Coffee Trader in Newcastle upon Tyne

It was my favourite place in the past but it’s getting less inviting every time I go there. Some staff borderline rude. Drinks very expensive. Shame

Perfect. Just the type of cafe I want on my day out

Visited with my Brother and friend. I suggested it as have been a few times and absolutely loved it. Unfortunately today was a lot different sadly. I don't know if the lady serving was stressed because it was busy or she was having a bad day. We ordered one hot chocolate, one cappuccino and one pop. 3 cakes. The lady was snappy and short with us. We got the hot chocolate, pop and the cakes. Which my friend took to our table and I stood waiting for my cappuccino. When one was put one the counter I assumed it was mine. The woman snapped sharply that it was someone else's and she only took pay for one hot drink and if I wanted another I would have to queue again. She pulled the cup away from me and left me feeling like I was trying to steal. I went to our table and added up everything and it did indeed come to the price that included a cappuccino. I went back after the counter to query. I asked her to check the receipts. She did with an 'Well I know I'm right attitude.' Her face fell when she proved wrong. I did recieve an grudging apology and I refund. My advice would be, be careful ask for a receipt and double check everything. I would go back but I would be more cautious.

Nice cozy place offering great coffee and decent comfort food. I always have their club sandwich, I love it so much. I’ve been coming here for years and have always enjoyed the simplicity of the place and it’s great it is just next to Northumberland street.

Very nice coffee shop on a quiet road. Really good cakes and breakfast, good service and nice staff. It looks quite clean and the music as background is agreeable.

A member of staff asked me to leave, claiming I had just walked in and not ordered anything. I had actually ordered a meal earlier and spend a tenner, and the empty plates had just been taken away. I politely mentioned I had already ordered and that it must've been mistaken identity. However, the member of staff insisted they watch everyone who enters and was sure I had just walked in without ordering. I was talked down to in an extremely condescending manner like I was a child, essentially accused of theft by using the cafe and not paying - which was extremely embarassing as it was busy at the time. The staff member (again in a disgustingly condescending and threatening tone) said they would go and check if I did indeed come in without paying. I understand that often people come in and sit down without paying, and that staff will be vigilant as a result. If the staff member came back and apologised I would've just moved on. However, they never returned as they knew they'd made a mistake. They didn't have the guts to own up and apologise, hence the 1* review. It's such a shame as the food is nice and the coffee is okay.

Don't bother coming here. Tried numerous times for coffee and cake after work on Friday. Apparently open until 7pm, but all cakes taken off display and unavailable when we arrive (16:45)

A really lovely cafe with plenty of seating and multiple tv's for customers to watch whilst enjoying their food and drink. Good variety of food options and a great place for breakfast or lunch. The staff are really friendly, and the atmosphere of the place makes it one of my favourite cafes. 10/10.

What a canny place this is little golden gem sandwiches are excellent the little blonde lass was very polite and sandwiches really nice will call again my new cafe 👍👍👍

Terribly rude waitress with an Irish accent who feels the need to shout at people for sitting in the wrong seating area 90 minutes before closing, nothing wrong with telling me I cant sit in that area like a human instead of shouting at me (probably assumes I cant speak english and feels entitled to speak to me like a moron). GB News constantly on in the background. Broken down sofas. Coffee Trader isnt the welcoming warm space it used to be.

Been coming here for the best part of 15 years but recently I've noticed it's gone down hill and doesn't seem to be improving. First change I noticed is that they always have GB News on which is a very clear message to their customers. Secondly, most of the staff talk to you like you've insulted them or you're a nuisance for coming in and ordering something (maybe its just the people of colour who get treated like this?). Several times I've gone in at 5, baring in mind they close at 7 and they close half of the tables and serve your drink in a takeaway cup. Last three times I've been in the staff are packing up two hours before closing. Thought I would give it the benefit of the doubt one last time but when I went in today, the server was lovely (red and black hair). We proceeded to sit down only to get literally shouted at by a lady with pale pink hair who said the area was closed off and shouted thank you whilst walking away, again way before closing time. There is a kind and humane way to talk to people but this lady clearly forgot that she works in customer service today. Management seriously need to reassess how they are running the place. Staff are always closing up early and it's not what it used to be. 15 years of coming here, but never going back.

An great place to relax while shopping, plenty of space and tables. A good selection of sandwiches and cakes on offer and a good selection of coffees. Also there are toilet facilities available for the patrons. There are also tables outside for those who wish to smoke.

Have been here a few times now and being celiac have gluten free. The cheese n onion toastie is a favourite with me and they had a cappuccino cake which I was tempted to get. After eating the lovely toastie which came with coleslaw, I was too full to try the cake but will definitely keep it in mind for next time! Staff are great and there are plenty of seats.

A great coffee shop maybe a bit cold even inside but the coffee was great to get some work done.

I was meeting my friend for lunch here today and as I was sat waiting for her to arrive a waitress with reddish hair clearing a table opposite said to me ‘do you have a drink?’, I said no and without letting me explain she said across the area in a really harsh tone ‘you have to move on then!’ I left immediately but it really upset me and was quite humiliating especially as it was across a table and loud/ I felt like people were staring. I’ve been here several times before and now I’m reluctant to return unfortunately:(

My go to coffee spot in the city centre. Staff are friendly and the drinks are huge and tasty. Decent range of food too

Nice vibe in here, cosy sofas and the coffee is good compared to some other places--doesn't taste as "third wave" which I can't always get along with. I've been here myself and with other people over the years. The food is also pretty nice. I'm a little nonplussed as of late though, because they seem to start turfing out customers an entire half hour before closing, which I'm pretty sure is a little extreme compared to normal for a coffee shop even when taking closing into account. There were still a number of customers sat in who WERE having a relaxed time. I'm taking it slightly worse because I paid £3.75 for a coffee only to have a paper cup dumped in front of me and I was planning my time around opening hours--I'll just avoid this place when it gets later in the day because I've been caught out by timings a few times, which seem to be a little inconsistent depending on who's on the clock. Please, if you're eager to leave early then just change your times so that customers get to know and respect them. I know the service industry is hard, but customers need accurate information like this and maybe tone down the hostility. I wouldn't tell a paying audience over a microphone to leave just because I want to shave off some time and I don't normally expect that attitude at a coffee shop either, unless it really WAS closing at 6:30 and your opening hours are wrong on Maps. The sad thing is that I was having a nice online date with someone and that had to be cut short for the sake of five or ten minutes. I've been able to sit in Caffe Nero a little later, so I'll just go there when I need more time. Sorry guys.

