Busy Saturday lunch time but we managed to get a table for 2 on the balcony. Watch out for the seagulls though! Service was efficient and friendly. Food was big portions, tasty chips (though too crispy for my co-diner) and a lovely fresh piece of fish.

Perfection. I don't often award 5 stars but this place deserves it. The cod was fresh, light, full of flavour and perfectly cooked as was the batter and the chunky chips. My monkfish really was exceptional and the best I have ever eaten, anywhere. Gastro pubs eat your heart out - Maggie keeps it simple and that's juts how fish and chips should be. Stunning views, great value and excellent service; this place is what good food is all about. Thank you.

The most important thing is that both the boss and the waitress are Polish - that's a plus for a good morning :). Moreover, the food is delicious. We took a plate with flounder and shrimps, squid and other seafood and additions. Everything tasted delicious and the quantity was impossible to eat for two people. I recommend M. Greguła

I ordered takeaway haddock & chips with a gherkin. Told it would be 30mins; asked to leave my name and number and I’d be called when it was ready. I turned up 35mins later, having not been called, and found my takeaway had been left on the side waiting to be collected. I opened it up there and then and found barely a handful of cold chips and a cold fish. I complained about the portion and the coldness (it must have been sat there more than 15mins), but they weren’t apologetic and in fact almost belligerent. After a bit of a confrontation they reluctantly added some hot chips. I went on my way, regretting deciding to wait so long and regretting the restaurant price for takeaway. Sitting on a bench, I found the gherkin was old and very soft and swollen so I didn’t eat it. The fish was alright but would have been nicer if not cold, but the chips I found to be disgustingly overcooked - the seagulls enjoyed most of them, but I felt ill from the greasiness of the few I’d eaten. The staff running the place had English as a second language; I’m not sure any grew up on fish n chips and so perhaps have no quality expectations, and think £15 for a small fish and a few terrible chips is reasonable. £4 for a can of soft drink certainly isn’t reasonable. They even skimp on the cutlery - cheap rounded knife and fork which you can’t really stab into the food. A business milking tourists.

I think it is a must have place, a fish restaurant in the historic fishermen area of the old city. There are many fish and chips places around, but I chose this as it was top rated. Indeed, I liked it. Sat at the balcony with the sea view. Got the catch of the day (plaice and huss), dish size was great, fish was fresh and tasty. Facilities are clean. Girls are serving the guests well and doing their best. However it is a super busy place with a large flow of tourists, so book beforehand!!!

We had a recent very bad experience at Maggie's , disappointing not because food wasnot up to the mark, as that can happen sometimes at any resturant, but because of staff behaviour. We are regulars at Maggies and are actualy known by a lot of old staff members. On our last visit my husband's fish had a funny smell and taste and he told the staff member about it. This is the first time in almost 3 years of regularly visiting Maggies that we have registered a problem and made the staff aware of it . Staff instead of being understanding insisted there is nothing wrong with the fish and tried to force him to eat it... he couldn't as the taste n smell persisted despite the fact that staff member,I think she was manager, got the fish fried again. He couldn't eat it and left the food. They charged us full for the meal. No apologies made. Pathetic customer service. Never going back again. Maggies owners should send their staff for some customer relation training.

Made a last minute booking 20 minutes before 6 of us wanted to eat and were allocated a table with no problems- very lucky because we stumbled upon a real gem. The decor and atmosphere was just right for this lovely little restaurant. The ladies that served our table were lovely and very attentive. The little touches make all the difference for example I asked if I could have my daughters beans with my meal as she didn’t want them and it was remembered and they were served to me as opposed to having to pass them down the table from her plate. As for the food, I would go as far to say it was the best fish and chips I’ve ever eaten. The cod was beautifully cooked, succulent and flaky, in delicious light and crispy batter. The chips were spot on too, fluffy inside and fabulously crisp and golden on the outside. The rest of the table had sausage (one not battered) and chips and all thoroughly enjoyed their meal too. We were offered dessert but had no room, the meal portions were good and left us comfortably full and satisfied. We are planning on travelling from Brighton to Hastings just to come here for my dads birthday in may as fish and chips are his favourite! Thanks for having us :)

We went looking throught Hastings for fish & chips in East Street and Rock-a-Nore Road and none of the chippies appealed to me so I did a quick search for restaurants. I saw Maggie and thought we have a look. It was buzzing when we arrived at it was after 2pm and looking at the portions, I took as a good sign. I ordered the cod & chips with the garden peas. Wow! The chips were perfect and on a different level! The taste, size and texture was something to savour. The cod was massive and did not taste like any cod I had before and I can honestly say this is the best fish & chips I've ever tried in my life! My friends whole heartily agreed. I followed up with the retro knickerbocker glory which hit the spot. I had a view of the boats and sea so it's a lovely spot. I'll definitely return when I'm next DFL.

We ordered two haddock and chips and one catch of the day which was plaice. Miscommunication by the staff and they cooked three haddocks by mistake. They straightaway apologised and offered to change it back and the chef even came out to apologise. I love haddock anyway so was happy to keep it, but the way they dealt with it was spot on. They provided one of the haddocks with gluten free batter too. Had to try my friends and it was really delicious..much crispier than usual batter. Cant recommend this place enough.

