A great local pub. Reasonable prices and friendly staff. Nice and central in York. Good old-fashioned building. Always has a good atmosphere. A good selection of beers.

Excellent selection of beers on both draft and in bottle. Managed to taste a few, will definitely return to try some more beers.

Quirky. Fun. Great atmosphere. Amazing staff. What else could you possibly ask for, me and my wife popped in on a Thursday night when it was was relatively quiet, however the bar maid who had bright coloured hair kept spirits up she was chatty, funny and recommended some lovely beers/cocktails. The building is stunning and bigger than you would imagine, definitely will be back on a busier day to experience the pub in all its glory. 10/10

I visited this fantastic old town York real ale and continental ale micro pub on Wednesday 16th March 2022 Bloody fantastic place good Handpumped cider and perry and real aleon like going back 100 years plus in time great easy going atmosphere pleasent staff and a nice morzake floor as well Wednesday 10th July 2024 Again, I came to this really great real ale pub in the historical Shambles area of York. This naturally old historical pub in York has 3 gloorels to the pub. This pub today was well staffed, and the ample amount of real ales on were all well kept in tip top order The punk styled background music was right up my street. This is pub real ale drinkers when in York must come to for a pint

Great atmosphere. Friendly staff. Good range of beers—not the best but there you go. Nice scotch. But I think it’s all about the cost downstairs

Cracking little boozer, loads of fresh and quirky beer to choose from, friendly staff, and a warm atmosphere. Even the security was helpful, making room for me seven friends when others turned us away for being in a group.

We love this pub and always visit when in York, which is 10-12 times each year. I can't find an email address, which is why I have resorted to Trip Advisor. My wife, a knowledgeable enthusiast for dark beers, ordered a half pint of Bristol Beer Factory Milk Stout recently. She said it was a little vinegary, and I agreed. When she took it back to the bar and told the young barman this, he took it upon himself to sample it and then told her that this was how it was meant to taste. We know this beer well, and it was NOT how it is meant to taste. The pub was busy and it was only half a pint, so we didn't make a fuss (which would have been embarrassing for everyone). But the barman made no offer of any kind. This is very disappointing indeed for an establishment which prides itself on quality.

On the pricier side but great drink selection and great atmosphere

7 of us (Between the ages of 56 and 65) 'tried' to enter, early Sat evening. We had previously been asked to leave the pub opposite 'Valhalla' because there weren't any seats, and we did without issue. However the Doorman at the Valhalla had, for some unexplained reason, contacted the door staff at the Pivni to refuse us entry! With a total lack of any communication and having done nothing at all to warrant this treatment, I find the behaviour of these 'security' staff to be totally unprofessional and needless. I can't recommend visiting this particular area of town. The rest of York was far more welcoming.

Great beer selection, in a very old building. Just be aware that as far as I could see, the only toilets are on the 2nd floor, and that the stairs to the first and second floors (where most of the seating is, but which don't have bars, so you have to carry your beer up) are quite steep.

Tried somewhere new, no interaction from staff, just went through the motions to take the order. Tried to crack a joke with her, shouldnt have bothered. No atmosphere. Didn't even thank us for taking the empty glasses baxkWont be going back.

Always swerve by here on a visit to York. Great selection of beers. Never realised how big it was upstairs. Dog friendly. Recommended.

I remember first coming here just after it opened. Had to laugh when a guy just asked if it was one of the oldest pubs in York. I'm old but not hundreds of years old. The building however is impressive and stretches over three floors. Boothroyd and Madge sat with me downstairs while the boss went M & S shopping. A lovely timber framed building. Three real ales plus a couple of real ciders. Had a bitter from Bristol Beer Factory. Excellent. Find it just off the market. Toilets upstairs. Awful Rap music on this visit..I wonder why they removed the big C before the RAP music. Go figure says Booth, especially as I am not even nearly the oldest git in here today.

Good selection of "proper beers" so don't bother if you're a Carling Black label or other tasteless lager drinker! Also good selection of Belgium strong beers. Lovely people behind the bar. I'm going again next time in York. No food as far as I'm aware.

Nice selection of unusual beers both local and international. Only went into the small bar on the street level but I know has upstairs too. Has a nice avant-garde vibe to it. Visited on 2 days both in the afternoon for a drink and a breather from the crowds.

Nice little bar right next to the market in York, its set over 3 floors. Good little individual areas to meet friends. Though it was cold, I had to keep my coat on and it still felt chilly. We only stopped for a drink, which was averagely price for York.

Came here for some Bernard beer. Unfortunately they did not have that on tap, so that was a bit disappointing. That said, it's a very nice and cozy place with plenty of other beers to choose.

Excellent choice of beer. Over 3 floors and the atmosphere is always lovely. If we are in town, we will always call in here for one. Sometimes more lol!

It’s not a place to get your groove on, more of a sit round with your mates catching up before something more exciting happens but if catch ups is what you want then this is the place. Nice little stations for 2/4&6 or sit up in the rafters in quirky, dark corner. If you like a sweeter treat, sample the pineapple cider Enjoy!

