We took advantage of their August offer for Afternoon Tea, it was a splendid tea but marred a little by the manager who tried to overcharge us by over £20.00. This was despite having been presented with an itemised printed bill from the hotel, which clearly stated the correct outstanding price to pay. All was eventually sorted out, but it was rather embarrassing as there were other diners in the vicinity.

On Monday 29 th April I came to your hotel for my Mums special birthday treat I had emailed ahead to request no egg sandwiches and when the waiter came to the table and asked if it was for all of us I confirmed with him that was the case. A different waiter then brought the afternoon tea and 2 plates of sandwiches one of which had egg sandwiches on it . Not wanting to make a fuss I then ate only a couple of sandwiches so my sister and Mum could have the rest, The cakes looked pretty but were dry and tasteless and Mum having tried one refused to eat anymore - the scones were served warm and the best thing we ate. Our original waiter came to the table and saw the egg sandwiches left on the plate and said he was sorry it was the chefs fault and I hadn’t made my request clear in my email or with him. We had finished the tea and he offered to bring more sandwiches but it was by then too late! I asked for the bill and could hear him loudly discussing our table with his colleagues whether he should do something in lieu of the egg sandwich mistake. When I went to pay there was nothing taken off the bill 10% service added and no apology - I then queried it and the waiter starting arguing with me and saying it was my fault. I refused to pay for service and left apologising to my Mum for choosing your establishment. I am a chef in London and had only chosen your hotel as my sister had recommended it She had been for tea at a weekend and had a wonderful experience and was raving about it. Sadly my Mums 90 th Birthday tea cant be repeated and I feel very let down by your hotel and staff

The hotel grounds are extensive and its a lovely setting to have a drink or too at the end of a day, especially if the sun is shining. The table and chairs have recently been replaced so the seating is comfortable and stylish. Due to the large garden area, there are some garden games e.g. chess, Frisbee etc that can be played too which is a nice touch.

We came here for afternoon tea for a friends birthday. We sat outside in the lovely grounds as the weather was great, however the service here was awful. After taking our drink orders, it took 30 minutes to get these, when we then ordered re-fills this took an hour!! The waitress explained that she didn’t know how to make iced coffee so would have to get someone else to make them, didn’t realise it would take an hour for this though! It then took another 30 minutes to get our final 3rd drink! We would have understood if the hotel was busy or if we were a big group but there were plenty of empty tables and there were just 3 of us so I wouldn’t want to be there when they are fully booked! The food was lovely but I would not rush back here or recommend this place due to the extremely poor service.

We were a bit indecisive between eating in the hotel and eating out, because we were very tired for going out but unsure when we read the reviews. What a good surprise! The food was very good, the pork belly ordered by my husband was succulent and my risotto was fantastic. Very good options of beer/wines. Amazing service, in particular Mel, who is very pleasant /informative/jolly/best waitress in long time and made our experience even more enjoyable.

We booked afternoon tea as a birthday surprise. I had to phone the Hotel to change the booking to add an extra person and they were very accommodating. We were shown into the bar lounge and shown to our seats beside a beautiful roaring fire. Although service was a little slow at times as they were unexpectedly short of staff due to sickness( its a lurgy time of year) . The staff were lovely and so helpful. One of the party asked for sandwiches with no butter and this request was granted with no problem. There were a good selection of teas and coffee and the waitress wasn't phased by 4 different tea requests. The table was set out with polished cutlery and clean linen. My only minor criticism is that it would have been nice to have had pretty china however the white china was acceptable. A lovely selection of sandwiches and pastries - the mince pie was a little festive treat. When we requested more clotted cream for the huge warm scones , we were brought enough to feed an army. Tea top ups requests were brought swiftly to the table. As an extra we had brought a birthday cake and this was given to the staff at a convenient point. The plated it and lit the candle and brought it to the table and sang happy birthday. At no point were we asked to leave even though we were there for more than 2 hours. The staff were so lovely. The ambience just perfect for a grey December day . We were told at the beginning that what we couldn't manage to eat we would be given a box to take away and this was delivered to the table with our bill. Overall we couldn't fault it . I have seen negative reviews else where but the four of us agreed that it was a lovely afternoon and that we would all return , a huge compliment from us fussy foodies who have vast experience of afternoon teas between us.

This is one of the nicest hotel bars I have been in. It's located in the drawing room of the 17th century hotel with windows overlooking the substantial gardens. There are cosy sofas and wing-backed chairs inside with a patio outside. We only had pre-dinner drinks in here but they were serving afternoon tea which looked delicious. My only criticism is that they charge you for a bowl of bar snacks, fine if you are in a pub but not at a top hotel.

