Forage York in York

Went here for Sunday lunch on Mother’s Day. The roast lamb was incredible, as were the roasties and massive Yorkshire pudding! Place has a really nice atmosphere, staff were attentive and polite. 10/10 thanks!

I really wanted to like the food here because the staff was so friendly and attentive but we were very underwhelmed by it…especially for the price. Also, we were not told they didn’t have their focaccia — it’s the base of about 4 dishes— until we ordered the humous. We were told there wasn’t a replacement bread, so we would be ordering a dish of humous with nothing to dip in it. For a Friday night (at 6:30 PM) we thought this was very strange. The halloumi was the best thing we had (but it’s difficult to mess up cheese), the sticky Asian breading tasted nice but the chicken was raw on the inside of it. The scallops were bitter. The pidgin was average, but it came with a nice Stilton “beignet” — but FYI that was not a beignet, it was a little fritter or tiny croquette. The prawns were very hard to get the shell off of and were messy for not enough of a taste reward (and no finger bowl given for the mess). The Baked Alaska was more ginger than rhubarb (and not indicated on the menu) also sickly sweet. Sorry, Forage, we didn’t enjoy our meal and would not recommend.

Absolutely wonderful! The best meal out I have had in a very long time. A little pricey but well wortg it. Beautifully fresh, seasonal and original tasting dishes with great service and a lovely relaxed atmosphere. Not only the food,but the cocktails were delicious too! We will definitely be returning next time we are in York.

Really lovely setting and amazing food. Not sure why the place is not buzzing with people. It was quiet on a Friday night. Nevertheless, this didn't spoil our dinner. We had attentive service, delish food and refreshing drinks. All in all a great experience

Forage Kitchen & Bar is, in my opinion, the best spot for a mate-date in all of York. They use locally-sourced and foraged ingredients to make little sharing dishes. Because of this, their menu is not only seasonal but also changes every month. Chef, Kieran Duffy, uses this British fare to make lovely Mediterranean barbecue dishes. And I, personally, cannot get enough of them. Although, heart-breakingly, Forage shut its doors and announced closure last year. But never fear, Tokyo Industries stepped in and saved this modern institution of York! The nature of Forage makes it almost impossible to recommend anything. But there are three items on the menu that make a regular appearance. They are: 1) Coffee Rubbed Pork Belly - It's so good that it actually feels a bit illegal. 2) Oyster Mushroom Skewers - They bloody love their mushrooms at Forage! 3) Pan-Fried Scallops in Curry Sauce - This dish might have ruined food for me. For the best experience, I would recommend heading there after work with three others. I'd say two-to-three dishes each is good. And you should definitely go to the speakeasy. Not only are their dishes completely unique, but their cocktails are as well. So, next time you need somewhere to eat in York, go to Forage. And thank me later.

The place is so nicely done. Nice and spaced out tables, not too cramped at all. Cocktails were lovely. When you sit down they tell you the food is “tapas style” and that it comes “as and when”The food was absolutely delicious. So flavoursome. However, we had large plates from the grill arriving before our snacks had even arrived. We had sides arriving well before the steak and cutlets. Completely disjointed food service, it was flown out of the kitchen so quickly we physically didn’t have enough space on the table. I had to ask them to hold back a few plates. I know what tapas is and how it’s served, like many people, I’ve also been to Spain. In this instance I feel “tapas” was used as an excuse for poor kitchen leadership and cohesion between waiting staff and chefs. It did feel quite overwhelming, which is a shame as the food was so nice.

Had a great Sunday roast and a cocktail here. Food was fantastic, quality was on par with more expensive restaurants in the city and cocktails won’t be beaten. Will be back!

The restaurant looks nice inside but the food was mostly disappointing, I only enjoyed one dish - the flavours didn’t go together in most of the dishes we ordered and the service was pretty slow, I wouldn’t go back. It’s a real shame that this was meant to a special meal out for us and it was really quite poor, ended up getting a takeaway pizza shortly after!

