Three women stood behind the counter took an age to take our order then an age to bring it out. £26 for fish chips chicken nuggets. Don’t offer take away boxes, won’t give take away bags. Disinterested, rude and ignorant. Plenty of good chippies around I would avoid this place like the plague.

Great spot however not so great service. Staff were unsociable when serving and when me and friends tried to sit upstairs a member of staff shouted at us to inform us upstairs was closed. This made me and my friends feel rather embarrassed in-front of other customers. The only benefit was my ice cream.

A friend and I walked here one cold, wet and windy morning, taking her dog for a walk along the esplanade and pier and then inside the Waterloo Tea cafe for brunch. Greeted by a very friendly member of staff, we placed our order and found a table. We both chose the poached eggs on sourdough with spinach and hollandaise sauce. My friend had an Americano with hot milk, I chose the hibiscus tea as it’s my favourite. The bill came to £19, which is a little on the pricey side, but our whole experience was good and positive so i didn’t begrudge paying. We look forward to returning soon.

They catered for the needs of our group of 12 - veggies, gluten frees etc - and every bite was delicious. We had afternoon tea at a very reasonable price. Being seated in the gallery was perfect for our group- much quieter and suited for us all chatting away. There was a huge choice of cakes - all delicious but we were so full after savoury and scones that we decided to box them up, which staff were more than happy to do. All the group were really really happy with everything - often unheard of with big groups! All the food was such a high standard, the venue is beautiful and such accomodating staff. We felt throughly looked after and walked off the cake on the pier afterwards. Can’t recommend highly enough.

We visit Penarth pier regularly with the children and always enjoy. We visited here on Sunday afternoon ( 5/8 ),had a fab stroll on the pier, kids ran about enjoying, and we decided to get ice cream on the way out, wish we hadn’t now! We approached the ice cream seller situated next to our kids favourite old fashioned sweet shop, and were greeted with a very abrupt “yes?!” from the girl serving! After spending almost £9 on all of us she couldn’t even bring herself to even smile or say thank you! She just took the money and served the person next! There was no huge queue of people waiting to be served, so it wasn’t because she was busy, just RUDE!! Oh and after buying screwball ice creams for the children (which, when I was a child always had a bubble gum in the bottom) they got to the end and “no bubble gum!!”

This was the 1st visit since this company took over the resteraunt. We enjoyed our time there. The food was well above a pier standards. Only 2 things that could be improved. 1. We are both diabetic and my wife decided to have a soft drink and the only sugar free was Water. Whilst waiting for our food we counted 6 other people asking for diabetic drinks. 2. My wife has to ride a disability scooter as she cant walk, and I had to keep shifting it because other people kept requesting it to be moved (even to the point 1 lady said it should have been left outside). There is no dedicated space for disabled scooters wheelchairs etc. These 2 points are not complaints just suggestions . Penarth and it's pier are always a delight to visit and in recent times the renovation of the pier is excellent. So finally to try the café in the main part of the building (as opposed to the kiosks on it). It was Friday at the start of a bank holiday and the weather quite chilly so was quiet in Penarth, still food was needed and in we stepped. Is was after what would have been the main lunchtime rush anyway but was very quiet. I have to say the overall impression was exactly brilliant. The range of food seemed limited and displays not tempting to the eye, I am usually torn in these places. We got a seat and it hadn't been cleared including a left over false nail, there were plenty of staff so no excuse. the staff themselves, young and range from pleasant to couldn't be bothered. What we ate were sausage baps and bacon baps, they were ok but nothing to rave over sadly. The whole building seems to be having issues attracting people since it's renovation and it would be a crime if it all failed. Those in charge should get there act together, the café should be a gold mine. It is wonderfully situated and deserves better.

