We were warmly welcomed by smiling staff and given a choice where to sit. We chose the conservatory with delightful views owner the lawns to the river and marina. The menu had signs of a creative kitchen with a small but tasty collection of dishes at reasonable prices. We chose the fish and chips. It as a big fillet with crisp good quality batter and nicely coloured chips. Very tasty. The desserts were also enjoyed. We could image that this pub has very busy times as it’s such a nice position on the river and a super venue.

If I could rate this establishment it would be 0. We booked table for 5 and were seated at a small table barely big enough for 4. Waitress did not have a clue what beers were available when asked to check could barely recall what was available. Ordered orange juice and sparkling water received orange juice and still water. We ordered our meals. My husband and I had eaten our starters before my daughter got hers. Jug of water we ordered arrived without glasses had to request 5 glasses. The roast beef dinner was palatable apart from my daughter’s who left most of her beef as it looked like the end piece that had been cooked to death. I spoke to the manager regarding these issues as I wanted to give him the opportunity to put things right rather than giving this establishment a bad review. The manager wasn’t particularly interested as he said they were very busy but he would adjust the bill. We were disappointed as this was a special occasion for 2 mums which had been spoilt by complete lack of customer care and service..so we left without dessert or coffee. When we got our bill there was a ‘gesture of goodwill’ of £18.00. There was no apology or offer to put things right e.g. move us to a more suitable table. When we left the table was still empty. Let this be a review to be considered by potential customers hoping for a pleasant experience especially if it’s for a special occasion.

This is beautiful location & the inside of the pub/restaurant seems to have been re styled since our last visit and looked very nice indeed. However, the sun was out the day we went (I know!) so we wanted to take advantage & took my elderly Mum & the Dog. Sat on the grassed area picnic benches to the front of the building looking at the river - they don't serve food there. Asking at the bar we moved to the "far end of the building" again on picnic tables provided, bit further away from the river but in pleasant shade but enough to still enjoy the sunshine. Went to place order - wrong seating - moved again, this time to decked balcony - glass screens determining doggy area (apparently). However, there was no shade for said pooch. The fishfinger sandwich was lovely - and after the game of musical chairs we had worked up an appetite (although by now, Hubby had "a face on"!) Just a little signage and a couple of extra table umbrellas would really up the game to make a visit much more enjoyable. So "No food served on grassed area" & "Dogs only allowed on decked area at far end of building".......

Hadn't eaten at the Pike and Eel since pre pandemic, it's such a beautiful place we were all really looking forward to returning. Despite having many options the menu doesn't really cater to traditional pub grub and is certainly not inexpensive at £18 for cod and chips. One member of the group literally didn't have an option on the menu to choose and left hungry after eating half or less of the dish she chose. A good old scampi and chips or even a prawn cocktail would have sufficed, they may be aiming for a less basic menu but that's exactly what some customers want. My review of 4 years ago couldn't have been better and we ate there again not long after that which was equally enjoyable. Whilst that day we had sandwiches even the sandwich menu options have changed for the very much worse. Staff were pleasant and you will never find a nicer location. My main gripe is the 10% "discretionary service charge" added to the bill. I like to leave a cash tip on the table and adding it to the bill is putting the customer in a half nelson and challenging them to have it removed. I know they would have removed it if asked but who wants to show themselves up at the table for that? Anyway, their loss as the tip on the bill was less than I would have left on the table but I truly object to this form of compulsory discretionary service charge and that's what has really driven this review today. It wouldn't take much for the Pike and Eel to regain 5 stars and it's such a beautiful location it deserves to be. I suspect the Pike and Eel has changed management since we were last there and unfortunately not for the better.

Very disappointing Sunday lunch. The vegetables were so al dente they were only luke-warm when the food arrived, so went cold very quickly. I had the beef which was tough and had lots of gristle. My mum had the pork which she enjoyed. The roast potatoes were anaemic and barely cooked through - they needed another 20 minutes in the oven to crisp up and get fluffy in the middle and the gravy was quite thin. The whole meal could have been hotter. Not great when the best part of the meal was the mint they give you with the bill. Such a shame as I have eaten here many times (before Covid) and the food was excellent. Not likely to return any time soon.

We were invited by our daughter for a Mother's Day treat. The lobster and Crab parcels tasted like soft cheese. The jack fruit was tasty but the duck and orange pate was served with hard bread. The "Shoulder of lamb" was a mere 3 slices of meat, not the shoulder I was thinking off. The Sirloin of beef was of the same quality and quantity as the lamb. The accompanying vegetables appeared to be fried, a bit burnt. Any pub carvery would serve a better quality product. and not charge £30 ! See "Toby Carvery" better cooked From 11.49. After preordering the meal, the staff were not made aware of this, even after a reminder upon entering. I still took 30 minutes to come and take an order even with the restaurant half full/empty. Some of the staff were not aware of how to serve a customer, and handed the plates over others, we were at a corner table but some members of staff managed to make the journey all the way round with out incident. The last time we ate there , it was under the old management. The new owners should train their staff properly, it will benefit the customer, the staff because they will have some skills and the restaurant because some customers may return. The place has gone from fine dining to pub grub at fine dining prices. It transpired later that we had not been charged for the deserts, we assume it was by way of apology for the meal, but it could be that they are not up to the service.

