The Cookhouse Cafe in Hastings

Came here twice for lunch and both occasions came away full and satisfied. The Eggs Benedict were the best we’ve ever tasted and I also tried the Chicken Letcho which was delicious. Food is carefully prepared and served piping hot. The interior is wonderfully quirky and the service by Csaba was attentive and impeccable. See if you can guess the famous hungarians on the wall and you may get a prize! Loved it and will come again if we venture to this part of the world! Well done guys!

Travelled down to st Helens to view properties. Located this venue prior. It looked amazing and had excellent reviews. You will not be disappointed. Advised to book, it's quite understandably very popular. The service, food and coffee were impeccable. Most definitely recommended if you're in the area.

If you’re in Hastings, I definitely recommend you check out this brunch spot. The brunch had everything we were craving. They also had a huge menu for milkshakes - we went for the snickers milkshake and it tasted so delicious! The staff were super friendly and to top it all off, they had cool and quirky decorations, which we loved!

Have eaten here before and the food is ok, but the people that own it are really grumpy and rude. I’d rather eat across the road at Morrisons. Breakfast the same bit without the attitude.

This is a great spot for brunch or lunch! Such a cute cafe, lots of quirky posters and photos on the wall. Food was gorgeous, service very attentive and kind. We had the Eggs Benedict (there are about 20 variations in the theme) but next time I’ll go for one of the Hungarian specialities. Recommended!

I personally find the atmosphere and service often makes the meal and this was definitely the case here with excellent service and a cosy decor. A nice selection of food was on offer which was provided promptly and tasted great. We came across this little gem via trip advisor but have bookmarked it as a place to return to in future.

Could not eat here unfortunately... Small cafe, turned up for brunch Monday morning and it was fully booked? If you want to eat here, call ahead first to see if there is a seat free. Note, front door left open and cold breeze coming in - might want to request a table away from the front door!

Very tasty lunch. Tempted by reading previous reviews and wasn’t disappointed. Loads of choice for all of us and so many items in the menu we hadn’t seen before. Manger very friendly and if we’re ever in the area again we’ll be sure to pop in again. Thoroughly recommended

Twice I have gone to go there but that chain barrier on the door puts me off. So unnecessary.

Visited for breakfast. Initially we were the only two diners and it felt like we were interrupting the owners morning. I have allergies so when I ordered i stated that I needed to make an amendment and I was met with an abrupt and unnecessary 'NO SWAPS'. Ultimately I paid full price for half an English breakfast. The food itself was good but the experience was tainted by grumpy and stuffy service.

Exquisite food, drink and service. The eggs Benedict’s have such brilliant presentation and novel combinations that elevate this place to be my favourite restaurant in Hastings. Excellent breakfasts all round, with so many brilliant authentic European dishes along with the English classics. Huge thanks to the staff here :)

We cannot applaud this place more highly. The service was excellent :so very professional. The waiting staff member was smart and spotlessly clean ( bow tie with crisp, long, gleaming white apron ). The food was presented like a piece of art aswell as being delicious and so filling . Coffee was hot and with a deep , rich flavour. The staff seem so interested in running a superb eatery and are totally committed. They are most keen to have feedback.

A wonderful little shop with a huge breakfast selection and other foods that are unlikely to be found in the UK. Not only delicious but also beautifully arranged. As we all know, the eye is there too. We haven't found anything like this anywhere in England. And not to forget: the extremely friendly owner, who you can tell he loves what he does. So if you're in Hastings, let's go!

I've visited this cafe on numerous occasions now, and so rightly deserve the 5 stars. With every visit, the food has been delicious, that I cannot fault it in anyway. I tend to go for the eggs benedict and the eggs are always cooked perfectly and the presentation shows they have a passion for what they do. The staff are very friendly too, always polite and greeted warmly. This is one cafe I will always recommend to my friends and family, also the decor is amazing too! If you're visiting from afar or even live in the area, I would definitely recommend booking yourself a table.

