When this used to be Pier 9 (just last year), owned by the same hotel, this was our (and many other's) "it" place for special occasions in the area. It WAS very elegant, with great food and wonderful views.

Came here for a nice dinner with my partner, it was quite quiet which was lovely, we were seated in a lovely secluded area and the decor gave a nice air of luxury. The menu is quite unusual which is nice, good to have a different choice. My partner had lamb chops with the most amazing cheesy, leeky, mashed potatoes which I enjoyed sharing! For desert my panna cotta with rhubarb was excellent.

We realised that Pier 9 had been slightly down-graded to Cafe Zanzibar and that it wasn't going to be exactly the same as before. They had certainly made savings on the menu printing, unusually photocopied as it was, black and white, on a single piece of A4 paper. And the arrangement of information on the menu took a little navigating. Luckily I don't usually have a starter, so not finding any didn't bother me, but it was strange. The service was very good and everything was brought in a timely way. John, Colette and Bianca were exactly the right level of attentive without being intrusive, and so friendly. Both our mains were delicious, we had the salmon and the lamb, and so were the puddings, and we had a really nice time.

The staff were lovely but I was very disappointed with the food. My friends lamb was way too tough and my bubble and squeak I could of easily made myself for a fraction of the price. Was nothing special and over priced. The pudding was also nothing special. The red wine was good. I won't go back or recommend to anyone.

I came here with my Mum and her cousin from France expecting refined dining. What I got was a menu on a flimsy piece of paper with no starters, the waitress pointing to the light bights as the starters. The music was radio one-ish. The vegetarian choice I preferred was out of stock. That said the waitress changed the music (which she said was on spotify) to some jazz for us...and the food was good....but not the refined dining I thought I was bringing my elders too. I was glad we sat around the corner (on comfy seats) which was a bit quieter

I have been to the Zanzibar hotel restaurant many many times, and always had a wonderful meal, lovely staff and amazing atmosphere. It was the ONLY smart place to eat in st Leonard's. I was devastated to find it has turned into a " cafe ". The lovely polish and latvian staff have gone, no more table cloth or nice tables, a BOOTH? No flowers and so on. Why would you want to sit on a stool? In the window?Gold sofas? And palm tree wallpaper? Oh dear.I imagine it has an affect on the hotel as does not reflect a five star place anymore. GUTTED.Sadly we wont be back, and off to the old town for us, porters here we come.A very bad move we feel, so sorry, staff are lovely and food ok, but the atmosphere long gone, BIG MISTAKE guys. Pier Nine has been my favourite local restaurant for a few years with friends and family always looking forward to a delicious meal. Always great food, beautiful dining room, the sea view thoughtful keenly priced wine list and very lovely staff. So I was devastated on a visit (prebooked for a birthday lunch for my sister) on Sunday to find that it has had a make over and is a cafe, Cafe Zanzibar, no longer a delightful restaurant. The menu is now a varied one but cafe style not restaurant quality and the redecoration makes it far more bar like with every cliched new fitting. The table in the window has been removed and a stand up at the shelf area added instead. A large bar now along one wall. The elegant tables and chairs replaced with more downmarket furnishings. The food was OK but not great like it once was. Two had the roast and two the pedestrian fish pie. The usually tasty local cheeses cheeseboard to follow was ruined by being straight from the fridge. The very lovely staff still remain but it's not enough to bring me back. Gutted...........

We went to the hotel before our meal just to check out the menu. We had a really friendly welcome and the place looked great. Bright and decorated nicely. We were given a drink on the house and remembered well on our return for dinner. Given a choice of tables we sat at a booth but then swapped to a table in the back corner. Service was great. Small menu but enough options to choose from. Starters were great -complimentary bread given too. Mains were a perfect size. Full of flavour and lovely. Equally top puddings. All in all a very reasonably priced meal and great food! Would definitely recommend!

Although the hotel itself was, in our opinion overpriced and poor value, the restaurant was excellent providing each of a group of 6 with really good food; decent (perhaps a tad expensive) bottles of wine; friendly, attentive but not overbearing service; very good (though limited choice of perhaps 10? ) cocktails; and given the quality of the food (hence caveat of relatively) reasonably priced. Definitely recommend the restaurant.

