Don’t believe the poor reviews on here, the place is a gem. Peaceful, lovely garden, full of mature plants and cafe by the river with seating inside and out. Tasty home made cakes. Can’t understand people saying they weren’t given hot water to top up tea, as we ordered a pot every time we went and were given hot water! Lovely staff, can’t do enough for clientele. Will definitely be back.

Husband’s coffee was half a cup, lukewarm and weak. His sausage bun was obviously microwaved and the bread roll was ice cold. My chips were ok but tea was weak and would have been nice to have hot water to top up. Condiments were not on the table and weren’t offered. Staff attitude was service with a frown. Middle aged women who were just going through the motions. Agree the setting is lovely next to the river but food quality and staff attitude could be much better. Garden centre has some lovely plants but the staff there need customer service training too!

It's a while since we've been but this cafe makes the most of it's location and looked to be doing the same for the summer, with more seating on the lawned area in front of the 'shed' bar and some to the side and back by the river. We managed to get a table with shade and ordered from the rather brief menu propped up by the counter hatch. My sandwich was nice and fresh, with a very fresh side salad with it. My partner's scampi and chips was tasty and the chips nice and crisp and the additional salad ordered to go with it again nice and fresh although not too substantial. Everything was ready very quickly - announced by the vibrating order thingy (an unusual bit of tech for such a rural cafe). The staff were constantly busy but friendly and we'll be back again when hopefully the menu will have expanded.

Visit the garden centre many times and the staff are always the same, never a smile or approachable. I asked the female if they had any if the plants on the riverside and whilst she did tell me what the flower was she was so monosyllabic and expressionless when she simply said ‘No’ they didn’t have any. It’s a great little garden centre but won’t be going back, a smile and courteous manner costs nothing, but they have neither!

Despite arriving a few minutes after the deadline for breakfast fare we were served bacon barms - "that's for when we are really busy" we were told about the 11am cut off. A few minutes later a large party of walkers arrived. Would the rules still have been bent?Anyway the barms were adequate as was the coffee - though perhaps we should have been more adventurous and opted for the Whitby crab or scampi, especially as it might have only been caught that morning (or not!).The setting makes up for any shortfall in the average quality. Ducks and their offspring line up to be fed, a brooks babbles by, and the attached garden is delightful if you like that sort of thing. It's all in a beautiful dale, very peaceful apart from the trains passing nearby (though long may they remain).Indoor and outdoor seating too.

We live about half an hour away from Perry’s and it’s my favourite place to meet up with friends. It’s a cafe on the edge of the river with the steam trains running past on the far side. It’s linked to a small garden centre and has a small putting green and croquet area. There is seating inside and out so ideal for all types of weather although it’s not overly warm in April inside or out. There is nothing better than sitting by the river with a nice latte whiling the day away. The cafe does a decent selection of different coffees, tea, soft drinks and some alcohol. The flavoured coffees are particularly nice. I’m also a big fan of the scones with jam and cream. They also sell more substantial meals, sandwiches, chips etc and I’ve never had anything poor. The prices are pretty average. Not cheap but not extortionate. When I’m here I find it’s so easy to relax. The service is also quick and efficient even when they are really busy. Our little dog loves it here and there is seating in the shade for a hot day. There is also usually water available for your dog. They also do a rewards card for drinks so you get one free after buying 9. This is obviously geared towards locals or avid holiday makers that go every day for coffee. The cafe opens usually from the end of March until late September...early October depending on the weather. Probably best to check the website for actual close dates if you are cutting it fine. I really recommend this little gem. Unfortunately from my perspective lots of people have discovered it’s charm so you might find it quite busy in the main holiday season. Either way it remains my favourite place to relax and unwind.

The River Gardens cafe has apparently been there for over a century, though the current building is younger and has a slightly temporary air. Its staying power is due to its great location right beside the River Esk, with around half the tables outside, to get the best river view. It's table service with a couple of waiters bringing your drinks and food to your tabl, even if you are outside. The food itself was fine. The cakes looked great, and the only drawback to a scone, jam and cream was that aerosol whippy cream was used rather than clotted. But the scone was pleasant, and the price reasonable enough. A coffee was also fairly priced, though not outstanding. There's a small croquet lawn, mini golf and garden centre, all of which make it a pleasant place to stop off at if you are walking down the Esk Valley path.

I go here all the time for my plants and really like the place and people who run it but the cafe? Oh dear. I've given it numerous chances and today was the final straw. The location is fabulous by the river and they have plenty of staff working there but it's so disappointing. For the price you pay (£3) for a sausage sandwich, I'd expect something better than a tiny dry bread bun with two minute over cooked sausages in it. No condiments offered. My friends cheese toastie was the blandest of bread with a paltry bit of salad with it. Even the tea and coffee aren't up to much. It could and should be so much better. There are far better places around to go for something to eat, even if they haven't got the view.

