Unfortunately this was not a good experience, this must have been one of the worst meals I have had in a long time, only ones in restaurant so atmosphere poor to say the least, only one member of staff who done everything from service to cooking, which was not great, decor so shabby paper coming off the walls ,strange smell and tablecloths discoloured and holed to the point of needing replacing, someone on a previous comment said 1970 decor, think they was right and that's the last time it was decorated. This is a place I will not be going back to or could ever recommend to anyone thinking of going there, ultimately my advise pick somewhere else, Gravesend must have better places.

Absolutely fabulous food and service. Love this place. Authentic 70s decor. A real gem. Hard to find unless you know where it is. Upstairs close to the Methodist church. Give it a try. You’ll love it I’m sure. Duck is to die for!

I've been coming here most of my life and never wrote a review so now it's time. We always come here for special occasions and that's for a reason. The Peking is a small family run restaurant which is tucked away with the entrance door between two shops. If you like a traditional 'proper' restaurant this is the place. The food is outstanding and so is the service. We had planned to take some photos of the food when we visited the other night but we kept forgetting and got stuck into each course before it was too late! I can honestly say I don't remember having a dish from the Peking which I didn't like. We usually have mixed horderves to start followed by crispy duck with plum sauce, pancakes etc then pick a few dishes for our main. We tried a seafood sizzling platter for a change which was amazing and served very sizzling! I have noticed when the sizzling platters are served they always turn heads from other diners and they will end up getting one! The table service has always been excellent and it's somewhere you can relax, have a few drinks and not be rushed therefore we will usually have our starters and duck, then pick what dishes we feel we want for our main meal which has never been a problem. We are usually too full to have dessert as we were the other night! but in the past when we have, again it's always been good especially the hot toffee apples seem to stand out in my memory. We have so many good memories of this place. I visited the restaurant with my parents on special occasions as a child, I visited in my teens, 20s and now I'm 35 and still coming back, sometimes with my children so that really does say something for the place! The restaurant has kept its traditional charm and decor inside which we love. Its the little touches that make this place special and it really must be tried to be appreciated as there are sadly not many places about like this anymore. Keep up the good work and see you next time!

This was against the norm... I've always felt rushed at Chinese restaurants. One in one out as quick as possible. But the waitress always asked if we'd like more time between courses and was so nice! Between the courses we had hot flannels to wipe our hands with, the plates were heated as well... so many little touches that made the experience so nice. The food was also absolutely first class as well. Yes the decor may be a little outdated but personally for me it made the whole experience more authentic. Gravesend is very lucky to have such a lovely restaurant.

Im oberen Stock gelegen. Sehr freundlicher Empfang.

I have eaten at the Peking several times and I was concerned when ownership changed hands. However I need not have worried as it was taken over by a member of staff who continued the excellent service previously offered. The only drawback is the steep stairs to this first floor restaurant but it’s well worth the effort.

This is one of the best Chinese restaurants around, with fantastic quality food and service. We spent NYE here and had one of the Special Set Menus. There were four of us and it catered for everyone. The starters and duck courses were very good and the mains were really great, with chicken, pork and prawn dishes. Each one was cooked to a really high standard. The owners are a fantastic couple who always make you so welcome. Definitely worth a visit.