Booked for our works Christmas party expecting a good level of service but came away very disappointed. The traditional turkey dinner arrived (not hot enough). The turkey was from a roll of turkey not a fresh turkey, the Yorkshire pudding was burnt, and absolutely no vegetables! We asked if vegetables were to be served with the meal which seemed to take the waitress by surprise too! We then had to wait another 10 minutes before they arrived by which time we had nearly finished our main course. When the vegetables did eventually make an appearance there was not enough for everyone as they use very small bowls, so we had to ask for more. The menu states "with traditional trimmings" meaning 2 sausages in bacon, a small round of stuffing and two halves of a roast potato and a little gravy. So you get exactly that, a Christmas dinner without any vegetables ! The Christmas pudding was a better in that it was tasty and hot but also dry. I had to ask for cream as none was offered. Only a very small jug of cream arrived for 3 people to share! This really is not up to standard and nothing like it used to be before it changed ownership. Sorry this restaurant does not deserve your custom. Take your money elsewhere, don't waste it here!

Went for Sunday/ Birthday lunch, our third visit here. Starters arrived promptly and all were very well presented and tasted good, so we thought we were in for a great meal. Problems started with the main course. A lengthy wait for the mains to arrive, they were busy and had a large table in the main area, so we waited. Beef was well presented, but could have been hotter, Tagliatelle was ok, The vegetarian dish of Curried Parsnip with spinach pakoras became an issue. What actually was served was a leek risotto with spinach pakoras. There was a separate dish on the menu based around Leek risotto, but as the person having the vegetarian dish didn't like risotto, they went for the curried parsnip dish. We queried this and the waitress immediately took it back to the kitchen. She later returned saying that the chef had told her, "No, that's curried Parsnip". We said ok and started to eat, however the dish was now rather cold, so they warmed it up again. On tasting the dish it was obvious that it contained rice, but no parsnips or curry and was now stodgy and overcooked. We complained once more with the same response of, "No, that's curried parsnip". Eventually we were offered a potato and coconut curry, which was very uninspiring and badly presented, so we decided not to stay for a dessert. The waitress did amend the bill for us, but by then It had spoilt the party. Perhaps if we'd asked to see the idiot in the kitchen who can't tell a risotto from curried parsnip, they might have been less forthright in their assertions.

Lovely food, great service. I'm shocked that people are complaining about the pauses during courses, it's amazing food, it should be savoured and enjoyed-not rushed! I very much liked the fact that I didn't feel I was being rushed ready for the next party of diners. I had mushrooms to start, my husband had cod-both were delicious! We both had Sirloin steak with the nicest fries we've ever eaten, and the steak was cooked to our liking, something I'm very fussy about! To finish we had doughnuts and cheese board, both were enjoyed. The only tiny complaint we could make is that the crackers could have been more varied, as the ones with the cheese were not to my husbands taste, but that is in no way against the food served here. Will undoubtedly be back!

At first it was difficult to find but realising it was a hotel along the front near Hastings we spotted it and then had to find a parking space ( tip park in Warrior Square) .As we were late we were worried our booking had gone but the staff were very relaxed and put our minds at rest. Choices for each course were very good and certainly lived up to their description. My partner had a terrine to start very tasty and I had the carbonara as a main. The pasta was cooked just right al dente and the sauce arrived with an egg to mix in - perfect. I shall now recommend it to all our friends.

We went for lunch with the parents for a bit of a treat. Very busy for a mid-week lunch time shows how popular it is. Three of us ate from the lunchtime special menu and one had muscles. Delicious food, great for the older ones who like a smaller portion but left us feeling like we could have done with a bread basket to supplement the smallish portions. None of us wanted wine, but it's included in the lunch menu, the waitress kindly asked the chef it could be swapped for s dessert, no that wasn't possible, we would have quite happily had half portions but no swap allowed. Lovely tiered garden that we will return to. Would also try the evening to see if portions are slightly larger.

