Excellent staff and very helpful. While staying in the area we thought we would call in for a drink, which ended up us having a meal. My husband had a mixed grill and I had a curry, both meals were very good. If we are in the area again, we would definitely return to the Penny Black.

Kath is always so welcoming! She knows her regulars well but also accepts new customers with the same love and respect. She is always happy to go above and beyond and on her days off she is missed by all!

They should train the staff to deal with international customers, I ordered a cut of beef, I asked for it 3/4 and they served it overcooked, it looked like shoe soles, since it was a cheap price I settled for it and I didn't make a complaint, I tried to I asked for a beer, and I didn't get a response, I thought we were close to closing the store, I realized after 15 minutes that someone else was being served one and I asked why he was refusing to serve me one, the employee was very rude and told me I asked him rudely, I felt a lot of discrimination, plus a colleague of his told me that if he refused to serve me she wouldn't either, how difficult it must be to serve a beer, I will never return to this place. unprepared people, horrible experience.

This has to be one of the best weatherspoons. Food is always piping hot. It’s cheap but cheerful but for the oruce you get a good plate full. Vegetarian brunch was really nice. Also love the burgers in here. My main reason for this review is. The ladies on the bar go above and beyond always smiling and checking you’re ok. Nice place to stop for a quick happy lunch

Terrible management kicking people out for making a comment after the table wasn't cleared for 2 hours our table was completely full of glasses and plates, also the tall skinny security guy with the beard the rudest person I ever met he completely don't know how to do his job properly and speak to people in nice way , the other guy that's been on security black person had good manners and tried to solve the problem but we just left it at the end and went to different place, try to avoid this place as the stuff can't control anything when is little bit busy and the management that was on that night she was small size and light hair couldn't really explain to us why we are kicked out and being very rude to us , I think the owner should look into his stuff as is just getting worse and worse

We really enjoyed our experience at this weatherspoons in Bicester so much we went in more than once on our weekend stay 25th Nov its got a friendly atmosphere the staff you can see all work hard in a very busy place there was 6 of us our meals all came out in great timing & we,all enjoyed, great value for money we had mixed grills also had a breakfast also other meals in our stay must mention the waitress polina sorry if not spelt properly she was great. We normally eat at the Lamb inn while in Bicester which is a favourite of ours but very noisy for us wen football is on so weatherspoons was great.

In penny now waited 10mins for my order to be taken I was next in line the female who was serving ignored me and went to serve someone who had just arrived when I pointed this out I was told I wasn't standing close enough to the bar for her to notice me as I was there for 10mins if she was customer aware she would have seen me I was made to feel stupid and unwelcome staff member needs more training table was dirty had to ask for a cloth to clean it and no apology given

This is a typical Wetherspoons, usual good standard of food, friendly service. Strange choice of items of decor for what was once a post office though, knights helmets and tapestries? The place also looks a little tired and could do with a bit of a spruce up. Our table had initials scratched into it and some varnish missing, sand chairs were a little grubby

I had the ham, egg and chips, my sister had the fish, chips and mushy peas. Plenty of food and very tasty. A very nice lunch after a morning of shopping

We’re familiar with many Wetherspoons and in fact have eaten at 2 others in the last 3 weeks but the standards here were significantly lower than elsewhere. One of us had the same meal as previously and the portion here was much smaller. Also the food in general was cold and congealed. However by far the worst aspect was the drinks order. We ordered everything together on the app. Firstly a server came to say that the chosen beer wasn’t available (we made a new selection). Next the food arrived. After we were about a third of the way through the meal and just as one of us got up to complain, one of our drinks arrived with the apology that the other drink was on its way. Next, and now having eaten almost half the meal, the same server came to say that the second choice beer was unavailable. It was several more minutes before the final choice of beer arrived. Disgraceful service. I doubt we’ll come again.

I have spent loads of evenings in the Penny but tonight after being offered a drink by an intoxicated lady I was refused a drink, just because I knew someone who was drunk ,the manager ( Courtney) refused to serve me,I was fully aware of my surroundings and just wanted a drink for the 2 of us ( not the drunk lady) but was refused, I am 53 years of age and never felt so humiliated in all my life.

