Relaxing with a lovely atmosphere with piping music. Sadly cannot say the same about the food. Food is expensive here so we didn't want to spend too much but the food should still should have been tasty anyway. We had 3 starters, Crispy (not crispy) squid in romesco sauce £10.50 - squid was chewy which had no flavour. Sweet potatoe fries which were over cooked and limp. Rosemary focaccia (bread) in balsamic/olive oil dip- chef didnt have to cook that so was scrumptious. Standards have definitely dropped so we won't be eating there for another few years. 2 out of 5 stars.

Our ‘mains’ were served before a starter and they were returned. The starter of shared focaccia bread seemed to be ordinary bread and was warm, dry and hard. The mains were finally served over 1 hour after sitting at the table even though the restaurant was not busy. A large glass of ‘house’ Merlot was £10.30 which we felt was excessive. In fairness the cost of the starter was voided, the staff were pleasant and helpful and the ambience was nice. Based on our experience we cannot recommend this establishment nor will we return

Disappointingly average at best for a lovely village pub/hotel. Stopped off enroute home after a weekend away, wanted lunch, ordered two salads, took 40 mins to arrive (acceptable if busy but only roughly 10 people in there and non eating). Blandly presented, Caesar salad was swimming in sauce and lacked presentation! If hadn’t added chicken it would have been very poor and exceptionally over priced, As salad portion very small. I think I’d say it’s the worst Caesar I’ve ever had. Menu lacked gluten free options. Comedy highlight was the manager clodding the large “no smoking” A frame around the patio area, where he lobbed it around so much it fell apart !! Instead he could have politely said to the gent smoking this is a no smoking area.

This was a very welcoming restaurant, both in decor and layout. The staff also made us feel as if we were old friends. Then came the first small niggle. We were given our menus and the drinks that we had ordered, but then had to wait 25 minutes for someone to come and take our order, even though there were only three other diners at that point. Our waitress informed us that a couple of items were currently not available due to awaiting deliveries. However this did not affect what we wanted to order. The food when it eventually arrived was superb, but then came the second little niggle. One of our party had ordered a side dish of Samphire. She was told that it would come with peas and beans as well which was fine. When it arrived the dish was just peas and beans but no Samphire. When we pointed this out we were told that they had run out of Samphire even though one of the main courses was served with Samphire on it, so the item was removed from our bill. Also at no point during our meal did anyone come and ask us if everything was okay. Despite the small niggles I think we would probably still come back for another meal.

If you want to eat reheated food from a supermarket this is the place!!! Worst pub food I have ever eaten and I think the staff know it as no one bothered to ask how the food was. We ordered the kebab for starters which was hard as nails. The fish schnitzel was simply fried without any seasoning. The asparagus gnocchi had two strands of overcooked asparagus and the gnocchi was from a packet! I won’t even expand about the dismal burger and steak. It’s cheaper to buy food from a supermarket and cook it at home! Very sad that the food and its standard lets the place down.

My friend and I decided to try breakfast here, a new service provided by the Pilgrim. We were greeted, in not the most welcoming manner by Emily, who's first comment was are we guests? After making a show of checking a table plan (only 5 other tables being used) we were grudgingly shown to a table. Our server took our order for drinks and food, the coffee was good but I had to chase for sugar. After an inordinate amount of time our food arrived, I again had to leave the table for butter for our toast. When the butter arrived it was sloshing about in water at the bottom of the serving dish. At no point during our meal did anyone check the food was OK, or if we needed another drink. When I settled the bill I requested that the Manager be called as I wished to state how unwelcome we were made to feel, as walk in customers. I believe Emily listened intently, and gave me a perfunctory apology. The food was OK, the service appalling. Needless to say I won't be visiting there again.