Went for a family lunch. Whilst there appeared to be plenty of staff, they were very young and inexperienced. That can happen, but it's definitely not OK for the older more experienced staff/ managers to chat to each other or to their local customers while ignoring the obvious problems around them. This just frustrated us. There was a clear lack of training, and a lack of care from those with training. Drink orders were consistently wrong, multiple times. Took 20 mins for our drinks to arrive, eventually just went to the bar ourselves. Many items out of stock. Repeatedly asked for help with deserts, eventually gave up and left. The food was OK- big fan of the green veg and gravy but the meat was dry, lack of seasoning and got very cold very quickly. My family had said it was great on previous visits but sadly we all left underwhelmed and unlikely to return.

We booked a table for 4 today and staff were very pleasant and attentive but unfortunately the lunch was marred by the roast potatoes being drenched in garlic to the effect that 2 hours later that’s all we can taste, and it spoiled the lunch for us . Myself and partner are both trained chefs and in our opinion garlic has no place on roast lunch with the exception of lamb where it’s added during cooking but mot so it’s overwhelming everything else. We have eaten there in the past and can only assume the chef has changed and needs addressing over the issue. My partner came home with stomach ache too just to compound the issue he thinks the cauliflower was a little off as it smelt a little high but having consumed some of the potatoes it was difficult to tell thanks to the heavy garlic presence. We do use quite a lot of garlic at home but you would not taste it in the food we cook which is as it should be. It was very disappointing as it was my birthday and we had intended to bring our guests who are visiting from the state's in the next few weeks , we have been there with them on every occasion they are in the uk and they love the place. But after this visit beautiful as the settings are I may have to find an alternative venue , whilst I’m writing an opinion my daughter is disabled and although there is a disable entrance via the room which is under refurbishment it is not promoted or clearly signposted which would be a help to new party going there. I understand that there has been some major improvement s going on this last year to the entire site which will only increase its popularity in the future, but chef needs to understand and taste the food before it goes out into the dining room.

We use this pub restaurant frequently as boat owners, and it never fails to impress. Recent changes have seen longer kitchen opening hours and some lighter additions to the menu. The specials are indeed often special. Sunday lunch is a particular highlight - always generous helpings and excellent veg which have not sat around waiting for use - fresh cooked. Staff attentive without being over-attentive. The bar is well stocked with interesting beers, gins and soft drinks. My only suggestion is get some bigger gravy boats - they are like drinking beer in a shot glass. The poor staff are always fetching more gravy and do so willingly because the gravy boats are more like gravy dingys. Overall, however that is a small point.

We started going back to P&E; earlier this year and although going through an uplift our earlier visit was okay (not brilliant) but the last visit was dreadful and lacking on so many levels. Some parts of the meal were cold and other parts not cooked as ordered. Why bother asking how you’d like your meat cooking if you then cook it totally different. We did complain at the table and although the waitress tried her best they didn’t seem to be supported by anyone in authority. Maybe a tip for front of house management to show their face to respond to customers when they take the time to complain. Toilets are clearly going through a refurbishment with no obvious signage as to if men and woman were to use the same facilities with those unsure queuing to use the diabled toilet which actually looked more like a janitors store cupboard. Be giving a wide berth and wanting to hear consistent feedback from others of improvements before returning. It’s too hit and miss at the moment.

Once an attractive old riverside pub, now spoiled by an ugly, flat roofed extension and cheap PVCU double glazed windows in the oldest part of the building. The location is great in the summer as it is right on the river and has a large garden but the outdoor furniture is very tired and rest of the place is a let down. A curious mixture of old country pub and 1970's Crossroads motel inside, a stale, flat, boring atmosphere in the bar area, food is ok but nothing more. I would imagine that this place only survives due to the income generated by the attached marina.

Very good choice on menu, plus specials board, quality of food and service was excellent, there is some refurbishment going on within the main area and the external hotel rooms, which I am certain will compliment what was a great experience.

This is my cousin's local and at one time was a wonderful, friendly riverside pub. What a waste of a perfectly situated venue. We asked for a lime and soda - no soda. At least the beer was available. But asked for crisps - no crisps. Asked for nuts - no nuts. The staff could not have been less interested in us. Glasses and full ash trays remained on the tables around us while the staff sat chatting and smoking not far from us. We will not visit this place again.