It's a great pub, love the staff. I had lunch today which was nice and hot. Will be eating again very soon

Gobsmacked! Popped in here (on March 7th at lunchtime) to grab a quick bite to eat. Before ordering, I popped to the Ladies. Was shocked upon exiting cubicle to find a Penny Black male employee hovering around in the ladies loo. It wasn’t obvious what he was doing but he caught my eye, failed to say ‘excuse me’ or ‘I wasn’t aware there was a female using the toilets’..instead, he just stood there and glared at me. The door to the toilets was shut. I can’t remember the last time I felt so uncomfortable. Surely, a male employee entering a women’s toilet should, at the very least, call out upon entering to see if any female is using the loo? Shame on you Penny Black for not training your staff on what is not acceptable behaviour 😡😡😡 Needless to say I didn’t stay and I won’t ever be returning.

Why oh why do we put up with such a disgusting and dirty place. Im surprised someone has not been ill just by sitting at a table. Being asked to clean a table you get, that's not my job. DO NOT use the app for drinks it takes too much time and quicker to go down the road and drink in another pub. If using the app do not except then to arrive quick and you do expect rude staff

I was impressed with the great real ale choice with both Rev James and Sea Fury ales, which are 2 favourites of my wife and myself, available. The pub was clean, staff were friendly. Food was so so, could have been a bit hotter. All in all, an enjoyable visit.

Called in for a quick pint whilst in the town centre, and it was pretty much as I expected, cheap and cheerful.

I visited for breakfast today and it was a good experience. I walked to the bar to place the order and was served immediately. There's unlimited refills on coffee for breakfast so I went for it along with the Traditional breakfast which cost less than £6 overall. The food came out quickly and was decent apart from the baked beans which was too watery for my liking. However I went into have breakfast and the pricing and service was ok. No complaints too so I'd give 3 stars.

We stopped in here while staying in Bicester overnight. 3 of us ate and had a drink and the bill was under 25 quid! Looking on the menu some dishes are just over a fiver WITH almost any drink of your choice. Staggering considering most places would be a fiver or more just for the drink. I was a bit frustrated as I tried to use their app, which seems like a good way of ordering. However you really need to know what you want. The app is NOT a way of browsing a menu. However there were no menus on the table, although subsequently found they have throw-away versions at the bar - doh! The app didn't seem to include the drink for the all-inclusive price, so I ended up ordering from the bar. Also lots of items not available. And even one that was meant to be available was not. So for this reason I ended up ordering from the bar. The food was lovely. It's not haute cuisine, but doesn't pretend to be (and certainly isn't prices as such). Just pub grub, tasty, awesome value and served efficiently. I've come to quite like Bicester. I live near it so it's not exactly a place I think is worth traveling to (not local to me, nor worth a long trip). But it's NOT just premium brand discount stores (I wasn't there for that reason). There's plenty more to see and has gone up in my estimation. The Penny Black is definitely somewhere I'd return to as well.

I use Wetherspoons quite a bit as normally the food and service is reasonably consistent however this is possibly the worst I have been too, for a start we ordered our food via the app and no coffee cups were bought to the table so...

Wife and I are big fans of Spoons, mainly because of their value for money. There are some that are quite spectacular and interesting to walk into each.g.g, Ramsgate, Penny Black is not! It is now aged. Big plus though is toilets are on ground...

Staff are a mess, scruffy don’t look clean and a couple have PO issues as they walked by. Waited about 40 minutes for 2 breakfasts. When it arrived we were pleasantly surprised as it was hit and tasted very good. Good amount of food.

This was one of the archetypal town centre Wetherspoons pubs, nothing special, but sensibly priced, reliable food. We had a very good meal whilst on a long journey across the UK. The service was excellent - friendly, helpful and efficient.

Only really pop in for breakfast every now and again. Friendly service with outside seating at the back. Cheap breakfast is value for money

Absolutely terrible, most of the toilets were out of order and only washed my hands as it didn't feel clean. Such a shame as the meal was lovely.

Had a small breakfast before a long drive home, absolutely delicious, and cheap, ordering very easy on the app, staff very welcoming friendly and helpful, will definitely pay another visit if I'm in the area again.

