Tempted in by a friendly smile, we arrived quite early and were a bit worried that it was not fuller, however the evening saw a constant ebb and flow of diners.Hastings Bouillabaisse tempted me, for while regional I tend to think of Bouilabaise as one course fish meal that has particular flavourings. It was perfectly pleasant, but would not have been identifiable to James Bond by having distinctive proportions of fennel, saffron and Cayenne Peppers as in his Marseilles Restaurants. The rich varieties of other eaters though did not disappoint. Did the sharing two blind dates meets again?Nice wine and a beer for 2 £75.I'd go again and take friends.

Fish. Enjoyable meal. Thirst quenching beer followed by nice wine.As we more more in need of a meal for nourishment than for tastes maybe I underplayed the Hastings Bouillabaise. I suppose I was wanting the James Bond dimensions on Fennel, Cayenne Pepper and Saffron, but that would have been Marsielles not Hastings Bouillabaise.Really enjoyed the people watching.Lovely staff who actually tempted us in.Go again

I love the website for this restaurant and booked for a 'post beach' supper. We had such a lovely meal and experience that I wanted to write a review. I had lots of tempura prawns to start and then delicious duck with the best skinny chips I've had since I went to France as a child. The service was friendly and we loved sitting outside watching the people pass by. It was just like being on a relaxing holiday. We will be back for sure.

A beautiful summer evening led us to Hastings and a walk along the seafront. We then decided to stay for dinner and were lucky enough to find this lovely little restaurant in Hastings Old Town (George Street). We loved everything - the waiting staff were excellent, friendly and efficient; the background music was of our era and not too loud and added to the relaxed atmosphere; our wines were good and both our starters and mains were first class - my bouillabaisse, in particular, was superb. We will definitely eat here again.

We went here for my little sisters birthday. The guys here were really friendly and we got excellent service. Wine selection was good. Food was good and the seafood fresh- the restaurant aspires to great things and it's nearly there. Fine tweaking the dish prices and fine tuning the portion sizes as well as the flavour combinations, and this little number will be a shining star in an otherwise fairly unremarkable British seaside town high street. Watch this space...

My wife and 1 and another couple were wandering the Hastings Old Town, after watching the terrific Tom Williams perform a set on the Stade. In the late sun we were feeling hungry and wandered in and out of a number of restaurants - booked up, empty, not the right feel. The we happened upon the Pomegranate and managed to grab the window table, the last avaialble. The consensus was to give it a try as we had heard mix reviews from friends about the restaurant, so here we were. The staff were attentive and not pushy, it was a warm and so the relaxed atmosphere created a light mood. I think there is something appealing about a menu with a limited selection, but a good cross section of variety. We went straight for the main courses. my friend and I both went for the steak, one rare and one blue. Not often have I found a restaurant that actually cooks the steak to that fine line and nails both.A little disappointed with the fat chips, but as a meat eater, they couldn't take away from a superb steak. Dessert-wise Banoffee Pie and it was a well executed example - not too big and not too small, a good finish to a lovely night out.

Tried this restaurant out today after reading an article in a magazine that highly recommended it. Whilst most seaside towns provide excellent fish and chip restaurants it's always nice to find one that goes a bit further in both decor, service, and most importantly with fresh seafood. Egg Benedict with a haddock take on it is one example. I had the juiciest moules frites I've had in a long while. It's not perfect, the halloumi burger served in a brioche roll was a bit short on the cheese side, but overall the food was excellent. If you see an empty table my advice is to take it.

So, we went to Hastings, as you do. It was a May Bank Holiday weekend. It was a Sunday. Jack in the Green festival was in full swing. So, Morris Dancers and Clog Dancers, scary people with bells, sticks, straw, make-up.true British eccentricity and we loved it. Even better for me, there was a Battala Band.So all pubs full to the gunwales, 40 minute wait for a roast. No, we couldn't do that, let's find somewhere else. We walked down the high street and found Pomegranate. The menu looked good, different, not a Sunday Roast in sight. It was centred around fish and salads.Strangely enough it was a tad late, around 3.30, when we went in, so it was virtually empty, lunch time having been and gone.We chose a glass of rose and both had the hot goat's cheese salad with beetroot and walnut. Utterly delicious, the walnuts were coated in some form of sugar, a really nice touch.Mains were a Gurnard, pan fried in. Utter etc, and a Gurnard Nicoise. Both very good, the Gurnard is a good meaty fish.Pud was a panna cota with rhubarb three ways. Again, lovely.Staff were polite and chatty, they knew the food well. We would happily return here for good clean, fresh, healthy, tasty dishes.

