Booked for afternoon tea in the Brasserie for our 40th wedding anniversary. Service was slick but totally lacking in charm. The shole experience was so disappointingly impersonal and charmless. The staff were all young and efficient but they could have been serving robots. Everyone spoke in hushed tones and looked as uncomfortable as we felt. It was one in, one out with a huge turnover. The tea itself was good (sandwiches were a bit stodgy but scones and cake were lovely). It doesn't cost anything to dress the place with a few flowers or plants and have staff who smile and engage with the clients. After all that is what going out for afternoon tea is all about.

So we were staying a Peckforton castle and ate in the Brasserie, what a boring plain menu, for main courses there is definitely more choice at Wetherspoons. There was fish annd chips, curry, gammon or mushroom risotto , then a few burgers . I ended up having a burger which came with very underdone fries one slice of tomato a small baby gem lettuce leaf and some red onion cheese etc were to be purchased as an extra. There was a small pot of coleslaw which apparently was homemade but just lacked any flavour I had a cheese board which did have homemade crackers on which were very nice 3 tiny pieces of cheese and a huge bunch of grapes and tiny strips of celery it was ok but nothing special, I’d had a cheese board at another hotel the night before which was cheaper but contained 5 cheeses bara brith walnut , dried fruit I think I was spoilt .i did in form the hotel and gave feedback on the very boring menu

My husband surprised me for our 20th Anniversary, we married at the castle. Staff assumed we were there for afternoon tea, never the intention. Not geared up for the lunch menu. Both ordered the Wagyu burger, no brioche bun for me. I was presented with a mass produced, greasy, flavourless, rubberised burger and a few fries. No salad, no truffle mayo as stated on the menu. It was awful. The brioche bun was a floury white bap! We had to request the salad, which was two pieces of lettuce, a slice of tomato and a slice of onion. Basic condiments also had to be requested. £18-50 was extortionate for what was presented. My husband said it was the worst burger he had ever had. No passing mention of our return visit. (It had been stressed in the comments when booked). It was not busy. The cost of one burger was removed from our bill. The staff were polite. Consideration had been given to booking an overnight stay. I am so glad he didn't. A very disappointing experience.

What a fab experience. Afternoon tea at Peckforton Castle in Tarporley. Received as a Christmas gift and thoroughly enjoyed it. We arrived at the castle , it’s so pretty, and walked through to a beautifully kept courtyard. We were directed to the restaurant where Clair took charge and arranged our meal. She was so friendly and nothing was too much trouble. There was a lovely selection of sandwiches, a perfect selection of cakes - the Bakewell slices were stunning, and a lovely light scone. The coffee - we don’t drink tea haha, was lovely and hot, thank you. The setting was stunning and we had a lovely time. I can thoroughly recommend this. We will be back x

I had booked Festive Afternoon Tea for my mum and sister and felt overwhelmingly disappointed with the ambiance, service and the food. We had driven a considerable distance for this festive treat and apart from the beautiful tree in the grounds the location did not live up to the festive spirit I had expected and hoped my family would enjoy. The standout for the food were the scones, which were delicious and fresh, the mince pie was nice too but the other items were mediocre to poor. As a non meat eater and advised them of that and getting a separate plate I was served a turkey and cranberry sandwich which was not great, at least it wasn’t an allergy issue. I definitely would not recommend the festive afternoon tea at Peckforton Castle to any of my family and friends.

Very pleasant afternoon tea using a voucher purchased via a 3rd party. Booking online was easy, took along the voucher and was asked for it at the end of our meal. Scones were fresh and the cakes were nice, sandwiches were generous. We weren’t offered refills of tea but the teapot yielded 3 cups. Service was efficient and friendly, glorious weather for a walk around the grounds.