Came here because they have a large garden where you can eat outside. The service was a bit slow and the food was only average. On the plus side it is inexpensive for both food and drink. To sum up it is cheap and cheerful.

I sat at table 51 and went to the app I selected my food and drink and also filled in the track and trace form online.About 5 minutes after ordering a lady came over and was quite aggressive in her tone of voice "have you seen the signs at the bar", to which I stated that I had just done the track and trace online as I was looking at another table for the code of the pub. She said we have not stock of eggs - I said I had just ordered on the app - to which she replied in a very sarcastic manner "I know, that is why I am telling you".She said "do you want summit else", I was thinking and looking at the menu and she just kept rushing me, saying "you want hash brown or sausage". In the end I said I would have bacon - as she walked off, I was tempted to go to the Sainsburys which was just a minute away and buy some eggs!!!In less than 2 minutes my breakfast arrived (did not seem long enough to me), but I was still awaiting my drink. Eventually she bought it over and just put it on the table, nothing said. I was given ONE extra rasher of baconOn my way out I saw the sign on the bar and took a picture, as now I am not believing what had just happened. The waitress told me they had no stock, now it's a technical issue (frying pan, egg, really??????!?!?!?)The breakfast was edible but not brilliant - with the poor sarcastic and rude service included it will be the last time I "eat out to help out" at Wetherspoons!!!

As a Wetherspoons The Penny Black will get mixed reviews. However, reputation aside we have never had a bad visit. It does what it says it will! There is a lot of space inside and out, a lovely fire in the winter, staff are friendly and drinks and food come in a good selection at incredibly reasonable prices.

A nice pub with good food and wide range of drinks,I visit quite often and find it good.The only down for me is it can get busy and need more staff to cover,I would have given better other wise

I've visited several times for lunch on a Friday. It's usually very busy. There's a reason for that. The food is decent, the portion sizes just right and the prices excellent with a different deal each day. On a Friday we get fish, chips, mushy peas and a curry sauce with a pint of coke twice for 16 quid. A bargain these days.Service is reasonably fast and friendly and the pub itself is clean and tidy and has a good atmosphere.Well worth a visit.

Quite an interesting mix of people at this pub: foreign tourists who’ve come to Bicester for the designer shopping and locals made up of your usual Wetherspoon suspects... old guys drinking ale at 9am and smelling of musky smoke.The Guinness is ice cold and really good here and for £2.25 on a Monday I don’t actually know how it can be £3 cheaper than your average pub. The cooked breakfasts are soooo cheap at £5.35 for a full fry up. Served luke warm where most of it probably sits under hot lamps and is served up quickly when you order as it comes to the table in minutes. Generally very average and the toast is a little soggy and cold. The staff are really friendly and service is fairly standard for a pub like this. I wouldn't touch this place with my worst enemy's bargepole. I've been in three times and each time I was ignored for ten minutes by miserable lethargic staff.

I came to eat at the Penny Black this evening with my son and grandson. The food was great, plentiful and served quickly. The only problem was when I placed the order. Luke took the order and my payment, but instead of giving me my receipt, went off to have a drink in the area to the right of the bar, then when he came back, he went to serve someone else. I had to ask Bryony to print out my receipt.

I love ordering from the table it is so quick. Food ok and good value. Lots of choice the breakfasts are enormous! Coffee good and 8 love the cold water on tap

After work get together. Ordered Burgers, came with six onion rings and a good portion of chips. Price included a drink. One friend had fish and chips, again the portion was a good size and nicely cooked. It's a good place to meet up and reasonably priced.

We turned up for breakfast at around 11am and order 2 large breakfasts and 1 traditional. When it came out the bacon on two plates were warm enough, but on the traditional it was stone cold alongside cold baked beans. The toast was cold as well. The waitress understood our frustration and dealt with it politely, but then when it came back out the bacon was cold again. Surely either the chef or the waitress would check if it was hot before bringing it out! I understand that it is cheaper than cafe's and it is a chain restaurant, but customers are still paying for their food to be hot.The waitress was very polite, but the food was very disappointing and the cuttlery was bought out on the plate, meaning the napkin was already covered in Bean juice before we started. Hopefully this was only a little blip and if we return it will be better.