We came to the restaurant to bring my girlfriends family out for a meal. We arrived early and were accommodated for with no issue, we ordered our foods and drinks which were all great. One of our groups steaks was not cooked as much as they would like (subjective) and everyone else was happy with theirs, the manager quickly apologised, got it refired and even went as far as removing the steak and vegetables off the bill as an apology which of course, we did not expect. The food, atmosphere and customer service here is second to none. It has recently had a new manager and you can really tell the difference.

So many great choices to eat in York and here is another great place to eat . Excellent place

I came here for my birthday with my partner and had an amazing time. The food was brilliant, the drinks were all fabulous (we had many) and had a lovely waiter looking after us. I'll be coming back and would recommend the restaurant to anyone 🥰

Starting with the good stuff – the dishes were all fantastic. Each plate was a burst of flavor, though I have to admit they come with a price tag on the steeper side. The cocktails, though, were a real treat – top-notch and definitely the highlight of the evening. The ambiance and decor were clearly well-thought-out, adding a nice touch to the overall vibe. However, things took a turn during another visit when, despite the ample space at the bar when you first walk in, we were surprisingly turned away from grabbing a drink there. It felt a bit off, given the seemingly inviting bar area. In a nutshell, while the restaurant nailed it in terms of food, cocktails, and atmosphere, the mixed experience – especially the unexpected denial at the bar – left us with slightly mixed feelings. It's a spot worth considering for the culinary delights, but be ready for a few twists in the service.

If I was on death row in America this would be where I get my last meal from. Just out of this world!!!!! The cucumber margarita, cod in Thai Green Curry, smoked pumpkin, charred pardon peppers, coffee rubbed pork belly bao bun!!!! I think I may have had my first food orgasm! Out of this world. Where have you been all my life???? Service could not have been better. So helpful and had all the answers to my question. What team, what a place and hats off to the kitchen staff. Amazing

Me and my husband go out every year for Christmas usually Christmas Eve but went on 23rd instead of we chose forage as it looks so pretty. Unfortunately we were underwhelmed. No atmosphere, and disappointed with food. Service was slow even though there were only a few tables in. Not the Christmas celebration we were hoping for. Don’t think we will return.

We spent NYE at Forage with our friends . The cocktails and food are to die for , every dish is do well thought out and delicious. The staff were attentive and friendly . It was a great evening and I would recommend Forage to anyone looking for dishes with a unique twist. We will definitely eat here when we are next in York.

Let's start with the big positive; the food was good and enjoyed by all my family. The wine list was fine too, with some nice ones by the glass, as well as whole bottles. But there were a few small niggles, and one big one! Start small, the food was served on barely tepid plates, which cooled the food down very quickly. I was offered no option on how my steak was cooked; it came rare, which luckily is just how I like it, but it's a good job I'm not a member of the "can't stand the sight of blood" brigade. Despite there not being many people in, service in parts was slow (although all the servers were delightful), and I had to order a second glass of wine twice before it finally arrived. Now for the biggie; my younger daughter has a serious sesame allergy and therefore accuracy on the ingredients list is absolutely essential. It was simply mildly amusing when a chardonnay on the wine list was described as tasting of berry fruits, the pilot noir description on the opposite page of the wine list having been copied and pasted under the chardonnay heading. But the ingredients list for the chicken sandwich included sesame. When queried, the waitress said this must be a typo, went to the kitchen to double check, and came back and confirmed this. Given that this could be potentially life threatening, this is not good enough, and, along with the silly wine listing error, called into question the accuracy of the ingredients list and the specially produced allergy chart we were given. Naturally, we played safe and gave the chicken sandwich a miss! In conclusion, the food is excellent, warm your plates (or don't leave the food hanging around so long before serving) and speed up parts of the service (it really doesn't take 10 minutes and two requests to pour a glass of wine) and things will be fine. We had a really good time overall. But check the accuracy of your written materials as a matter of urgency!

I’ve now had two lunches and three evening meals at Forage in the past 12 months! Each time the food has been consistently freshly cooked and delicious - taps style. The service is friendly and attentive but not obtrusive. And there’s a lovely Speskeasy bar upstairs!