I will firstly start by saying I am reviewing this on behalf of my wife. While there is absolutely no issue with the lovely surroundings of the Royal Berks Hotel, if you are either Gluten or Dairy Intolerant it may not be the place to enjoy afternoon tea. Ringing ahead over 2 weeks in advance, I asked the team at the Royal Berks, that as I would be attending a 'Special Occasion' afternoon tea, if they were able to accommodate food intolerances. (I have an intolerance to Diary and Gluten. While not life threatening, eating products with Dairy or Gluten makes me very uncomfortable). I was informed that I could be accommodated and I eagerly awaited the event. Unfortunately the food I received at the event was, to say the least, below par. For the £16 cost I received: A pot of Darjeeling (no milk alternative), 3 small finger sandwiches, (Ham, Smoked Salmon & Cucumber, Cucumber & Cream Cheese). For the sweet options. 1 mince pie, 1 Iced mince pie (both of which were clearly shop bought as they arrived in small foil tins, like those you can buy from an exceedingly good baker), and a small piece of Christmas cake, (I assume left over from Christmas). While I did very much enjoy my evening, I cannot say the same for my food. Unfortunately it appears that those of us with food intolerances, are still very difficult to accommodate.

We visited the Royal Berkshire Hotel for afternoon tea a couple of weeks ago. My parents organised this as a surprise for me to celebrate my engagement. They had gone to the trouble of visiting the hotel the previous week to have a look around. On this visit they received a warm welcome from reception and were impressed with the facilities. When we came for afternoon tea we were extremely disappointed with the service and personnel. Staff were dismissive and quite abrupt at times, almost as if we were an inconvenience being there. We had to physically go up to the bar on more than one occasion to request more tea/coffee, water and sandwiches. That being said, the girl that actually brought out the food was friendly and helpful. Once we had finished the afternoon tea our plates and cups were not cleared away so we ended up moving to another clear table. It was disappointing that my parents had made such an effort to pick the right hotel to celebrate this occasion but ended up slightly embarrassed about their choice. I submitted my comments to the hotel a couple of days after the visit and did not get any response. We are local to the area and unfortunately will not be recommending the hotel to our friends and family.

On this occasion we took my wife's parents to visit the Royal Berkshire hotel's lounge bar for a late lunch/ early afternoon tea, as two of our group choose the traditional afternoon tea and the other two choose a steak panini served with genga chips and side salad. We all decided to be tea total today so we all choose one of the selections of tea to accompany our food, glorious views of the garden whilst we sat leisurely eating our selected dishes. Service was very good as was the food, the two of us men even managed to eat some of the freshly made cakes that the ladies could not finish. There were even a few left over that were willingly boxed up to take home. After finishing our food we had a stroll around the gardens before taking the parents back home.A very pleasant afternoon.

Booked afternoon tea here as a birthday treat for a friend and wasn't disappointed. Lovely country house hotel with a slightly faded ambience which was perfect for tea. We were seated in big wing chairs in the bay window overlooking the quiet beautiful grounds and stayed there for nearly five hours! The food was lovely and fresh (exceptionally light scones) and we could have as many tea refills as we could drink. Very good value for £16.95 each. The staff were excellent - discreet and friendly. We were lucky with the weather and went for a stroll afterwards in the grounds to let the food go down. We never felt rushed although we ended up being the last ones in the room. Will definitely be back.

We spent two nights in the Royal Berkshire hotel and each day spent time in their Polo Lounge and bar. We found the lounge to be relaxing and comfortable with wonderful views out into their garden. We were there in March just when all the daffodils had bloomed and the garden was bright and cheerful. We used the lounge for late morning teas and mid afternoon drinks as well as a lunch on the day of our departure and we found the service to be friendly and professional and the food and drink to be top class.

