Very poor customer service and indifferent staff. We ordered two meals and were told there would be a wait (fair enough). One meal arrived with no mention of when second would turn up. After a good few mins I asked one of the wait staff would my omelette arrive soon. I was told “probably “ I did comment that this wasn’t helpful and was told they were very busy. After about another 10 minutes it did turn up. The omelette was cold but the chips were hot. The omelette had to obviously been waiting a good while for the chips. It also had a side salad on the plate although I said I didn’t want it. I didn’t complain but we didn’t stay for cake as we had planned.

When I ordered my lunch there was one piece of cheese & onion quiche left , so I asked for that with chips & salad , so I paid for it , then a member of staff who knew I had ordered it as she was standing there ,had it for her lunch and didn’t even mention it to the member of staff that was dealing with my order. I did have something else , but it is the principle of the matter in hand, I have worked in cafes and you just don’t do that at all, the customer always comes first, this was our first visit as well so not a good experience . I hope they take this into consideration for the future please. Thank you for your reply to my previous review.. you did assume right it wasn’t today as you are closed all day. But your colleague was standing their and she heard that I wanted the quiche that was left , so she should have had something else for her lunch. I wasn’t going to mention this but , then staff were making pancakes and eating them at the counter. Not very professional.

Came for breakfast with my husband, both members of staff were busy talking to a salesman. We waited a few minutes and had a look at the menu whilst we waited, I went to talk to the staff, not one of them came to speak to me. The salesman had already spoke to the owner at the front of the shop, one of the staff could have just said excuse us we won't be a minute, but we were completely ignored. Reply to pillory house: yes I am aware it is not table service, hence why I was stood at the counter for a good while. What I meant by trying to talk to staff, is 2 ladies (staff) were talking to a salesman, I waited patiently at the side for a good while, whilst both the ladies ignored me being stood at the counter. Like I said they could have said excuse us for a minute, or even acknowledged my husband and I were there with a "hello". Not a very welcoming atmosphere at all.

We were enjoying a day in this beautiful town, wandering around & picking up some very nice gifts for birthdays. As we wandered we came across this lovely cafe tucked away in the back of the shop. My husband ordered the steak pie, chips & peas. I chose the quiche, chips & salad. We were both very happy with our delicious meals, & drinks, & the total cost of just over £22. 👌🏼 The staff were friendly & helpful, & the service was spot on. It's a nice, clean, friendly, cafe with good service, tasty food, & it's great value for money. Thank you. We will return.

The management believe they can milk the customer base here but times are a changing , look at the town today , it's nowhere near what it was - be careful - £ 5.20 for a piece of dry coffee and walnut cake is really pushing it - as far as I can see nothing on display is priced up and they rely upon the good manners of it's Nantwich clientele not to complain - the owner is just not interested - he doesn't really deserve the trade he has , disappointing and because of his response we will not visit again - not that he will care I'm sure - He does care ! price now slashed to £ 4.90 - truth is that I have been in the business for over 40 years and £5.20 was too heavy a price , at £ 4.70 , I wouldn't have mentioned it , but there is a line and you crossed it - I by the way am not interested in doing hatchet jobs on small local businesses but looking back on your response to critique it seems that you do not take it well - good luck in all you do going forward - times will only get harder - https://www.tripadvisor.co.uk/ShowUserReviews-g499514-d4312042-r937662385-Pillory_House_Coffee_Shop-Nantwich_Cheshire_England.html#

This is a fabulous coffee shop and friends and helpful staff. We always go here when we stay at the nearby Warner's Alvaston Hall Hotel. The front of the shop has wonderful gifts and paintings for sale, and the café is at the back with plenty of seating. The main meals look fabulous, but we had a tea cake and a scone and both were delicious as was the pot of tea we had. The prices are very reasonable for all food, and you know you are getting quality. We wouldn't go anywhere else in Nantwich. A great place to visit and looking forward to seeing the management and staff again when we next visit. As an aside my wife purchased some earrings in the shop on our way out, again very reasonable.

