounge but I can't comment on rooms/food/service etc.We certainly enjoyed the visit and will definitely go again when in Southport.

Booked for us unfortunately so we had to stay as our group were there but it is dire. The photos the Hotle puts on it's website must be touched up, customer's photos can't show how bad this place really is. Breakfast was a joke, only one poor lady trying to clear and relay tables, no tea or coffee then no cups, nasty sausages, dried up egg, watery porridge and do not look at the actual servery cabinet, held together, or rather bodged together with old bits of wood and nailed up. The dining room chairs are covered in black stretchy covers, l think that's what stops them collapsing! The bedroom we had was so tired it needed putting out of it's misery, dirty blotchy wallpaper peeling off the wall, rotting window frames and faded carpet, holes had been bodged over on top of the wallpaper, the bed was hard and the quilt so thin we kept our dressing gowns on to sleep in as the draft came through the window frames! The 'bath' towel was so tiny it wouldn't go round my body, all in all a grotty grim place to stay.

My wife and I were given a Groupon voucher as a gift for 'Afternoon Tea for Two' at the Prince of Wales Hotel. We've had numerous afternoon tea's over the years and really enjoyed the experience on each occasion and as a result we were really looking forward to this one. What a let down; On entering the hotel you suddenly realise that this hotel is probably beyond a mere refurbishment and probably needs knocking down... the decor, carpets, fixtures and fittings are awful, how people actually stay here beggars belief! Anyway, we were directed to the bar for our pre-booked afternoon tea and asked to take a seat. That was the first dilemma... the seats are so worn and dirty we had to walk around the bar to find two seats we were prepared to sit on. To cut a long story short, the afternoon tea arrived and consisted of (bearing in mind this is for two people) one small obviously frozen/defrosted scone cut in half, squirty cream in a bowl with some jam, one cup cake cut in half, a small piece of sponge cake also cut in half plus half a strawberry and one mini macaroon. The sandwiches consisted of a cheese slice sandwich, a salmon spread one and a boiled ham one, all cut into fingers. That's it! Nothing more! For the price we know this voucher cost (£21.95) it was appalling and what we were given was of an extremely poor quality!

However the building itself is very rundown and in need of urgent tlc. We were staying on the 3rd floor. The lift is tiny and will only take 3 average sized adults at anytime. We witnessed a bucket under leaking pipes on the corridor. The dining room carpet, walls, radiators and furniture were dirty with years of grime and food. The walls looked like pin the Donkey was a regular game played. I expect it comes from years of Christmas decorations. Real shame could be something grand with time. Care and investment.

An ageing , somewhat faded grandeur adds atmosphere that is quite enchanting. Staff are really helpful and friendly, nothing is too much trouble. Rooms are clean and basic, if in need of decoration. Overall, very comfortable with a good buffet menu for breakfast and evening meals.

Saw the board outside hotel today, so thought for £7 would try it. We asked at bar where it was said it was in the room behind and we paid for the meal there but would we like to go and see if we liked what was on offer. We did and paid. There was a soup and a salad bar, also some glasses and some cold water. Main meal was chicken, veg, roast potato, pasta in sauce, rice and chicken strips in breadcrumbs. Dessert was cheese cake, lemon tart or rice pudding. Everything was fine and would recommend yes as some have said the hotel does need work, it actually reminded me of the hotel in the The Halycon and how it probably was like that in years gone by.

Buffet lunch set out in a very crammed area. Soup or salad starter. Ham, liver in gravy or very dry fish pieces in breadcrumbs for mains and two choices for dessert. Not great and staff not very helpful.. No glasses for water on tables and had to ask for a glass to get water yourself from the machine. No tea or coffee machine was off.