After reading the reviews I was looking forward to visiting and I spoke to a lovely waitress at lunchtime to make my booking. Its a lovely shabby chic cosy restaurant. It was going to be a busy evening they had lots of bookings but we were going early. We chose from the set menu and it started well with our starters and the childrens meals but for our mains the fish was undercooked, raw in the middle and it was cold and sloppy. We returned both our mains and it came back slopped on the plate and barely edible. I had white wine and it wasn't sufficiently chilled, luckily I had some ice in my water to chill it down. We then made a prompt exit. This is a family run business and I don't like to be negative but it's the truth.

Reasonable prices as under £40 a person for 2 courses and plenty of wine. We enjoyed it so much we went back for brunch the next day. Breakfast stacks were a hit!! Best bloody Mary's!! We eat out a lot and have been to Pomegranate quite a few times. There are a number of reasons we go back - firstly the staff are friendly and helpful. Our waitress this time was willing to make suggestions (without being pushy), ensured we had everything we needed and was upbeat and fun. The food was brilliant and complimented well by the recommended wine. Yes the menu is quite small but I would rather have a few excellent dishes to choose from rather than a lot of mediocre ones. I had asparagus with a poached egg, Scallops and Belly pork and shared a panna cotta - all of these were cooked brilliantly, arrived hot and were totally delicious. Well done again!

This year we chose Pomegranate in Hastings Old Town for our family meal on Christmas Eve and we had a great time. We couldn't get there until 9pm, but they kept our reservation and there was still plenty of choice on the a la carte menu for all courses, with something to please everyone, including game dishes and freshly caught local fish.. Service was friendly and never hurried; the window table we had was convivial and felt private from other diners. A group of ten of us went for the set Christmas meal on Friday. Lovely atmosphere and helpful and attentive staff. Unfortunately our evening was spoilt by cold food and plates for several of us. When we pointed this out the waitress replied with "We don't do hot plates". I later heard from my sister at the other end of the table that they had warned her the plate was hot. Confusing! They did offer us a free bottle of wine as compensation and were keen to rectify the problem. The food was tasty and otherwise good. My sister is a wheelchair user and as they had put her by the door it meant she had to move every time someone came in and out. Not wanting to make a fuss she instead gave up on her pudding. As the place was tight on space and they had fitted extra covers in, the person behind my sister refused to move even when a friend asked if she would, it made it very uncomfortable for my sister. The waitress also said don't worry , she'll move. Not ideal when you are trying to eat.

We met friends for lunch at Pomegranate on a recent visit to Battle and Brighton and were delighted with the choice. The restaurant is situated in the old town and it neatly matches the charm of the general vicinity but the food is where it really excelled for me. Our party of six ordered the king prawns in tempura batter to start and all agreed that they were delicious - plain and simple and not a massive portion but cooked to perfection. My main course of gurnard was a first for me - a beautiful, firm white fish - accompanied by sautéed potatoes and other vegetables and I would certainly order it again. Others ordered skate - again declared fantastic and the huss wrapped in pancetta was equally brilliant. Together with a couple of bottles of Viognier the bill (with tip) came to £30 per head which was considered to be good value. In summary we would definitely return to Pomegranate on a future visit to Hastings.

We were a party of 6 celebrating a birthday. From the minute we walked in the door we were made to feel as if we were old friends and nothing was too much trouble. Although the a la carte menu seemed quiet limited, the waitress also produced a specials menu, which had a good selection, albeit only one or two of some items, which I liked as I felt the produce was fresh and not frozen and basically when it's gone it's gone....the waitress had a good knowledge of the dishes and the local produce. We all had fish starters followed by fish main courses all cooked to perfection, the waitress kept an eye on the water/bread and wine and made sure we were fully 'topped up' at all times. We all had desert and I have to say the panacotta was possibly the best I have ever tasted. The bill arrived and I thought it was fantastic food at a reasonable price... I had the tandoori hallumi which was tasty and very filling. The cod nicoise also looked extremely good and a very generous portion. The wine list is a little in the pricey side.

One of my favourite restaurants for lunch in the old town. Food and service always good but need to get in early as top dishes tend to run out. Menu is constantly changing with seasonal dishes especially fish and love the home made bread.