Bought a German make, combined kettle, tea pot and hot plate from here in February 23 at a cost of £99. The kettle started to leak then the on-off switch failed. Took it back to see if we could get a replacement kettle. Very disappointed with their response. Not interested in helping just told us to contact the manufacturer. Asked if they could do this through their supplier but would not do this. Obviously not interested in after sales support on electrical items bought in shop.

Staff lovely. Tables, ambience good. Hubby had steak pie/chips (accompanied by a large salad??) Steak pie was delicious, could have done with more chips and no salad. Seems strange to have a large dish of salad, served with pie/chips (which was wasted.) I had a chicken salad sandwich. The small size thick sandwich bread was dry, hardly any butter and just disintegrated when picked up, not helped by the large chunks of chicken (tasteless), tomato/cucumber. coleslaw really tarty. The pie was delicious but sandwich was awful. We decided not to bother with any cakes. Not sure if we will return which is a pity as over the years it was always a regular lunch venue, when we came to Nantwich.

Really tasty food, made on the premises; great atmosphere (warm and relaxing); really caring and attentive service. Only reason I dropped a star for food is I just don't get red onion or raw GREEN pepper in salad (cooked, in the quiche, was fine): should be a law against it.

Had been before, under precious ownership I realised. Waited at the counter to be hollered to the end of the counter. Ordered a flat white and tea cake. The coffee was made and was very much not a flat white. Made in a regular sized mug, the milk used was already in the jug and had no foam. Personally I found the coffee bland and looked like tea. I asked if this was a flat white and told yes - I could not be bothered to say it wasn’t. I will not be returning nor recommend.

I was advised to go here by a friend so I was expecting a good service and lunch. Unfortunately, this was not my experience. First, the lady at the till coughed all over me and the tea she was making. No hand or tissue over her mouth she didn’t even turn her head away meaning I was splattered with germs. The meal took a long time to come way over 30 mins. A long time as the food was already cooked and ready. The food was not up to scratch. My pie was only just warm and I got 14 crinkle cut oven chips. Hardly worth the money. I could have done this myself for less than £1 and it would have tasted better. The bread for the sandwich my partner had was dry and it felt like it had been out for most of the day. They also failed to bring her small bowl of chips. I had to go and ask for them. I won’t be eating there again, but then again probably my own fault for going. I shouldn’t have taken advice from someone who regularly eats at Morrison’s cafe….

Having spent the day watching the annual Battle of Nantwich in freezing temperatures, my family and I were happy to find this local coffee house to take shelter in. Attracted by the pretty decor, we entered post-rush. It was clear the staff had been busy, but I was saddened and frustrated to see them stood behind the counter ignoring us, more interested in making their own drinks and ‘going for a sit down’ than acknowledging us, the customers. The one lady who finally did acknowledge us was on the till. I felt for her as it seemed she was tasked with doing it all; taking orders, operating the till, making the drinks and also prepping the cakes, whilst the others stood around talking. And whilst she was pleasant and polite and the cakes were delicious, I’m afraid she had no idea what she was doing on the coffee machine - which is ironic when the Pillory House is described as a coffee shop. Having worked in hospitality for a number of years myself, including Costa, I observed a number of unforgivable errors by the lady using the coffee machine, particularly when the average hot drink costs £3.50. These include; - Using skimmed milk as for all hot drinks. Why? - Not purging or wiping the steaming handle after each drink. - Leaving the steaming handle steaming the milk jugs, unsupervised. - Overheating the milk. - Using spoons to scoop out foam out onto cappuccinos, or to mix chocolate powder into milk. - Adding hot water to black coffees AFTER the espresso has been extracted, destroying any potential crema. To conclude, whilst the Pillory House is attractive and cosy with great cakes, the levels of service need improving drastically. From customer engagement, to their drinks-making ability. For your business’ sake, please attend a coffee-making course as soon as possible. Thank you.