A fisherman style restaurant. Let's say you are in Britain, în Hastings, and you want to satisfy your gourmet pleasures and eating something traditional. I always do that when I am visiting a foreign country. So you want your curiosity to be satisfied. What is the most traditional plate in a restaurant located in a fisherman town? Fish and chips, of course. You have the possibility to serve fish and chips in almost all restaurants in Hastings but let's say you are more pretentious. You want the fish to be fresh, just captured - in fact you want "the catch of the day - and you want to be sure that you are not served with refrigerated fish and... you want to see with your own eyes the process of kooking. There are a lot of conditions and if you want all of them to be fulfilled, people might say about you that you are not hungry, you just want to be carping. AAAND... you want to serve the meal in an old building of a fisherman house. Now, this is a challenge. Believe it or not there is such a restaurant that can fulfil all your pretentious requests and you can find it in Hastings, under the name of "Maggie's fish & chips". And guess what? It is in the same building with fishmarket, at the first floor (second floor for the yankees). Before you decide to go there, to serve a plate of fish and chips, you should know that this is a small restaurant with open kitchen - you can see how your meal is prepared - and as an inconvenient for you, is that you can smell everything is kooking in the kitchen of the restaurant. The restaurant is in an old fisherman house, at the first floor (second floor for USA citizens), it has about 8 or 9 tables inside, approximately 30 seats and there is a very narrow balcony with 4 tables for 2 persons each. The food is DELICIOUS, the taste of fish is that what suppose to be, the portions are big enough and the prices are reasonable. I recommend you to order a fish from the chapter "catch of the day". Good appetite!

I really love coming to Hastings for fish and chips when visiting the south coast, and remember Maggies as one of the greatest places to sample a Great British delicacy. The restaurant has changed somewhat,in recent years, and getting a drinks licence is certainly a step forward. The service from the two ladies was very warm and friendly, and there was a good selection of specials available. The restaurant was clean and all of the staff were cheerful. I ordered Haddock and chips and a couple of Helles beers. The beer was ice cold, but the glass was hot out of the glasswasher. The Haddock had a slightly strong flavour, while not unpleasant. The batter was deliciously light and crispy, but, I personally would have skinned the fish, and perhaps seasoned the flour/batter. The chips were out of a bag, unfortunately, and again, while perfectly acceptable, in fact, quite nice, are not appropriate in a high-turnover seaside F&C establishment formerly visited by Messrs. Stein and Pantsdown, and recently vaunted by little Major P-B. Come on guys, real seaside chips please!

I've definitely had better chips in Hastings. And £3.80 for a 330ml can of apple juice?! I realise it's locally produced and is good quality, but it retails on it's own website for aI little over £1 per can. That's a hell of a mark up.... 3 cans of juice massively increased the price of a takeaway, and meant the while thing didn't feel worth it. I don't think my review will make a difference, people will still come here. Maybe they benefit from not having much good competition. Probably worth it to sit in. Not for takeaway.

One of the best chippy teas I've ever had. Went with a large group of friends and they managed to find us a table of 14 later in the evening. Staff were friendly and fast, food was exceptional and portions generous. Atmosphere was relaxed, unpretentious and comfortable. Food was satisfying yet light and didn't leave us feeling bloated and heavy like most chippies do. Would definitely recommend and go again.

Disappointed with our experience based on the reviews others had given. The chips were good but my partner said the fish smelt and tasted off. He couldn’t eat it! When he told them and said he’d only like to pay for the chips because that’s all that were eaten they said no. £17 for terrible fish!

Order fish and chips (haddock) and it came out looking lovely. 1 bite into the fish and I knew something wasn’t right - the fish was soggy and smelt off. I showed the chef and he said “no it’s fresh”. I’ve had a lot of fish in my time and know what fresh fish is meant to be.

This is not the first time we've been to Maggie's and as usual the food was delicious, cod and chips with mushy peas. Our grandson had sausage chips and beans followed by chocolate ice cream he ate the lot, will definitely go again (very soon)

Surely best Fish'n Chips place in Hastings if not in the South Coast. Great location off the centre, beyond the cliffs, next to old fishing sheds. Excellent service spiced with free glass of rum.

I've been going to Maggies for 20 years. It's the best Fish and Chips restaurant in Hastings. The food is delicious, generous portions and friendly staff especially Julie. I always take my visitors there. You do need to book as it's very popular!

Simply the best Fish and Chips I've ever had! Lovely atmosphere and caring staff who was regularly checking that everything was Ok. I took the cod, my friend a catch of the day - monkfish - both were delicious and XXL. The house sauce was very good too. Would definitely go back!

I am a very frequent visitor to Hastings and have long been aware of the reputation Maggie's enjoys. We were excited to get a chance to dine at the restaurant and put it's reputation to the test. Sadly, Maggie's fell short in just about every department, although, admittedly the portions were generous, including a tasty and large piece of haddock. The most disappointing part of the meal was the chips, which we strongly suspected were frozen. We have had many meals from The Dolphin, a few minutes walk away, which we feel ticks all the classic fish and chips boxes. Maggie's I'm afraid is dining out on its reputation. Fingers crossed things improve.

What a total disappointment after raving reviews from Tom Parker Bowles article in paper last week. Has he actually eaten there! The service was slow. Waited 10mins for a cup of tea. The chips were aweful. They seemed like oven chips deep fried. Way too oily and crispy. The fish wasn't much better. Actually where was the fish, couldn't find it? The mushy peas had too much liquid (tinned?). Give me old fashioned fish and chips. This was nothing like the real thing and for £15 each a rip off.

Excellent spot for lunch in a wonderfully diverse and interesting park. Even though the cafe was pretty busy on Easter Monday the staff were friendly, accommodating and efficient and the food very well prepared, tasty and reasonably priced.

nice area, big space, plenty of seating, welcoming. broken toilet facilities, could do with a make over. the chicken pie was horrible. the chops were well cooked but tasted a little tangy. the burger was ok, average basic meat. the fish was nice with good batter. the sausage was very pale, it wasnt good quality. sadly we wouldnt return

I had a medium pie of cod tonight take away, not only small, I've seen bigger fish fingers. It was the worst cider I've eaten, to me it was re-fried and wasn't cod and £8.90 for a total rip off
