Very disappointing micro chips and monk fish scampi. Salty curry sauce. Overall, expensive. I know the business is for sale but extracting the maximum amount of cash for very little in return is the job of the Labour government. Krispies in Exmouth are an award winning F&C shop - there is a reason for this.....

The cod was seriously overcooked. The curry sauce was far too runny. The chips were very good. The price is ridiculously overpriced. Had we not driven off to eat elsewhere we would have gone back and returned the fish. Roll on September when the new Rockfish on the seafront get their gas installed and will start doing proper fish and chips.

Regularly get fish and chips from here, the fish is pretty good as are the battered sausages, however the chips are always bit of a let down. The online ordering seems to cause more harm than good, on busy evenings they regularly miss orders and more often than not customer service at this point is not high on the priority list. On my last visit I was told I hadn't made an order despite having paid and providing proof of purchase. When it was agreed that they had mislaid the order our food was finally ready 40 minutes after the designated time. You wouldn't mind so much if a couple of free drinks were offered or something was refunded but there is no acknowledgement, the approach is generally to presume the customer is in the wrong. It would be much better to scrap online ordering, it means walk-ins often can't get food and that's not well received particularly by visitors to the town who don't understand the system. As I say it's not bad and I would recommend a visit but this business is fortunate it has no real local competition on the doorstep.

the rudest service I’ve ever encountered. Two other customers left the shop whilst I was in there due to rude service and being told we all should have use the online service. Whilst leaving the shop I encountered someone coming back to the shop as their order was incorrect and they also said they’d had a half an hour delay on their food at pick up! Not worth the hassle. Either ditch the online service so you’re not stressed and being rude to walk in customers or hire extra staff to be able to serve everyone.

Very very rude - Tried ordering by phone - no success straight to message, attempted to order on line 3 times times - no success. Drove to order . Just ignored and waited , so I asked how to order , to be told abruptly “ we’re busy, you’re better off ordering on line or you will have to wait over 45 minutes. I tried to explain I had tried order online 3 times and it had failed- apparently it was my problem and I’d have to wait over 45 minutes or order online! So I left to “walk out then if you can’t be arsed”

I haven't been here for a while, but the smell as I was walking down Chapel Street was too much to resist so I popped in for a naughty lunchtime take out. There's nothing not to like really. Great food fried to order at a decent price and friendly staff. My girl was a bit jealous though, so we'll both return and eat in the restaurant next time.

Delighted that the Budleigh Fish Cafe has reopened and we were able to enjoy a superb Fish and chip supper.. The fish was superb and cooked to perfection .

Popped in at lunchtime and had an excellent Gluten Free Cod & chips. My wife never eats fish but I got her to try it and she loved it! Very friendly service and it was so good we will definitely make a return visit.

Haven’t eaten here for a couple of years as we moved away from Devon. But on our visit back to budleigh, this fabulous fish and chip shop was our first port of call. Once again absolutely gorgeous fish and chips and so delicious Gluten free fish and chips, and let me tell you where we live now in Warwickshire there is no fish and chip shop that comes close to how yummy our meals at Budleigh fish and chip shop are.thank you to the lovely owners you offer smashing food and service. I’m sorry to write this as have had many fish and chips here before had it yesterday evening and the fish if you can call it that was absolutely disgusting I couldn’t even bite the batter it was so hard I think I had a small bit of fish in there and it was like rubber had to throw both portions away I shall not be eating there again disgusting

One of the best plates of haddock and chips I’ve ever had. Lovely waitress, but didn’t catch her name. We also had the swordfish, which was equally delicious.

£25+ for 2 standard cod and chips with 2 sachets of tomato sauce ! The staff had bad attitudes. The chips were old and cold and the pieces of cod were pre-frozen, chewy and tasteless. The batter seemed to have been fried in ancient brake fluid, which ran all over our hands ......and tasted very stale. We have never been charged such a ludicrous price for takeaway fish and chips . Probably the worst we have ever eaten, with most of it ending up in the bin.

Spotless….really interesting menu - we just had cod and chips….but there was fresh caught hake on the menu which was very tempting! Good range of puds too. my elderly aunt and I were made very welcome, her wheelchair dealt with and when she asked to have a small portion our waiter suggested a child’s portion may be better….it was and she ate it all (she hates having to leave food, as she has a very small appetite these days). The fish was excellent, lovely crisp batter and tasty chips - not at all greasy . Will definitely be back!!!