MORE AT TripAdvisor

This restaurant is said to be the longest running in Kent, being established in its present form in 1972, However, it’s history as a Chinese restaurant goes earlier than that as I recall going to it in the sixties (some 50 years ago) when it was called The Oyster (under different ownership) so it’s certainly got some history. Although not a regular I have used it numerous times on and off since those days and always enjoyed it. The main drawback is that the entrance is through an unobtrusive doorway and up a fairly long flight of steep stairs, so it is not really suited to those with mobility problems (and also means that you can’t see in to assess it from the outside). However, after climbing the stairs (not as young as when it was ‘The Oyster’!) we were given a friendly welcome and ushered into the comfortable interior which is tastefully decorated and projects a warm and cosy ambience in traditional style (white tables clothes, carpeted floor etc. as against the more contemporary modern furnishings) and doesn’t seem to have changed very much in all the years it’s been there. Part of the charm I think, and I completely agree with the opening comment of the previous reviewer who said that “there's something very endearing about this restaurant - slightly old fashioned but with a real honest feel.” The soft background music was late 50’s rock ‘n’ roll classics, which added to the feeling of nostalgia (for us older customers, anyway!) The main dining room is not that large (about 10 tables, including a round table for groups) but comfortably furnished, and I believe there are a couple of other rooms that could be used if busy or take a party/group booking. The menu is an extensive list of all the usual dishes. Complimentary prawn crackers were given at the start while looking at the menu, and all the dishes we ordered were very good, although I found the soft shelled crab starter to be very salty (but to be fair the menu does warn that it is prepared in a spicy salt). We thought it was very reasonably priced compared with other places for the style of restaurant and quality of food. For example, most dishes, with the exception of King Prawn and Fillet Steak dishes, are less than £6, and the others only a little more It’s difficult to compare value with the ‘eat as much as you like’ Chinese restaurants, but it was good value for what we had and much less expensive than the other main a la carte Chinese in Windmill Street (and much better too!). The service was attentive and friendly (although there were only a few other tables taken on a mid-week evening so I can’t speak for when it might be crowded) and all in all we enjoyed a very good Chinese meal in a nice atmosphere. We’ll certainly continue to use it all the time our legs can carry us up those stairs! On more practical matters that might be helpful, there is no street parking outside or in the immediate vicinity, which means using one of the public car parks (free after 6), although the nearest is only some five minutes’ walk or so away depending on how fast you walk. It does not provide a take-away delivery service (although I believe you can order and collect) and it is closed on Sunday.

There's something very endearing about this restaurant. slightly old fashioned but with a real honest feel. the food is above average for sure, but not quite very good. I had salt and pepper squid. Huge pieces of squid meant it kept tender and had delicious garlic and spring onion with it. Again, a really honest dish without being quite first rate. the squid could have been slightly smaller and the batter slightly less oily. For the main I had satay chicken which could have been spicier and a large shape wheat noodle dish i can't remember the name of (i don't remember seeing it on a menu before) but would recommend. Chinese tea was delicious, prices very good, service as friendly as you can imagine and overall would happily visit again. So without the food being first rate i can happily recommend

We visited the Peking last night for a friends birthday. It started with trying to lug a pushchair up a steep flight of stairs which smelt strongly of urine. Thankfully we have nice friends to help while staff watched us struggle. My friend had booked a room for 21 guests but there were only 19 spaces set out so some people had to squeeze. They had provided a highchair for my son but it was filthy. Thank god for wipes. We had to clean this ourselves. We sat down at half 6 and ordered drinks which didn't arrive for half an hour. The food was OK but nothing amazing and there wasn't enough for a table of 7. The vegetarians were told where to sit by the waiter regardless of what our friend wanted. All in all we didn't leave until around half 11. I have never known a meal to take 5 hours! With about an hour between courses. I only gave this a two because the food was edible and some was quite tasty, all be it very overpriced. My wife and I are not in a rush to return.

Determined not to be put off, we were shown to our table. We ordered soft drinks, a small glass, poured from a two litre bottle and charged at £2.10 each. Our starters were basic at best. Main course; vegetables were tasteless and rubbery. Beef; chewy and poor quality. This resturant has been going for over 40 years, and looks it! But at the end of the day, we would have forgiven that, had we been pleased with the food.We were looking forward to a tasty, delicious meal and quickly left, bitterly disappointed, never to return.

We were originally on our way to an Italian when this place caught our eye. Up a beautifully decorated set of stairs to the restaurant we were immediately sat and menus and drinks were served. A lovely man who I think may be the owner made sure we were set for the meal. While ordering the food he gave us recommendations on what was good with our choice and what would be better. This was greatly appreciated, and brilliant service. Prawn crackers were brought over like all other restaurants. Which we did demolished. The food was lovely, I had the squid with chilli salt with made my mouth water it was delicious and my boyfriend had beef in rice paper which we thoroughly enjoyed the mains were served shortly after and were sooo good because we enjoyed our evening so much we stayed for desert which is very rare. This place has been trading for over thirty years and I have been eating here for 32 years, although now run by another proprietor it's still very nice and service is good. It's a bit dated with the decor but still nice.

