Crispy batter, fresh fish, really nice. Good size portions (filled up the biggest of us, but not excessive). Price seemed fair, certainly not the most expensive in town by a long way.

It's expensive, £11 for cod & chips. We had to wait 30 minutes for our food. I wish we'd been warned about that by staff. Cod was soggy. Decent size portion of chips.

We had the haddock and cod. Absolutely fantastic. The fish was so fresh and the batter was light and crispy. The chips were spot on as well. Cooked to perfection. And not greasy at all. One of the best fish and chips I have ever had.

Unfortunately we should had read reviews, battery too thin and soggy, can I suggest some training for the young lads who ruin the good quality fish.

Extremely overpriced fish and chips. We wanted to treat ourselves on our last evening of our holiday so rolled the dice and chose Pengelly Fish and Chips. The chips were overcooked and hard to eat, the half cod and chips was chips with a tiny piece of cod. £29.60 for 3 meals of below average quality, I’d be inclined to go elsewhere. Please check out other latest reviews to see how bad it is.

Worst fish and chips ever. Cod was soggy and greasy. Chips obviously reheats and inedible, just binned them. Even the seagulls weren't interested!! Should have brought them back, but had moved down the town. Obviously haven't sorted out this issue mentioned in a previous review. Low point in our visit to beautiful Port Isaac.

Been here a couple of times now on our trips to Port Isaac, Last year the fish and chips were great. Unfortunately this year they were poor. Chips acceptable but Cod batter was the worst I’ve ever had saggy and oily.

Best cheesy chips i’ve had in a long time! Lots of chips and lots of cheese!! Squid was amazing aswell. The workers were lovely.

Unfortunately, the opening times at Maps are not correct, so we found ourselves in front of closed doors.

This has to be the worst Fish and chips I have ever eaten in my life and I am no spring chick!! The batter was burnt and disgusting, it was greasy, and only covered half the fish, (perhaps this was for the best) the chips were tasteless, dry and totally unedible, £37 down for what has been the worst experience ever. I will never set foot in this place again, and I strongly advise when you read the review you don't either a total let down, and I feel robbed.. daylight robbery I hope the 3 of us are ok, but luckily we couldn't eat much. Update: I contacted the Pengelly fish and chips shop as requested, and they couldn't have been more apologetic, and told me they had changed the oil, and they were looking into the chip situation, they gave me a refund, and asked me if I wanted any food. But I declined as we had been out for lunch. I did say I will use them again next time we are in Port Isaac. Thank you so much for your understanding.

Quite possibly the worst fish and chips I've ever eaten . Not sure what it was I consumed but the fish definitely tasted of nothing and also the chips too , I'm not even sure how that is possible. £25 down the drain and probably a visit to doc Martin later for food poisoning or diahorehea. Avoid like the plague . Actually I think it could have been the plague that killed my fish . I remember the days when you used to go to seaside for good chips . Those days are sadly gone . .

Given wrong order, stone cold curry sauce, dry and rock hard chips, luke warm sausage, fish sparsley covered in overcooked, greasy batter. This place is mediocre and overrated, even the dog turned his nose up at the food, says everything.

Lucky enough that the food was cooked fresh, lovely fish and chips and some good specials. Only downside is there are no pies or anything similar for those that don’t like fish, all I could see was jumbo sausage. But very nice takeaway

Chips refried from leftovers (confirmed by staff ) overpriced very poor and very expensive a real rip 0ff.Port Isaac is so lovely would be nice to have a proper fish and chip shop .We gave a sample of the chips to a local resident who was sitting on our bench and they spat it out

10/09/2023 The chips were really tasty but the service was poor. I was barely acknowledged when I went in and waited for several minutes before being told to wait by the till (I had been waiting by the till). No “good evening” or “can I help you?” - just a monosyllabic grunt to indicate that I could give my order. No “thank you” - just a “wait outside.” Some customer service training wouldn’t go amiss.

We ordered a large chips. It was a small at best.

