Porterhouse Butcher and Grill in Newcastle upon Tyne

Another great visit. We had booked and it was busy - 4pm Saturday. Lovely helpful waiter. We had prawn cocktail & oysters to start. Both great. Loads of prawns in cocktail. Really fresh oysters. Shared big cut porterhouse for mains. Chips and salad included. Shared a delicious marrow bone gravy too. Steak was perfect. We ordered medium rare or as chef advised and it was slightly more towards medium. The rump side had perfectly rendered fat. Sirloin melted in the mouth. It’s an expensive meal but top quality food,service & wines.

My wife and I had a date day booked here. A little treat. The service is great, one of the staff showing us immediately to our table, which was neatly laid out. We had a six oyster starter which is Lindisfarne oysters served with Tabasco and / or vinaigrette. We liked these and they came from the adjacent Salt Water restaurant which you can order from if you prefer a seafood type meal. We were there to try the steaks though and that is what we ordered. I chose the serloin and my wife tried a Wagyu steak as she had heard a lot about the quality and taste of Wagyu but never experienced it. Both came quickly and both meals were delicious, though from the slightly alarming noises eminating from the chair opposite, my wife was finding the Wagyu steak more of an epiphany than a simple steak meal. We did not try any desserts but the cocktails were OK and there was a good choice of wine on the menu. aprices are on the expensive side but worth it if you are going for a foodie experience rather than a quick bite out. Our meal came to around£75 each. We will be going back.

The food was good and it’s fairly priced. My family had the wagyu burgers and while they said the Fig jam was “interesting” they would recommend it. I had the fillet steak and it was good but seemed to be seasoned with something that I couldn’t put my finger on but all in all was very nice. The only thing bringing the score down as the service was slow and something didn’t come out with the main meal as advertised. But other than that it’s very much worth a visit.

Finally arranged a family meal here having looked at it many times. It's another restaurant in the 21 group owned by Terry Laybourne. Very friendly staff on arrival and surroundings mirrored the friendly relaxed atmosphere. Water was immediately brought to our table and drinks ordered whilst we studied the menu. Starters looked lovely but we knew we'd never eat that and a main. For the lovers of red meat it's a treat. Fabulous steaks and meat dishes with accompanying sides and sauces - one side is included in the price. You can also order from Saltwater if you prefer fish. Staff will try to accommodate any requests. Husband ordered a rib eye steak with fries and salad with bearnaise sauce. So tender and cooked to perfection - medium rare. Father in law ordered the lemon sole, fries and don't think it touched the sides. I ordered pan fried hake with cougettes and bagna cauda with summer vegetables. Can honestly say it was superb. Fish was melt in the mouth, good sized portion and accompanying side complimented it perfectly. The drinks list is comprehensive with some gorgeous wines. We couldn't manage a sweet as we were so full. Cannot recommend it highly enough. High quality ingredients cooked by obviously talented kitchen staff, friendly efficient front of house staff and very comfortable relaxed environment. Thanks for a wonderful afternoon and huge thanks to all. It won't be our last visit.

Quite gorgeous. It feels really classy, but there is a ghost town vibe once Fenwick shuts. I went for the restaurant week menu. The minute steak was meh. The oysters were really lovely and they do happy hour where it is £1.80 a shuck. Really really tasty red Thai curry too. The Earl Grey ice cream with the chocolate bomb was divine.

**Review of The Porter House** On our recent visit to The Porter House, we were warmly welcomed and guided to the back seating area. The ambiance was modern, clean, and incredibly comfortable—an ideal setting for a relaxed evening out. We chose The Porter House because of its diverse menu options from both The Saltwater Company and The Grill, which suited both my husband and me perfectly. We decided to mix and match from both menus, and the food did not disappoint. Having not visited for a while, it felt like a well-deserved treat rather than our usual "let's just pop in" visit. The wine and cocktail list was impressive, offering a good variety at reasonable prices considering the location and upscale atmosphere. The staff truly stood out, providing excellent service and even going the extra mile to pull up an additional table so we could comfortably spread out our food. This thoughtful gesture allowed us to enjoy our meal with plenty of space, making the experience even more enjoyable. We ended up spending several hours here, soaking in the busy yet chic vibe. While the bill was on the pricier side, it was justified by the quality of both the food and the service. The location, near Fenwick, is convenient, and the quality of the seafood and meat was outstanding—exactly what I would expect from a top-notch evening restaurant in the city. Overall, The Porter House delivered a delightful dining experience that lived up to its reputation.