Took my elderly parents for lunch as it was my birthday. My parents are both infirm & I have to bring them in separately. No-one in the lounge bar offered assistance or took us to a table. We sat at a table by the window and were ignored by the waiter for 10-15 minutes. He was more interested in serving the group having afternoon tea & clearing off the dirty tables than acknowledging us. I eventually had to go to the bar to ask for menus. We ordered drinks & when they eventually came his serving manor was very amateurish - knowing how to place drinks on a table is pretty basic! The waiter even queried that I ordered champagne & asked did I mean Prosecco (how insulting to a customer!) I had also ordered water which he forgot & when it eventually came he just randomly placed 3 glasses & a jug of water on the table without pouring the water into the glasses. He was clueless about the cutlery & it took him 2 attempts to bring the correct cutlery. The food eventually arrived half an hour after ordering it & we were asked if we would like sauces - these didn't arrive until we were half way through our food. I suggested to the waitress who eventually brought them that it would be a good idea to plan in advance & bring sauces with the food. She didn't seem interested. The food was good; steaks tender & cooked as ordered, burger very tasty & in a fresh brioche bun with plenty of fresh lettuce & tomato. No-one came to ask if we would like more drinks/how was the food etc. After dessert & coffee I again had to go looking for someone to ask for the bill - found the waiter hanging around the reception area chatting to the receptionist/other staffThe ambience in the Lounge Bar is welcoming but the staff are not.Suggest more training in customer service & basic serving technics for the staff who, I suspect, are part-time, untrained, students being paid minimal hourly rates. Not their fault - bad management! The Lounge Bar was not busy - I counted 15 covers, including, us at the busiest time. I see from other reviews that the afternoon tea is highly rated - from what I witnessed it looked good & guests receive a much better level of service if you order afternoon tea!

We visited this hotel on a Design Restaurants deal for afternoon tea. On arrival the hotel receptionist was welcoming and pleasant;showing us to a small table in the lounge/bar overlooking the gardens. The waiter who served us was polite and brought us our selection of sandwiches, scones and pastries promptly. Once he'd given us our food and drinks he left us to it and only returned once to see that all was well. We wanted more sandwiches and coffee but by the time he came back to us we had been evacuated because of a fire bell and come back in and had finished our food! The food itself was good but there could have been more than 3 small finger sandwiches each. The hotel didn't match up to Pennyhill Park, another hotel in the group, for either food, ambience or service.

I booked the Cream Tea for myself, my fiance, and his parents. When we arrived at 12noon I told the lady at reception we had a booking at 12noon but she couldn't find my name on the list. She didn't say anything else about it just asked us where we wanted to sit. She then comes back and asks if English Breakfast Tea is ok for everyone, we don't get to see a menu or anything. The tea is served and then we don't see anyone for a little while, then they come back with sandwiches and pastries etc and I have to tell them I actually booked the Cream Tea - just scones. And she says "oh we didn't have you down on the list for today, you were booked in yesterday". The booking was supposed to have been changed from Saturday to Sunday at 12, I received an email confirmation for that, but either way we were never asked what we booked exactly and they just assumed it was the full Afternoon Tea.The hotel and gardens were lovely, and so was the tea and scones, but I was expecting much better service from a place like that.

8 of us stayed at this hotel and decided against the restaurant simply to allow the children to have fun in the grounds. We were not disappointed with the bar food at all - it was hot and fresh and really tasty. The children all settled for beans on toast and enjoyed every mouthful. More kids meals would be a definite hit - especially being so close to Legoland and other family parks. Breakfast was equally as delicious as dinner - I cannot complain about a single thing. My personal preference is for a pot of tea with breakfast, but the staff provided non-stop top-ups from a flask.

I went to the Royal Berkhire Hotel as part of a group of nine people on Christmas Day. The room we ate in was lovely with beautiful views out onto the garden. We had a buffet style lunch - so you could effectively eat as much as you liked and could have exactly what you fancied. There was a large choice of starters. The main courses included a carvery of three meats and you were given generous portions - my husband was given plenty of turkey - he couldn't eat it all! And there was a good selection of desserts. Staff were very courteous - taking your coats on arrival and virtually taking you to the ladies when you asked where it was! Nothing was too much for the staff to deal with - they happily got extra gravy from the kitchen, and always called you sir or madam. There was a visit from Father Christmas with some presents for all the children. I would certainly re-visit this hotel for another meal.

The setting for this hotel is lovely so it was disappointing that the afternoon tea experience did not meet expectations. The sandwich fillings were mediocre (included cheese and pickle). The scones were the best cakes on the the stand. The cakes and gateaux were very bland and dense rather than light and tasty. Some of the grounds had areas of discarded cigarette ends which could have been from workmen. This hotel has recently changed hands and is now run by Exclusive Hotels so hopefully these are just teething problems.

The main meals were ok but slightly disappointing was the sirloin steak - as one of the more expensive menu items I was expecting more! Overall not bad but can't help thinking it relies on the hotel's four star status to inflate restaurant prices.