Our food arrived very late. One main course was not as advertised and was overcooked. The worse of it was the way the waitresses dealt with this when we mentioned it to them. They were defensive and dismissive. The starters were great but everything else poor. We left the restaurant feeling disappointed and upset.

Small menu, much of which was not available. Waitress was eager and overbearing wanting us to order her personal favourites (skate) which we did not! Really don't appreciate the personal opinion of the waitress upon my choice of food/wine. Waitress also burst into song which in a small restaurant is very annoying. Starter of beef lacked horseradish and fish cakes were only one! Food ok but won't return as felt I was sitting in someone's front room. Poor ambience although loved the tea lights but please do not EVER comment on items left on the plate such as 'so you don't like beet root or mushrooms' (items left by me on starter and main). How very rude.

A small restaurant in the old town in Hastings. Simple décor, focus very much on the food. We had lunch for 2 (didn't book, but I would in future, especially in season on a nice day - 01424 429221). There was a short but interesting brunch menu (12 - 3.30), fish nicoise looked particularly tempting, also fish cakes. But we went for lunch, choosing from a great selection of local fish and lamb on the specials board. Gurnard was perfectly cooked, and extremely tasty, as was the plaice. Service was a little slow, but it was very busy and everything was cooked fresh to order. I suspect, it was such a foul day, they didn't expect to be quite so busy. Didn't have room for pud, but that looked good also. Meal for 2 with a couple of glasses of house wine (good range), £45 roughly (service not included). So thrilled to find this lovely restaurant offering such a good choice of well cooked and delicious locally caught fish dishes. Will definitely be back.

Had to take a late reservation (9pm) as they were booked out (not their fault and we don't mind eating late). We arrived and were seated at a very cramped table towards the back of the restaurant. We waited quite a while to order drinks and our food and the starter didn't arrived until we had been in the restaurant for 40 minutes - so it was getting really late by that stage. The restaurant was boiling hot and naturally the people at the tables near the door weren't keen on the hosts idea of air conditioning... opening the door every so often. It never really solved the problem and made the meal really uncomfortable. The mussels were very good (I had been recommended to the place for them) but the Goats Cheese salad was pretty average. The Seafood Platter my partner and I shared was rather disappointing and at £23 I'm glad we didn't have one each. The prawns were not shell on and could easily have been from an Iceland pack as they were presented on a skewer and were completely tasteless. The mackerel bruschetta went cold very quickly and was fairly tasteless too, as was the gurnard fillet. The two pate's were really bizarre flavours (I think on was Scallop and Fennel which I found awful). The cuttlefish was the only saving grace - it had a tasty coating.Really felt the meal was a waste of £40 - should have stuck with a large portion of the Moules and left it at that.

Having been redely turned down for a table at Whites Seafood and Steak House, I ended up in Pomegranate one afternoon and didnt regret it. Both members of staff were extremely helpful and I was quickly placed on a table where thr menu was explained to me. Being a seafood fan I chose the seafood platter which didnt disappoint. It arrived promptly and the portion was huge! I loved thedelicate well seasoned mackerel pate and the gunnard terinne absolutely beautifully executed with a lovely piece of ciabbata bread. The fish platter contained beautifully executed fish in a bouliabesse sauce, with large bits of squid in a lemon sauce with a touch of garlic and the freshest juiciest mussels I have eateb in ages! The large prawns on he skewer were chargrilled to perfection and added a different dimension to the dish. I enjoyed my fish platter immensely with a large glass if white wine.Overall my experience was outstanding I wont hesitate to go there again next time Im in Hastings.

I have eaten here twice now in the last month & I can't wait to head back. Pomegranate is a bijou restaurant in a really pretty pedestrianised street and I imagine sitting outside in summer will be a real treat. On our first visit the waitress was so polite, professional & friendly. She meticulously went through the specials with us and answered all our queries with a smile, helping us to make our choiceMy partner ordered the Fish Taster which was enormous & - not mentioning any names - he managed to mumble "much better than the Michelin place" about halfway through. I had the scallops & belly pork which was perfectly cooked and the salad that I hastily ordered (I had forgotten about greens) arrived within 30 seconds & was divine. We shared a decent bottle of Malbec, paid a very reasonable bill & walked home along the seafront. The second time I ate here was just a week or so later & I had the skate, which I must say was the most delicious skate I have ever eaten as it was cooked to perfection & a large enough piece to really fill me up. I've read some of the bad reviews on here and it makes me a little sad because I had the most positive restaurant experience ever and I can't give sweet little Pomegranate enough gold stars.