We have always had excellent quality fish and chips from this takeaway in the past but tonight’s offering was very poor. The fish was totally dried up (I imagine reheated from lunchtime) and really tough and the chips were just ok but certainly not the standard we are used to. At £22.10 it is not a cheap meal these days but I don’t mind paying that for a good quality meal but not happy with what was produced this evening. Very disappointed and don’t feel inclined to revisit.

Read the reviews so we thought we would try it on our first night on holiday in the area. What can i say ? In a nutshell ....crap ! £9 for a tiny bit of fish ( when i could find it ) and a load of overcooked batter, horrible. £2.20 for tubs peas/curry sauce , peas thick as concrete and curry sauce was so thin and had no taste.

Just popped in for fish and chips takeaway yesterday evening; really good quality fish and fantastic batter. The two lads serving were lovely, really friendly and efficient. It’s fantastic how they do gluten free fish and chips here; a rarity among fish and chip shops but great for my coeliac son!

I don't like leaving bad reviews, but I rely on Trip Advisor to pick places to eat so it's only right that I'm honest. Very stressful ordering and waiting for fish & chips one lunchtime. The place was either overrun or under-staffed or both, and the staff weren't coping well. While we were waiting, they shut early to prevent more customers - and it didn't even seem busy. The fish and chips were luke warm, limp and lifeless. The curry sauce was a joke - watery and greasy - didn't even bother to eat it.

Very disappointing. Was looking forward to trying fish and chips here. Ordered 2 fish and chips. Everything was overcooked! Parts of the fish were black! Chips was so hard you could snap in half. Was asif it was all scrapped from the bottom of the fryer! Would had taken it back in and complained had we not driven home to eat them. Very Very disappointed

Having read some of the negative reviews I was somewhat cautious. I had absolutely no need to be! My wife and I fancied fish and chips to take home for supper and opted for local haddock. We were able to select the individual pieces of fish we wanted before they were cooked fresh to order. The quality of both the cooked fish and the chips was excellent, it was obvious that the Budleigh Fish and Chip shop uses good quality oil and the fryer knows what they are doing. To put this in perspective, our home town has two fish and chip shops and both of them have recently received prestigious awards from the National Federation of Fish Friers (NFF). Although we don’t eat fish and chips often we do know what “good” tastes like, and Budleigh was good. Very good! Turning to price and contrasting the comments that have been made on this topic. I am not in the food/drink/hospitality trade but I dread to think what is going on with their costs and profit margins during these challenging times. Switching the lights on, heating the premises, paying staff and local taxes then buying raw ingredients must be tough enough without the prospect of getting several litres of cooking oil up to temperature. Sometimes reality comes at a price and for those of us who fancy good fish and chips which Budleigh clearly serves, it is definitely a price worth paying!!!

In this awful time when it's bad for everybody, the hard-pressed staff heredid a wonderful job serving take-away through the window. Fresh cooked and hot, we carried our dinner down to the beach to enjoydinner (still hot!) with the sunset. It was so good we might think twice before going back inside to the restaurante!

We had cod, chips, curry sauce and mushy peas for three people for Mum’s birthday meal in lockdown. Everything was fresh, hot and delicious and it made her day.

I made a mistake of not checking Trip Advisor and ended up at this place which is rated 3.5 and one of the lowest rated in Budleigh Salterton. If I was the owner I would take note of the feedback and put an improvement plan in place. I ordered two large Cod and Chips the fish was small and the chips were awful, total waste of money, very DISAPPOINTED. There is lots of competition for Fish & Chips in this area so my advice is check Trip Advisor to avoid being disappointed.

After a bracing walk on the beach what better than to sit down in a proper fish and chip cafe. This one offers more in an interesting menu. We enjoyed cod and chips and halloumi and chips, served in friendly, clean surroundings with a traditional feel. Everything just perfect and of good quality, making it good value for money. Recommended.

On two nights we went to this Fish cafe on both occasions we had very good fish and they accommodated us by splitting a standard chips between us.We then walked the short distance to Budleigh beach and ate our food looking out to sea.Very good food and the best setting of all to eat it.Strongly recommend you take your Fish supper down onto the beach where there are numerous picnic tables.

