Penny Garth Cafe in Richmondshire

Just had a fish and chip tea in the cafe. OMG it was excellent. The fish was the best I’ve had in a very long time. Cooked to perfection. Portion was enormous. Service incredibly friendly and welcoming. Please give it a go if you’re visiting Hawes.

Almost ended up here by chance but a bit of a gem really, traditional cafe style but with vegetarian options. Friendly staff and reasonable portions and choice.

Just came across this place after my wee wander up the backpath of Hawes which I highly recommend...lovely staff and a breakfast fit for a queen...even spread my toast which i love..they must've known I was coming 😂 great value.....def recommend

Outstanding! As a 55 year old "Northern Man" it may not surprise you to learn that I've had a old fair few Bacon Butties/Rolls in my time. The one I had here was the BEST I've ever had in my life! In addition, the service was exceptional, as was the pricing. Thank you!

We had never been to Hawes before, and were pleased to find this cafe. Very clean, with pleasant, efficient staff. There's a good choice of hot drinks - the hot chocolate was very popular - and an extensive menu. Despite it being lunchtime we opted for the Yorkshire Breakfast which was excellent, and great value, even had two slices of toast included. There's a delicious selection of cakes on display and I was impressed when a customer asked if any of them were gluten free and the lady behind the counter could tell him without hesitation which were suitable.

In such a delightful place, Hawes, full of tourists and travellers, we expected more. There are many eateries and other cafes in Hawes, but we chose this place as it had outdoor seating. We wish we hadn't. It was poor. The food was poor and the service was poor. The sandwich came on a white plate, with no garnish at all (see picture). In this day and age there are so many places offering a good quality lunch, even if it is a sandwich, that this place deserves a poor rating. The sandwiches offered were tuna, ham or cheese - uninspiring. We asked for a pot of Yorkshire tea and got a white mug. Poor. We won't be back. They really need to up their game! Also, the young staff would rather have been anywhere else than there. They were miserable and borderline rude.

Found this almost by accident very glad we did. We got a friendly welcome and as it was later in the afternoon it was quiet. The menu was fairly straightforward, which was to our liking. We both ordered burgers, they arrived hot & well presented. We really enjoyed them and will definitely eat here again next time we're up.

As expected, a friendly welcome with a quick chat until more customers arrived...the large cups of tea and coffee welcome after the cold outside, and delicious, freshly made bacon and egg rolls, all at a good price...well worth the visit.

We ordered the full breakfast to take away . Was well worth the money and very tasty . Friendly service and reasonable prices .

This caff is a favourite with bikies and cyclists and does a roaring trade with them. Cooked breakfast of fried eggs, sausages and bacon was ok. But the two waitresses were unsmiling and unfriendly to the point of surliness. The cook who brought out the food was a friendly fellow though.

Very good espresso, below average pastries. Service was average. Indoor and outdoor seating. Outdoor seating was crowded on the day of my visit as folks were enjoying the warm weather.

The owners who actually run the cafe were very helpful ,explaining some of the meals on the menu. Although quite small there was enough space for all the customers. Service was quite quick. It is popular with serious bikers Several came in whilst we were there and were quite amiable. We looked at other places offering lunch and they were very expensive compared to this cafe. It is well worth a visit if you are in Hawes. We enjoyed visiting the cafe.

Delicious cakes and lovely coffee spoilt by the rude girl behind the counter. When asked by my elderly mum if they served sausage rolls she was told to read the menu or look in the cabinets. The girl asked me what I size coffee I wanted and when I asked what sizes they sold she told me to look at the blackboard for the sizes! Appalling customer service.

Visited for full English breakfast. Good quality food and friendly service. There is a Varied menu with lots of options.

We called in between xmas and New Year for brunch. A combination of very wet weather and being popular with bikers made the floor and seats wet. Note that dogs are not allowed. I had a superb bacon and sausage sandwich. A large soft teacake filled with tasty meat. My cappuccino was very weak on first taste, but after a good stir was fine. Total bill for 2 was around £14. It was only open until 3pm - not sure if that is the usual closing time.