We stayed at nearby Alvaston Hall and always call in to this gift and coffee Shop when we in the location. The staff are very welcoming and knowledgeable. We just had a snack this time but the hot food looked amazing. The place was kept spotlessly clean. Believe it's routinely a great place and I imagine its an absolutely 5 star experience when its quiet and outside of core hours. Unfortunately, I visited on a Sunday at lunchtime around 2 and had a less than great experience. Which I imagine was because it had been a busy time before I visited. It was very confusing ordering food, initially, I thought I ordered at the till but then realised I ordered directly with someone at a hot counter, whilst they made meals at the same time. Several items of the menu were unavailable as they had apparently run out. After ordering available items I sat down and observed that most tables were piled high with plates. After 10 minutes or so I was approached by a lady and advised that what I had ordered was unavailable. There was no apology or suggestion of an alternative. Just 'We are out of Turkey' followed be an uncomfortable silence, with me left to decipher through questioning what was actually available on the menu, which appeared to be very little. As it had sold. When my food arrived, a tuna salad sandwich, the salad consisted of just lettuce and cucumber. The cutlery provided was a little dirty, as if it had been washed in a hurry. Whilst eating, it appeared staff turned away several groups as they needed to catch up with preparing food and washing dishes. I definitely heard them advise one lady that food would be off for 40 minutes but they could have both cakes and hot drinks. I thus do wonder whether the salad was basic because they had run out of prepared tomato and onion etc? Bar the lady that approached me to advise I needed to pick something else, albeit she seemed really stressed, the staff were friendly and professional albeit clearly up against it. I hope you visit again at a quieter time and I imagine it will be a different place entirely.

Passing through Nantwich, I breakfasted on a panini and cappuccino, which were so good I went back for cake and more coffee later. Portions are generous: buttercream means a good layer of icing, and I saw a good amount of cream being served in a cream tea. The lunch quiches looked inviting, too, but weren’t on my schedule. I’m only sorry I live so far away and am unlikely to be back in Nantwich any time soon.

Absolutely awful place. How this has 4.7 in reviews is beyond me. Staff were loud and unprofessional. No face masks worn or hair nets, hats etc.by any of them and had to listen to their gossip about a member of staff. A member of the public was clearing tables and puttng the used try’s with dishes etc on the floor of a room by the till. The table was wiped with a dirty wet dish cloth which I then had to dry with serviettes. The staff shouted down the shop several times asking for soup , orange juice and milk. There was a young man behind the counter in his quilted jacket fetching and carrying stuff for them and also taking trays on food and drink to customers. The soup was decanted from a large container into white ceramic soup bowls , these where then covered with cling film before they were put into the microwave. After seeing the soup going in and out of the microwave several times I made my partner aware of this thinking it would be served boiling hot. However when the soup was served to the table it was luke warm and served with stale bread. Certainly wouldn’t recommend a visit and won’t be returning.

Stopped here by chance for lunch. A bit ‘old fashioned’ and a tad tatty with regards to decor but a lovely lunch! Quiche (4 homemade varieties to choose from) served with chips, rice salad, pasta salad, lettuce, cucumber, tomatoes AND coleslaw! Quite mad really - I can’t see how they make any money at all! Just a small mixed salad and coleslaw would be enough! Excellent pot of tea - no weak and willing tea bags here! I’d be ditching the unnecessary extras and put the prices up a bit if it was my business! Then spend the extra cash on refurbishing both the cafe area and the ‘way-past-the-sell-by-date’ ladies loo which was pretty grim ...

Nice cosy cafe, but I’m not sure that they know what an Americano is - asked for one and got a milky, frothy coffee ! ( probably a Cappuccino ! )

We were walking past and my beagle suddenly darted through the doorway, straight to the cafe, there was no stopping him. He was on a lead so I followed shortly after, the decision was made, we will be seeking some refreshment here. Gerry had remembered that on his last visit he received a lot of attention and also received a complimentary sausage, he doesn't forget such kindness. I also remembered that last time we were in I had tried the quiche which was luxurious. This time I tried the home made lemon Bakewell, fantastic. It was late in the day and the sausages had gone, but not the bacon...Gerry was very excited when a bowl of chopped bacon rashers appeared in front of him! The food here is fresh, tasty and home cooked with a lot of love, simply delicious. Thank you for looking after my dog and thanks for looking after us humans, you make your cafe so special and your kindness and passion is endearing.