Taking advantage of the glorious weather last Sunday on our first visit to Budleigh Salterton in years, we decided to end the day with a fish supper on the beach. We didn't pre-order but the girl serving at the time was super helpful and friendly, took our order promptly, gave advice re the children's meal portions and was clear regarding the time it would be ready. Rather than wait we went off for a walk and returned just in time to collect so the whole process was seamless.The food itself was fantastic, probably the best chip shop chips we've had for a long time, with very little being left untouched.Perfect.

Just the best , totally recommend this little chippy that keeps on giving . Good tasty fish and plenty of chips A little Devon treasure Would recommend you check online if open and can order online which is also helpful . Looking forward to our next visit when we return to Budleigh .

With a group of friends, we pre-ordered our takeaway fish and chips to eat on the beach at tea time. I can honestly say it was Probably the worse fish I have ever had. The thick batter was horrible and the fish was dry, overcooked and shrivelled. It tasted like it had been cooked at lunch time and re-cooked. One item of the order was missing. Some of the chips were just ok. The only good thing was I threw over half of it away so saved on calories !Seriously, if you want quality fish and chips, go to Krispies and don’t waste £10 on fish, chips and an item I didn’t even get.

The fish is excellent - lovely pieces of cod and crispy, tasty batter. Chips not so; bit thin and black bits in the oil. Quite expensive, even for where it is: £5.70 for a small piece of fish, £7 for "large" (actually average). Curry sauce very good too.Veggie burger good. Online ordering and payment and COVID service good and customer service very friendly.

The fish and chips are excellent, and it’s wonderful they offer gluten free daily, but the portions are small for the price! The size of the fish and amount of chips seem to have been diminishing over the years which is disappointing.

Such a treat! The staff were very helpful, understanding and reassuringly knowledgeable about gluten, including cross contamination. Food was served cheerfully with a smile and with further kind reassurance about food being gluten free. Our slot was 7.05pm and was ready dead on time. We come to Budleigh regularly and have a Fish & Chip supper but only come here once a year as it is always disappointing.Ignore the website as the prices are not what are charged e.g. standard fish, chips & mushy peas is not charged at £9.50 but £10.Portion sizes are also misleading but I suppose make sense i.e. 3 options can be called anything (standard, large, monster) or small, medium and large etc.The portions here are more like mini, medium and large e.g the standard portion of fish was very small (a bit like 2 fish fingers).The chips were also disappointing with many being discoloured/brown and so not very appetising.We have done our duty though and supported a local business but will go elsewhere (Sidmouth, Exmouth or Teignmouth) for much, much better Fish & Chips.

We had to wait outside to be called in. After half an hour no one called us in so went in for them to take our order. We chose what we wanted off the menu behind the counter to be told half of the stuff we wanted they didn’t have. We ordered to be told it would be ready 40 minutes later. I arrived tonight to order a takeaway. There were lots of grumbling customers who had already ordered waiting outside. I went to door only to be yelled at by the older lady behind the counter in a rude and aggressive manner that she was dealing with a major issue and wouldn’t take my order!I had literally not even stepped in the doorway or ordered anything. Shocking customer service, I won’t be back.

Quite why people are allocated a 10 minute time slot, is beyond any reason, as the times mean absolutely nothing! I don’t doubt that the food will be ok, but the service is absolutely mediocre... They bark out of the window, not to approach & ‘wait to be called!’ except. when they haven’t printed your ticket, you are clearly NEVER going to be served!Definitely one to avoid as the closest they get to management is GROSS mismanagement! At the time of posting this review, our food is 40 minutes late!???Ordinary I wouldn’t mind, but we ordered our food an hour in advance... total shambles & we won’t be back! They do not deserve our custom! I appreciate that we are in difficult times, but this is wholly disgraceful & unacceptable...

Fish and chips ordered by phone 24hrs in advance, delivered by bmx, hot and tasty. Just what we needed during lockdown. We ordered in plenty of time as the phone line is constantly engaged.

Ordered fish and chips for four people. Two of the fish portions were fine but the other two were small and the batter on these two was 'chewy' and unpleasant.