We entered the cafe , there was one other person sat at the back My partners sight isn’t brilliant so he picked up the menu which was in the counter to take a closer look The girl behind the counter said “ don’t touch the menu put it back down” surprised at her rudeness I said why what’s wrong with picking up the menu she said “ it needs to be there so everyone can see it” I pointed out we were the only people there and my partner s eyes aren’t great she said “ then I’ll push it closer to you” Weird behaviour extremely rude We left and will not return

Stopped off after a walking morning. Had the oea and ham soup ,brought back memories of childhood ! Goid value friendly staff and the biggest bread roll I've seen in a long time

Called in for a cuppa decided on the chicken fillet Burger, absolutely amazing,well recommended.Try one I'm sure you won't be disappointed.👍

Visited on a Sunday. Got to Hawes at 12pm. The centre was full of motorbikes with the cafe and chippy packed. We did the circular walk so by the time we had finished the cafe was much quieter. We stopped for coffee and cake. For some reason they don't label any of their cakes vegan but when I asked there was a choice of 3. So glad I asked! I went for the cheesecake which was delicious. My partner had the Eccles cake (non vegan) which was equally lovely.

Went in here and ordered our drinks and food. We were with our Assistance Dog Charlie and told to go outside by a very rude young woman on the counter. I told her that on your door you have a sign stating no dogs allowed except Assistance Dogs they took no notice. She called the foriegn manager and he said rather abruptly we had to outside i explained the dog was exempt but again he was totally ignorant. I intend to report this cafe to the appopriate authorities for breaking the law. I tried to explain that he was an approved assistance dog and he was wearing an assistance dog coat. I asked for a full refund and walked out never to return.

Straightforward cafe. Small seating area outside with umbrellas as well. Nice cakes and tray bakes, drinks etc. sensibly priced.

Excellent quality breakfast bun, pannini and teacake. Lively tasting coffee and friendly service. Great for a morning snack. Also brought water for our small dog

First Cafe we came to on entering Hawes. Small canteen like building with plenty of outside seating and interior full of posters and motor cycle memorabillia. Fresh cakes at reasonable prices. Friendly service.

nice cafe o the main road through Hawes, very popular with motorcyclists with ample bike parking outside. although very busy no one appeared to be waiting long. a good range of meals & snacks

Stopped here for tea and cake after going to the Wensleydale Vistor Centre. Drinks were hot and cakes were homemade. Even had homemade diary free cakes! Young lady on the till/counter was very helpful. Would definitely recommend stopping here.

My husband and I (along with our little pup) had a morning coffee here. We say outside with the dog. The coffee a were very hot and lovely. We would highly recommend this coffee shop. 10/10.

Lovely piping hot mug of tea and cake on a cold winter day was just what we needed. Spoilt for choice with the cakes. Four of us all chose different and all delicious.

Really good coffee and a selection of fresh cakes/flapjacks served by a friendly team. The plum crumble cake and the sticky orange chocolate cake were both excellent.

Reading through the reviews we must have been on a ' bad day ' Unfortunately the young women who was serving was so rude with customers before we got chance to be served and then the way we were spoken to was not acceptable so...

Lovely little cafe which we visited during May when it was outdoor seating only. Was just having coffee but couldn't resist ordering a portion of chips and a pasty. Very good prices and friendly service. Lovely coffee too.

We called here on Saturday after our walk in the rain. We managed to get by the outside log burner in the shelter. We had only decided for a hot drink, but after seeing the food we put an order in for a bacon and...

As a biker we travel regular through Hawes and always get dirty looks and abuse from obnoxious residents. However when we see the cafe open we like to stop and grab a brew and something to eat. Prices are a pbit high on some things...

We were fortunate, given the number of eateries in Hawes, to choose Penny Garth for our light meal. We had perfect egg and bacon butties in a large soft bap. No fatty bacon or snotty eggs here! I could not have made it better myself....