Our experience was far from satisfactory. Initially, the service seemed promising, but after placing our order, we were practically forgotten. Our dirty plates remained unattended for over 30 minutes, creating an unpleasant dining atmosphere. The lack of available staff exacerbated the situation, as we struggled to get anyone's attention for the bill. As for the food, it fell short of expectations. Despite its presentation, each dish lacked the depth of flavor we anticipated, leaving us underwhelmed. This was particularly disappointing given the restaurant's prices and the plethora of positive reviews that had set our expectations high. Overall, the experience was a letdown, especially considering how much we were looking forward to dining here.

We booked here for a nice meal out and we were a little disappointed. Firstly, the restaurant looked lovely inside. Food wise, most of it tasted great but quite a few of the dishes were cold, such as the chicken and scallops. It would have been much better if they were piping hot. We asked for the steak to be medium rare but it came out very rare... The service was extremely extremely slow even though the restaurant wasn't even a quarter full and we could see there were several staff around. We were tempted to cancel the last few dishes as we had already been there for about 3 hours!

I tried to visit Forage for drinks with a group of nine of us in April this year after seeing the reviews online and knowing it would be perfect for the group I was with but we didn't even get in the door and the attitude and treatment from the door staff was beyond disappointing. I know York is trying to move away from large group visits but our group was calm, polite, well dressed and in no way drunk or even merry at the point at which we visited. We are all professionals and one round of drinks along would have been over £100. We had come straight from dinner and wanted to enjoy some drinks in a great venue. It was early in the night and we could see how quiet it was inside. We spoke to the door staff, who from the outset were stand off-ish (more so than you would usually expect), made a vague attempt to look inside and then told us "we would be more comfortable across the road in Kennedys". I challenged the response politely but the door staff did not offer a response. The entire attitude and aura was off putting and quite honestly, just rude. We went across the road and into Kennedys and left after one drink. Needless to say, I knew it wouldn't be right for us. Before we left the area, I and a few of the group thought we would try and see if the attitude was different for a group of four of us. It was, we were in no different a state save that there was only four of us. We were let in but we promptly turned back around and left after what had happened earlier in the night. It is a shame because I am visiting York again soon with my husband and would have liked to visit but on principle after the attitude I encountered before, I won't be visiting.

Beautiful restaurant, friendly staff and the best sandwiches we have ever had! So different and full of flavour! Highly recommend and can't wait to come back to try the rest!

Firstly, let me start with how beautiful the restaurant looks inside. The food was tasty & obviously a lot of effort goes into the food they produce, such a shame the food was all stone cold, & I mean COLD. This was mentioned to the waitress on requesting the bill, who said she would remove the service charge. Not that we mentioned it for the money but the service wasn’t actually great either. They never even asked if we wanted any salt and pepper, never mind anything else. The restaurant was also VERY cold, two couples sitting in their coats eating Sunday lunch. A real shame after traveling 3 hours to York for a weekend to start with a meal like this. Definitely has potential, but not great right now!

We had a fine Sunday lunch here. The beef and lamb were very tender and flavoursome. Roasties were also really tasty and the veg cooked to perfection. The Yorkshire puddings were huge. Nice spacious room and polite efficient staff. Definitely worth a try.

Spacious restaurant, nice decor. I left messages to book a table on the Tuesday prior to the Saturday but kept going to voicemail and no response to messages left. Finally got through to book on the Wednesday and all good from then on. We were a party of 9 (2 of whom were small children) and had been asked to pre-order at least 12 hours in advance of our visit. We in fact ordered nearly 2 days in advance. We arrived early but still waited over half an hour after our booked time for meals to start arriving. 4 of our meal choices were delicious but I was surprised to learn after we left the restaurant that the 3 people who had the forage salad had received what were possibly plums instead of the charred peaches and no tomatoes. The salad portions were small although did come with a burrata thankfully but for £13 would have at least expected all of the advertised ingredients.