The pub is absolutely stunning inside and out, the foh staff are professional and attentive. unfortunately this is where is goes from professional to abysmal, pub was fairly quiet for a Saturday night, table of 4, I ordered the prawn cocktail which entailed a pinch of prawns that had so little Mary rose might as well have had none, shredded lettuce, tomato and cumber served with white bread and butter that seemed to be frozen it was impossible to spread, my friend ordered the mushrooms, 2 tiny flat mushrooms….for £7 what was the cost price on that? 50p and they came out cold. I then had confit duck for main course which was also like the salad… dry over cooked not confit but deep fried by the looks of it, hispi cabbage that had been boiled and not finished in butter or even season, and a croquette, croquettes are meant to be a cylinder shape btw not flat! No sauce either. Either your chefs are lazy and are in the wrong job, or your management are clueless and don’t know what good food looks, taste like, either way what a waste of food and a evening, good job I only get 1 night a week free so it limits the amount of disappointment I have to suffer with these places. This review is written by a chef of 15 years, head chef in various places, if the chefs read this I know you didn’t give a toss about the food you put on the plates.

We had a Valentines meal at the Pilgrim (ahhh). We were curious as the pub had been closed for a refurb and we were pleased with the result. Additional seating, new loos and improvements in the kitchen. We had warm and attentive service, our food arrived in good time and all was well. My only gripe was the pork belly which was overcooked on the top so the rind was like concrete while quite a lot of fat remained in the layers. No, the evening was a success and after my Wife was presented with a complimentary red rose, I was golden..! In the summer it'll be really popular again and deservedly so. Yes, we'll be back.

Looks nice cosy place on arrival. Staff are pleasant, efficient rather than friendly but all good. Garlic mushrooms to start, was stunned that there were only TWO of them. Awful value. Main course was pork belly and cooked nicely. Nothing much with it other than small spoon of mash so pleased l ordered side of fries. Other main was fish and chips, fish tasted fine but the batter was very dark and slightly hard. It was NOT worth £18, Shame it was spoiled. Desserts were Bakewell tart, which was nice but absolutely tiny with a HAIR in it and bread and butter pudding which was tasteless and very small portion again. Understand it is difficult in these times to make a profit but really if you serve bad quality food or very small portions when it's nice, customers will not return. Most of us are feeling the pinch financially and our custom is in support of local places. It's a lovely pub but no atmosphere, suspect people can't afford to drink and socialise as one did. We did not complain at the time, no point as we didn't want to cause a problem but we're only there just over an hour and left feeling money badly spent and shall not return. Feel ripped off.

We had the Fullers Christmas menu and though the starter and pudding were OK, the Turkey dinner was dreadful. The turkey was as dry as sandpaper, the parsnips shrivelled beyond and sprouts as hard as nails. The staff weren't remotely bothered when we told them. Myself and my partner thought we’d support a pub in the village and go for dinner rather than heading into town. I had the ribs, they arrived. All two of them. Two ribs. The (two) ribs were pretty much 75% fat and gristle and were really tough. Nothing fell off the bone. And trying to get any meat off was a chore. Alongside the (two) ribs I had about 15 chips, four onion rings and a small pot of coleslaw. All for £18. My partner had the burger, which was not superb or worth the price. It was ok at best. When staff asked how the food was I provided feedback on the (two) ribs and was told it’s just what they get sent from Fullers. But I would have liked to hope if the chef can see something is of poor quality they wouldn’t serve it. Offered one drink in return of the poor experience. Shame, a nice pub for a drink (pricey but nice) but I won’t be eating here again. And would not recommend the (two) ribs.

Booked to take family and grandchildren for 6.30. 3 items on the menu they were out off, wings as a starter, ribs as a main and no shortbread for the posset, we were the only ones eating at the time, understaffed, the crispy slow cooked belly pork obviously wasn't as we had to send it back as the top fat was not cooked, miniscule ortion for £19, tiny lump in the middle of the plate with not a lot else. I'd be embarrassed to serve that. 5 of the meals came, had to wait another 10 mins for the remainder and 20 mins for a side of brocolli. The burger wasn't much, Macdonalds would have been better and that's saying something. Such a shame as its a lovely looking pub inside and out but very overpriced for what they give you. OK for a drink but would not eat there again.