Great spot for breakfast, coffee and cakes. Staff are super sweet and helpful and everything we had was delicious. Loads of space to sit, both tables with chairs and couches to chill on. Really nice!

I am on a budget and want to know prices before purchasing. Cold drinks need to be priced in cabinet or if not, then on a list. I do not wish to wait till I arrive at till to find out how much I owe.

We spotted this great coffee shop on our first day in Newcastle and decided that it would be perfect for getting breakfast the next day. It is tucked away down a side street but has quite a long footprint-really what caught our eye as we passed was that it shared an entrance with a tanning centre. There is Aldo outdoor seating at the front. There was so much choice when we went in for breakfast with a great range of hot drinks, pastries and all manner of sweet treats plus a very comprehensive menu. We opted for scrambled eggs, mine on gluten free bread. It was delicious! I would have loved to try one of the cakes and pastries but was too full… There was a lovely vibe in the coffee shop-all the staff were friendly and helpful; nothing was too much trouble. The clientele varied across the age groups and included family groups, young people working on laptops and lone diners. By the time we left there was quite a queue at the counter as it is obviously very popular. Will definitely visit again when we are next in Newcastle.

Great atmosphere, staff are lovely, food is fast and tasty and the drinks are my favourite. I've been coming here since I discovered it in 2005- 2006 and never stopped. (Should consider vegan options for further success) 🫶🙌❤️

As inside is busy and crowded all the time, I love enjoying my coffee outside. The staff is always nice there for you. Outside tables should be kept clean 😌

Came in to get a coffee as needed somewhere to chill with my dog as we had been out all day. Lovely staff made me very welcome brought water and a puppacino out for my dog. Lovely friendly staff great coffee great little place. Thanks for your great service 👍

This place is a cute independent coffee place. I found the coffee very milky and not really strong enough with a distinct flavour. I asked for syrup in my coffee and paid a hefty price and they forgot to add it. I took it back to ask and they just pumped syrup in it instead of remaking it. I asked for it to be not too hot but it was scolding unfortunately. I did have a slice of cake too which was nothing special. I did like the atmosphere but the coffee not being made quite right is not the best when it's a coffee shop !

Terrible. 17:15 Sunday 23rd July. Told I can't order a pot of tea at 17 15 "because the pot wash is turned off". Man with a ponytail working the front. Obviously wants an early finish. He can't simply leave it on the side and wash it in the morning. Quality service that. Not really.

Bizarre service experience.. had been in a group of 10 at 4.30 they hardly managed to accommodate as they said have limited staff and near to closing time ( which was 7pm), empty tables were cleaned off so they cannot accommodate us there (wow!).. on top of that they said only take away cups is possible (pic) because again limited staff and closing time ( soon after 2.30h).. will never go again..

I have been coming here for so long and loved the place. I came here today with my office friends. The place closes at 7 and we arrived here at 4pm and the staff said most of the space is closed as we have cleaned it already, gave only take away cups as they said we have cleaned already. I felt really awkward as I suggested the place to everyone and we didnt have any place to sit.

Lovely atmosphere, liked the seating plan and options for chairs or sofas. Not too loud so great place to catch up on work or with friends. Friendly and pleasant staff

Edit: went the other day after a good couple of months, new faces who I’ve never seen before. Not the most professional! Not sure where the usual faces were but the new ones were too busy chatting amongst themselves whilst some were waiting in line to be served! No smiles, no courteousness! and a lot of commotion common from the kitchen, could be heard from around the corner. Will try another day and hopefully the usual staff will be there. Been frequenting this place since my early teens and I am now in my early thirties! Has had various decor changes and staff changes over the years but all in all still feels like a proper coffee shop. Good selection of hot and cold drinks plus they do panini's and melts 😋

Have written five star reviews for Coffee Trader in the past. We used to visit when our son was at university here and it was fabulous. Excellent friendly service and delicious food. Unfortunately the waitress who served us today was less than enthusiastic, the food was mediocre at best and the table wasn't clean. Shall look elsewhere when next visiting Newcastle.

I loved this café. It is nice and big and airy downstairs. There is also outside seating. It is just off the main shopping street in Newcastle centre. I had a delicious orange hot chocolate and a chocolate shortbread traybake which was lovely. My daughter had a toasted sandwich which she said was excellent. I would certainly go again when I’m in Newcastle.

I love this place. Great coffee. Clean. Great staff. A nice place to meet friends, do remote working or just get away from the city hustle and bustle.

Visited here, with my son, for lunch. Been here many times and I have to say it's one of our favourite places for coffee/tea/lunch. Always a good selection of sandwiches etc, a good choice of hot drinks and plenty tables and seats on offer. Never have we not been able to find somewhere to sit. Love it!

The cafe has a variety of food and drinks and the vibe of the place is great! The hot chocolates are amazing and I was excited to see that they had some “school cake” too!

Visit here weekly. Sometimes for cuppa and cake or a lunch. Good atmosphere,age mixture,plenty seats,pleasant staff.