Just passing, saw three course lunch sign. Check it out with a drink first. Looked at food selection and decided to try it. Pleasently surprised. Food was hot and good quality. Dear oh dear, where to start? Only gave one mark because there is no zero option. Booked a night away over the bank holiday to celebrate our wedding anniversary. Things started badly when we arrived a little after 3PM to be told brusquely to come back in half an our as our room was not ready (check in from 3PM) on booking. Duly went back at 3.30PM and queued for an hour to finally check in and pay £91 for our stay in an "executive double room"(including £4.00 to park on the hotel car park). Went to our room on the floor and walked into 1972! Not sure I have the descriptive powers to give the full impression but here goes: the bathroom to the left was huge but contained a suite and tiles scavenged from Steptoe's yard and the shower head appeared to be held together with gaffer tape, add in a boarded up window and the loudest extractor fan ever registered (perhaps as it struggled to turn past the accumulated filth) and you get the picture. Now for the room itself, we were give room 100 which is directly over the main entrance and may well have been a grand edifice sixty or seventy years ago but boy what a disaster now. Dirty, ripped carpet, a wardrobe last seen on the antiques roadshow, and two single camp beds pushed together to form our double! The most worrying thing however was the fire exit sign above what appeared to have once been a connecting door to the neighbouring room but was now boarded up! A rotten night on the uncomfortable camp beds meant we were up bright and early to partake of our pre-booked buffet breakfast. Surely no problems here but wait, the Basil Fawlty like bouncer on the restaurant door refused us entry as we had not paid! My wife went back to our room to fetch our confirmation as I waited like a naughty schoolboy in front of bemused fellow guests. When proof was duly provided this comical character then stalked off to an office by reception and came back to usher us rudely into the dining room. Breakfast itself began swimmingly but ended badly when my wife started to heave having found her fried egg to be off! That was the final straw, we checked out well before the appointed ten o'clock deadline and we have never been so happy to leave anywhere! This is only our experience obviously, but fellow gusts were complaining to management at various times and being ignored. What a shame, this could be a great hotel as perhaps it once was but an enormous amount of money would have to be spent so don't hold your breath!

My wife and I together with two friends visited the POW for the Sunday Carvery. The cost of a three course meal was £7:00 and in fairness it was really good value for money. OK the hotel probably needs a face-lift but the cost of running these establishments must be astronomical. I cannot for the life of me think why the Wetherspoon pub over the road rates over 100 places higher than this hotel. Does Wetherspoon provide a good quality and hot three course roast Sunday lunch for £7:00.......NO. Enough said.

We have visited the Prince of Wales several times, and we like it, an excellent position, fabulous sitting area, and adequate rooms. We had not been for a few years, however, and even though this is not a 5* hotel, they have some good deals, and we are not over fussy expecting luxury from a budget hotel, this time I felt a little short changed. The room we were initially given, I think it was 216, was awful. Cramped, down a dingy corridor, fittings looking suspect (including electrical), frosted window looking out onto inside ‘courtyard’. It was grubby and shoddy, the only decent thing was a 32“ TV.

We have been here several times before but was the worst ever stay. The hotel seems to be cutting corners everywhere. Buffet meals were unusual to say the least. Nothing went together. staff were slow to fill up dishes -often no butter, no eggs -tea and coffee on the tables at breakfast was very cool. No fresh fruit and watered down yoghurt. Not sure where the tea bags were from but so very weak and only limited supply in bedrooms - we went out and purchased our own! Come on Prince of Wales you must improve or loose business.

I have been attending this hotel twice yearly for many years, as an Honorary Life Member, of the 'Lancashire Social Circle', a group that have two annual functions there in March and November. Although only forty strong, the group (who all have Pigeon Racing' as their hobby) bring visitors from far afield - Scotland, Wales, London, the East side of the country and all areas in between. In total we have about 140 present at our dinners such is the stature of this group, established about 111 years ago. The Hotel manager is fine and helps our secretary in every way possible. However there is one problem that has not been resolved, which is the horrendous sound system operating in the main function room. A Friday night comedian was virtually inaudible by an estimated 90% of those present! I feel that it is now time for the 'Britannia Group' to address this issue and resolve it. When the European Space Station can speak to individuals on the ground, surely it should be possible for a comedian to be heard across a crowded room! If you have a 'grand event' think twice before using this large and splendid room, until you have checked out its acoustics.

Lovely staff - very hospitable. Food great & rooms were lovely. Car parking abysmal but able to park on road outside for £4 until 11 next day. When i came back in to get the old folk from their various rooms & get their bags (no porters) in & out of the 1 slow / slow lift! I didn't pay for parking as i didn't realise there was a time limit on picking a party of people up (car park less busy at that time on a Sunday & plenty of room to park) Anyway long story short got a £60 fine & the hotel staff NOT interested - they couldn't intervene even though I felt it was down to their lack of help in placing people nearby each other / having worst & busiest lift in the world AND not having anyone to help me get the gear, the people & the party stuff in to the car.............