Excellent cup of coffee here around midday, on way to Buckler's Hard. Very quiet at this time but the pub was cosy with massive low beams festooned with fairy lights. We're not tall so OK but server was and he had to duck several times! The bar was constructed of brick in an attractive herringbone pattern. We were due to stop for dinner the next evening on the way home but had to cancel because the weather was so wet that we went home early. This was a pity, as the venue was charming, complete with thatched roof. There's a newer, thatched building facing the pub with hotel rooms available. Unfortunately, it's right next to a busy road, so could be noisy. But I'm sure other attractions make up for this.

Went for quiet lunch with the wife after visiting Southampton. The menu said Steak and Ale pie so we ordered two. Horrified to find that not only was it not steak but chiken and ham and there was next to no chicken in the pie and absolutely no ham at all. We had a family lunch here yesterday and was to be a happy occasion catching up but was hampered by really bad service. We ordered 5 Sunday roast plates. Were given only 1 gravy dish serving for 2 person. Would have thought it’s easy maths when it’s 5 roasts at least bring 2 or 3 gravy’s worth. Told the waitress we needed 2 more as everyone does love gravy and it took about 20 minutes before we got the second gravy by which our beef roasts had turned cold. We ordered chips but was given purple cabbage instead so told the waitress who took our order and attended to our table. The chips arrived about 15 minutes later. Asked what happened to our third gravy which by this time we have given up and decidedly thought we are not going to even be bothered with ordering puddings and just want to get out of here soon as we can. Too frustrating as we only communicated with this one waitress who seemed not to understand or know what to do. Finally third gravy arrived with the manager as we have requested to speak with and she explained that that’s the last gravy dish and that they had made a big pot that day plus gravy should have been on our roast when served. We explained that we were served with no gravy on our plates hence the ask. She seems at lost on what to do and said that’s not how they usually serve their roasts. I have a photo of my roast plate without gravy here. I then suggest that the manager talk to the kitchen staff as it’s clearly something they need to sort internally. We saw another table earlier on where two person having roasts were given 2 gravy dish! And we were 5 people. Overall food was delicious but not coming back for the terrible service though to be fair they did give us a 10 percent discount and we did pay for the purple cabbage which we hadn’t ordered but eaten anyway.

Took my Mum here for her birthday. The staff were not very welcoming, I would almost say hostile. We had to wait ages for our drinks order. One of our forks was crusted in food. We then had to wait quite a while to order our food and that took a very long time to arrive considering there were only 3 other tables in the restaurant that had customers eating. I had the duck which was dry, very small and missing the peanuts it was supposed to be served with. My Mum had the pie of the day which had a very tough crust. The pudding that we wanted was not available. Overall an expensive and disappointing meal.

It could be said I’m a regular here despite the 130+ miles between us! No visit to the New Forest is complete without a pop in for lunch at The Pilgrim - hell we even time our ferry to the IoW to include lunch here on the way! Always a friendly welcome and great food. On Monday (2nd May) we dropped in for lunch. The lamb pie served with spring greens and mash was phenomenally fab. I would’ve taken a photo but I couldn’t wait to get stuck in! Unfortunately we were both too full to sample the Bakewell Tart tempting us so decided to book for Sunday lunch and our waitress kindly offered to make the booking for us. When Sunday (8th May) arrived it was quite possibly the hottest day of the year so I asked our previous waitress if it would be possible to sit and eat outside instead. She even remembered my name! (lady with dark hair and glasses - top notch customer service) The gent at the bar was friendly, chatty and helpful. Oh and the Shiraz is always good and at perfect temperature. Everything on my plate was perfect (Roast Beef) and I was determined to try the Bakewell tart. Oh my, that was divine! Somehow I managed to restrain myself from diving straight in and photographed it first! Roll on October when I’ll next be passing through, I’m hopeful that the Apple Crumble will be back on the autumn menu - is that a subtle enough hint?!

Not the first time we’ve been here but unless your staff and their attitude and attention changes we won’t be back. We were asked if we wanted to sit in the bar or the restaurant where there is table service. We picked the restaurant for a change for a bit of a treat. Seemed a bit of an effort so why bother asking? It wasn’t busy. However, after being shown to our table it was clear the attention was more on preparing furniture and table set up for a large group booking that was due later in the day. We sat for just over 10 minutes no one returned to offer a drink or take our food order. Like I said they were not at all busy. Maybe they forgot but pretty sure we were noticed a few times but just ignored. We walked out and went elsewhere. Probably not the best way to treat punters returning to local businesses after the last couple of years but there we have it! Those arriving for drinks only were served immediately at the bar. If you don’t wish to provide the service, don’t offer it.