We booked to eat here as we were staying at the Zanzibar and the reviews looked pretty good. The restaurant itself has a great feel about it, very relaxing atmosphere, and great decor, but unfortunately the let down was the food itself. I had the jerk chicken to start and was looking forward to some spicy pieces of chicken! Although this arrived as some mini breast fillets that were overcooked and had simply been sprinkled with some very mild jerk seasoning, tasteless and no spice what so ever. The Kimchi was okay, but not the best I have tasted. My wife had the goats cheese, but again wasn't overly wowed by it. For main I had the Duck breast which was a massive disappointment, this arrived well presented, but the taste wasn't good. No flavour, and the fat wasn't rendered down at all, just seared. The breast was also completely raw on the inside, so was very tough to eat. I ended up leaving most of it. I like my meat rare, but not raw. My wife had the Seabass, but again said it was very bland and lacking flavour. The only thing I could say in their favour is they had a very large party in of probably 15 on one table who were served just before us, so the kitchen was probably under a lot of stress. But due to the poor experience we wouldn't eat here again, which is a huge shame because with the right food it could be a great restaurant to compliment the hotel.

We had lunch here with friends this week and found a lot to like about Pier 9, but one big flaw.First the good parts: the decor is relaxing but stylish and it's in a fantastic location just across the road from the sea; if you get a window table you can watch the waves while eating. The food draws from a wide range of influences; for example the lunch menu options included ham hock, mussels, jerk chicken with kimchi, steak burger, fish and chips, chickpea and coconut curry, crispy pork and Thai salad. It's all elegantly presented and there are some nice touches that make even simple dishes interesting; for example the cheese on my burger was grilled Halloumi rather than the usual rubbery cheddar and it was accompanied by truffled chips. If you're a Londoner (which I guess I've reluctantly become after 35 years) the prices seem very reasonable. And now the bad part - the kitchen was really, really, slow. What were they doing? Raising a calf to adulthood before turning it into my burger? Lunch took over 2 hours for only 2 courses without coffee. They certainly weren't busy, only a couple of other tables were occupied. And one other small niggle - why won't they let me add a tip to the credit card charge? I don't always carry cash for a tip; and although the speed was unimpressive our waitress was friendly and deserved something. Bottom line: good food, great value, wonderful location, but don't dine here if you're in a hurry. The food deserves a "very good" rating but the delivery speed was "poor" so I reluctantly settled for "average" overall.

My wife and I recently stayed at the Zanzibar hotel and needless to say we had breakfasts in The hotel restaurant "Pier Nine". We also had two evening meals there. Most hotel restaurants are a second best option to a good local restaurant. Not this one ! It bucks that trend ! This outshines its hotel and is one of the best small restaurants I have been to in this country. The food is outstanding as is the friendly, helpful service. My wife has dietary limitations and the staff (and the chef) did all they could to accommodate them. As for the gluten free bread for her - it was the best gluten free bread she had ever tasted!Well worth a try if you are in the area.

The chef is excellent! I had the fish which was cooked to perfection, and my husband had the pork belly! Absolutely perfect! But the cheesecake was to die for with what was (we think) a granola base and jelly cubes! Not enough words to describe this! We shared as we were full, but wished we had ordered one each!Let's hope he never leaves the Zanzibar! Or gets "poached"!

I am very lucky to be local to this restaurant and it has rapidly found its way onto my "favourites" list!Had a birthday meal with a friend last week. The restaurant area itself is modern and unusual and the garden area at the back has been thoughtfully laid out.As to the food - well once again simply did not disappoint! All or certainly as much as they can is locally sourced. We had a cheeseboard this time and had some amazing local cheeses that I am certainly going to hunt down!Staff courteous and helpful.

I was very pleased when my friends said lets go to eat there because I've never tried before and I was looking forward to do it.The service was nice, but my plaice was very blend. The samphire and that kind of saffron potatoes were nice but the fish itself was very blend.Although the worst come with the dessert, pistachios cake. The cake itself wasn't bad, just needed maybe a cream or something but that cardamom ice cream was Pratically inedible, tastes like a visit to the dentist.I look forward to come again and maybe change idea

The garden looked stunning and the inside stylish if a little tired. There were only 2 waiting staff who where polite and working very hard but this lack of staff meant that drinks were very slow to come out to us and the surrounding tables, usually first drinks arrived with the starters instead of there to be sipped on whilst waiting for the food. The food was presented well however the taste didn't live up to it on the starter front and very unpleasant to find a large piece of inedible intestine in my starter of beef croquettes which put me off eating any of the entire starter. I did point it out to the waitress who appologised but this didn't make up for the loss of my first course. The roast beef main was lovely but we weren't asked if we wanted to see a dessert menu on clearing it. After 20 minutes of watching the 2 waitresses run around serving others we decided not to wait any longer to be offered a dessert menu and so asked for the bill. Over all very disappointing. We wouldn't go back

we had a late lunch here on a Saturday afternoon. It was still busy with a couple of large groups but wew were given a choice of tables (inside and out). The waitress was really helpful and pleasant. I had the club sandwich and my husband had the seabass (which he said was delightful). We were too full for dessert ! The restaurant is beautifully decorated and has great seaviews too