£2.95 for a flat white, wouldn't mind but they are not barista trained so wasnt really a flat white more a latte, and was way too hot. If your just wanting a decent coffee I'd avoid. Lovely staff and looking place though.

I visited here recently with a friend for lunch. I decided on the quiche and my friend chose a breakfast panini. The place only had 3 tables occupied so not very busy at all. Despite this we waited nearly half an hour for our food. I chose the mushroom quiche which came with potato wedges, potato salad, pasta salad and coleslaw. The quiche was delicious. However my friend had to wait a little longer for her panini as the waitress said she’d had a mishap with it. When it arrived it contained sausage, bacon and a cold boiled egg?!! Not what she expected at all, surely it should have been a fried egg in a hot panini........maybe the boiled egg is a Nantwich speciality! There are lots of lovely places to eat in Nantwich so it’s unlikely we’ll visit this one again in the near future.

Came here after going to Miss Marmalade’s for all of 5 minutes after extremely rude staff. Walked into Pillory Street and was immediately met with a warm welcome, settled ourselves where ever we wanted to sit, owner spoke to us like we were old friends. Milkshakes are amazing. Will definitely be coming back.

Was at the end of a visit to Nantwich and the town centre, walking to the train station and came across this little cafe come shop (at the front). It was so quaint and the prices were so cheap (that was discovered by accident). Very clean and tidy place, staff friendly. Wish I had found this place at the beginning of my walk around the town!.

Such a quaint place to walk around, and really you're spoilt for choice with where to go for lunch. We chose the Pillory House and were not disappointed. Doubles up as an art gallery, so there's plenty to browse, but the café part was really nice. Everything homemade and delicious. Staff very friendly - a nice easy place to meet friends for a chinwag over coffee or lunch. That's what I would do if I lived in Nantwich.

We stayed over for the night in the apartment about the coffee shop & it was amazing. Far more than we expected, as was the breakfast that was brought up to us in the morning.

My favourite place to take a break in Nantwich. A wealth of options to choose from, created in front of your eyes. I enjoyed a Lime milkshake while looking at the Artwork and waiting for an excellent Panni. Don't have the Mega milkshake unless you plan on being comatose for the next 24 hours.

It was a sunny afternoon & we wanted a canal-side pub. This was perfect! Had a great lunch at a reasonable price. Sat by the canal & watched the locks in operation as a narrow boat passed through. Will visit again!

Amazing food beautiful surroundings. Lovely little beer garden outside. Staff were great. Place has quite a bit of history too! Even pleased the mother-in-law! We WILL back **Update** The mother-in-law insisted we went again and I'm really glad we did. Both food and service were excellent. This will be our go to restaurant when we're in the area! (This place should be known further afield maybe it is and I'm a neanderthal.)

Sadly this was one of the worst experiences ever. On our Thursday arrival we were told that there was no room for us despite us booking with Buy a Gift.com and contacting the hotel directly to ask if we could have a late check out on Saturday. The bar man called the boss and gave us a complimentary drink. The boss found that it was in deed their error and dates had been transferred from one computer to another incorrectly. Although they were full she assured us that she could move her daughters boyfriend from his room in 15 mins. Oh my goodness....the room! No lights in the bathroom, long hairs in the sink, an absolutely filthy shower and no towels. The drawer still had the gentleman's items in and the TV didn't work. The tea tray was half prepared, the mirror was filthy , cobwebs hung from the ceiling and there were just 2 very flat mismatched pillows. My husband went down to try to rectify this. Two pillows were found and 2 very thin grey towels. My dog towels are better. the TV could not be fixed and we found our own tea tray things in the dining room. The following morning did not fare better. At 8.15am there was no cooked breakfast on offer as advertised. There were no clean cups, no knives or clean spoons, a small amount of instant coffee in the bottom of the jar and very thin poor quality white and brown bread. I went into the kitchen where 4 members of staff were standing chatting including the boss. The boss agreed that our stay had been unacceptable and agreed that we could leave and refunded the cost equal to the Buy a gift card.
