Portofinos Restaurant in Newcastle upon Tyne

Great Francesca pasta - with both normal tagliatelle for me and gluten free penne for partner plus very attentive service.

When we go to Newcastle we love to go to Portofinos. It’s been very good every time. The chips are just right, the setting is lovely.

Lovely experience at Portofinos, service from staff was exceptional very welcoming and attentive. Food was delicious and so reasonable for a happy hour lunch and will definitely be visiting again soon x

Our first time here. Good location near Monument. Full when we arrived Saturday early evening - a good sign. Beautiful room. A bit noisy but we soon got used to it and it quietened when a few people left. Food came quickly. Calzone was tasty and hot. Maybe even better with more seasoning but extra is provided on tables. Crispy. Great. Greek salad fresh and tasty but could be bigger for the money and needed more feta. Olives tomatoes leaf. Nice. Chicken pasta was really good. Big portion. Garlic bread perfect. Garlicky crispy and perfectly baked. Chilled water. Tiramisu up there with good ones we’ve had in italy. Plenty of helpful staff. Clean toilets. Reasonable prices. Will be going back. Recommended.

Well, a lovely building, lovely staff and a fillet steak that puts Miller and Carter and Babuccios in the shade :) I dine here every fortnight and it’s a gem. Quietly gets on with its business :) fabulous

We went at end of happy hour and it was very busy - just as well we had booked ! We were seated and order taken promptly - however waitress was rude / patronising. Pizzas were delivered without delay but were disappointingly average; side salad...

The ambiance wasn’t relaxing and the food was well below the standard of other Italian restaurants in town. I had arrancini starter - not at all authentic. The pasta sauce in my main course was tasteless. Toilets not exactly accessible with so many stairs Sorry...

We turned up as a group of 13 (Portofinos were expecting 12) and could not have been made more welcome. Our food was served prompt and all together which was most impressive and the staff who looked after us could not have been more helpful....

Lovely atmosphere and fabulous food. The restaurant is in an old bank with amazing tiles. Excellent value too particularly at happy hour.

Lovely surroundings, pleasant friendly staff, place had a nice buzz about it on a Sunday afternoon, we had pizza, pasta and a side salad all absolutely delicious 😋 would 100% recommend and we will definitely be back on our next trip to Newcastle.

We came on a busy lunchtime and hadn't booked so were lucky to get a table. Spectacular surroundings and really lovely staff. They were happy to adjust the dish I wanted slightly to make it perfect for me (I added tuna to the arrabiatta). My partner had the carbonara and we both said it's the best Italian meal we've had in a long time! Very reasonable price for the meal as well. Reccomend!

My friend and me went to Portofinos (for the first time) on a tuesday evening. The building is just amazing it looks like an old bank. Our dinner was superb we both had pasta and we finished with a white chocolate cheesecake. The service was friendly and attentive even if when we entered one of the waitresses did not seem very welcoming. Apart from that we had a very nice evening.

What a beautiful restaurant! Glorious surroundings and delicious food. Very helpful and friendly waiting staff and a wide range of Italian dishes. It was so good that I returned on three consecutive evenings.

I visited this restaurant over the weekend with the family. The restaurant has a good atmosphere and a good decor, but I was rather disappointed with the food. For such a well refined Italian decor, I would have expected a bit more in regards to the quality of the food. Myself and the girlfriend ordered pizzas. Expecting stone baked pizza cooked in a gas or wood fired oven, this was not to be. Pizzas were very soggy as if they had been microwaved, or preheated from frozen. The two other members had paella and the seabass. Presentation not so good and little portions. If I can compare the price I paid here to another restaurant in town, I was certainly let down. After leaving the restaurant I felt disappointed as this was my visitors last day, and wished I'd gone with my other suggestions. This is a beautiful place, with beautiful tiled walls and ceilings. A true Italian look. I would fully recommend food is improved and certainly invest in a woodfired oven. I'm sure this would do the restaurant wonders with their clientele.

I have been here many times before and the food is very nice however this time did not live up to usual standards. The beef was cold and pale/pink (considering we ordered the meet to be well done), small portions of vegetables more or less what you would give to a child and least of all the Yorkshire pud that tasted like garlic. Unbelievable, no effort made by staff and the overall experience must have lasted no longer than 20 minutes. Do this place get a second chance?

Visited on a lunch time with a friend, had the lunch menu special which was about £6.95 for a starter and main. Good value for food, generous portions and tasty. Cost us £20 for the meals and two alcoholic drinks. Quick and friendly service and the food came out minutes after ordering. Definitely recommend will be visiting again.

We visited the restaurant before going to see a play. We were there quite early, around half five, and I believe we got the last free table. Staff were welcoming and friendly. The service was swift without being rushed. Food was as described and tasty. We has a sharing antipasti, please note it does not come with bread. We then had salmon pasta, which was rich and creamy, and a decent portion, and a tuna steak with prawns. Be aware that there is a lot of the butter sauce, which some would like, but if you ordered it with say a mash potato side it might end up very greasy. We had it with vegetables and it was delicious. All in all, I would be happy to visit again.