Dined in for early dinner, when Saltwater rehoused me so I could sit at the bar. Seth was exceptional service and food from kitchen (fish) was amazing as always.

Restaurant week in Newcastle. We came back after a good meal in January. Today felt a bit stretched. Loads of chefs not many waiting staff. No bread offered as per last time. Water offered, forgot to come back and ask if we'd like anything from the wine menu. Starter of summer vegetables and feta was tasty. Lacked seasoning and some extra olive oil would have been nice. Focaccia was sourdough toast and burnt. Main was steak and we asked for medium rare, both well done. Pepper butter was harsh and big chunks of black pepper bit much. Fries ok no salt. Staff didn't ask till plates cleared if main was good. Onion rings side was good but as last time. Three desserts no cheese. Wanted creme caramel but apparently they hadn't set properly. Why didn't they find an alternative, Brulee? Shiraz Australian was delicious. Think Porterhouse weren't quite ready for Monday trade. Half full,school holidays. Has to ask for bill as staff chatting in the corner. Could be better £35 each.

After saying I'd never go back here I thought il give it another go I eat out most days and try and say positive things we went for express lunch starters a joke cods roe and oysters appalling steak tough chips over cooked the only positive thing I can say is young red head girl was absolutely lovly so on leaving I did give her 5 pounds 2 say the king is in his altogether sums it up will definitely not return

I have been going to porters for years and this was the worst meal I have had the steak was sirloin but felt like a cheap minute steak. We spent 430 pound. I would never go again after that experience. Staff used to be brilliant but there have changed and place has gone down especially the steak.

Booked for anniversary lunch and once again we were not disappointed the meal including wine was 175.00 quite steap but the quality was amazing we had a fab meal and the wine was delicious too if I could suggest and changes it would be please include bread with the prawn cocktail so my hubby doesn’t pinch mine and the toilets are too far way from the restaurant..lovely staff too

First visit not without several service faults. Very nice to meet Manager Francesca again who keeps the show on the road. Delayed being shown to table, wine glasses over filled, directed long way outside to toilets but not given the key code, the first floor toilets were also closed! How can you cater to so many without near toilets? Fish soup was better than the steak tartare. Beef Stroganoff and rice generous. Little steam pud ok. Good wine list and coffee. Many of the young staff require further polish.

Great lunch at Porterhouse on the Express Lunch menus. Excellent choice from the Porterhouse or Saltwater menus. I went off the Porterhouse. My partner went off the Saltwater menu. Great food and excellent service. And great value for money with 3 courses for £27. Carlingford Oysters were great. Minute Steak was perfect. Salmon linguine was full flavoured. And to top it off a Bitter Chocolate Nouse with Cherries. Washed down with a bottle of the house red.

We booked for a weekday lunch and we had such a lovely meal. Both the main meals and dessersts were beautiful. Small intimate restaurant with a relaxed atmosphere. Friendly, professional staff and attentive service. Loved it so much we have rebooked for a special occasion meal.

I have been dining here for many years both in Porterhouse and the adjourning restaurant Saltwater were you can also choose from their menu. The last 2 times i have visited i think food and service is going downhill rapidly , my last visit on 03/01/24 was not the best , there was only about 6 people in the restaurant and my starter of oysters with chorizo sausage arrived without the sausage, when i questioned the waiter he spoke to chef who said he forgot about the sausage! When the main courses arrived , my wife ordered a fillet steak to be cooked medium which was tiny in size, and it was rare ! It was sent back , and after 5 mins it arrived back to the table still rare in the middle - when you are paying fine dining prices i expect the food to be perfect , I ordered the Halibut fish which was nice but the skin was soggy! when you pay £42 for a very small piece of fish i expect the skin to be crispy. However the last few times i have been to both saltwater and porterhouse they are unfortunately on the decline , i feel the staff are inexperienced and the quality of the dishes are not the same , even though the produce stills looks amazing , so i won't be going back for a very long time.