Myself and some family came here on a Sunday evening for a quiet meal, we've been here before for a drink and it's always quite a pleasant experience and the staff are always friendly. Unfortunately the food we experienced really wasn't at all appealing, I had the cod and chips, the batter was so greasy and lacked any flavour and the fish inside had no flavour at all and was very wet, the peas had been cooking for a month by the taste of things and the chips were nothing write home about. One of the other members of our party had scampi which I can only assume was the cheap stuff from Iceland. There is no menu, just a specials board to choose from. The staff were fine, I have no complaints there they were all very pleasant. The place is very rundown but I believe they've just been taken over so can only hope that's going to be worked on in the near future.

Visited at the weekend for a drink. The setting by the river is wonderful and on a sunny day what could be better. However I was shocked at the price of four drinks. Three bitter shandies and a pint of cider came to over £18. I will certainly not be visiting the Pike and Eel for a drink again.

We Popped in for a quick lunch on Tuesday. We were welcomed by the lovely Ben who always has a smile on his face..ordered our drinks while we looked at the menu. They were fairly busy so had a bit of a wait for our food but nothing to bad. 1x sausage baguette and 2x beef baguettes with Cajun chips all of which were excellent . The roast beef was extremely tender and very tasty. One more round of drinks to finish off before we were on our way. This place is getting better every time we come. Happy friendly staff. Good food at reasonable prices. Will be back again soon.

Stayed overnight here. Nice rooms but in the bathroom there were massive cobwebs over the bath in the corner. The real fiasco started at breakfast. Arrived in the dining room at 9.10am - breakfast was 8 -10am. We were informed the Chef had not turned up and it would be at least 10 mins before the 3rd chef would arrive for hot food. Eventually we were asked for our order - scrambled egg & beans for me & 2 eggs on toast for my partner. At 9.55am I was served a full breakfast with a fried egg and my partner 2 eggs on a plate and told to make his own toast in the toaster on the table!!! 2 other couples had items missing on 2 of their 4 full breakfasts which they informed the waitress but nothing was done for them. Really; is this any way to treat customers!!!!!!! Gone downhill since new owners took over.

On 29th November I travelled from Croydon and spent a few hours with my junior school pal and his family at St Ives. They own a boat which is moored at the marina and treated me to lunch at the Eel and Pike clubhouse in this gorgeous location. with wonderful views and panoramas. We were early and the only customers in the restaurant but, nonetheless, there was a lovely atmosphere, and the staff made us feel most welcome. The lunch was delicious, reasonably priced and served promptly by efficient and friendly staff. The sun was shining and with good food, drink and conversation it was with great reluctance that I headed to the station and back home.

I contacted Jason regarding Sunday lunch for fifteen and am very glad I did. He was extremely helpful providing firstly a menu for starter and main and later a further menu for same plus desert. The prices were very reasonable and we had no difficulty ordering the meals ahead which saved time and waiting around when we got there. The table setting in the restaurant at the front of the dining room was lovely with views over the river and the tables looked really nice with pristine white table cloths, clean and shiny cutlery and glasses. The staff were also lovely, efficient and attentive and didn’t make us feel rushed in any way. The food was ample, tasty, well presented and left us feeling relaxed and replete. I would like to commend the Pike and Eel and thank Jason and his team for a lovely dining experience.

I went to the Pike & Eel for my birthday meal with my family. We were made very welcome by the manager and his staff. The food was first class and they went out of their way to accommodate our granddaughter who was with us. She was really happy with her meal as were the rest of the family. We would recommend the Pike & Eel to all our friends and family. It is a big improvement since we went a year ago and we are already planning a return trip. Keep up the good work Jason and team.

The staff & service are friendly but this doesn't compensate for lousy food! The best thing about the meal was the whitebait starter, which were crispy and tasty (although not cajun as stated) and its hard to find this on offer these days. However, the 5 main courses our table chose were dreadful. Very few prawns in the linguine, an utterly tasteless piece of hake (what a waste) and the sauce looked exactly the same as a mullagatawny soup starter (and probably was plus a sprinkle of paprika). A gammon steak & eggs looked ok (but that is hard to mess up) and a ham, egg & chips dish ordered without the ham came up with a couple of slices of dubious-looking pink meat anyway. Perhaps the worst dish was a beef stew and dumplings with a scum on the top and crusty dumplings (not soft and fluffy as they should be). The accompanying veg tasted of absolutely nothing at all - boiled potatoes, cauliflower, carrots and something that might have been cabbage. One person ordered dessert (tiramisu) which was nice but obviously not made on the premises. At £130+ including wine (at least that was ok) its a most disappointing rip-off. Will never bother eating there again.