My partner and I were given the opportunity to go out for a meal paid for by my company. We opted for here as we had always been meaning to try it, however never got around to it, so we decided to book and eat here. The building itself is a wonderful building the architecture is beautiful, we did expect it to be a little bigger inside than what it was, as it did mean that the tables were very close together, however, not a major problem. We ordered drinks, and ordered our starters. Bread crumbed garlic mushrooms in garlic butter and crepes. Both starters were very nice, we didn't have to wait long at all. We then ordered more drinks which didn't arrive and we had to chase up our drinks order. The main courses took 35 minutes to arrive at the table. We had ordered Steak and gamberoni. The steak came with some sort of watery sauce on it, which looked like diet coke!! It was meant to be port and stilton which they have the nerve to charge £1.50 extra for that!! The steak was accompanied by a tiny bowl of a side order of vegetables, and soooo tough it couldn't even be cut with a steak knife. The gamberoni was supposed to be served with rice both starter or main course, a tiny portion arrived with some shriveled up soggy brown lettuce. To give credit where it's due, the waitress was lovely, she did everything she could to accommodate us, pity the manager didn't do the same. A condescending man with a bad attitude when he was confronted with the complaint. As both mains were utter rubbish we felt both should have been deducted from the bill. We were happy to pay for what we had already eaten it was the mains which were the problem. I would save yourself a journey and eat somewhere else. As for the manager, I suggest he needs to attend a customer service course and find some new chefs at this restaurant, preferably ones who can cook. We shant be returning.

Good quality, tasty food which is very reasonably priced. Its an old building and its nice that the building and decoration has remained untouched, its quite beautiful and grand inside, the tables and chairs don't match the style of the place and could really do with being replaced for something that matched the surroundings. The staff are attentive, although it was quiet when I was there. It also felt cold, but its an old building with very high ceilings and the majority of the decoration is tiles so you can kind of understand why it was cold on a very cold night outside. I have been here a few times and will continue to go back. I can recommend the Turkish delight cheese cake, its delicious.

we got a groupon voucher 2 courses each for 15. - great value the food was quite nice my boyfriend claimed the starter was substandard; however it was a chicken pancake which was strange choice. if i didn't have a discount i probably would not pay full price and be totally satisfied but it was nice and very good value. looking at photos i thought the venue looked hideous but in person it was actually nice. :0) xx the staff were very nice and sweet

I read some other reviews before posting this and was amused by the managements rude comments back, as really they sum up the exact experience we had. They don't seem to accept any responsibility whatsoever and mock people's comments to detract from the real issue. The food was bland, the staff rude and despite the place being empty the bill was plonked on the table before we were even asked if we wanted another drink. We felt uncomfortable throughout. It's such a pretty building too.

My partner and I dined here in November 2014, and whilst our meal was great, it was spoiled by an abusive member of staff. I am new to TripAdvisor, so have only got around to writing the review now.We had booked a table in advance, however as the restaurant was very busy, we had to wait a further half an hour to sit. This was fine, as we weren't in any hurry and it was a Saturday night, so understandably, it can get very busy.My partner had the Francesca pasta dish, which she said was amazing, and I had the bianco verde risotto, which was probably on of the best I have ever had. The food was cooked to a high standard, was well-presented and the table staff were really friendly. After finishing our meal, I went to the toilet, and when I returned, found my partner with her coat on ready to go, looking flustered whilst searching for money to pay. As we had only just finished and plates had not yet been cleared, I asked her if we could sit back down, as I thought we were getting teas and dessert to finish, however she said she was feeling ill, so we left.She later told me after asking if anything was wrong that an older man, who was setting tables, had been swearing and complaining loudly behind her so that she could hear, about how she was taking up space. He had sat a group of customers next to hear, and told her that they could have the table when my girlfriend had left. I would have gone back and complained, as we had literally just finished our mains, and were intending on getting drinks and a dessert, however my girlfriend was really upset, and insisted otherwise. I've never heard of anything like this happening in a restaurant before, and despite the food being really nice and atmosphere vibrant, I would not recommend Portofino to anyone.

Very average meal with strange ambience! Food was very average and my salad was very poor and drenched in dressing! Been to much better in the town!

Beaucoup de choix dans les menus et très bon, nous étions une dizaine, chacun a pris des choses différentes et nous étions tous satisfait de notre plat. Visited here today 11/10/14 with my partner and my two children what a terrible disgrace from start to finish ..... Walked in and the smell ov bleach was so off putting who ever is your cleaner or cleaners need to lay off the bleach ..... I had the garlic prawns so did my partner they were so over cooked like (rubber) then we both had stake tasted off to be honest ..... Will defo not be returning!!!!!! Think u need to get a new chef and some fresh ingredients!!! Terrible!!!

The building is beautiful! The interior stunning and worth a visit just for that, then add in the great value food and drink, the lovely atmosphere and the fantastic helpful staff and you've got the makings of a great night out. The only small caution it that the toilets are down a very steep spiral staircase so be warned!!