These guys go the extra mile and every year source me a quality pheasant and you can buy all the extras here, tho bread sauce was an issue ...maybe have tubs of this next year please Bacon the very best Eggs free range real farm eggs wow so tasty And himalayan dried beef i'll try next time I'll be back as Arnie wud say lol Best store in the country I kid u not Happy new year to all the lovely staff xo

I was dining with a friend who is a regular visitor here. She normally opts for the hake but today we decided on the liver and bacon which was melt in the mouth gorgeous. We like a light red and our server recommended the montepulciano d'abruzzo which was a great pairing. The restaurant was busy and buzzing but the service was excellent. Thank you to the whole team. You were brilliant 👍

The food saved it. We weren’t acknowledged for the first 20 minutes of us being there. After bringing this to the attention of the “manager” as the other one wanted to avoid us and favourite every table around us.. they didn’t even knock anything off the bill without me asking! Honestly abhorrent! Will never return!

Steak shocking my husband asked for medium rare it came medium well my sons couldn't eat his it was all fat and grissel myself and youngest son steak was really tough we ordered chips but when arrived we were given skinny fries which were changed to chips by this point our steaks were on the table for 5 mins and ended up cold the peppercorn sauce was split and watery we did let a member of staff no this who just said i will tell the kitchen no offer of changing our steaks absolutely shocking £200 and walked out hungry

Great food and great location situated within the Fenwicks food court. Starters were amazing and the overall quality of food was fantastic. Steaks were served very rare unfortunately when asked for medium rare, thankfully very well rested so still really enjoyed and suspect it was more of a mix up rather than incorrect cooking. Really helpful and friendly staff, great food and great location will definitely return.

Fantastic restaurant,food was 10/10 no fault as usual. Service was great new girl ocean tried her best to make sure we were ok with everything and were happy which we were . I’m a minority here, because I just came to the butchers counter for sausages. I have to say, they were the best quality meat I’ve ever tasted. Really worth the extra pennies for them. I was served by a Scottish fellow, sorry I didn’t get his name but he was very friendly and attentive and bagged my food up ready to take home. Lovely guy and it’ll make me come back. 1) Food quality. Brilliant tasting meat. 2) Lovely staff member. First time here purchasing, and I can assure you I’ll be back again. Thank you.

The main course steaks were lovly and the oysters but the prawn starters and sea food platter (a main dish) were very disappointing the staff especially our waiter were lovly I did expect 2 pay around300 with drinks and it was close 2 the mark but sadly it wasn't worth it love the setting but Def not the best food

Visited for restaurant week with my friends. I have been to Porterhouse 3-4 times, and it is usually faultless. The food was excellent - from presentation to taste and texture. However, the service was a real letdown, and I wouldn’t usually expect this from the 21 Hospitality Group. The wine arrived late (or was forgotten?), the amended sides (Parmesan truffle chips) were inputted into the EPOS incorrectly, meaning the wrong portion was served to us (they let us keep the regular chips). No one came to ask us how our starter or main courses were, or how we were doing. Despite being a small restaurant and plenty of staff on duty, I found it hard to get someone’s attention to get the bill, and also tough to get their attention to get a card machine.

Arrived on time and greeted warmly as a regular. Seated 10 minutes before asked for a drink. Not keen on being called "Guys". Order taken after some delay, waitress a little blunt and disinterested. Long wait for bread and olives.. big wait for mains..hadn't even ordered starters! Mains eventually came 45 minutes after sitting down. My steak was blue (see pic) when I wanted medium rare.. Lamb chops with broad beans and peas came with...no broadbeans or peas. Shame we had to ask why they weren't there! A gesture was made to adjust the bill and this was accepted but you know.. I really wanted to pay for what we expected. This is supposed to be pretty high end and frankly it was rubbish. Gent at the next table sent his food back.. something not right here and it needs someone to have a hard look at how it works and the standards to be set for the high prices charged

We booked in here as a last minute table as the review looked promising and we were not disappointed! The staff were very friendly and we seated immediately - despite arriving 15 minutes early. They offered us a selection of water and we also got us our drinks straights straight away. We opted to get a couple of the crispy sushi with spicy tuna and ginger to start which were absolutely delicious- I could just eat these as a meal! I then opted for the Picanha cooked rare and it was perfect and my Fiancé went for the steak burger - which was also delicious! We didn’t have any desserts but we will certainly be making another trip up to Newcastle to go again! The staff were lovely and the restaurant was clean and the ambiance was nice! Highly recommend!