Not much of an entrance with dated decor, but head on up the stairs and you'll find a great restaurant. Great quality, good value, well priced food without lashings of MSG, family friendly, fab service and hot towels between each course are a bonus. Yum :)

Went to the Peking with a group of friends for somewhere different, on a recommendation from a group member. Its on a scruffy street and you enter the restaurant up quite a few stairs, the restaurant is split into 2 rooms. We had a room to ourselves in the front overlooking the street. The waiter suggested we had a set meal for£18 per head, everybody agreed to this and after a wait the food started to arrive. The usual Prawn Crackers came first followed by Crispy Duck and pancakes. Then a succession of dishes including rice and noodles, seafood, chicken etc.The decor looked like it had been the same since the 70's, red walls wiith chinese paintings and artiacts. The music a blessing it was English turned down pretty low.The service was OK nothing to write home about, the waiter was very keen to get everybody to drink the warm Saki, we found out when we came to the bill later. The bill, £35 a head. I have better chinese meals with drinks for less than thia. Will I be going back, not in this lifetime.

After a day trip to France we decided to stop on the way home for a meal at the Peking. This was to celebrate my and my brothers birthdays which are only a few days apart and I would be away for both events.Therein is the slight problem, my Brother doesn't enjoy Chinese food much, he always claims it is tasteless. I knew that is I could make him change his mind this was the place to do it. And I was right! He eventually admitted that he enjoyed everything he ate, the others in our party loved the food as well, everything we ordered was so good and service as always was excellent. If there is one thing that I can say about how good the food is it must be that the precious owners came in for a meal while we were there. They retired 4 years ago passing the business to their head waiter and his wife. They came in as they had a busy day and didn't want to cook! For a couple that ran the place successfully for nearly 40 years this is the ultimate rubber stamp to the new owners,It is well worth the effort of the climb up the stairs to a jewel of a restaurant that is also very good value for money.

You wouldn't think from the road that it's worth going up the stairs but sadly if you didn't bother you would have missed out on a absolute gem of a restaurant. The food is amazing, the couple that run it are the nicest people in the world and couldn't do enough for you. I've moved away from the area now (mid Kent) but still travel up just to visit.... That's how good it is!!

Tried the Peking after work one evening and as I have not been here for a few years thought I give it a try to see if anything has changed.Ordered a prawn with chilli and some chow mein, the prawns were so hot that I only ate half of them, chow mein was good and of a nice portion. Not sure if I will come back again as it was simply average.

One of my favourite restaurants in Gravesend. We have been going here for the last 15 years but it has been open since 1973.It is a warm and inviting atmosphere in the centre of Gravesend. The food is always excellent and very reasonably priced. The owners are great fun and always make you feel welcome. Our last visit was Valentines night with a great deal - set menu for £22 per person. Can't recommend this place enough.

The food is always amazing, we're friends with the owners and we come on every special occasion. They're always accommodating and friendly, and the food never fails to impress me, and I never leave unsatisfied. I would recommend this place to everyone who enjoys good Chinese food. The entrance and stairwell are not overly impressive but the restaurant itself is lovely and decked out in Chinese decorations, it has a wonderful atmospher, so do not be put off! You will not be disappointed if you come here.

We ordered a takeaway from the Peking Restaurant on New Years Eve. I arranged to collect it and it was all packed and ready wine I arrived. The proprietor was efficient and helpful and served me straight away. We recieved a complimentary bottle of wine with our takeaway. Our meal was of very generous portions hot and very tasty. It was very reasonably priced. Whilst collecting my meal I noticed that the restaurant was nicely decorated, clean and quite busy. A sit down meal is on the cards in the new year

Went here for only the second time to meet up with visiting relatives on a November Saturday evening. The restaurant was more or less full with a good atmosphere. There were 5 people on our table and we had one of the set dinners, which I thought was excellent value for money and provided plenty of variety and was more than enough for even the greediest amongst us! Liked the decor - traditional red plush sort of thing with the hanging lanterns but not too tacky at all - and the tables were reasonably spaced and the service was good, friendly and attentive but not overly obtrusive. We had both red and white wine and I thought both were very drinkable and reasonably priced, followed by liquers and brandy, all very well presented. Over the years I must have eaten in hundreds of Chinese restaurants around the country but this was definitely one of the better ones - a real find in Gravesend. But it is on the first and second floors with no lift so anyone with real mobility problems would have a problemo.

Been to The Peking many times over the years - specially at Christmas (you HAVE to try the 16 course Xmas Banquet!!)Food has always been excellent, as has the service which is attentive yet unobtrusive. The set meals are among the best, and most generous, you can find in a Chinese restaurant. The only down side I have ever found with the Peking is the climb up the stairs to get to it, but it's worth the racing heartbeat!