Big breakfast good value but the bacon and toast were cold.. free water and refillable free coffee once you buy the cup..Good for quick cheap breakfast but could improve

Came in for hot drinks, very busy at lunchtime so tried again in the late afternoon. Two efficient drinks machines with everything you need. Interesting local history facts on the walls. Makes a change you don't have to go upstairs for the gents loo.

Called in for a couple of drinks before going to a nearby restaurant. The place is okay but wouldn’t want to stay in there all night. The drinks are probably the cheapest in town which is great but a definite lack of atmosphere. It does get busy later in the evening but then it does take an age to get served.

Saturday night stopped off in Bicester for a bite and pleased we were with our choice.

Been here twice over the last couple of weeks for lunch and on both occasions have been surprised by how good it is. Fast service, nice food and good drinks. Staff are friendly too. One of the nicer Wetherspoons I've been in.

I visited with my daughters for some pre cinema food, we ordered a plant based burger a vegetable lasagne and some southern fried chicken strips, the burger and lasagne were really delicious as were the chips and fresh salad! My daughter bit into the chicken strips and the texture looked absolutely disgusting, she described it as chewy and stretchy, I took the plate up to the bar and the only person who acknowledged me was the very friendly helpful waitress in a spotty shirt, she apologised and arranged for some more, sadly the texture was still the same. All in all everything else was really good, the prices reasonable, friendly quick service, and MOST of the food was served fresh hot and very tasty but do yourself a favour and avoid those chicken strips.

Called in for drinks in the evening and breakfast next day. Pleasantly surprised at the very good service and the atmosphere which was much better than our previous visit. Usual very good choice of drinks and great value overall.

I called in at lunchtime and as I had been away abroad went for the fish and chip option. I'm so glad I did. The better was crisp not greasy and the fish cooked to perfection. The chips were also chunky and cooked just right again with a lack of grease. All at a price easily met. For a pub restaurant which was well populated, I can see why, service was good. Top marks to the staff. Weatherspoons have a real gem here.

I think your penny black pub in Bicester is one of the very best in Bicester of all the pubs that I know in Bicester the penny black is my favourite pub it's clean it's tidy the people that clean the tables do a very good job but passed after absolutely brilliant and serving you beers and helping you if you need any help with anything on the menu they've got very good selection of beers can I say I'll look reasonable prices and they got brilliant offers on foods on a Thursday evening you get a steak you get curry night there are you buy a pint of beer within meal and you get you pay me when you get a pint of beer free and the drinks are absolutely brilliant now you can book a table if you want to buy 10 not charges 10 to turn up and there's normally a table 3 and have it in there it's so happy and joyful in there

We use Wetherspoon's for a quick lunch. The service is always fast, price is good and the quality very good for the price. The Penny Black was as good as any we have used. The only negative was the carpets looked as though they needed a deep clean

We stopped here on the way back from Bicester Village, it wasn't too busy, lots of tables and a few booths with garden out the back to sit in the sun. There was a big menu with a huge variety of food choices and an advertisement for their app which we used to order food to our table, nice & easy and no queuing! Quick service and the food was a decent size portion. Nice pit stop for dinner & some gin cocktails.

Cheap and cheerful so shouldn’t really complain, went with my grandparents, first was told no poached eggs...only fried. I questioned that surely they could just poach an egg to which they reluctantly agreed. Then ordered the smashed avocado to which they replied “sorry the avocado is still frozen” it was 11am so wasn’t like it was early doors. Ended up with poached egg on toast with the dryest poached eggs ever. My Nan had a bacon sarnie though and said the bacon was good...

Visited here several times over the last week. Always busy but always easy to get served and find a seat. Breakfasts always high standard and 2 coffee machines eased any queues. Evening meals also very good.

Came here last night because they have a good sized outdoor space which was good on a very warm evening. The beer was good and very reasonably priced. What let’s this place down is the amount of time it takes you to get served even when the place is not particularly busy. Surely it would make economic sense to have enough staff on. Would call again but not if busy.

Usually I do not have a problem with Wetherspoon's meals. Cheap and cheerful, BUT in the past year every time we have gone in for breakfast, mine has been almost cold. My partner has the full English and I have gluten free, ,so I guess his takes longer to cook, so mine is always cold. I have kept hoping that this time it would be hot, but I have now given up and we will have to find another venue for breakfast.