Great express lunch menu with a good selection to choose from. Only issue we had is the server tried to bill us £10 more than the menu price.

Superb evening provided by this restaurant. The quality of the produce, the cooking and of course not forgetting the staff, make this a place to dine. A very good balanced menu which also includes a great seafood selection. I chose the Porterhouse as this has more seating than its seafood sibling next door. The steak tartare was one of the best I have had, the creamy richness of the egg yolk, just brought it all together. My wife had King Prawns in a chilli and garlic butter, simply superb. All supported by a serving team that were there but unobtrusive. Worth a visit.

The best Chateaubriand we have ever had. We have been several times and the steak is amazing. Being steak lovers, we really appreciate this place for guaranteed taste and quality. The chef who we usually have, has long hair (apologies don’t know his name) and he honestly knows how to cook an amazing steak. Also great to experience the wagyu Chateaubriand. Great wine pairing and customer service too from the hosts and the team. We usually spend £200-£400 depending on the size of steak we get and wine we choose to pair it with.

Been a number of times food generally very good. Today though stood waiting whilst staff ate (11:50) I just wanted to book a table. Got a filthy look from a waitress who asked someone are we even open yet or something along those lines. Just looked hassled. Couldn’t be bothered so we left. Thanks for making my decision to go elsewhere today. I’m Sorry for disturbing your lunch in a restaurant. Won’t be back. Can highly recommend The Bonantist though a short walk away. Friendly staff happy to serve and welcome your business. Picture is the club steak which the first time I had it was amazing. The last was a lot fattier, not as good.

The meat is exceptional quality and cooked to perfection. The sister business is the Saltwater seafood and fish restaurant so it’s possible to order from both. Outstanding place and staff. Love it here.

Situated downstairs in Fenwick you will find Porterhouse. They have a vast selection of fresh fish and meats to choose from. We had the prawn and smoked salmon cocktail, followed with a steak to share. The food was excellent and the service was very good too. I have been told they to a very good Sunday lunch.

I really love this place as the food is simply delicious but it’s expensive. We ate lunch which consisted of bread and butter £4 each, this is totally unnecessary, happy to pay the big prices for luxury cuts of meat (of which there is plenty to choose from) but why charge so high for the basics? Ginger beer £5 for a bottle of Fentimans. So before we got to the actual food we were already £28 on the bill in two drinks each and bread! Starters were delicious, black pudding and egg on toast. For main course we ate beef stroganoff, the nicest I’ve e ever tasted and lamb chops - wonderful! Happy to pay £24.50 and £28.50 for these. Parmesan truffle fries are simply gorgeous! Total bill £99.40 for lunch. However, I would recommend and will return as I love the venue and the food is fantastic. I just don’t want to feel cheated over bread and water.

Wasn't offered any other menu's, steak was lovely but I didn't expect french fries when the menu said hipster chips, also ordered side of onion rings which were soaked in fat, only positive was the staff who were very polite and friendly

Enjoyable meal. Choose the fish mixed grill which provided a great selection of fish. Thoroughly enjoyed. Dessert was individual and special too. Chose a chocolate moose style with great presentation.

Sadly a disappointing meal altogether. We were having a quick meal before going to the theatre. Staff very friendly. We ordered three dishes - the crab and mango; the black pudding/egg on toast and some special chips. The chips didn't arrive but when we pointed this out we were given ordinary chips and told they wouldn't be added to bill -which they weren't. The crab/mango was nice but, to be honest, overpriced. My black pudding fairly burnt, egg burnt and some of the toast burnt. I did point this out and should really have sent it back - but didn't as we were in a bit of a hurry. But this was a dish that shouldn't have left the kitchen. So afraid we won't be going back or recommending it. Shame.

Fantastic dinner. Crab coronation was epic. Galacian steak was delicious. Friendly, attentive service. Highly recommend. Don’t be put off by location in a department store.

Second visit to this restaurant and it does not disappoint. Small problem with starter but resolved immediately. Definitely worth a visit.