The roast beef received good reports, the roast chicken was served “on the bone” and was not enjoyed, the hake dish was enjoyed, if quite a small portion, the Fish & Chips was disappointing, because the fish was over cooked. In my experience all Fullers pubs seem to write an excellent menu and never deliver, always style over substance and at an inflated price. Visited the pilgrim yesterday and it was brilliant. I had a cajun chicken sandwich with delicious chips and my partner had the glazed ham hock with egg, chips and pineapple salsa. That was amazing. It was advertised as a small plate at 8 pounds. Well it was large as far as we were concerned! The chef should be very proud, the individual signing of that days menus was a nice touch. The pub itself is also beautiful and the atmosphere welcoming. It only loses a star for my wait at the bar but saying that the staff were friendly once serving me. Definitely going back.

I don’t live too far away from the Pilgrim Inn so it is my ‘local’, however I am really pleased that they are. I do not use it much for just a drink, but it is my first choice when friends come over for a relaxing environment to have food.

Heard so much above this place , even considered staying for three nights. Popped in for lunch around 1300hrs on Thursday 27th December. Quite, plenty of tables to sit at. Staff seemed under pressure and openily discussing shift schedules.

we visited the pilgrims inn on Saturday lunch time 17/11/18 this is a very nice pub and we have visited on a number of occasions and have enjoyed nice food but sadly on this occasion we decided to have the risotto bad choice the portion size was a bit of a shock to us both this was a main course meal and the portion would not have filled a tea cup and it was very salty and at £13-00 each a total of £26-00 for little more than two cups of salty risotto rice very, very disappointed and would be very reluctant to return soley based on this experience

We found this beautiful place, thanks to a sign we saw whilst travelling in the car. The staff were friendly and welcoming and the lunch was delicious. A great place to visit to start our 2 day stay in Hampshire.

We had dinner in the Pilgrim Inn when we were also staying overnight. It was during the hot weather when a lot of people chose to sit outside, and I liked that even the garden was split into smoking and non smoking sections. There was also water thoughtfully provided for 4 legged visitors.

The restaurant has a varied menu and the choice is sufficiently wide to suit most tastes. Children’s option and portions are offered. Staff were very welcoming and helpful. Those with dogs are seated in a separate but equally pleasant area. Plenty of parking

We popped into the Pilgrim Inn pub/restaurant for a light lunch today. Such a miserable day outside and we were frozen having become soaked after being out in the dreadful weather.

We were looking for some nice pub food and followed the brown tourist signs from the Marchwood by-pass to the Pilgrim Inn. We weren’t disappointed. It was early on Sunday afternoon and my partner wanted a roast lunch. They had a pork roast on the specials board, which was excellent and came with a good selection of trimmings. I had a lamb and mint burger, which was very tasty, and on a fresh brioche bun with some nicely cooked chips. Exactly what we wanted.

Me and my husband are here 2/8/18 and we have a very enjoyable meal. The pub was surprisingly empty and hardly any people eating. We had a meal here with the family around 6 weeks ago and it was poor but thought we would try again. This time is was very good.

Ate here as part of out hotel stay, there was a wide selection on the menu, loved the black pudding starter which was delicious. The burgers were great and well made, didn't need to order dessert as we were stuffed!

The food was ordered and finally delivered one hour later after prompting the staff. The chicken salad arrived without the chicken and the burgers were mediocre. Added to this, the managers as was sullen....No apologies from her. Save your money, go elsewhere!

Popped in a couple of weeks ago at 8:30. Last food orders at 9 so we were keen to order food before. Sat and waited for 15 minutes no one came to take our order yet bar staff were just stood chatting not interested in customers. We then went to order at the bar only to be told the kitchen was closed. The young man who served us was rude and uninterested. We have also seen this lad before racing out the car park in his orange car care free which is poor behaviour considering young kids were around. We are locals and regularly pop in but after being treated the way we were, we will not be returning.