It was very busy so my friend ordered the food through the app and it was delivered very quickly! You got what you expect and they do small portions and put the calories on which is excellent.

Normally its a breakfast meeting with family but Ive only once in the many time Ive been to the Penny Black not found it not to my standard and that was soon rectified

Mid range standard of food, cheap and cheerful as commonly described but without the cheer in this case. Staff are not overly friendly or interactive. Not enough variety on the menu, lack of healthy options. And on 3 occasions now no Quinoa

Great place to have a evening meal at the end of your working day as myself working on one of the shops doing a fit out the food is really nice and tuesdays and thursdays being my main nights steak nite and curry nite they also have a great selection of beers to try which gets very tempting at times

Good value and good quality food and drink. Very friendly and helpful staff. IF staying overnight Cattle Market car park best value and you can have you breakfast and walk out throught the back gate to save minutes of walking.

This restaurant in the former old Post Office building has kept many of its old architectural features. This gives it a cosy and atmospheric presence. My wife and I have visited this fine establishment a couple of times, and even when it was very busy the staff bend over backwards to be friendly and helpful. The quality of the food and drink is very good and remarkable value. This fine Wetherspoon restaurant has our stamp of approval.

This was the first time we had visited a Wetherspoons as we are not 'pub' people and eat out in restaurants. However this experience was a real conversion. We were made very welcome, service was pleasant and the food just excellent. We'll certainly be trying to cross off as many Wetherspoons visited over our future travels. We loved reading Tim's comments about Brexit - long may he shout as long as possible on the subject.

Visited on a cold February night for dinner for four. Choice from menu was good and I ordered a burger melt which came with everything. Almost needed a double take, as I thought there were two meals on one plate. Was quite quiet on arrival at 6pm but filled up nearer 7pm. Some of the table tops were a bit sticky, ours ok. Meals served quickly.

Usual spoons deals, hence our visit. The tables were not clean, watching staff it was just a wipe over with a cloth, plates left for too long after people had finished. Bench seating had been recovered at some point but material was not fitted well so was loose.

The pub is nice & relaxed with plenty of space.

Been to the Penny a few times for food and it’s fantastic quick service and friendly staff Kelly needs a special notice as she always has a smile and makes sure everything is okay with meals

The Penny Black is a decent pub with good price drinks and a reasonable interior. Located around a 10 minute walk to Bicester North station, this a good place to go for a cheap drink or if in the area and is solid but not exceptional.

Carrot cake exceptionnel et des burgers savoureux à petit prix. ( environ 5£ avec boisson et frites) .Une carte pour tous les goûts et adaptée à tous. Un pub convivial. Il manquerait peut-être un peu de personnel ( un peu d'attente pour les commandes) . Ne pas hésiter à pousser la porte.

Food was great, yes pub grub! however is was how I had asked for it to be cooked and it was served hot, it was quick served to the table with very pleasant staff serving at both the table & bar.

We gave this an average rating (3) last time- 3 years ago. But this time- we walked in and straight out. What a mess. There were pushchairs everywhere, I nearly got run over by one whose Mum thought I needed to dive headfirst into a table to let her though. The tables had not been touched (dirty) so it was hard to find anywhere to sit down. It was a creche. Maybe that's the place to bring young children, get drunk and allow them to run around near hot food, glass and sharp edges.

Penny Black is part of the Wetherspoon chain of restaurants, so we always know what to expect from the menu. I asked for the bar-b-q chicken as its one of my favourites, but without the bar-b-q sauce. It is supposed to be chicken breast, a layer of bacon and topped with melted cheese. Mine arrived as a piece of chicken with two bits of bacon on top. I sent it back to have the cheese added and it was returned almost immediately with a slice of un-melted processed cheese sat on top. When I spoke to the waitress about it being in need of some heat she apologised, said she' d tell chef and wandered away...without my plate. We gave up trying and decided not to bother going back.

Really nice place, cheap drinks and good food, served by nice and competent guys at your table. The only thing I do not like is that there is no music at all in the place.

Went here for dinner and breakfast. Good choice at breakfast and they can swop food that you don't like for something you do. Unlimited coffee at breakfast and dinner I had fish and chips, very nice and hot, and it included a free drink so I got a gin and tonic, cool huh.