Very tasty, but fairly small portions of cod. I liked the catch of the day. The service was fairly quick, but few smiles. Quite small place, so not much space to sit.

Haddock and cod were both great. Chips were massive and a good size portion. Homemade tartare sauce was really good.

Great food and the young lads were very polite and professional.

Worst scampi and salt and pepper squid, we couldn’t finish eating it. Was lukewarm and didn’t taste very fresh, also homemade tartare sauce was tart and flavourless.

I got halfway through my fish and chips and thought I need to photograph this as it's so good. Did a phone order, NOT a internet order which was great. We stopped using a chippy that stopped phone orders.

I have a lot of fish and chips all over the country when I travel with work. These have got to be number one or at least in the top 3. Absolutely brilliant. Fish was perfectly cooked with crispy batter and jucy fish. The chips were crisp on the outside and fluffy in the middle. Top marks from me.

I had delicious cod and chips whilst sitting on a bench watching the bay. I kept my eyes alert for seagulls! There's a queue on Fridays as the shop opens from 4 - 8pm.

First time coming here, recommend it so much. The two young lads were amazing and polite and the service was so fast. Had the local haddock and chips, fish was huge and a great portion of chips. Lovely experience would go there again.

The most amazing cheesy chips which were SO generous with the cheese! My partner had the half cod and chips and said how lovely it was and was also very pleased that they did a half cod and chips which isn’t very common! The food was great and we ate it on the beach - couldn’t fault it 🎉

I went here whilst I was visiting Port Isaac for the day, the food was really nice. I had the half cod and chips, the portion size was generous and the food tasted really good- it was piping hot as well. The staff were really friendly and delivered high quality service. All in all I'd highly recommend 👌

After reading the mixed reviews, we were rather hesitant in buying fish and chips from this place. However, we decided to trust the good reviews and go ahead, and we thoroughly enjoyed our meal. We were a little disappointed that there was no haddock or catch of the day on the menu, but settled with cod and chips with mushy peas. It was all good and the portions were generous. The chips were nice and crispy rather than soft and soggy like we've had in other places. The cod was nicely cooked and the mushy peas had flavour. A good experience. I feel a need to add to this review after eating fish and chips in various other places since visiting Pengellys, particularly after eating fish and chips in a Kent establishment on Friday. Let's just say the Kent meal didn't come close in comparison, and I said to my husband, "this meal tells me just how outstanding Pengellys fish and chips were".

Had takeaway fish & chips a couple times during our stay in Port Isaac and were not disappointed. Their cheese fries are the best!

Delishous fish and chips, nicely cooked fresh chips(not frozen) and lightly battered fish , we also had a festive deep fried mince pie what a game changer with a large dollop of Cornish clotted cream. The service was friendly and efficient.

thoroughly enjoyed the fresh haddock and chips. The haddock was truly supreme tasted so good and the crispy batter. Even my wife and daughter who don't typically enjoy fish also agreed it was delicious. The chips were gorgeous; crispy on the outside and fluffy inside. At £12 for the haddock and chips my face did make an involuntary expression but having now experienced the dish and with it supporting local trade, i can justify the cost. MY wife had the fishcake which was also a beautiful dish very tasty with the fish and bacon and smoked flavour. Nom nom nom

Was really looking forward to having fish & chips whilst on holiday at Port Isaac, but was really disappointed 😥, the batter was really overcooked but the fish wasn't cooked, it was wet & haddock is dry when cooked properly, the chips were really dry, sorry but it was a waste of £24.00.

Was advised chip shop had recently changed hands however was excited for fish and chip lunch.. My family had the cod and chips and myself half cod with curry sauce and onion rings.. Pleasant lite shop however the food wasn't overly amazing. Batter was greasy and all 3 fish had hardly any fish in them. Lots more batter to actual cod. Cod didn't taste fresh (walked back to car only about 5 min away). Onion rings were cold as was curry sauce. Disappointing experience

Lovely real chips and each of our fish dishes were lovely. The squid and fish cake with crab, bacon and brie were particularly delicious.