This used to be my favourite local restaurant. I had lunch here last week so disappointing. After all my previous visits, which were always busy, buzzy, relaxing with a good atmosphere. This time very few other diners apart from some in the garden, no atmosphere although the decor is lovely. I had NO IDEA what most of the items on the new lunch menu even mean't, so they went right over my head. Incidentally, I managed top restaurants in Knightsbridge in my previous career. The new menu seems very pretentious to me. The waitress offered "TO EXPLAIN" the meals to me, I declined, I didn't much like the way "help" was offered, I am not a 2 year old child. My meal was very disappointing, only the fish was nice if a bit too much butter, its hard to spoil such a simple dish. The Spinach was bitter and the potatoes were hard, undercooked, inedible. Dessert was nice but miniscule, beautifully presented however. I wonder if the ownership or the Chef (who I believe was previously the owner) has changed. I've always waxed lyrical about this place, it was my place of choice for any kind of special lunch or dinner. Quite a lot of money for a not very enjoyable meal, so Alas no longer my favourite or even close. I was embarrassed having enthused about it beforehand to my dining companion who felt the same her comment "costly for nothing special", very sad no longer special.

Remarkable dinner, not what we expected to find. The room and the cost of it might have been a clue that this was fine dining but we were still surprised. Lovely sea view and charming staff. We were in a hurry unfortunately but the amuse bouche was breathtaking and the seabass in a clam and potato broth one of the best things I have eaten in ages. Perfect blend of flavours and perfect portion size. Only disappointment was that the cheese platter we had asked to be left in the room for our later return did not materialise. Also great breakfast. If you want a giant portion of fish and chops this is not the place for you, but if you want a great dinner go ahead and book.We will be back

The notice board outside Pier 9 declares ' warm welcome & yummy food ' and that's what you get at a very high standard. You feel charmed by sitting at table 1 beside the front window, looking out to sea with a glass of Louis Roederer champagne !!Thank you to Nicole for superb service with a smile. The lunch starter of leek & white garlic veloute , roasted woodland mushroom and crispy leeks was so delicious that I wish I had selected the ' large ' option rather than ' small ' . Pan-roasted sea bass , courgette, spinach & charred onion , matched with Vignerons De Valancay Sauvignon Blanc was worthy of a Michelin star restaurant. My wife and a dear friend praised their spring vegetable risotto. The dessert of Baileys panna cotta was also yummy. An added bonus was parking outside with a hotel permit but otherwise Warrior Square is nearby. Already looking forward to my next visit to this foodie gem !!

We ate here while staying in the amazing hotel. The food was just as amazing - I ordered the fettuccine with asparagus and egg yolk - like a fancy carbonara - while my husband had the plaice with samphire. My pasta was delicious, rich and tasty. Hubby was a bit worried about his fish as he's quite fussy about skin and bones but he was amazed at the flavour combination of the fish, samphire and buttery cocotte spuds. Pudding was fantastic - banana bread with salted caramel and peanut brittle was another brilliant combination. Hubby had the blood orange cheesecake which he demolished at lightning speed! The food felt as luxurious as the hotel yet wasn't too expensive. Wish we lived closer as we'd be there regularly.

I wasn't sure if I would like the food as it is very fancy and not your typical restaurant menu. However, it was to die for. The food was impeccable. Starter, main and dessert were stunning. The restaurant itself is beautifully decorated inside. The service is good, a little slow but there were only 2 staff so it was to be expected. I would highly recommend this restaurant. Although a little pricier than some, it is most definitely worth it.

My husband also absolutely loved his dinner (forgot what the had now!)The look and atmosphere of the restaurant was very pleasant too, we particularly enjoyed the jazz music been played. The staff was friendly and welcoming, and the price was amazingly reasonable, so what more could you ask for?LOVED IT, well done pier9, we will sure be back for more!!