Went there before 6pm in the evening for Tuesday Steak Club that was supposed to be serving this until 11pm and to be told after ordering two sirloin steaks that they only had one left. If we wanted Rump then that would be extra £2 and that Rump was the last one they had. When the Rump came out it wasn’t medium rare but felt we didn’t want to complain as there would be no replacement. Not very happy with the whole meal and staffing not bothered about our experience.Many other customers were not happy either!!!

On my visit I came with 3 friends. I had the chicken wrap, it was completely wrong it was supposed to be southern fried and it was breast, as well as asking for it plain if cane with chilli sauce inside, when asked for the correct meal they bought back still chicken breast, with the chilli still on and had just given me a new wrap! On my friends meal which was all day breakfast she was given frozen chips! When asked for fresh chips they bought the meal back with hot cooked chips but the meal was stone cold! We asked for a refund because the waitress asked “what would you like us to do”!!!

if you go on a day when not over crowded, can get a nice meal, they bring it to the table, but you need to order at the bar. Used to be good price wise, but now going up too fast for what you get.

Always a safe bet for an OK meal at reasonable prices. Popped in there with my wife, son & grandson on Sunday. Just got 3 for a tenner small plate meals but it arrived in 10 minutes, all perfectly cooked & served with a smile & cutlery (not always the case)

The beer garden is excellent for an outdoor summers day with a few friends and pints of cider! (plus the drinks are cheap!)

A typical Weatherspoons, cheap drinks and food and quite good quality considering the price. One of the nicest steaks I've ever had in there was the 14oz Aberdeen Angus. Gets a bit noisy sometimes and attracts a few undesirables but generally good.

Have been in the penny a fee times but today the service was very slow. Ordered via app. Cups for the arrived very fast. But the food took 35 min when we asked the staff where our food was it seemed like I was speaking another laungage . They were not interested. Will take a lot to go back there again

We come here sometimes as we shop in the Sainsbury's nearby and sometimes stop here for a drink/lunch before we go home, I ordered just a portion of chips the other day and couldn't find any salad cream with the sauces (I know, salad cream with chips, but trust me, don't knock it until you try it!) I asked the girl behind the bar and she asked if I meant salad dressing, which they do in pots, so I said no, Heinz salad cream in bottles, and she had absolutely no idea what I was talking about and looked at me as though I was talking a different language.. I found that a bit weird but hey.. It also takes a long time to get served at the bar, even when it's quiet, we seem to be waiting for up to 10 minutes just to be acknowledged.. Still, convenient, with good cheap drinks!

I am a big fan of spoons , so it has to be quite bad for me to write a bad review, in this one sat night for beer only , grt att , good beer , plenty of staff , NO COMPLAINTS. 10 OUT OF 10, Sun Mid morning , what a differnent storey , tables not cleared , not enogh staff , & the breakfasts both had to go back due to burnt items & cold beans, a local said when he saw us take these back " cold food again, its common place in here "& what i could not believe was 1),, no swaps on the breakfast menu !!,,,& ,,, 2 ) & a member of staff the manageress i think sat down talking to a table of locals during her work shift when people were waiting @ the bar , ( VERY BAD !!!! )& in most spoons i have been in if thr is a problem with the food , the manger will come over , oppologise & give you your money back ? none of this happened , jus the server saying,, " i hope it hot this time "

We stopped on our way to Wales on our family holiday. Friendly staff clean tidy pub with period decor. Breakfast came out prompt was freshly cooked and very tasty a pleasure.

I have been a visitor to this pub for almost 16 years. I used to like it a lot- the staff were friendly and the food was good for the price. My last few visits over the past year have made me decide to not go there again. Most of the staff are very unhelpful and borderline rude. On my last visit (very quite mid morning) the bartender looked at me like I ruined his day by being there. He then messed up my food order (ok things happen) and then failed to apologise for the error!. When he brought the food to our table I thought "surely he is going to say sorry"........he dropped the food on the table and walked away without saying anything.

My weekly visit for breakfast and coffee on a Monday But this week fail the nice egg covering the dried up 2nd egg and cold sausages