Using a Buy a Gift voucher went for an early afternoon tea at this unusual venue. Restaurant is in the renovated castle kitchen area and not very big so hence the need to book. Nice to be able to modify the sandwich selection to suit our tastes as they were fresh made. Scones were nice and still warm with the usual jam and cream. This was followed by 3 small cakes each so along with a large pot of tea made a very pleasant meal. Have attached pictures of the castle exterior which is used as a hotel, larger restaurant, wedding venue and for Range/Land Rover Driving Experiences. Initially service was slow due to staff shortage but overall well worth the trip out

Having not visited for quite some time we were not sure what to expect from earlier reviews. We need not have worried. The staff were very attentive and personable . Special mention goes to Clare who served our afternoon tea. We had a Groupon voucher classic deal.. The brasserie ambience is relaxed and full of character with tables nicely spaced for social distancing. We had a choice of teas and our sandwiches seemed fresh and made to order. Home patisserie style baking and fresh warm scones went down a treat after a local walk in the surrounding beautiful hills,. For what we paid it was excellent value and we would be happy to return .

Went for Sunday lunch as a couple. The castle itself is stunning but when we checked in for our booked Sunday lunch we were seated in a small dark room on a tatty table next to the entrance. The couple seated next to us were so close they could have been on the same table. We ordered drinks and waited 15 minutes for the beer to arrive as they had none at the bar and had to go to another bar. Three choices of starters but I ordered pate to be told they had run out and I could have either mackerel, salmon or soup. I had mackerel which was very nice. My husband had Luke warm bland veg ale soup with a bread roll, no butter. We then ordered the roast pork Sunday lunch which had three small pieces of sliced pork some green beans a slice of carrot, cabbage and three very small potatoes and a soggy piece of crackling. When we asked for apple sauce we were told they didn’t have any. The meal was below average and very disappointing. Service however was very nice and the young lady waitress was very friendly and pleasant.

My friend and I were attending a full Land Rover experience day on 3rd Jan 2020, and with just over an hour to spare between am and pm sessions thought we’d be able to grab a quick lunch in the Brasserie. How wrong we were! Firstly, there were no staff in the Brasserie so we had to wait 5 mins to be greeted. We ordered quickly - nothing complex; a sandwich and bowl of chips. 50 minutes later we left without receiving our food. As did the couple on the table next to us. The couple with young children on the table behind us, who had waited just as long, had to send food back as their chicken burger wasn’t cooked. A flustered manageress appeared just as we were leaving, and said that our drinks were ‘on us’ - 2 pints of lime and soda. How kind. A really disappointment, and I wouldn’t return. By the way, the Land Rover experience day was excellent, with great staff, and great service. Highly recommend. Just take sandwiches with you.

OK we were on a three course deal. Portions were small, especially the hake which was also lacking in vegetables. Soup starter needed a larger piece of bread than was provided. Desserts were reasonable but 2 of our party seemed to be forgotten, we had to ask after everyone else had finished! The staff were fairly helpful especially with the small and young children. The bistro is a funny environment, a former scullery it has a high ceiling and limited decor or character. Tables were odd, we had a collection of small round tables that made eating awkward. After we were allowed to wander around the place which was interesting and made the visit better; the children enjoyed it, but we went to eat and that was disappointing.

We were gifted a sparkling afternoon tea for a special birthday, we were looking forward to this with the beautiful surroundings. The table wasn’t ready on time, but that was okay, we just sat in the hotel reception and waited. We were eventually seated and brought our pot of tea and selection of sandwiches and cakes. The food was nice, although nothing special. The service really lets this place down though. After being brought our sandwiches and drinks, we didn’t see a member of staff again, nobody asked if everything was okay or did we want a top up of tea. We still hadn’t been given our gin/fizz, so I was trying to attract a member of staff, being seated near the kitchen, plenty of staff were back and forth but nobody would give us eye contact. I eventually had to shout over to a member of staff to request our drinks, a bit disappointing that the staff weren’t on hand. This has the potential to be a fabulous eatery but is really let down by FOH staff. What a shame!