Couldn't fault the food or the helpfulness of the staff but feel I gave it mention the toilet situation. If you need to use the loo you have to walk through the shop, go up the escalator to the first floor and then across first floor to the toilets next to Cafe 21. If you need to go after Fenwick is shut you have to be escorted by a member of the restaurant staff. Not too great Mr Laybourne. Thus would stop me going back or recommending to friends.

Have dined here a couple of times. Really relaxed but professional atmosphere. Staff friendly and efficient. My friend had a tempura starter which looked delicious and we shared the mixed grill which was really well cooked and very tasty.

I buy our Christmas dinner meat from here every year. The staff are always great at giving advice and making suggestions on how to prep at home. A fabulous place, where you can eat both the food from the adjoining Saltwater Fish Company, together with wonderful steaks. In common with many English restaurants, it's better to order "blue" if you want a good "rare" but that aside it's amazing, we started with ceviche (can't eat here without having this wonderful dish) and moved on to fillets - we both had the same. Spotted this place when shopping on Christmas Eve but it was jammers: the food looked great. So we booked for Boxing Day, and were not disappointed. Great quality steak perfectly cooked, fantastic steak pie, and delicious fish soup. Attentive and professional service. Not the cheapest but great value for money in terms of quality and quantity. Tuvimos un almuerzo muy sabroso aquí mientras compras navideñas en un concurrido sábado de noviembre. Mi marido tenía el Rump y yo tenía el filete Mignonette, teníamos chips gruesos de cur, verduras al vapor y salsa de pimienta y todo estaba cocinado a la perfección y estaba buenísimo. El servicio fue perfecto y tuvimos un par de copas de la casa roja, que también era muy sabrosa.

A friend and I had lunch here and ordered the ceaser salad with prawns. The salad was covered in a dressing and totally overpowered the salad. We mentioned it to the deputy manager who said in these exact words “well next time you order it I suggest you ask for the dressing on the side”. Totally unconcerned my friend could not eat it due to this.Very very disappointing attitude from the deputy manager. There are plenty of other places to eat in Newcastle and in fact within Fenwicks itself. I watch with interest to see if they respond to this review.

We booked a table two weeks ago for husbands birthday, we also requested a high chair for our boy. On the day when we arrive they say that they don’t have the table for us and they are very sorry.....

Great - it’s restaurant week in Newcastle and that means we get to eat at Porterhouse Grill in Fenwick’s for £18 (three course) or £15 (two courses) which is a great bargain! We love it there, the food is delicious, fresh, great meat cooked right in front of you if you choose to sit at the bar. It’s cool and trendy and feels like an indulgent treat where you can watch the hustle and bustle of Fenwick’s food hall whilst enjoying great food and drink. If you go there this week you’ll be able to try the food at a reduced price - we ate steak and eggs and lamb burger during this trip. Love it❤️

The food is very good, the beef loin medium cooking is my favourite, as I have ordered it on two different occasions and it was always fabulous. The food is pricy, we spent 60£ in two just ordering 2 mains and tap water, and no coffee or cakes or wine. We expected the high price as this is supposed to be a "fine dining" place but the meat, although high quality, it is not so expensive per se. I voted this restaurant "average" as the waiter appeared impolite when taking our orders. He looked condescendingly at me and my fiancé and when he misunderstood my fiancé order he said "Ahh, you want to share!", and after the misunderstanding, he totally ignored us for the rest of the lunch. We went at around 3 PM and the restaurant was almost empty, but no waiters approached us asking whether we need anything and I had to look at the waiters for a while before they finally realized that I wanted the bill - they were not serving the tables but rather chatting among themselves at the counter.I have mixed feelings about this place after the waiter suggested that my fiancé and I cannot afford two mains, and we will probably not go back.

Excellent food. We started with smoked salmon and the pork rib both of which were excellent. A Manhattan added to the amazing start. We then shared a mixed grill - plenty to eat and amazing value at less than £14 per person.We have been in the week and the service as excellent so it could have been the fact that it was a Saturday that we felt that this aspect of the experience had slipped - although by the time we sat down at 3pm things had slowed. We had parking and babysitters to consider and so had to find someone to give us our bill and pay. That said, the food and drink were excellent and I look forward to returning.