We've been fairly regular visitors in recent years. Sad to say the cafe and adjacent gallery have both been in decline for a while. Last weekend we stopped in for a lunchtime snack and I was struck by the tired decor and dirty windows in the cafe, and empty space in the gallery where there always used to be something on show. The coffee machine was out of order but we pressed on with a pot of tea and a couple of bacon and sun dried tomato sandwiches. When the sandwiches came they actually contained bacon and cheese -not a menu option so it seems likely they had run out of the tomatoes. No attempt to inform us, just served up, hoping we wouldn't notice. Perhaps the staff were too embarrassed to say, given the absence of a working coffee machine. There's no shortage of trade at Penarth Pier so I can only think the current management is incompetent or has stopped trying. A real shame given the great location.

Since the revamp we've visited quite a lot - the cinema is reasonably priced and shows a great selection of films. The cinema is not big, and it's a bit tight looking up at the screen, if you sit in the front row. The pavilion area is used to great effect - different shows and events. It's really lovely and light, with plenty of space. This is a great venue for a wedding, which they do host here now. The cafe is nice, not cheap but lovely things to choose from. It's a bit cramped and it's difficult to get a table, due to how popular it is. The actual pier is really well preserved and great for photos and a nice relaxing walk. People fish from the end of the pier, and we've caught the waverly from the end. Definitely sign up for the email listings to keep in touch with everything that is going on.

However we were pleasantly greeted and generally happy with the food (hearty soup & bread; bacon & egg or sausage or whatever sandwiches; etc) and with the good coffee, all at reasonable prices. I advise you NOT to dine at this venue, unless you have time on your hands. Our first experience with three grandchildren for a light lunch a few months back, resulted in a 1hr 20 minute visit. The second on 27/10/16 was little better and many diners were complaining about the exceptionally slow service and lack of any apparent organisation at front of house or in the kitchen.Another customer and I counted five young people "in charge" of orders. cooking and delivery to table,Whilst 5 of us formed an orderly queue to place lunch orders, it appeared that 2 were involved with making coffees and one making a pot of tea. No attention given to the growing queue what so ever. When we eventually got our meal, we had to ask for knives and forks.Prices - rediculous! £2:75 for a small bottle of Rose lemonade for the children. £9 for three childrens cheese toasties! 1 Panini, 1 bacon bap 1 coffee and our bill was 15 pence short of £25!There are other lovely restaurants and cafes along the front which are far better value. This one needs to have a time and motion study and prices need to be far more family friendly. Last visit for us after two similar experiences.

The pier is situated approximately two miles from Cardiff city centre and what a pleasant place to relax and watch the world go by. We tried the chips and fish at the aptly named pier cafe and it was very nice indeed with a five star hygiene rating also all flavour of ice cream if needed. To sit down on the pier with your fish and chips on a sunny day nothing better. This place is to relax their are no side shows if you are in the mood a first class restaurant right near the pier however I did not eat there myself. Parking is restricted to two hours maximum and no return in two hours and it is limited. However, there is parking up cliff parade with no restrictions but rather steep hill. Cardiff bus do run bus service to the pier so if you can suggest you catch the bus on a sunny warm day as you may encounter parking issues or be prepared for a walk to the pier itself as you will probably want to spend more than two hours there.

The huge investment into this pier has produced an excellent building - a great exhibition space , a mini cinema and the potential for a superb cafe. However the cafe has always been a big let down -desperately slow service and a very limited menu on our previous visits .On our last visit on a sunny afternoon we decided to give the cafe another chance. There was no menu of snacks displayed anywhere, on the walls or any tables inside and out- we did a thorough search! On asking for a menu of hot snacks the young server (with a reluctance that was all too obvious) produced a crumpled stained menu from under the counter. 20 minutes later some burnt paninis and coffee which was lightly stained warm water arrived. The young servers in the kitchen area spent most of the preparation time laughing and giggling about about some in-jokes - great to have happy staff - but get the service right first. This is a perfect way to destroy a business. Please take note - employment is a precious in these troubled times and you have a great asset in this cafe. With a little more imagination and commitment this could be a great facility.