I was really disappointed by the service which was dismal but sadly we both had the worst steak sandwich we have ever had. The Hampton Farm Steak Ciabatta was the worst minute steak I have ever had - we are not complainers but we would have sent it back if we had managed to attract the attention of a waiter but sadly they seemed both over run with Groupon afternoon tea visitors but both were ill equipped to look after customers. Whilst the setting was gorgeous, the overall experience was sadly lacking. We didn’t see a happy diner there that day, one couple walked out and we left very let down instead of euphoric ( after all this was supposed to be a small celebration )

There was an incredibly limited, and fussy, menu to choose from. I like simple food well cooked and I struggled to find something to eat. It is gastro pub style food.It was so challenging I asked about the menu the next night thinking we'd have to go out. The brasserie was saved by the manager who offered to make a simple bespoke meal for me the next evening. I was unable to find a starter or dessert, so my husband ate them both! No simple grilled items, salad, bread rolls, fresh fruit. For me that was a struggle. There needs to be an unfussy alternative. Portions could be bigger. It wouldn't cost much to offer a bread item. Given a choice, I wouldn't eat there again; the selection is just too limited.

Regarding desserts. My wife cannot eat dairy or chocolate so was unable to select anything from the dessert menu. I have paid less around the world and in UK and seen much more variety. There was not even rolls for the cheese and ham being offered.Very poor. I have written about this hidden gem before, it's great value for money for a 3 course Sunday lunch but you definitely need to book. The place itself is stunning, the staff are always very efficient and polite and the Sunday lunch is a real treat with veg. included - too many places now charge extra for veg. If it's a 'twosome' going, ask for a window table then you can watch the world go by

Just returned today from a night at peckforton and it was perfect from start to finish. Ive never used the word wow so many times. The staff were brilliant, the meal was brilliant and the room was brilliant. The only thing I would suggest is that they had signs telling guests that there is a bar.If it wasn't for us asking a waitress if theres anywhere to go for a drink we would have gone straight to our room and missed out on the fantastic cellar bar.

Was taken to Peckforton Castle for afternoon tea as a treat. I was so excited and felt as though I was going somewhere really special and would be treated like royalty. The approach to the castle was stunning. My friend and I (both in our older years) were dropped off at the entrance to the castle grounds whilst our younger friend went and parked the car down in the woods! We strolled over the bridge, passed the beautiful church and down a path to the entrance to the hotel. Not quite sure what we would have done if it had been raining! The receptionist was very pleasant and showed us the way to where we were eating. We were shown to a small room with half a dozen tables. It was quite dark in there but we were, after all, eating in a castle! Our waiter was lovely and very accommodating. I was, however, quite disappointed with the the appearance of the afternoon tea. It looked quite dull and boring. The sandwiches were fresh and delicious. The cakes were also delicious but not very exciting. The last time I had afternoon tea, the fancies were just that - fancy and creamy. The obligatory scones, jam and cream were lovely. All leftovers were boxed up by our lovely waiter. All in all it was a pleasant afternoon with lovely friends but I can't in all honesty say I blown away by the experience. Maybe my expectations were set too high. If I were to compare it with the afternoon tea I had at The Midlands Hotel in Manchester, then Manchester win hands down!

Dinner in the brassiere was very good. We had two courses starter and main, no room left for a pudding. Wine reasonably priced. Service good. Breakfast in the main restaurant buffet style - good quality with nice selection of cooked or continental plus juice. Hot drinks and toast served to the table.

Arrived at 11.00 to be told our room would not be ready until 3.30 accepted this however went into spa no swimming pool hot tub full with 6 women glasses left around make up tan left scum on foam which we tried to scoop out. One shower which was dirty full of hair standing room only not enough beds for the guests booked. Poor staff trying to do their best to appease my mini facial was lovely by Abby my pedicure was only a nail paint not pedicure. You must book the restaurant separately otherwise you get put in the brasserie which has no atmosphere. ..the main meal was a disaster as you couldn't cut the beef! The breakfast was good. The bedroom beautiful but we paid for upgrade. Overall stunning castle good staff but not value for money. .your on a conveyer belt. Too many women booked on spa for facilities offered. Both hot tubs should have been open. Took my girlfriend after the passing away of her partner for a treat and was dissapointed overall.