Had many, many good meals in York but this place stands out as one of the best. Brunch menu, and utterly spectacular. Cooked phenomenally, and taste was superb. Seemingly re-opened recently and deserves a visit. A must stop in York.

Really lovely evening having drinks here last weekend! The serving team were very friendly and attentive! We had our first drinks in the ground floor area, before moving to the secret first floor bar when it opened! My first visit to Forage was as part of a larger party at Christmas was great, good and cocktails were amazing. Went back recently on a sort-of date and the food was lovely but not like the delicious Xmas menu I had, and service seemed a bit confused and directionless (although one waitress was especially attentive and good at sorting that out - I wish I could tell you her name). Good food but a bit unpredictable. Would be good to let service staff know what timings are like on certain dishes before people order so they can advise, maybe. Cocktails are really good.

We’d had Forage recommended by a friend who had said the food was amazing but maybe a little expensive and that the atmosphere in the main restaurant and the speakeasy was brilliant. Our visit did not disappoint. The service was truly exceptional, the staff went out of their way to accommodate us in Wild the speakeasy and the cocktails were amazing. Definitely one of the better cocktail bars in York that we have seen so far. Had some really decent cocktails with staff who are clearly knowledgable about their craft and the area. Doesn’t really stand up to bigger cities but was an overall very enjoyable experience and a very good bartender (Alex) really gives this bar an atmosphere that is both enjoyable and relaxing.

Had a wonderful date night with my best friend at Forage on Wednesday and it absolutely exceeded expectations. The restaurant had a brilliant vibe and the unexpected live music was so atmospheric and intimate, not at all obtrusive. We had cocktails (still dreaming about the negroni) and a handful of dishes to share across the menu, with special mentions to the onglette steak and the crab bisque, which may have been one of the nicest dishes I've ever eaten. The panna cotta to finish was an absolute delight of textures, flavours and temperature. Insanely good food, attentive and personal service in a buzzing environment - thank you Forage, can't wait to come back!

Probably one of the best places I will visit. Food incredible but the service is insanely good. All staff clearly work so hard and are so interpersonal. The male host we had was simply the best, the lass bringing out our food was thoughtful and full of knowledge. As a wild forager this place is an asset to the area, and must visit in York. Their cocktails were the best in the area - their bar team clearly know how to make an amazing drink. The prices are insanely cheap for what you get. The drinks/food/service were better than London without the extreme prices. Crab bisque is a must have. They also do a happy hour - for the quality of drinks you get £7 for a cocktail is so worth it. I just wish they had advertised that when we bought them. Would have for sure got more. Can’t rate this place enough, wish they had a branch in London it would do so well.

We came on a quiet night and had a really relaxing time. Staff all very friendly and helpful. Menu included 3 vegan options, which was great considering they recommend 3 plates pp. (I could not finish all of mine.) Food was more inspired than most places. Sauces, garnishes, presentation all top notch. My plates were all fantastic. Husband enjoyed his and mine, esp the oyster mushroom skewer. Steak was requested med rare but came pink (closer to medium) but good flavor. We liked the crunch on top of the halloumi. Tomato carpaccio was a nice lighter note. Food came out in a stream, as expected with tapas. Servers a little too attentive--between steady arrival new plates and stopping by to ask if everything was to our liking it was hard to have a deep conversation. Atmosphere and meal absolutely spot on for date night. Appreciated the commitment to good local ingredients. It is expensive so be prepared.

The atmosphere of this place hits you as soon as you step foot into it. The service is incredibly polite and attentive. The menu is very varied, with lots of different plates to mix and match. Furthermore the drinks menu is vast and well thought out. There isn't specific pairing suggestions for drinks and the food, but there is so much to choose from. We didn't get anything that was below excellent. Our server Carl, (Karl? Not sure on spelling. Sorry!) Was an absolute delight, and really did look after us. Happy to have small discussions with us about the food and drinks, and an absolute delight to talk to. When we were done with our food, he then found us a spot in the upstairs cocktail bar which in itself has a great vibe. If you are fairly open minded about food and drink, and not very picky. You can't really put a foot wrong here, we had a lot of fun here and found a lot of joy in all of our plates and drinks! Thank you for a great experience! Places like this are what make our little trips to York as worthwhile as it always is!