We had high expectations of this place and we can easily say it was the worst fish and chips we've ever had. The chips were awful, the portions were small, it was overpriced, and my husband's fish was mostly batter. Even the sauces were horrible. The only redeeming factor was the lovely service.

They cook stuff while you wait, so you might have to hang around for 10 to 15 minutes. But it's worth it.The batter is nice and crispy.The chips are just right - not greasy, floppy or flabby. Just soft enough and very tasty.The only drawback is that I live over 150 miles away, so I've only been here twice (on my week's holiday). And they don't deliver that far.Still, I shall remember my cod and chips fondly and I reckon it's probably the best I've had in my 65 years.

The Fish and Chips served here is one of the reasons we travel 100miles to Budleigh for a day out. Having previously eaten in the restaurant side which had excellent fish and chips this time we decided to have a takeaway. We both ordered the Mini Cod and Chips. I know there is a review on here that isn’t happy with the portion size of this, all I can say is it filled us up nicely without feeling fat an gluttonous. The service really friendly and as before the food freshly cooked light crisp batter with crispy chips on the outside and soft in the middle- just as they should be. Eaten whilst watching the sea rolling in crashing against the beach. Perfect. Thank you Fish Cafe and we will be back soon.

We visited this grest little establishment whilst on holiday, Rachael who served us was approachable and friendly. Happy to advise on what was available. yes we had to wait for it to be cooked which was not a problem, food was hot and tasted fresh and crisp. nothing was too much trouble. Definitely can recommend for a good meal of fish and chips

It is amazing how your sense of smell excels that of dogs when it comes to fish & chips. I was on (another) impromptu visit and was drawn to the aromas before setting sight on any part of the menu. In fact, as I approached the premises, I assumed that it was simply a 'take-away' and was therefore surprised when I found that it had a small 'seating' for around two+ dozen people. The first thing that struck me was the menu. Anyone out there that has been to Cyprus, may have stumbled on a place in Nicosia, (I think they also have a place in Limassol), called the "Blue Ocean". Well, the Budleigh Fish & Chip Café's menu was very similar, and so I was immediately drawn to their fried haloumi cheese 'fingers', (or strips). I went into GBR mode and started to order a variety of items including a 'side' take away order of a Large Haddock!....I was in fish-lovers heaven. Recommend?.....yes, another thumbs up from me.......(this is my equivalent of a firm handshake from Paul Hollywood in the British Bake-Off). If you're in Budleigh, give this place a go

Came in on Saturday the 31st and was bitterly disappointed. I ordered 2 mini cod and 2 mini chips which came to just under £10 and it was the most rediculas sized portion of fish I've ever seen. I gave Mt children a bigger portion at 2 years old than I was given here. The staff were very frie dly and it was really busy but after the size of food I was given I sadly won't be returning. I wish I had taken a picture so I coukd put it on here as it was that rediculas.

All I can say is excellent, the best fish and chips I have had for a long while definitely need to visit. Brilliant and staff are lovely too.

I ordered fish and chips for my family and took them to the beach to eat . After opening them and starting to eat I found to my horror 5 black hairs in my food . Absolutely disgusting and to be honest the place is an absolute rip off . It’s worth driving to krispies in exmouth if you would like decent fish and chips .

A lovely place with super friendly staff and simple but delicious food. From what we tried fish and chips, halloumi, prawn cocktail and crab salad were great. Went there twice in 3 days, sooooo good!

You can't beat good fish and chips, and these are good fish and chips! Ate in the small cafe, friendly service and food cooked to order. Crispy batter, fresh fish, plenty of chips and mushy peas - just yum!

This classic fish and chips cafe was buzzing, queues at the take-away counter, and a full sit-down parlour. Our party had superb cod and chips, wonderfully fresh fish cooked perfectly, a generous and juicy crab salad and the crab cakes with shared chips. Crab cakes were tasty though not as expected, very thin and brown crabmeat-based, but nice, no Tabasco or similar was available which was a pity. We’ll happily eat there again, really nice staff.

We love coming to the Budleigh fish shop, the food is a consistently high standard and the staff are simply lovely, especially Katie! There is always a little wait but this is only testament to the food being cooked fresh and the line out the door and down the street! Love love love!