An ideal place to spend an hour or two looking/purchasing home grown plants and topping off the visit with a drink and a cake. Because the plants are local the provenance is northern so they tend to be hardier. The on site cafe offers a fair selection of food and drinks. We had a scone with real cream ( not the "squirty" stuff ) and jam and it was delicious. Sit out side, if weather permitting, and enjoy the riverside location with a bonus, if running, of a steam train passing on the nearby Whitby/Pickering line. Try a little putting on the lawn. I visited this lovely little garden centre today for the first time with my parents, they have been before and knew I would like the place, they were not wrong. The grounds are lovely with a croquet lawn and beautiful areas of herbacious borders intersperced with little corners with lovely seats here and there. The quality of the plants on display for sale is excellent and reasonably priced. There is also a gift shop selling good quality gifts to suit all pockets. The icing on the cake , literally, is the wonderful tea rooms and gardens overlooking the river and with a backdrop of a tantalising glimpse of passing steam trains chugging along the North Yorkshire Moors railway. The food is home cooked in a busy little kitchen as are the cakes which when we tried them were delicious. Good range of food on the menu from sandwiches to hot meals, all reasonably priced. A hidden gem close to the village of Sleights in the beautiful North Yorkshire Moors National Park, not to be missed, on a lovely sunny day its the place to be to while away the time.

Visited today and had afternoon tea, sandwich, cream scone and a good size piece of cake £8. Really enjoyable and lovely surroundings by the river. Sandwich was lovely, scone OK ( they used squirty cream and it had started melting but the scone was lovely), cake, almond slice was ok. I have been before and the cake was nicer.....it hasn't put me off visiting again and I would recommend a visit!

We stopped off at this lovely cafe. It's a bit quirky but it has bundles of charm. We sat on the terrace overlooking the river Esk a very calm and tranquil location. Great place for a nice sit and a cup of tea.

We popped in here quite by chance and were delighted with what we found. The lovely, riverside setting is perfect. The cafe could perhaps be described as chalet style or, to be very North Yorkshire about it - a big wooden shed! In addition to the indoor seating there are lots of exterior tables and chairs with views of the river and the gardens. The sandwiches, salads etc are of good quality and, although we didn't try them, the fish and chips looked pretty good too. Orders have to be made at the service hatch, which could be a nuisance during busy times, but thereafter the service was good. Another possible problem during busy periods would be the toilets. Quite simply, one loo each per gender is not really sufficient. In addition to the cafe and garden centre there are also putting and croquet greens, which is a nice touch. There is also a decent little gift shop. Unlike most of the large garden centres, which are more like warehouses these days, this one actually has lovely gardens and, with ample benches to relax in, the overall ambience is more like a pretty little riverside park.As I indicated at the beginning of my review, this delightful place took us completely by surprise. We thoroughly enjoyed our visit and will certainly return.

We found this place by chance and enjoyed a walk round. We decided to revisit before the end of our holiday and chose plants to the value of over £50. We were advised that the garden centre did not accept either debit or credit card which I found surprising but we had enough cash in any event. The woman serving behind the exterior plant desk was rather abrupt in manner and an attempt of a smile or even small talk would have not gone amiss. We felt that our business transaction wasn't appreciated and had I thought faster I would have pretended we had no cash and let her put it all back. It took all the pleasure out of our visit.

We needed to stop for a break whilst visiting the Whitby area and spotted this little Gem. We started by the river having a refreshing tea and fresh cakes, then we just sat beside the river, and then strolled around the lovely garden centre. Lots of parking, with good quality plants, well worth a visit.

Been visiting Perrys for years and always include it on our many trips to Whitby. The whole atmosphere of the place is charming. The setting by the river, now that additional outdoor seating has been included , is a treat. The food is always to a high standard, either for tea and homemade cakes or a light lunch. The style could be described as shabby chic but it works none the less. Highly recommend

I have visited this Garden Centre and Cafe for a number of years. I found a recent visit to the cafe this week disappointing. The crab sandwich bread was very dry and was not at all fresh and the melted cheese on the jacket potato was poor quality and full of oil which was swimming around in the bottom of the bowel. Sitting outside looking at the river is a plus point. I hope the food quality improves by the time I next visit although I will not be rushing back. For the price of the food, I was expecting better.

This cafe is situated within an excellent garden centre and we expected it to be of a similar standard - we were not disappointed!!Starting with morning coffee , we were greeted in a prompt and very friendly manner, and served promptly with very nice coffee. This prompted us to spend the remainder of the morning looking at plants and following helpful advice from Mr Perry, buying quite a lot.Hence when we went for a light lunch,we expected a good standard and in fact it was excellent -( the cafe is managed by Mr Perry's sister). My wife and I both choose quiche with a lovely salad and chips and it was as good a quiche as any we have had anywhere.Since the surroundings are very pleasant, the service in both the centre and the cafe excellent, a pleasant day was had.We will return!!!

If you want somewhere to call on the way to Whitby for coffee and plants, this is the place for you. Fabulous gardens, a little putting green and croquet lawn, plus lots of lovely reasonably priced plants to buy. A nice cafe overlooking the river, sometimes you even get a glimpse of the passing steam train. What more could you ask for. Perfect.

Lovely location on the banks of the River Esk, a couple of miles from Whitby. Based in a lovely plant nursery, selling excellent quality plants, this traditional English Tea Room is one of our favourite places to relax and have a delicious meal! The food quality is always very good, choice to suit all tastes, and quick and friendly service. On a warm Summer day, little can beat sitting around the lovely wooden hut, surrounded by scented blooms and butterflies! The occasional passing steam train adds to the nostalgia, as does the odd rowing boat or canoe below on the river. The food is lovely and potions are very generous. We can highly recommend the Afternoon Tea! Sandwiches, salad, a scone and two pieces of cake with tea or coffee! Yummy!Dogs are welcome everywhere but inside the tea room, there is plenty of parking and some shady spots to get out of the sun!