It was fine? I had scampi and chips and my partner had cod and chips, and they were both a little dry - just bog standard really, not great but not terrible. Definitely didn't warrant £10 for either, it seemed like a rip off unless you're getting something really great

Absolutely outstanding - best fish and chips I've had in many, many years. The local-caught haddock was tremendous and the chips (from local-grown Cornish potatoes) were delicious (different but in my view far, far superior to standard chip shop chips). Great value for money, excellent portions, and very friendly and speedy service. Important to mention that each order was being prepared fresh (i.e. the food was not sat under a heat lamp) meaning the batter was perfectly crisp and the fish was succulent. All in all, a brilliant experience from start to finish. Do yourself a favour and pay them a visit!

Stayed in the village a few weeks ago and had a meal from here one evening, my family and I were not fans unfortunately, the chips were very strange (tasted more like a baked piece of potato than a fried one) and not like any chip shop chips we've ever had before. I'm not in the habit of returning take away food and didn't fancy the hike back up the hill from our cottage, so most of it went in the bin and we just didn't go again.

At last Great food cooked to order and friendly staff. .....nothing like the last owners #frozenchips

Good quality fish and chips, shame it took half an hour. This is our second visit to this chippy and it seems they are finding their way in the take away world. They only really offer a simple menu Fish Sausage and chips and never have anything ready to go. This i feel is the main problem with que times. It is a good thing to cook from fresh but people on holiday with 3 hungry kids watching other customers get served first it's frustrating... It is only Fish or Sausage and chips. no frilly bits that are cook to special order..

Stopped by last week after reading good reviews but was very disappointed. Despite visiting around 12.30, the chips seemed old and reheated and the fish portion was very small and not what I expected for £10.

Not sure I understand the poor reviews. The chips are what makes this chippy stand apart, as well as being much cheaper than the pubs by the harbour. Perhaps folks are leaving reviews for the previous owners?

A very nice place with great fish and spectacular chips. The people inside were very nice and even the owner popped out and answered our questions about the place and town. I would definitely go there again.

First of all I have to say it was interesting reading the reviews, particularly the repeated owners idea that a review isn’t valid because the customer didn’t take the fish and chips back. We’re on holiday - thats not going to happen. Thats not really the idea of a review either is it ? Anyway our fish and chips were ok. However for £10 a go, the portions were simply mean. Go to Whitby, try Trenchers, then make your mind up folks. If this is the north/south divide then I know which I prefer. It doesn’t take much to put a bit more on the plate. Perhaps there’s some inflation with input prices and costs ? I don’t know much about the price of potatos, but I do know about monopolies.

Can honestly say I have no idea what the one star reviews were about. Everything was freshly cooked, the haddock wonderful, the batter tasty, the chips good. Sat eating them and watching the sunset. Perfect! "No 82"

Really nice haddock and chips and finished the lot, whereas normally feel bloated half way through. Chips had a really nice crisp to them, not stodgy or oily as often are. Haddock beautiful and locally sourced. Curry sauce yummy. Scampi is wholetail and tartare spot on. Friendly staff as well despite working in extreme heat. See you again soon.

Worst fish and chips ever. The oil needs changing badly. And to the reply, no we didn't bring them back as we were too far away and as if you would of gave us a refund! As for you saying fake news..how come there are others that air a similar opinion! It's not as if you have competition, your the only chippy sadly. It was very disappointing!

Hake and Chips x 3 on a Saturday Afternoom. Even our little baby couldn't get enough. Curry sauce is a winner, it has real flavours that compliment the Hake perfectly. It's not cheap chip shop style curry sauce either. Take no notice of the bitter 1 star reviewers. Pengelly's are serving up fresh locally caught fish. The chips are spot on too. Young lad with the dark curley hair on the till was a real gent too.

Awful. Think the food had spent a long time under heat lamp or in hot cupboard, or even reheated. The food was hot but looked and tasted like it had sat for a long time. For such a picturesque village, and the only F&C shop (takeaway), this was really disappointing, wasn’t cheap either which we prepared for just because of its location, but sorely way off quality.edited to add: having looked through the reviews (afterwards), I see the replies are calling fake news and wondering why people haven’t complained. We wanted to eat them up on the hill overlooking the sea so once back up the hill we didn’t want to go back down.