We went for my wife s birthday. I had a king Crab leg which was to die for, I then had a porterhouse steak which is normally shared between two but I pigged out on it myself My wife enjoyed her meal but I defubntely got the best deal. Not cheap but great quality and they will provide food from the seafood restaurant which they run next door. It is in Fenwicks food hall.

Went last year and had a great steak experience with the family, brilliant food and fantastic service... Paddy is a big miss for us. We booked for Sunday lunch but I have to say it is not as good as 21 for food and service. The starters were mediocre and service very slow. Not worth the 10% service charge which we have never felt being regular customers at the Laybourne Empire. Would have given an excellent for last years visit but average for this time.

Lovely setting, good service...However, on the recommendation of the staff I ordered the lamb. So poor was the cut of meat that I had to work hard to separate the flesh from the fat. Disappointing.

Love eating here the food and service never disappoint. First time of having Sunday lunch today and it was fantastic. Highly recommend this restaurant

We decided in view of the large portions on offer to skip starters and get into the main event in order to leave room for puddings.

There is a problem with this place. When you leave you just want to go back in again.

Would highly recommend the local smoked salmon. Hand cut chips were excellent. Quail scotch eggs yummy. Service good and much quicker than last visit.

The chicken cesar salad was good and the chicken schnitzel with a truffle mayo was really good, nice runny yolk on the egg. The truffle and parmesan chips were also good, but lacked a real truffle flavour. Trying to pay the bill took time, I'm hoping it was my dazzling personality that made them want me to stay

We had dinner at Pertehouse on Friday evening, itwasour second visit and wow what great food. I had a fillet steak with onion rings and fries, it was the best I have had by far. The steak was perfectly cooked, the service was excellent as was the decor.

We were attracted into Fenwicks this lunch time by the superb Snowman Christmas display in their windows.

Firstly, the restaurant is well designed and the food is superb however, the staff and lack of training do not go hand in hand with the prices your charging.

I came here with friends for lunch. We usually visit 2/3 times a month.

We came here for a birthday treat lunch. This really is a proper restaurant, not just a department store fast food place. We had a 800g big cut Porterhouse T-Bone to share with hipster chips (Parmesan and rosemary).

Saturday - think you need to book.It was busy.

We tend to eat in either broad chare or 21 (both Terry Laybourne resturants) quite often so when shopping on a Saturday afternoon decided it was about time to try Porterhouse. Resturant seemed half full but was advised we would have to wait 30mins. We suggested 45mins and left for a drink. On returning the resturant was busier and was told we would have to wait another 20 mins. It was basically take it or leave it even though there was a couple if empty tables. Decided to leave and take our business else where. We did have a lovely lunch and will not be returning

We had lunch in Fenwick’s famous Food Hall and the food was simply excellent. The lamb burger with goat’s cheese was definitely the best burger I’ve ever eaten. My wife had a Caesar salad and that too was excellent. The chicken was cooked to perfection. I’ll be going back next time I’m in Newcastle

We visited one Saturday afternoon and were pleasantly greeted and shown to our table which we had booked earlier in the week. We both ordered a prawn stater and steak for main course. We were told that the wine specials board included an Albariño and a Malbec. We ordered two small glasses of Albariño to accompany our starters and two small glasses of Malbec for the mains. Both wines went really well with the food. The food was also very nice. When the bill came I was staggered at the price of the wine. The two 175ml Albariño’s were over £19 and the two 175ml Malbec’s in excess of £27. I just cannot see how they can justify these extortionate prices for the wine. I would go back for a meal but I certainly would not order any wine. To add to my disbelief they automatically put a 10% Service charge on. So the bill came to £134 which I feel was totally excessive for a lunch which was decent but certainly not exceptional.

The food ingredients and quality are superb I would highly recommend it, we had a delicious lunch here the staff and efficient, knowledgeable and friendly. Whilst we just had an appetiser and main the desserts looked delicious

Been a few months since we have been. However so many places do service better, so folks, perhaps needs to be said

First visit today steak very nice not many in found atmosphere a bit cold staff need to smile a bit more and make you feel welcome for the price you pay. Cheese board a disappointment not worth £8.50 would not hurry back

I had read reviews and was keen to try the place. The service was very good. I had a steak, it was cooked to my requirement. I shall return as and when I am in Newcastle.

Had looked forward to trying this restaurant but left pretty disappointed.