We have been here with my girlfriend to get something to eat. We had a really nice pizza and we took some cakes to take away. The cafè is perfect if you want recharge yourself. I really appreciated the attention for cleaning following the Covid guidelines.

Stopped off for a bite to eat. Due to COVID only a take away or outside seating option was available. My daughter ordered Pizza takeway which she said was lovely and I had a couple of bacon rolls with crispy bacon (which is very much a rarity). Would definately stop again if passing through for a quick takeaway service.

We stopped in for supplies on a walk and service was really friendly, no issue filling flasks with hot drinks. Lovely pasty and sausage roll and flapjack to die for!

This is a cute, clean , reasonably priced cafe . The only one that stays open until 9pm on weekends. Has fresh pressed juices, hot food and pizza dinners on select evenings. Friendly staff.parking available right outside

Popped in to the penny Garth cafe for a refreshing drink while we were in Hawes visiting the Wensleydale creamery, service was very swift we just had a delicious hot chocolate but the food and the cakes looked so delicious.

In spite of the weather we got to Hawes and after a very interesting visit to the rope factory and museum we decided to have an early lunch. Called in here and it is very much a cafe but the food cheap, plentiful and delicious. Better still it is served with a smile. Highly recommended

Came for breakfast in January when everywhere else was shut or finished serving by 11am. Breakfast served till 5pm here so no rush to dive out of bed! Proper cafe with no smashed avocado in sight thank goodness! Had delicious poached eggs on granary toast and other family members had big portions of proper grub at great prices, just like you expect in Yorkshire! Frequented by lots of bikers who today were mainly geriatrics! Very busy and definitely come again as be nice to sit outside people watching in beautiful Hawes. After 5pm on Saturday and Sunday also becomes the local pizzeria, cracking find!

Oh my god this took me back 20 years...In a good way! We had sausage, bacon and egg baps and they were epic!! No brioche madness, just lots of good old fashioned, good quality ingredients in a big bap :-) Loved them! Chef was awesome but if being critical the young waitresses were a little unhelpful, we couldn't order drinks when we first arrived and then food without paying separately and no sugar came with the tea or coffee, we had to get up and get it from the counter. I know it sounds a bit petty, but it seemed a bit odd. A bit more of a Yorkshire welcome would have been nice in such a traditional cafe. We will definitely be back for more next time we pass through though. X

Called in for some lunch one day recently,we both opted for the home made lasagne, which came quite promptly,c and was very tasty. Nice cafe, good service.

Not my first visit and have always enjoyed here when passing through Dropped in for lunch whilst on a bike trip, the service was good and very polite although the girls always appear to be busy - my friend had a large bread barn with bacon and I had a super bacon salad which was as good as any restaurant also they have proper coffee not the undrinkable instant rubbish

Went for lunch on a soggy Tuesday. Very good service, we had bacon butty and cheese burger, both very nice and good value. Other meals also looked very tasty and good portions. Would definitely go again

Called in with friends to have a pot of tea for three, we wanted mugs not teacups. This concept challenged the staff as if you want a mug you have a teabag dunked in your mug we wanted our teabags in a pot and pour the tea into the mug. Caused some confusion, one member of staff was not happy with our request and made our visit an uncomfortable one. In addition the quality of tea was poor. We also had an eccles cake which was dry and tasteless. We will not be returning!

Busy place obviously a favourite with bikers, both motor and pedal variety. Basic cafe food but the bacon butty had three large thick rashers on a large butty for under £3 which is good value. The large lattes are large!!

Lovely little cafe, good value for money, and plenty of food. Good choice. Bikers cafe, our son loved checking out the motor bikes. One of the best coffees, and served in a proper mug. Great little gem.

Called here two or three times, what a find!! Food is excellent roadside cafe fare. Great value with friendly staff. I have seen hundreds of motor bikes parked here on a Sunday.