We met up with friends who were staying at the castle. Amazing place, and quite a climb up the driveway, past the squirrels and pheasants. Lovely meal in gorgeous castle. We went down into the cellar for after-dinner drinks and the only let down was that there was no port. Other than that, great evening, lovely surroundings and wonderful company.

We had lunch 28th September for 20th anniversary had appalling service but had originally tried to book overnight stay with meal and full spa day, advised no rooms and would be put on short list. They said book all your treatments and meal and we will notify you of room in couple days, when this didn't happen and we called to check they had no record of this and no restaurant booking. We rebooked but for lunch and cancelled the spa treatments. Lunch as per previous review left a lot to be desired and the management seem to think this was down to one staff member!! It would appear this 1 staff member wears many hats as a couple of days after lunch we had two charges on our statement for services from Pecforton castle, despite cancelling the spa within the notice period they decided to charge us, naturally they had no records of the call that took place to cancel this which came as no surprise, as it took 3 staff to sort a table for the lunch booked for our anniversary meal on 28th September too and might I add at the time of booking they were fully booked and squeezed us in!! We were a party of two and two further tables taken so hardly booked to capacity, they may put efforts into weddings but definitely need to sharpen things when dealing with individuals etc very dissatisfied with the whole experience

I recently spent a weekend at Peckforton Castle. The castle and the scenery are very impressive. With a few simple improvements, this could be so much better.Plus points - Our request for a quiet room had been actioned and the room was very nice. All the staff were very pleasant and the spa treatments were good. The food in both the Brassiere and the restaurant was very good, although the plates at breakfast were not hot so consequently the food was not hot.Minus points-There was dust in several areas and there were dirty cups and saucers and cigarette butts left in the seating area outside the spa for most of the day. The spa only had four loungers and also a shortage of lockers so could not accommodate the spa clientele. The hot tub did not look particularly clean. There could be no more impressive venue and setting and this could be excellent with just a few inexpensive improvements and it is a shame that it is lacking in attention to detail. The Land Rover Experience was fantastic and I have submitted a separate review of that.

On arrival I was rather surprised to be told that they were not taking any more diners. I explained that I had booked a table and was then asked if we were 'dinner, bed and breakfast'. I said we were not staying at the hotel, at which point the waitress said "Oh, typical" as if that explained everything, and asked us to follow her into the restaurant. There were three or four large round tables (seating 6/8) down one side of the room, three of which (I think) were occupied. All the other tables were for two people and none of these were laid. This in itself was rather surprising as, on booking the table earlier in the week, I was told we could not eat at the time I asked for, only at 8.15 pm, implying that the restaurant was busy - which it clearly was not. Also on booking I had asked if there were any large parties in on the evening concerned and was told it was only couples - slightly odd as we were the only couple in the room. The room had the look and ambiance of an up-market canteen.I could write quite a bit about the menu, but wont - suffice to say my husband and I both thought it rather pretentious in style. The food - stale bread, the langoustine amuse-bouche neither hot, cold or warm, merely tepid (the notes on the menu had told us that if food was not hot, it was because it was not meant to be hot). Having eaten in some of the finest restaurants, sitting on the terrace of the Hotel Gritti Palace overlooking the Grand Canal, eating sole with spider crab rissotto comes to mind, as does Le Manoir de Quatre Saisons among others, it was the first time I had been told, in so many words, that I should eat what I was given and shut up! For our main course, we both chose sirloin steaks as nothing else appealed, again we followed the instructions printed on the menu and asked for medium rare. Mine was much closer to medium than I would have liked but when it came to the 'twice cooked chips' which, instead of being fluffy on the inside and crisp on the outside were, in fact, greasy, stodgy and limp, I could remain quiet no longer and complained. We were offered replacements but both of us declined (the cost of two drinks were taken off the bill). All in all it was it was hugely disappointing and we will definitely not be going back. There was one saving grace and that was our waiter - stupidly I did not ask his name but we did tell him and thanked him as we left.