We stayed in order to have an overnight stay following a function in the ballroom. On arrival - unable to park in the hotel car park. Yes- I've read already that the hotel have sold the car park to a company to run it, but why are staff using these spaces and preventing the guests parking? This is correct because we witnessed a member of staff at his car.On Check in - given room on 4th floor and instructed that the lift went to 3rd floor and then it was necessary to walk up the stairs. Eventually we discovered that the lift really did go to 4th floor, so we used it from then onwards.Room 404 - right at the end of the corridor. This floor must originally have been staff accommodation as the room as were very small and the ceilings were slanted. I fully accept that these days hotels need to maximise space for guest bedrooms, however this room had paper peeling of the walls (it isn't exactly time consuming to have some ready-mixed paste available to paste down corners of peeling paper), there were signs of water coming in from the ceiling above the bed, a "caution" sticker in the bathroom was ripped, and there was a dangling cobweb in the room. Soap was not provided for the hand basin, but was for the bath/shower. There were no other toiletries provided at all like other hotels do. The bed-side lamp didn't work.Breakfast - dire to put it mildly. Cooked buffets are shocking at the best of times. Prince of Wales would do well to learn from Premier Inn. Toast was ready toasted and piled up on a bowl - thus cold and like cardboard. Croissants were like stodgy cake. Bacon, sausages etc were OK but could have done with being hot. This, in effect, was a cold cooked breakfast. Tea and coffee provided on the table in flasks -- what's that all about??After breakfast - returned to room to collect cases for check-out. Key-card would not open the door as 10.00am had passed. How can breakfast finish at 10am and check-out be at 10am? A total nonsense! In summary - clearly I was not a happy guest. Obviously I'm not going to recommend Prince of Wales to anyone. No - I've not stayed in hotels all over the world like so many Trip Advisor writers say they have - HOWEVER - I REALLY AM a Hotel Manager, so please don't patronise me with lame excuses as they simply will not wash!!!

Do this at the last minute fitted the bill. We knew hotel was tied and rather long on the tooth, The service was ok. The room clean, excellent pressure on the shower. Beer only £2.70 a pint.....you will get the picture. Breakfast was well executed. So overall it delivered what we expected. It would be fun to be a fly on the wall in its hay day.

Our extended family of 19 shared a pre-Fathers' Day Evening Meal here. What a wonderful surprise! Booking or gaining information about what was on offer was difficult, to say the least, but it was well-wort the effort. On arrival we could not have felt more welcome and special, greeted by a gentleman in charge of the restaurant, for whom nothing was too much trouble. We were allocated a whole palatial-style room for our group, beautifully and majestically set out, and with an attentive waitress. A refreshing site on that hot Saturday evening were several jugs of FREE iced water on our tables, with an invitation to partake of FREE tea and coffee and unlimited ICE CREAM for all. A varied menu of several choices from THREE different courses was served buffet-all-you-can-eat style, so even the hungriest hollow-legged of our group could fill their boots. The quality was amazing - whole fresh tender and succulent salmons, replenished at very regular intervals; tasty and delicious whole chicken breasts to mention but two of the many choices of mains, a variety of hot and cold vegetables, salads and accompaniments were topped off by at least 3 choices of mouthwatering desserts in addition to the free ice-creams. At £12.50 for adults and £6.25 for children, this meal could simply not be rivalled for quality and value, let alone beaten (as you'll see, we've visited quite a few over the years). A big thank you to the brilliant chef and courteous staff who made our evening so very special; we will return again very soon. Brilliant!

Not sure what is good to say about this place, the outside area is nice at best. Interior is about 40-50 years old. Looks like it has never been touched. Repairs to the ceilings were done with plaster board and not covered or made flat so there is numerous large areas sticking out.Decor is very old..Now the rooms. Dirty, uncomfortable, dated, very rough round the edges. The wall paper is falling off, the skirting boards and tops of the walls are all very dirty and full of mould. Bathroom had a funny smell. Had numerous spiders and cobwebs. Would never return, the price you charge people for these rooms is disgusting. You really need to have a rethink about it.

You get what you pay for and this once lovely hotel needs updating but is perfectly sufficient for a short stay. Unfortunately the receptionist that was there on our arrival was SO miserable and lacking in manners that is was a huge frustration for us. We both work in customer service and know how important a nice friendly welcome makes. Room was clean and comfortable. Housekeeping was excellent and room was serviced and new towels left daily. Night porter service was excellent and we were brought a fan when requested due to high heat. I think paying extra for parking and wifi is a cheek when you are already paying ot stay in the hotel, this should be reviewed. All in all we would stay again but would hope for a better receptionist and a few slight improvements to enhance our stay.

This was our 1st Pupkin event at Dobbies and it was very good. Our little dog Tilly loved it. The Pupkin Patch area is inside Dobbies thankfully given the terrible weather. Full of doggy goodies she was on her own little treasure hunt. Emily who greeted us and took us around the area made a fuss of Tilly who loved the attention. At the end Tilly received a toy which was of good quality and we had digital photos taken which we down loaded at home. Many thanks to Emily and the photographer who are clearly dog lovers who were super friendly and patient. More events like this please Dobbies.