We were quite looking forward to eating at the Pier cafe, however, when we got in the cafe we struggled to find a menu, there was just one copy of the menu circulating so we had to wait our turn to look at it. There wasn't much to choose from so we chose sausage sandwiches. What came was very disappointing - two pale looking sausages that I suspect were microwaved in a stale buttered bun. We love having breakfast out and it's been a while since we that disappointed. In such a wonderful setting in Penarth we expected a lot better. One plus side was that the coffee was ok, not enough to make us go back though.

My partner and I have visited the Pavilion several times. Each time we visited the service was always very slow. The food when it did arrive was ok, nothing special. We visited there again on the Bank Holiday despite my earlier reservations. This time the wait was even longer. 45 mins for a sandwich and a panini. They had obviously underestimated the custom a warm bank holiday would bring and it really showed. We noticed customers buying chips from the cafe further down the Pavilion whilst they waited for their food. It is a shame as it is a lovely cafe with excellent views but is let down by the lack of organisation.

Visiting our friends in South Wales, we demanded an afternoon at the beach - especially considering the weather was great. Barry and Penarth were the offers - the traffic was bad getting to Barry so Penarth it was. Parking around the esplanade was quite difficult so we had to park up the hill away from the sea front. But a pleasant afternoon was spent strolling up and down the esplanade and the pier pavilion. We got ourselves an ice cream and soaked up the May sunshine. Great for couples and small groups of friends not so great for families with kids as there's very little to do there for them unless the tide is out and the sea gets a bit warmer.

Hop on a boat for a trip across the bay (or walk across Cardiff bay barrage if you're feeling energetic)! To Penarth. This is an attractive seaside suburb complete with modern marina. Took a stroll on the historic pier (voted pier of the year 2014!

This place is perfectly located on the pier itself.the menu is very affordable, don't expect 5 star service it's a simple place with simple basic menu offering panninis, on a busy day expect them to run out of ingredients. I also had scones with jam and clotted cream. It's not fresh but for what you pay you simple will be crazy to complain. It's certainly my new daytime chill zone. Coffee maker is quite loud so not quiet unless you sit upstairs.

This little cafe has many things to potentially recommend it - fantastic views of the sea, modern, clean interior, interestingly designed building both inside and out. The cakes are delicious (we had a great millionaire's shortbread and a blueberry bakewell tart), and good coffee. However, the service was incredibly slow - we queued for probably at least 20-25 minutes at the counter to place our order (on the Easter Bank holiday weekend, when you might hope the cafe had planned for some visitors), despite only a short queue of people in front of us, and it was clear that the one member of staff had no idea how to efficiently serve people. For example, instead of putting the coffee on to brew first, then sorting out the cakes orders while the coffee was dripping through the machine, he first assembled the cakes, then he had to stand around waiting for the coffee to drip through. This is pretty basic stuff and obvious even if you have no customer service experience! There was only one staff member on the counter and because he also had to take the cash, each person's order took forever to process. Please sort out this slow service - if this was fixed, I would have given the cafe five out of five!

The first time we visited Penarth Pier, we were impressed with everything except for the café. Although there were beautiful views from our seat, it didn't compensate for the fact that we waited over an hour for two sandwiches and two coffees, even though there were only 3 others in the whole café. When our food eventually did come, it went to someone else, who I can only assume had been waiting too, and was willing to accept a different order. The staff were very young, and very apologetic and brought out some free chips, which were nice, and the actual food was also of high quality. The pier itself was filled with little shops, which were nice, and the views were good even on a rainy day. I especially loved the little old fashioned sweet shop. The man running it was very friendly, and the sweets were fabulous. The art gallerys were also interesting have a quick look around. There is close parking along the sea front.

After a long wait we finally ordered three coffees. Repeated the order three times and they were still made incorrectly and then billed incorrectly. The amount charged wasn't right for the coffees ordered or the coffees made. What really made the visit warrant zero stars was the surly male member of staff who looked to the heavens when he realised he had to take two bacon rolls upstairs, as it he had been asked to serve at Everest Base Camp; the lady behind the counter who spent the entire time chatting to the "resort management" council worker perched at the end of the counter; and finally when he asked about stew, she happily tells him, in front of us and others, that they don't do it anymore. They just do paninis and stuff but none of it is home made and it's all s...t. Despite the location - avoid at all costs. Even the staff think it's s...t!