Just want to add a review here to offer a balanced opinion. We have holidayed in Port Isaac for 5 years now and I think we always will, I love this place and as I type we are sat in the cottage garden having just eaten my Pengally’s takeaway. 5 years ago after a Fisherman’s Friends singalong we called in at this place to get a fish supper, and it was horrific in every way. Both fish and chips were clearly frozen, it all went in the bin and that was the last time I ever entertained this place and I have never set foot in there since! Last night we walked past and straight away I noticed the smell of proper fish and chips, and then noticed the name change. I had a quick look through the window and spotted some lovely orders being prepared so tonight we decided to take the plunge. I am glad I did! Local line caught cod, proper chips (not nasty frozen things) and my wife and I both said its the best fish and chips we have ever had in Cornwall (far better than Rick Steins in Padstow!) The only reason my review isn’t 5 stars is that we also spend a week a year in Whitby and thats always the benchmark for me, but Cornwall is famous for its crab, lobster etc, not fish and chips. Delighted with our food, and we will absolutely be back for another order before we head home. Big thumbs up to the new owner, what a difference and keep going!

I have to agree that this ranks highly amongst the worst fish and chips I've ever had (2nd place). Chips seemed like they were cooked in 3 week old oil and were inedible, haddock was coated in some awful stuff purporting to be batter but could at least be scraped off the small portion of fish (couldn't be accused of being crispy at all). And then my wife told me how much it cost and I felt like I'd been robbed - £11 when most of it went in the bin. Avoid at all costs until they improve. Reply to your response - I certainly was a customer of yours (on the day I put the review up). I did not claim it's 3 week old oil - I meant that's how it tasted. And I did not return them for a refund as that would have been another 30 minute round trip (for the 2nd time that evening) - I should have been able to expect it to be good the first time?

Great that they cook to order, fish batter was fluffy instead of crispy and the chips were probably twice cooked not on purpose, worst chips I've had for a while. For the money they could afford to give a few more chips too. Would happily wait for fresh chips and quality. Will give it another go, everyone deserves a second chance. Update following response from owner I walked home and added the review after eating. I'm not that bothered that I walked all the way back just to inform you of my bad experience. Everyone deserves a second chance, everyone has bad days. I was just giving an honest review as I saw it at the time in question. I will of course speak to you in person next time I come in. I have read through quite a few of the other critical reviews and it would seem that my experience is not on its own. Not sure why you couldn't just accept the negative criticism and use it in a positive way to identify the root cause of an issue and try to resolve it and further your brand and image in the village, instead of resorting to a self-righteous and negative response.

Quite possibly the best chips I’ve ever had… and I don’t say that lightly! I almost never give reviews but I had to rate these chips, so delicious, unusual flavour and cooked very well. Very surprised to see some bad reviews on here?? The mushy peas and curry sauce were also both delicious, I’m not usually one for curry sauce but they had absolutely nailed theirs!

Nice little shop in the heart of Port Isaac with friendly and helpful employees. I stopped in on a drizzly day to enjoy some nice fish and chips ( advertised as the best in the village). I was grateful that for lunch you can get a half portion. Even at that, it was generous and more than I could eat! I sat on the Platt in the rain and ate my fish and chips like a proper Englishwoman... only I'm American! Enjoyed every bite, and shared some with the begging seagulls. My only negative is they charge extra for the ketchup, but it wasn't much. So thankful for the chance to visit such an enchanting village!

Yummy fish and chips. Fish was fresh and it was nice to have the option of buying a smaller portion. Chips were fat and crispy on the outside, soft in the middle. Two nice young men served us. Only criticism is you have to pay 35p for tomato sauce. A bit steep. Would recommend though!

In a town now famed for its fine dining Pengelly’s can feel proud of its role providing perfectly executed fish & chips.