Very cosy pub with low ceilings and nice warm lighting, the drinks choices provide both safe and more adventurous options. The bar staff when we visited were very kind and polite, defo recommended if you're passing this area.

Small pub but packed across 3 different floors so if you can't find a space on one, keep going up the stairs. Staff were really good at giving different options on a busy day. The stairs are very tight, so one way only sometimes but it's nice and cosy once you find a seat and sit back to enjoy. Have a great selection of different beers but also ciders. Would love to try further different drinks to recommend more. A brilliant little pub to go to!

what really annoyed me was the fact the place has a really low indistingishable background music playing ...so i loaded up the jukebox expecting it to burst into life..but it just took my money and did absolutely nothing. the place had no vibe no atmosphere..disappointing.

Been here before, nice place for a beer. Like the window seats by the bar. They sell Veltins pilsner, my favourite beer, and it's very good too. We paid £5.50 for a pint so I would not say that is too unreasonable. We got well robbed in the Duke of York by the Shambles, almost £1.50 more per pint (so avoid that place) Will always come back here when visiting York

Popped in to get out of the rain and was greeted by a quite classic looking pub with a very traditional atmosphere. Had a pint of Mittel which is apparently their companies’ own beer. Either way it was a cracking pint and better going somewhere and not having to drink Carling. Highly recommend coming here!

This is a must for anyone visiting York. The drink selection is one of the best in York The staff are excellent and have great knowledge of the beers.

Gorgeous old pub with nice selection of drinks and amazing staff who were so friendly and bonus points for being for not only being dog friendly but also making the point of coming to see the dog and give him attention which not only he appreciated but we did also.

Came here whilst in York, it’s so overpriced for a pint it’s not even funny, £6 a pint for a standard ale! valhalla opposite is a much nicer pub, friendlier and £4.50 a pint. No wonder it was dead when Valhalla was rammed !!!

We always visit this cosy bar when in York to try some of the different craft beers and ciders. We tried the Mittel pilsner, pineapple cider, vanilla weisse and Kasteel cherry beers. We were even allowed to sample some of the beers before we bought them. Friendly staff and great location. We’ll be back again.

I come here frequently enough for work drinks, as it's our favourite place to come into town. It feels like a hidden gem, with it's quirky build and décor, and range of drinks. The music is always playing roulette on what genre it's going to play and my friends and I love it (though we got Rick Rolled twice in one night which was chaotic brilliance). The staff are always really lovely and happy to have a bit of banter with everyone. There are games you can play, though the jukebox is my favourite feature as we love to make the music even more unhinged in its twists and turns in genres sometimes. The only complaint I could possibly have is that the Lilly's Mango Cider isn't always on tap- it's clearly the best flavour of still cider.

Good selection of speciality beers, and gin etc if beer isn’t your thing! Friendly staff and cosy upstairs seating.

Came in on Sunday the 30th, the staff members Bob and Bradley were incredibly nice and cheerful considering how busy it was, they had queued some great music my husband was singing along to :) brilliant selection of gin! 10/10 would recommend to everyone

This was a stop on our first night in York. We had to come here to try the great beer and were not disappointed! Very friendly bar man who allowed us to sample some beers before we bought. It was quiet but not too quiet for a Tuesday. Had some great beers, and a comfy place to sit upstairs. What more could you ask for?

Lovely bar, great music and atmosphere, and Bradley was very knowledgeable and friendly! We were greeted by Bradley who I was so impressed with I had to get his name! So friendly, welcoming and he knew his stuff! It's people like Bradley that makes you want to go back to a bar again! He's obviously passionate about beer and cider!

We visited on a Wednesday evening and it seemed quite dead / not much atmosphere. - maybe we just picked the wrong night. Beer selection was also surprisingly limited for my husband who likes to try different bitters - he didn't fancy the passion fruit beer which my friend was drinking. However, the building was lovely and quirky with extra seating upstairs.

Me and my husband went in here last night to find only two members of staff working on a busy Saturday!! It took ages for us to be served by a stressed out bartender (short haired man with tattoos) because the other member of staff stood at the other end of the bar on her phone!! (Woman with dark hair and tattoos) it’s awful to see paying customers waiting 20+ minutes for a beer because a staff member would rather be on her phone than working!! the male bartender on shift looked extremely upset and stressed!! What a shame it was because it is a lovely bar with such character, I will not be coming back!!

Totally enjoyed our weekend and mango cider and pineapple cider, for me. More porters for hubby. Lovely people excellent environment and nothing is too much. Highly recommended x

Taking a step back in time for a pint. Feels just like it would to walk into an old pub hundreds of years ago and ask for a pint. Good but not great cask selection and a few ciders as well. Staff are top notch.

Popped in for drinks as was staying in York for the night. My son had recommended this pub as said it was great. Loved the sloped floors and beams and how old the pub was. Loads of different beers to choose from. Friendly staff.