Ideal. Friendly, quick service in cosy, welcoming, spotlessly clean little Fish and Chip cafe. Nice menu, beautifully cooked and presented. We recommend after our first visit and will be back!

This fish and chip shop with a small restaurant at the side so is extremely good fish and chips. We also have the scampi which are also good. They now take credit cards which is an advantage that they never had before. Not everyone carries cash.

The food is good. It's cooked fresh and the staff are friendly. What I don't understand is on a Friday night it's it's always busy, people queuing out the door. But yet they never have any fish cooked.. dispite the fact 80% of the customers are eating fish?

Today we visited budleigh salterton and the fish cafe. The staff were really friendly and the food was great. It is all served in cardboard trays so no plastic!

Once again on visiting Budleigh Salterton we had to visit our favourite fish and chips shop in the area. We were not disappointed, once again the service was impeccable, the service prompt and friendly. The food was freshly cooked to order, was excellently presented and was beautiful to eat. Once again we thoroughly enjoyed our meal and are determined to return.

Fish is fried to order, there's usually a queue for takeaway but often a seat in the cafe. The service is always pleasant and the fish and chips are perfect. There's usually a few alternatives to the traditional fish tea on the menu for the more adventurous and the cafe has a licence too, so you can have a glass of wine with your food. It's clean and comfortable. I'd always recommend this chip shop/ cafe.

Absolutely top-notch. Crisp batter, flakey fresh fish, proper chippy chips, plenty of trimmings and other favourites all served by lovely friendly staff. The GF options are also done extremely carefully and well.

2 large cod and chips . There wasn’t much change from £20. Chips were very dry and not tasty. Fish was good I have no complaints there. My wife normally likes curry sauce but not at £1.20 Quite a pricey shop. Even for Budleigh.

Recently moved into the area, and whilst property under development I have no cooking facilities, I regularly get a takeaway Fish and Chips from this restaurant, and as this is one of my favourite meals I consider myself somewhat of an expert. The fish and chips are cooked from fresh at the time of ordering and is amongst the best I have eaten.

Nice service, super efficient. Take-away is great value but the restaurant feels a tad pricey for the portion sizing. Worth a visit though. Good location

We were having a day out from our home in Somerset so Googled gluten free fish and chips in Devon as my husband has coeliac disease. They have separate fryers for g/f food and know what they are doing. We didn’t wait long for our meal and it was delicious, the batter was crisp and light on both g/f fish and normal and the chips were lovely, none of your soggy ones sometimes served elsewhere. I don’t mind paying a little more for good food and service. The ladies in there were very helpful and friendly and even allowed us to take our dog in. I can’t understand some of the negative comments as we thoroughly enjoyed our meal and will definitely go back as 3 other members of our family have coeliac disease

After moving to Budleigh this is the only choice of fish and chips in the area. The menu is horribly over priced and the shop itself is tiny and always feels uncomfortable while you wait for what seems a lifetime for your dinner to come.

Pretty good fish and chip shop. The shop is poorly laid out so that there is no logical space for a queue and sometimes you have to wait outside. Staff are cheerful and the fish and chips are good. Prices are a bit high.

We called in after the tea time rush on a friday night and ordered large cod , chips and pea fritter. This was cooked to order as the cabinet was empty , which clearly makes sense because an over stocked hot display would be either a waste or a soggy serving .

Whenever you're in East Devon, it's worth going out of your way to visit Budleigh Fish Cafe for their superb fish and chips. Last two visits, we sat in the cafe with a glass of their Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc. Unbeatable. (BTW - I am not connected to this cafe in any way; they deserve the best review I can give them).

Fish & chips with mushy peas £11.30 was too much for the quality of the fish fillet you’d expect a loin but this was a thin measly cut. If you’re prepared to pay a little extra which I did for a large fish I would want a premium cut!

Very nice fish and chips with mushy peas and tartare sauce. We ate in the restaurant which seats quiet a few people so not sure what the difference is in terms of cost for eating in. Thought the fish was a little on the small size compared to what we are used to at our local chip shop, but it was tasty and well cooked. Would recomend but. Little pricey for portion sizes.

We were walking the South Coast Way from Exmouth to Sidmouth so Budleigh Salterton makes the ideal stop off point for food and arriving around 2pm we just made it to this eatery before they finished up their lunchtime service.