After walking up and down George street in Hastings trying to decide which restaurant to have some brunch in we actually didn't decide to eat here at first, plumping for another place on George street. But the greeting (or almost lack of it!!) was so awful, that we decided to go to (what was!!) our "second" choice. And thank heavens we did. The Pomegranate was everything we wanted. When we went in they had obviously just opened for lunch. We received a warm and friendly welcome, the lady who served us took the time to explain the "specials" board with meticulous detail (she really knew her menu!), and (unbeknown to her) we had already chosen. The food was GORGEOUS - all the ingredients tasted fresh as a daisy, and very reasonably priced. We were happy to recommend Eggs Benedict and Breakfast Stack to other diners too. Unfortunately we were unable to eat dessert (though we WERE very tempted!!). The atmosphere was so relaxing too with an eclectic choice of music - not too loud.If you're in Hastings and are looking for somewhere to have lunch/dinner, then the Pomegranate is a must. This is a "George Street Gem". Don't try anywhere else until you've tried the Pomegranate.

Pomegranate is located in George Street in the Old Town. It has a very bohemian atmosphere and was busy and became busier as we eat. We were greeted by the waitress, who was quirky bubbly and very charming. Our table was close to the kitchen and the toilets, but that wasn't too much of a distraction. The Waitress provided us with the specials and discussed what was good in here belief which was a good touch. We felt slightly rushed by the Head waitress and whilst we didn't take our time it seemed we were a cover to get through and move on. The food was good though the Pheasant I had was slightly dry but overall the starters and main courses were good. I do think though that more could be done with the restaurant if some covers were reduced and a bit more time given. The food could come slightly slower and a bit more time spent enjoying each course. I would return just to see if it was just a busy Saturday night and that affected our visit.

Tried to book a table online about four days earlier. Was told they'd get back to me but they didn't. This happened twice. Then rang and was told I was booked in. Had a missed call, so rang the no - it was them confirming the booking and saying we had a good table by the window. Two minutes later a call saying they couldn't fit me in as there was a block booking earlier and the whole restaurant was taken. Disappointed as this restaurant was recommended to me by a friend for a special meal with my daughter. Not impressed with the inefficiency, cross communication and feeling we had been ousted for a larger booking !!!

A friend recommended this restaurant to us, and in terms of the food we were not disappointed. We both had pork belly which was perfectly cooked with nice crunchy crackling. The dishes on the menu are fairly priced. The restaurant decor is lovely. However, we were seated on a small table at the rear of the restaurant which was really cramped we kept bumping into the poor people sat either side of us. The restaurant was just too hot, so we didn't stay long enough for pudding because it became unbearable. I would try this restaurant one more time because the food was so good, but I would insist on a table at the front to see if this improves the ambience.

After eating there before I was surprised at how bad New Years Eve dinner actually was. Waited ages between courses and when they did come what wasn't missing from the plate was barely warm. No atmosphere considering it was New Year. Don't think I need to say anymore as the previous reviewers have said it all. Will not be likely to revisit this restaurant, especially as there are so many excellent places in the Old Town to eat.

We booked a table for 2 people at 9 o'clock (the second sitting) and considering it was New Year’s Eve, and reservation only, I can't see how they managed to mess it up as much as they did. They knew exactly how many people they had coming in, what time they were arriving, and the size of the parties. The starters were ok nothing to write home about, but the real problem was the main courses and the huge delay. After waiting nearly 2 hours (we arrived dead on 9pm) we had to ask for our main courses. They came out of the kitchen a few minutes later but it really wasn't worth the wait. Both our dishes were cold. My boyfriend's was missing a part of the dish, which came out of the kitchen a few minutes later. It was only half way through eating mine, when I stumbled across a teaspoon worth of red cabbage that I remembered it was supposed to have come with the dish, and then I realised that I also had about a teaspoons worth of mash. Basically I had a small mountain of venison that was a bit dried out in a mass of sauce. We were so hungry that we ate anyway rather than send anything back and wait even longer. We then ordered pudding and coffee at the same time to try and speed the evening along. The coffees came, we drank them.....and then we waited quite some time before deciding to cancel the puddings and pay the bill. By this time it was getting very close to midnight and the atmosphere in the restaurant was pretty joyless. The serving staff tried their best but nothing seemed to be coming out of the kitchen, and when it did it was a disappointment. Our waitress had offered us a complimentary port when we said the mains were cold, but I was so bloated from drinking so much wine and water whilst we waited for our food that I couldn't face it. In fairness, along with the puddings that we didn't have, the second bottle of wine that we couldn't finish (we hadn't actually wanted it and only ordered as we were waiting so long), was removed from the bill.We got out of the restaurant 10 minutes before midnight but we were feeling pretty flat from the experience so New Year's didn't exactly get seen in with good cheer. I won’t be rushing back any time soon!