Little happening on the actual pier itself. Nowhere to get the standard pier fish and chips. However everyone must visit Ye Olde Sweet Shop on the entrance of the pier. A great find and true seaside speciality. The gentlemen in there is lovely and really friendly. All the sweets in are really reasonably priced.

A lovely location... but, an very poor service and always a long wait. Mismanaged to the point where customers walk out because they can't even place and order and get service. Staff can't handle orders quickly or efficiently. Simple food like a panini takes over 25mins to prepare and serve, then they can't bring two meals the same out at the same time. A very poor service someone needs a good rocket up them and a lesson on customer service and hospitality.

Having visited multiple times, mostly due to its location and it being indoors (as opposed to food outlets on the pier) the cafe unfortunately needs to up its game. The first visit was lovely, the second visit was a busy day and the food, whilst tasty was cold. We did complain, despite eating it and were told there were staffing issues and apologies were made and an offer of a refund. We declined the refund due to the effort made to address our concerns, but on two further visits we have encountered problems. On the latest visit, we were served burnt (blackened) teacakes and they weren't even nice teacakes. They were huge, but lacked flavour and fruit. I didn't complain as it was getting busy and didn't want to wait any longer and clearly the staff thought they were acceptable to serve. On a positive note, the toast and sausage bap was apparently tasty. It's a real shame as the staff were actually friendly and the location is lovely. It's fantastic to see the building restored properly.

You get through to the caff via a display of paintings. I must say the building is a fantastic bit of renovation and splendid architecture. It was rather packed and we struggled to find a seat and we only had a coffee so can't comment really on some of the things noted here. Plus points- amazing location, amazing views and very individual. Yeah a bit chaotic but I liked it a lot and will certainly return outside of half term to make a better judgement.

Great location but poor management means chaos. Everyone it seems is trying to do everything with no apparent clear lines of responsibility. This results in a wait for coffee that is far too long and the tea cake arriving after you have finished your coffee. And it was not particularly busy! Such a shame as it could be a great little cafe with a little more organisation, effort and interest in getting things right.

Just dropped in for a coffee. My wife and I have been here on several occasions before as its location on Penarth Pier with views over the Bristol Channel is superb.Previously the food has been OK even if the service has never been great bt the location made up for it to a certain extent. However not this time. I ordered a scone, which previously have been lovely great big home-made ones, only to be presented with a cheap nasty tasteless example form some supermarket's "value" range. I also ordered an Americano and a Camomile Tea. What I got was a half full (not very large) mug of coffee and a Caramel Latte!!!!! No. This is not good enough!!To add to the annoyance when I enquired whether the balcony upstairs was open, I was told that it was now "a temporary office"!!

My wife and I visited on a Wednesday lunchtime. The place was busy and we were told there was a twenty minute wait for panninis. We accepted this, paid and sat at a table.Forty minutes later the order arrived.I had asked a waitress after thirty minutes about our order and was told they were busy and please be patient. Our patience was stretched to the limit by a ridiculous time estimate that was in fact doubled!Visit the place by all means but when you're told how long your food will be multiply by two!

Despite being the only customers in the cafe and there being 5 people who worked there standing around the counter talking, we were completely ignored. We tried to engage in conversation but it was as though we were invisible. To hear the boss say she was worried about putting the TV on for the rugby in case it brought in too many customers summed up their attitude to having clientele. We ended up walking out and going to Nicola's on the pier where we got a warm welcome.

Such a great venue which could be a lovely place to enjoy a coffee and snack. However both times we've visited we've been very frustrated by the length of time placing an order and waiting for it to arrive. An experienced company to run this cafe is what is needed here as the present team are clueless. We won't be visiting again unless this happens.