Bit strange on arrival as had to knock and wait to be let in. However after that was made welcome, and we appeared to be the only ones having lunch. Had mushroom and noodles and chicken topped with cheese and bacon. Food was freshly prepared and tasty. Atmosphere was good and staff friendly and helpful

Really tasty food, vegetarian options. I can recommend langosh and crepe with curd, so delicious! We also enjoyed fermented gherkins and pork perkelt with nokedli. All food is made with passion and love. Also, the "hidden toilet" is the best that I've ever used. It's definitely worth fit to check it out!

Visited in July 2023. We came to Hastings for a long weekend. On our last day, we were looking for a highly rated Brunch spot local to our accommodation. We came across Cookhouse Cafe, it was fairly quiet when we arrived. We promptly greeted and sat to our seats. The decor is very eclectic, full of framed artwork and prints. The cafe was very clean, tidy and welcoming. The menu is very good, with a great range of options, some with a Hungarian twist. We opted for Eggs Benedict - one with Bacon and the other with Mushrooms. Both incredibly delicious, the Hungarian paprika used was a great touch. The juices were freshly squeezed. After we ate, we managed to speak to the owners, who were very interesting, spoke about Food, Google Reviews, London and Budapest life. Highly recommended. Visited here at the weekend due to our hotel breakfast being pretty much non existent! We searched on Google for a cafe and the Cookhouse came up. We drove to the location and parked across the road in the Morrisons carpark. When we arrived the owner came straight to the door to unlock it, have seem some reviews complaining about being locked in but I actually found it quite comforting and safe! Each time someone was at the door, the owner greeted them within seconds. The latte was impressive and a definite talking point with the foam mountain! My husband had an English breakfast which he loved and I had the classic eggs Benedict. I have this every cafe we go to and this was by far one of the best I've tasted, beautifully presented to. Lots of interesting decor around the place, great atmosphere. I really can't fault the place! Also, we were surprised at how reasonably priced it was. Thank you for a lovely breakfast :)

We arrived this morning as a party of 5, we had to wait in the rain for the waiter to open the door as it was locked (even though the shop was open), we were then told we weren’t allowed to sit together even though the restaurant only had one other table of people eating - I asked if we could just add a chair onto the end of one table and the waiter was beyond rude and condescending with his answer - we left because the situation was incredibly uncomfortable, upon leaving we weren’t even allowed to open the door for ourselves and my boyfriend was basically pushed out of the way by the waiter for us to leave! Awful service.

Absolutely fabulous. Food delicious, service first class and excellent value. Our first visit and definitely not our last. Brightened up a very dull morning in Hastings.

The Cookhouse Cafe is a great discovery! The service is impeccable, the food is excellent and the ambience very good with fascinating "quirky" decor. Well worth visiting - and returning!

Fantastic little cafe, food and service are excellent & beautiful quirky details in decor that make the visit worthwhile for the experience. Friendly owners, very tasty coffee & breakfasts, all your usual favourites and some exciting additions on the menu we will definitely be back to try in the future. Great value and good portions, we were very pleased as it was delicious. Warm & cosy atmosphere, interesting steam punk vibe in the decor and was delighted to hear the things you see on the wall the owners have made themselves, so clever! This is truly a Hastings highlight. Excellent service and vibe. Food’s pretty good too. Csaba is very warm and welcoming. We always visit when we are in Hastings and recommend you all do to.

Outrageously unfriendly and unwelcoming. All I wanted was to sit down and see a menu. I was made to stand on the street outside a chain while a rude member of staff held out a QR code that he refused to let me hold in my own hand. Perhaps some outdated covid regulations that this man chose not to explain. He seemed to be actively trying to discourage me from coming in. And I'm 8 months pregnant so I especially didn't appreciate not being welcomed in to sit down.

I eat here whenever I visit Hastings, it is always a pleasure with great and tasty foods in a nice atmosphere. Worth to try all their foods over time to discover something new.

After heading to Hastings before checking into our cabin we decided to break out google to find a spot for breakfast and we’re glad the Cookhouse looked good! The service was impeccable, the facilities were absolutely spotless and the food was amazing!! The owner (apologies I didn’t catch your name) was very attentive, polite and chatty. The cafe is decorated like a boiler room of sorts and it looks fantastic. Quirky but fantastic. You have to go here!! Highly recommended.