I am local and having tried the restaurant previously with a hit and miss result, ever the optimist tried once again just before xmas. Apart from the three in our party the place was empty, we had been attracted by the chalk board outside tempting us with the Sunday roast, which according to the waitress was a new venture, the meal was good enough for us to book for a party of six of us at 20.00 on New Year's Eve, big big mistake. New Year's EveWe arrived on time, the place was packed to the rafters and the atmosphere was good. Our table wasn't ready and they asked if we would mind waiting, which was no problem at all: It was New Year's Eve and we were ready to enjoy ourselves and not make an issue of any situation at all.We eventually were seated at our table and offered the set menu which on the face of it seemed good. Two of us had the sea food soup which tasted good and included mussels that were stuck in their shells -poor show for Hastings famous for seafood! I could go on about starters and the fact that my pork main course was tough, cold and almost inedible however as those of us who had the pork made no complaint I merely mention as the worst is yet to come:Two of the party ordered the venison which was totally inedible and cold, the waitress was called over and a quiet respectful complaint made, the waitress came back informing our party that the chef had cooked it correctly and thus inferring that they had no idea how venison should be when it arrives on the table - whether you like what you order sometimes happens and is never a chefs fault but I think we can all agree edible it should be. Then another lady (waitress, manager or owner) came to the table and again reiterated how the venison was cooked and offered the two customers concerned complimentary drinks, which they accepted and left it at that. The service charge was included in the tip which we after some discussion between us agreed to pay as the waitress was good and it was in no way a reflection on her that most of our meals were well below standard and some inedible. I eat out at least two or three times a week and almost never pay for bad food or poor service however in view of the occasion and in no way wishing to spoil the atmosphere not only on our table in the restaurant we paid up and left disappointed with the food. Sometimes things go wrong that is not important but how you deal with them is.Will not use again and would not recommend. Poor show Pomegranate and no email in order to write direct.

I am a local and have visited this restaurant before. It has a fabulous decor and atmosphere, the staff are warm and welcoming and I was hoping this visit was going to be a bit of an improvement on my last. Unfortunately the food let it down again. Because the restaurant looks so good and the menu always promises to be something special, it raises your expectations. The restaurant was only half full, but the service was slow, the food was bland and the portions small. I actually used the salt and pepper on the table which is something I never do. Such a shame as we probably won't be visiting again any time soon and I would really like to like this restaurant.

I took my partner and daughter in here for lunch on a gloomy grey autumn afternoon but there was nothing cold and dreary about the atmosphere and food here. The lovely Latvian waitress was very friendly and helpful and the restaurant had a lovely homely feel about it, very tidy and modern but with some lovely decor and not a touch of pretentiousness. I had the gurnard for a main course and it was superb. I thoroughly recommend you try this fish. The chef was only young but he had some top skills. A great lunch in a lovely venue.

Popped in Saturday evening. Didin't have a reservation, but they had just been let down , so we were lucky. We sat by the door, which at first thought was a bad thing, but it soon got very warm and people sitting at the back of the restuarant were constantly popping outside to cool down. The people sitting next to us were regulars and we quickly struck up a conversation. They recommended the skate and venison, unfortunately for us there was only one portion of skate left and no venison. So we had the Gournard (a type of flying fish) which was easily the nicest white fish that i've eaten in ages. The waitresses were quick and efficent and the food was perfectly cooked. So to sum up 1) make a reservation,2) get there early to be able to chose from the full menu and 3) sit near the front of the resturant.

We popped in for a quick bacon sandwich and coffee before shopping on Saturday. Quick service, tasty bacon sandwiches and the reason for this review is to call out the service we observed to others. The server with the brown hair and beard obviously knew his locals, and listening to him chatting to his regular clients was heartwarming, as for many he may be their only interaction that day. He was explaining to a lady that he was due to be off and that he would be back and that she wouldn’t see him for a few weeks. The young lady that delivered the sandwich to us was equally charming but both my husband and I sat listening to the chat across the counter and both said how nice it was to hear. So well done to the server, great customer service goes a long way!