3 meat eaters and one strict Vegan visited here for a couple of days running and sampled various items off the menu All very well prepared and hot and tasty all of us were impressed with the food and good value for a tourist town

Very busy on the day we went. Hundreds of bikes outside. I had sausage egg chips and beans. What a huge plateful arrived at a very reasonable price. Highly recommended! I'll deffinately go back for more!!

Been here a few times but just for coffee and I was watching a few eating burgers and they looked so good so I got one myself and I must say it was amazing and reasonably priced aswell,,I love a burger and often try them at various places and the burger here was definitely up with the best I’ve had especially as the price of it was good aswell,

Perfect little cafe. Really good value for money and portion sizes. More so if you like motorbikes, 90% of the customers are bikers. Just a bit cramped.

We only stopped in for hot drinks and a snack but had a good experience. Staff serving drinks and food were both friendly and provided good service. Hot drinks were all as expected and the carrot cake served was very good, light and tasted delicious.

My grown up daughter and I visited on a busy day and, as usual, was impressed with the service and meal. We both ordered Yorkshire pudding, chips, sausages and gravy, (mine being a vegetarian option).

Had fantastic pizzas here when visiting Hawes with my wife. Freshly made, very tasty and plenty of topping. Coffee also good quality. Staff were all friendly, efficient and helpful. Very good value and would definitely go again if in the area.

Penny Garth Cafe is a great little cafe at the end of the high street. The staff are professional and very friendly and the service is good. There is a good choice of food and drinks and is reasonably priced and excellent value for money. You can sit inside or out and the place is very popular with motorcyclists all year round.

Visited for coffee, had to have some food lovely grub, good value for money, nice friendly staff. Clean and tidy as well.

Visited Hawes several times over recent years. First visit to the Penny Garth Cafe. Visited quite late in the day around 4:30 although they are open until late. The menu is vast. quite a lot to choose from with Breakfast, Sandwiches, Omelettes, Salads, Burgers, Children's Meals, traditional meals and sides. They do have quite a vast range of off menu items in the chilled fridge, sausage roll, cakes etc. I decided to have Sausage roll with chips and beans.and a cold drink. It was fairly quiet on the day 4 other people in the cafe and a couple sitting outside. Food service was quite slow for the time of day but that didn't detract from the taste of the food when it did arrive. Really delicious food the sausage roll tasted fresh and I would hope local sourced. Food was piping hot. After 5PM I believe there is a change of menu to a Pizza menu which features Pizza, Burgers, Chicken and sides.

A little disappointed. Had a Bacon and Egg bap. It would have made a 4 or 5 star review if the Bap had been lighted toasted to give a crispy bite instead of a doughy bite.

We set off in the camper van yesterday I suggested hawes so off we went, the place was packed apart from the car park!

Visited here last week almost by accident! Went into Hawes for a late lunch/early dinner about 3.15pm only to find most of the pubs serving full meals stopped serving at 2.30! Carried on walking to end of Village and came across this place. Not my usual type of eating venue but when I saw they did an all day English breakfast and knowing it was a bikers hangout, I thought it would be good and it was EXCELLENT. Freshly cooked, lots of it and cheap!

We often go into this cafe for a cup of coffee when we visit James to go to the creamery. The cafe is always nice and hot. Staff very helpful and always very polite.

Found the staff very friendly and the food excellent. Great value for money and fast service. Toys freely available to keep the kids entertained. Biker friendly too😊

Visited here recently with my family, all seven of us ordered meals, as I do not like sugary drinks and was quite thirsty after a walk around the village, I decided to order a tapwater with my mail, only to be told it would cost me 50p for the glass of tapwater!

What a lovely, friendly and inviting restaurant. The ambiance was warm and comfortable the moment you walked in. The range of food was very good and the service was very fast. The meal was really generous, I had ham, eggs, chips and peas. The ham was proper ham and really thick and not salty and it came with 2 eggs that you could taste were so fresh and obviously free-range. Generous portion of chips and peas. The chips were really tasty. Was very happy with such a delicious and filling meal. Highly recommended.