Recommended by Minster employee. She was SPOT on. This was a great lunch. Not cheap but worth it. The food was a wide variety and very high quality. The staff and atmosphere were very nice for a mid-afternoon lunch. Eat here among the hundreds of choices in York, especially by the Minster.

A couple friends and I had a lovely dinner here with extremely friendly, attentive service. We shared around 9 tapas style plates between us as recommended by our waitress which were all delicious and came out in great time. No complaints at all.

I had four dishes. Firstly I had an onion bread with chicken skin butter. This was an okay dish. The bread was nice but I did not fancy the butter too much. Secondly I had a fried chicken with spicy mayo. This was incredible. Not too spicy, a perfect coating and the chicken was sooooooo juicy!! The portion size of this was generous as well. Lastly I had the confit potatoes with goats curd and fried sage. This dish was fabulous. Perfectly cooked potatoes and a very nice curd. The sage I found meaningless. The dessert was a Mille-feuille with had strawberry in some type of jello on the bottom. This had a weird texture. Apart from this the pastry and especially the sorbet were lovely. I swapped the wild strawberry sorbet out for mango sorbet. The sorbet gets a 5/5! The reasons for the four stars instead of five where: - The time that it took for food and drinks to arrive was quite slow. - If a dish is described as a side it should be served on the side of another dish and not as the last dish. It just felt a little strange eating a side dish alone. - A couple of times we felt forgotten. We were to be given new cutlery as well as wanting to order a dessert but were left waiting a couple of times. - One of us had the Bao Bun which was very very spicy which could have been informed on the menu. The staff member mentioned that todays chef was not the one usually making the spicy components and therefore it was spicier than normal.

Amazing food. Great atmosphere and the service was unmatched. We were served by Alex who gave great recommendations and was attentive throughout. Overall a wonderful dining experience!

Food is delicious (hence 2 stars) but the service is horrible. We ordered some plates but they forgot a chicken plate. So we waited another 20 mins. We then ate spicy chicken without veggies because they arrived 30mins before.... We we're then pardoned and told this dish will be taken off our bill. Except a cheaper dish was taken instead. On top of that horrible service, they slam 12.5% of your total bill as service charge. Nobody told us such things, neither this information is written anywhere on the menu. I'm all for giving tips but automatically requiring it means I don't eat at such restaurants.

The food is small plate/ tapas, of a good quality for a fair price, a limited drinks menu, but again average prices, The greeting of customers and explanation of the foods was very good, but after that it went slightly downhill, the plates of food came thick and fast, making the meal feel rushed, ending up with all the plates we ordered on the table at once, but the real problem came when finished eating and no one came to clear the table or to see if we needed anything else or more drinks, in the end had to get up and ask for this to be done. Overall I would go back, hoping that the service problem was just a one off.

£40 odd for sub par cocktails to be fair waiter did say they are re doing the cocktail menu. Wanted to take my partner to the secret bar upstairs and on arival was shown to the bar really? Even when i said to the waitress its ok we will make our own way up she insisted she would show us up totally ruined the "surprise" and then very underwhelming cocktails waste of ££

Really disappointing meal. Food ranged from very good (fried chicken, pork chop) through bland (a plate of green vegetables slapped on a plate with no thought given to flavour or presentation) to unacceptable (a cold ribeye steak which was replaced with a lukewarm chewy ribeye steak). Service was poor and on a quiet Tuesday night we waited an unacceptably long time for drinks and some of our plates. Most of the staff gave the impression that everything was too much trouble. Even with a June 20% off offer this was poor value for money. Skosh does the whole small plates thing immeasurably better and at a similar price point.

Fabulous food, friendly and helpful staff and a great atmosphere. What more could you want. A live band did a slot later on in the evening too. They were also fantastic and even managed to play at a level that didn’t intrude on dinner.