Went to this restaurant for special occasion with family and were totally ripped off with a magnum of champagne which turned out to be fake! Tasted like pomagne, slightly sparkling apple juice. Others on another table also agreed. Restaurant also had too much air conditioning on low ceiling, therefore cold neck. Shame as the food was good. Restaurant area is upstairs and looked dirty including very dirty stair well. Definitely not going back!

I have dined her several times a year fro the past twenty years, because of its excellent value and wonderful service. Yes the previous owners Mr & Mrs Lin were a unique couple and treated regular customers as friends, but the new proprietor and his wife who previously worked for them have kept the same formula and ambience. Every customer is made to feel welcome, and receive personal service. Yes, the approach is somewhat old-fashioned, but if you want a high quality Chinese there is nowhere better in the area.

Came here on a Saturday night as a group of 8. The waiter taking the drink orders forgot to ask some people for their drink orders, then when he returned 20 minutes later with the other drinks we realised he had brought out the wrong drinks. We were understanding and he apologised. We then waited 45 minutes for our starters. Again, a bit annoying but they were busy so we didn't mind too much. 1 and a half hours then passed and we still hadn't received our mains or any drinks. I went to find someone and politely asked if we could order some more drinks and asked how long the wait was for the mains. Some drinks came half an hour later. So 2 hours in to our visit, still no mains. I asked again, when we would expect these, I was told 5 minutes. Yet 2 and a half hours later we still hadn't received our mains at this point everyone had lost patience and wasn't hungry any more. I told the waitress we were going to pay for our starters and drinks and leave. She promised me 5 minutes later we would receive our mains. Eventually, the mains were served, but with gaps meaning everyone ate separately. We arrived at 7.20 and didn't leave until 11.45. This is ridiculous for a 2 course meal and 2 drinks. When we spoke to the manager after, his excuse was that he didn't realise it would be so busy! The only reason I have given this 2 stars is because the manager apologised and took 20% off our bill.

I went too this restaurant on valentines day after reading the review's of other's on trip advisor. I have walked past it many times and would have thought it was dirty looking from the outside (just a little red sigh'n outside the restaurant with a door and steep stairs taking you up too the two sections of the restraunt.). It is situated on the edge of Gravesend town centre near the clocktower and has been run as a business for 40 years. Once inside the busy restaurant It was a pleasant surprise. Looking arround I am glad I booked Prior to coming. A nice smile greeted us, a guide to the table and our coats hung up for us. Looking at the room it appeared very old fashioned without over painted walls. There are plenty of traditional ageing paintings and ornaments decorating the surrounds with chinese lanterns. There was a set VALENTINE menue with romantic names for each dish. We had a four course meal consisting of PEKING SPECIAL PLATTER, SPRING ROLLS and PRAWN CRACKERS for starters, lovely, i have never had this dish before. On the dish was A king prawn in batter in the shape of a heart. Next Was: CRISPY AROMATIC DUCK WITH ALL THE TRIMMINGS, far more meat than skin and not over cooked. The third course had heart shaped SPECIAL FRIED RICE, with three dishes that were very flavoured and cooked to perfection. They were: FILLET OF STEAK COOKED IN AN IMPERIAL SAUCE, CHICKEN COOKED IN A SATAY SAUCE WITH GREEN CHILI'S AND KING PRAWNS COOKED IN GINGER. a good variety for a main course. This was followed by PEKING TOFFEE APPLES AND FILTERED COFFEE AND CHOCOLATE SHAPED HEARTS. My wife was given a rose and a wrapped present which turned out to be a chinese style bracelet. I think that a lot of effort and thought was put into the evening and the food was classy, unlike some other restraunts in Gravesend. The portions were not huge. However, I did not wake up hungry today. There is just one bad point. This does not reflect badly on the owners though. Anyone with bad mobility problems would find it hard to get up the stairs to the restaurant. For £48.80 including drinks for two, this was good value for money.

Been to the Peking a couple of times, quite a few years ago and always remembered it being good. Booked up again and went Friday 26th Feb, as it says in the title, been around 37 years and probably the oldest restaurant in kent, and in my eyes Probably the best. Made to feel really welcome - service/staff are very professional and Polite, and could not fault the food!!!!!Great choice on menu - set price meals itemized price per person, so you can see exactly how much your spending and then the al-a-cart with almost to much to choose from, as I ended up taken a recommendation from the waiter, and well all I can say is, SUPURB. Would I recommend to a freind, well I was out with a group of about 15 freinds Saturday 27th and have already done so. HIghly recommend to anyone who enjoys going out to eat, looking for great venue, great service and great food!