We visited a year ago and pier nine was faultless. Our recent visit for a special occasion was appalling. The service was terrible, soup starter was very tasty but you have to order a side of bread which makes bread and soup £9! Very good creative menu using local ingredients and cooked to order. We were there on a Sunday evening when they have a set menu for £24 - particularly good value for money. Wine list is not extensive, but there is a good range to choose from. We had good service throughout the evening. Set in an old Victorian/Edwardian house, the place has lots of original features and overlooks the sea. Lots of positives, but I found the atmosphere just a bit too sterile. I am sure many people would love the place.A couple of things needing attention. Dining chairs need recovering. Mine had a number of buttons missing. The toilet had only one hand towel for everyone to use - hardly hygienic.

The welcoming, efficient and hard working staff made ourselves and guests feel relaxed and comfortable. Nothing was to much trouble and they thought of everything. Staff were so accommodating in helping to arrange our decorations etc in advance and the service and attention to detail in an already beautiful environment was second to none. I'm sad to say that this was a very different experience than the last time I visited this restaurant and it reflects in such a different review. We decided to have our Mothers Day lunch at Pier Nine as I had had a lovely lunch with a friend a while ago and thought it would be a good choice and as my husband and daughter had not been there hoped they would be impressed.....I booked early and requested a table in the front area of the restaurant for 3pm. When we arrived we were told that there was a bit if a wait, so as we were in no hurry we had a drink while we waited. The problem is there is only 3 bar stools opposite the bar and you are almost in the way and not really a pleasant place for a drink. Also as more diners for the 3pm seating arrived they were sitting outside on the patio as we had the only stools. We eventually got seated at 4pm which was no great shakes but we were seated on 2 small round tables and 2 of us had to sit on the horrible squashy sofa. As we were paying £32 a head for this meal I would not of expected to be sat on such an uncomfortable seat! Come on Pier Nine these sofas should only be used for relaxing with a drink and not for dining. I noticed a little elderly lady on the next table who could hardly reach her food as she was sat on the sofa.....The food arrived and was tasty but quite sparse....no offer of bread....I was embarrassed for my husband as he was hungry and just a small bowl of soup is a bit mean. We have dined at many good restaurants and only 2 weeks ago at The Fat Duck and even there you are offered home made bread!!All in all the food was nice but definitely overpriced for what you got. The main disappointment for us was the you would not of even known it was Mothers Day!! No small gift for the mums....no mention of it from the staff.....Last year we went to The Swan at Chapledown and there was a small gift for mums....come on Pier Nine you need to make the experience for mums more personal!!It would of been nice to of included a coffee in the price as well....Lastly we came to pay the bill and as we had no cash for a tip asked if we could add a tip onto the card bill. We were told not to bother as they do not receive it! Shame on you Pier Nine!!Suffice to say my husband and daughter were not impressed and will not be going there again. Shame as my first lunch there was so nice......

Recently met with a business associate for lunch. We had visited before so new the location to good, airy light room with good spacing between tables. The charming young waitress was attentive, never intrusive and patiently knew when to interrupt our discussions. The menu is short, put together thoughtfully while offering fresh seasonal produce throughout. The Sea-bass was perfectly cooked as was the adapted fish pie, just the right balance of flavour if lacking in just a little seasoning. The wine selection offers good choice, by the glass and well priced. For a lunchtime treat this is the place to dine. I plan to re-visit one evening soon to see if the kitchen can replicate the food or take it to greater level.

The hotel itself is such a little hidden gem the restaurant gives it that extra finishing touch. Cosy understated luxury. Whilst staying at the hotel we treated ourselves to dinner and it was so delicious. I went for the pork belly; the crackling was perfect, the jus was bursting with flavour. My partner had the sirloin which was cooked to perfection; I am often disappointed with steak. The menu is locally sourced as much as possible which is even more reason to indulge and a few wines from local vineyards which is a really nice touch. Sadly we filled up too much on bacon popcorn - must try - so we didn't have dessert however the cheeses look amazing, far from the average selection. Can't wait to return.

We wanted to take friends out for a small intimate birthday meal in the middle of February. I hadn't eaten here inside before. It is quite a small restaurant so it is intimate but the menu was very good and interesting, the wines were delicious (and reasonably priced) and the service was excellent. The quality of the food was also very good indeed. My only gripe was that the Sea Bass was very small and really only a Sea Bass tail. Other than that it was a perfect birthday present for a friend with four of us dining and we all enjoyed the evening. I would highly recommend this venue.