To start with the waiter/owner I think was very attentive came straight to the door to let us in. The iced coffee was absolutely spectacular. And the food lived up to them too, we had the bangers eggs Benedict and the chicken schnitzel. Cannot recommend this place enough!

Popped in here as it was suggested by the place we were staying. The hosts couldn’t have been more friendly if they tried and the food?! That was amazing! I loved the ‘sushi’ take on eggs royale. It was definitely the best I’ve ever tasted and only wish that was back in Southampton. The eggs were poached to perfection and the horseradish and pickled ginger complimented it amazingly.

Having been to Cookhouse several times already I would recommend the food and the picturesque lattes. I had however a very disappointing experience this morning. I rang their phone no. via Google Map yesterday and having not received a call or text message back to say they could not accommodate us (2) I made the assumption that we had a table waiting for us However when I got to door, the gentleman who seems to be in charge, had no idea what I was talking about. When I showed him the Google Map listing and the call button leading to a phone no. to ring, which I asked him to confirm was the right one, he told me he didn't know his no, which I find hard to believe. He then went on to tell me with a very talked down attitude (didn't hear sorry once) that a voicemail did not equate a booking and I was expected to try ringing back until I get an answer (why enable voicemail in the first place then 🤷‍♀️ or maybe leave a prompt to say that messages are not retrieved 🤷‍♀️🤷‍♀️). So there you have chaps: nice food but make sure you follow you go through the right hoops as management has peculiar ways.

A very enjoyable experience at The Cookhouse. The service was warm, friendly and highly professional. We all chose the eggs benedict with tomato and basil, which was delicious!!! I will definitely go again when I am next in Hastings. I would highly recommend going here for good food and good service.

3 of Us visited Hastings for a hiking trip a few days ago and with a great luck we found this cafe for our brunch. The place is absolutely fantastic, the interior design is an eye-catching vintage style, the food was heavenly delicious, the detailed presentation and taste ohhh wow...we ordered omlettes and Egg Benedict, they were mouthwateringly good and the pancakes were so yummy too. The menu has a wide selection of dishes. Even the coffees were on a top level. Milk shakes are a must to try. The service is exceptional, the couple who runs the place and prepare everything from scratch really give 100%. If u would like to have an unforgettable memory in a very unique and cozy Cafe don't look any further. Definitely re-visit this place once we are in Hastings again. We called ahead as it’s a small place and luckily they had a table for us. Lovely food (we tried the mushroom Benedict and bangers Benedict) and very friendly service. Would throughly recommend The Cookhouse Cafe- a great experience.

My favourite place. Always a good quality experience with great food and service at affordable price. I like the ambience and the great bohemian view of people passing by as I sit in the window there. Recommended.

Whenever we ask our kids where they want to go they say Cookhouse, and we don't blame them. The breakfasts are great, the Eggs Benedict are fantastic (Salmon is the best!) and the Hungarian dishes are wonderful! Finish with one of the best milkshakes ever in a friendly cafe with its own style is a delight. Highly recommended!

This is a lovely Quirky Cafe with an extensive menu ranging from great breakfasts to Hungarian lunch dishes. Mushroom Paprikash for lunch was gorgeous, creamy and slightly peppery. Can't wait to try out another dish from the fusion type menu. Coffee gorgeous and the owner...

Very strange experience from the cookout this morning, owner locks the door and you have to knock and get confirmation to enter. Once inside he turned us away as was wearing work attire . Do not recommend

A real treat of a cafe, with an impressive and extensive menu filled with Hungarian / European dishes as well as staple British options! We had the goulash and the lambs hearts (amazing flavour) and look forward to exploring the menu further on future visits....

Overpriced. A £10 fryup with 1 egg, 2 bacon, 1 sausage, 2 tinned tomato, some potato bits and beans. Oh yeah a slice of toast, I'm sure locals can see surrounding places are better value and better food tbh. Also the owner paranoid you're going to run off so puts a chain across the door as you're eating and as soon as you stand up to pay he is worryingly about to intercept you, this Cafe use to be decent years ago but now just a joke.