I ordered lasagne which was lovely,my wife ordered the tomato soup which she thoroughly enjoyed.My coffee was spot on as was my wife strawberry milkshake.The staff were friendly and welcoming.All in all a pleasant lunch in lovely Hawes.

Went here over New Years, great food (and plenty of it) and great friendly staff. Would not hesitate to go here again and we look forward to stopping by next time on our motorbikes.

A damp Thursday in October that turned out to be the second coming for Noah and his Ark. God did it rain on the way home, wouldn’t liked to have driven in a car in that weather never mind on a motorcycle.

Always seems busy and quite understandably. Good food at a reasonable price. Burgers are good and always plenty of nice cakes available. My only criticisms are that the tables inside are packed very closely together and there is only one unisex toilet, a bit of a pain when its busy, as it often is

We travelled to Hawes on our BMW r1200r and were delighted to eat at this cafe. The portions were excellent and the ham and cheese omelette was the best I have ever tasted. Staff were very helpful and pleasant. I would definitely revisit soon.

Our coffee was OK as in average. It was prepared by trainees who should have been practicing on the owner rather than paying guests. And the waitress in charge was not friendly and it was apparent that she really didnt want to be there.

This was a amazing full English breakfast plate was full and I mean full food was hot service from the girls was polite and friendly even brought the dog a bowl of water out can't wait to go back to try dinner.

I have been visiting the cafe for over five years... it never fails to be clean..welcoming..comfortable.and such good value for money. The breakfast has to be the best i have been served in the country....everything is beautiful and always hot and plentiful....keep up the good work !!!! Well done

I've often passed this cafe as it always looks so busy, but was pleasantly surprised yesterday. Coffee and cakes on our day out cycling were superb. I always have a large latte wherever I go and this was probably the best, biggest and hottest I've ever had. Along with a slice of Bakewell tart I was set up for the next stage of our journey. There was a large choice of cakes and savouries that were equally appealing for another time. Despite being both busy and popular, the service was good and staff very pleasant. This will now become our cycling pit-stop of choice in Hawes.

We always make a point of going to the Penny Garth when in the area. Always a warm welcome and excellent coffee :) attracts a lot of bikers and there are usually bikes parked around the cafe. There's also seating outside with parasols....good for people watching on a nice day. They also have a camera which you can view live online if you wan't to see people coming and going when you get home :) Pretty cool!

My wife and I had spent the day with my brother yomping around the yorkshire dales, starting in hawes, visiting cotter force, hardraw force and returning to hawes for some afternoon food.

After a long walk around Hawes via Hardaw force. We decided to visit Penny Garth Cafe due the reviews on Trip Advisor. Arrived at a busy time and just managed to get a table. Was also a bit off a wait for the food but the games for the kids at the back off the cafe were a good distraction.The food was fantastic, hot, tasty and a huge portion, wasn't disappointed!

My wife and I called for lunch today. It was market day so the cafe was moderately busy. However, the staff were welcoming friendly and very polite. Our meals were freshly cooked and only took about 10 minutes to arrive. We were well impressed with "value for money" at this traditional "bikers café" – double eggs, 3 x sausages, beans with a mountain of chips, plus a large mug of tea all for £7. There's a fairly wide range on the menu, with the opportunity to eat outside (weather permitting). Highly recommended - we'll certainly call again !

I wanted to update my original review, food was great then, even BETTER now. Massive selection of food options, full plates and proper presentation. I look forward to pizza nights, fresh and flavorful and abundant!!

They don't have orange juice, they don't have sparklin water, the eggs in the salad are pickled The outside table is dirty. The waiter is a bit rude , and seems very tired.

Came with family stopped off for tea and cakes, I can say never tasted anything like the Oreo cake before delicious, it was full to the brim, but always is.