We visited for dinner with my parents and 5 year old. From arriving we were there for two hours only having eaten main courses and my son had a child’s desert. The service was incredibly slow for everything, even when waiting for the bill, and the restaurant was not even half full. Absolutely agree with previous reviews that the food is overpriced, £12 for a very small Caesar salad, £14 for an average burger and chips. Kids fish and chips had the skin left on and bones in it. The setting is lovely but the food and service is pretty rubbish. Left feeling ripped off and wish we’d gone to one of the other local alternatives that offer far better value for money.

We stayed overnight (see separate 5* review) and thought we would eat in the restaurant. We decided to have the £16 per head Sunday roast. It was quite simply dreadful. The sirloin beef was tough and gristley. It was as also as though the meat had been left under a heat lamp for too long. The Yorkshire pudding was like cardboard where it had dried out.We were given a discount on our bill as the meal did not meet their usual standard. When we paid we found the meals were adjudged to be £2.40 per meal off their usual standard. The meal spoilt the day and the discount was derisory. We wouldn't eat here again.

My mother-in-law and sister-in-law stayed here for a couple nights whilst visiting us. They were in a beautiful room, which was really quiet. They had a lovely breakfast each morning and could not praise the hotel enough. Myself and family joined them for dinner last night and we had a fantastic meal. The food was fresh, well prepared and tasty. Staff were friendly and efficient and all in all excellent value. We will be back.

I stayed in the attached hotel the night before my cruise. I am gluten free and my friend is gluten free and vegan. We both have to eat that way for medical reasons. The pub was awesome, they made us fresh chips in clean oil to avoid cross contamination and they offered dishes that could be made gf as well as a gf/v chickpea cauliflower curry salad that my friend got. They also have a traditional. At with gin and tonics that you can mix and match. You can sit inside or outside and they are dog friendly.

We have been going to the Pilgrim for some time for the odd pint but today decided to have lunch. We both ordered the salmon, cucumber and cream cheese sandwich with a side of chips between us. The sandwiches arrived 15 to 20 mins later and the waiter went back for the chips. My wife bit into her sandwich and found no cream cheese. I looked in mine and there was none in mine too. When the waiter returned with the chips, we pointed out the omission. He took the sandwiches away and said it would take 5 minutes to sort it. A woman came out with the same sandwiches (really) with my wife’s bite from hers. A smear of cream cheese was now in the sandwiches but at £7.00 per sandwich I was surprised at the lack of cream cheese and the fact our sandwiches had not been replaced. Will not be lunching there again.

Badly made coffee, extremely weak, no flavour. Normally Costa I find to be OK, not particularly great but reliably OK. Not at this branch.

Made a special visit to come here, was not worth it! Dirty and empty shelves! No bread and cakes as advertised! I wouldn’t exactly call two picnic benches a cafe especially being along side pet food! Do not be fooled by the photos!

I'd rang in the week before the Saturday (19th Oct) lunchtime, and pre-booked a table for our party of 13, and I said we needed 2 high-chairs. (How nice it was to ring and book a table verbally, instead of booking on-line.) On the day, we arrived to find 3 tables pushed together for us, and all was good, though no high-chairs, which the staff member got sorted fast. We arrived in a bit of a disjointed way (an initial 5, then a 3, then a 5), but this caused no problem, and we had drinks on tab. Our meal experience was really very good, with good attention by all staff (at bar and at table). The food (we had main and dessert) came in good time, and it was delicious. All in our party thought their main course was excellent, being really flavoursome. I had the cottage pie, it was delightful, as was my partner's pork rump steak. Yes, prices were a couple of pounds more per plate for mains, but definitely worth it. At no time were we hurried along, or unduly hassled, and we ended up spending much of a great Saturday afternoon there. Our 7yo in the party enjoyed the wooden play apparatus outside, and I loved the Exmoor ales! Lastly, how refreshing to have no service charge automatically added, and allow customers to decide. We'd never eaten there before, but we will again!