My family were staying in Budleigh Salterton this week on holiday and we had fish and chips from here twice, they were that good. Freshly cooked, yes you have to wait a bit but I'd rather have fresh, tasty fish and good chips.

Have visited this Fish and Chip twice now and on both occasions the food has been excellent. Quality Fish and chips and the Curry sauce is amazing. A very friendly chap serving made the visit even more enjoyable. Take your food and eat them on the pebbled beach watching the waves roll in. Perfect..

My wife and I visited this seaside town on our recent summer vacation to see relatives in this part of the UK. Upon arrival, my wife and I took note of the long queue and thought this to be a good sign, how wrong we were!

We always visit this chippy at least once when in the area. My husband and myself are quite partial to fish and chips whenever we are close to the coast we enjoy noth8ng more than haddock and chips out of the bag. We have never been disappointed with either the taste, quality or portions from premier chippy.

Passed the shop but it was closed. Popped back just before opening and queued with about five others. We asked for a large portion each @ £3.20 each!! Now they've just opened and I was expecting freshly made crispy chips made with fresh oil. The staff were friendly and service was quick. When I opened my bag on the beach, I looked into a bag of dark, shrivelled chips which were pretty soft, not crispy at all. Certainly not £3.20s worth. Very disappointed.

The best fish n chips we’ve had for a long time.

At about 7pm on a Friday evening the queue for takeaways was coming out of the shop although we decided to join this and ended up waiting almost half an hour. The queuing area was cramped, noisy and hot. However our fish and chips were just about worth the wait. The hake and haddock were both good and came with generous portions of chips.

We thought the long long queue was an indicator of a good fish and chip shop but now realise it was just due to slow service. Small portions and not particularly nice. Staff slow and a bit grubby. People waiting for service in the sit in part gave up. Wouldn’t go there again.

We visited the chip shop on a very warm evening, it was a squeeze to get in, however everyone was nice to each other. My friend and I ordered from the ordering point. There are plenty of notes which say they cook fresh, so we knew it wouldn't be fast. The problem happened when we reached the end of the queue, there were people who had done a telephone order who were squeezing in at the end and the chap who was serving didn't really know what was going on. They don't record your order so I had to repeat it several times before he repeated back my order, which wasn't particularly complicated - 2 portions of chips and a mini fish!

Drinks slapped down on the table so hard they slopped. My glass had tomato sauce smeared on it, replacement glass had grease on it. I sent it back only to be told it was condensation. Grumpily given a third glass. Dinner slapped down on the table. It happened to others too so it wasn't just me. Monster cod just about the same size as a normal portion, ordinary cod way too smal,l all slightly overcooked and the chips were dry. You can ask for more chips but we decided not to. Tartare sauce, included in the meal, used to be homemade, but I think now comes out of a catering tub and is not the same. Altogether quite expensive given the portions and the poor service. Shame really that the standard has slipped so far. Queues are long on a Friday, but probably better to buy the take away and eat it on the beautiful beach.

Good honest fish and chips in a clean and friendly environment, can really fault it.

Really sorry to say that this was not a good experience. There were 6 other people in the cafe/restaurant and the food took over 45 minutes to arrive. It was luke warm and the chips were not good, fish overcooked. The place was cold and the washroom uninviting. All in all very disappointing.

Enjoyed the over priced fish and chips (large haddock was tiny). Can you believe that my wife was charged £1 extra to have no batter???????!!! This needs to be looked at because you are very expensive for fish and chips. As said good quality but nearly £20 for two is way too much!

Very expensive and it took 30 minutes to arrive. The whole process was chaotic and slow with fish occasionally appearing from the pan at a mind-numbing rate. The queuing area in front of the counter is an incredibly claustrophobic experience and while we enjoyed eating on the beech afterwards, the whole experience was pretty awful. We have been coming here on an annual basis for 20 years and I'm not sure it's worth it any more

We live locally and have used them occasionally for last minute takeaways. Never again - chips were dreadful; sogggy and I suspect cooked in old fat. Fish was tasteless. Staff scruffy ( coughing into her sleeve too as she was serving,,!)

Visited for a takeaway a week ago, rather expensive and although the chips were ok the fish was one of the worst I have ever had