We decided to visit the castle during a car journey of the Cheshire area on a nice summers day.First appearances are great, the castle looks wonderful and the long drive way adds to the experience of visiting somewhere a little different. We visited during a wedding, and felt to some degree as if we were intruding. We asked at reception where we could buy something to drink. We were told by the perfectly pleasant person on reception that we could buy a drink at the bar across the hallway, and sit in another room close by to enjoy it.Once in the bar, we were told to sit outside in the courtyard where would would be served.Unfortunately, I had to go back in three times over a 40 minute period to ask to be served by the uninterested staff, something I have never experienced in any establishment. I got the distinct impression that we were indeed intruding/and or an unwanted hindrance. It is a shame because it would have been a lovely location for the wedding we are planning, but unfortunately we were left with a sour taste in our mouth by the experience. The courtyard we were asked to sit in was dirty and had bird poo on the chairs. It appeared to have not been cleaned in at least a week.If we had received a better experience, we would most likely be calling to book our wedding (regardless of the dirty courtyard), but the lack of service we received has made us continue looking. A shame since the building, grounds and location are so wonderful.

Went here today for afternoon tea which was bought for us as a gift. the person who had bought it had the champagne afternoon tea. so we got the champagne first, as I don't drink I had juice which the waitress ut ice in without telling me and I don't like it with ice in. we looked at the menu and our friend had aid £44.95 for two of us for this. The drink of tea was very nice. When the waitress came out with the afternoon tea we were shocked. We have been for many afternoon teas at different laces but this was the worst. we had three finger slices of sandwiches which most I didn't like, the rest was cakes. Ok I have a sweet tooth but even for me it was too much. Normally they ut little tiny quiches, sausage rolls etc, so was very shocked to see just few sandwiches, certainly wasn't worth the rice and we wont be going back again and wouldnt recommend it either. the very small room it was in was very cold and not at all inviting. So all in all not a very nice experience.

The service is quick but not hurried. There is a good choice of wines and beers to accompany your meal. I have now been to Peckforton Castle for afternoon tea twice in the past few months. The selection of sandwiches and cakes are some of the best I've tasted and believe me, I've been to a few places and I am extremely fussy! You get a lot for your money too - around 4 finger sandwiches each, 2 scones (plain and fruit), a mini macaron, and another 2 mini cakes. If you go for the champagne afternoon tea you also get a strawberry tart, which unfortunately was slightly smaller on our second visit, a bit disappointing as it was delicious! The only thing that was a bit of a let down was the service, particularly on our first visit. The gentleman who I assume was restaurant manager wasn't the friendliest and the waiting staff didn't seem too happy either. That wasn't enough to put us off though!

On both mornings plates for the buffet breakfast were stone cold. Asked one of the staff who informed us that the element in the plate warmer was broken and there was nothing that could be done!! A strange comment when there is a kitchen full of ovens and steamers that could be used to provided heated plates - clearly the member of staff could not be bothered to even go and enquire. This followed disappointing evening meals in the Brasserie. This experience fell below the expected standard and spoilt our stay.

Been here today at the 2010 Brasserie restaurant for a birthday dinner for 5. Being vegetarians, we had only a few choices. The Estrella beer on the tap was good though. For starters we had mozzarella frittatas and soup of the day which was potato and leek accompanied by some nice home made brown bread and butter. For the mains, we had veg halloumi and wild mushroom burger and Gnocchi with Mediterranean veggies. Both were decent in taste. For desserts we had banana caramel sundae and white chocolate cheesecake with strawberry . We went more for the castle ambience so we were not expecting too much variety on the food and we were right. Katie our waitress was very hospitable and took good care of our table . Price wise as well, I found this place quite affordable for group visits like us. Overall a good visit .

Always a favourite venue. The food was really enjoyable as usual. However, although the service was good, there was overuse of the phrase "no worries" from the waitress! No lactose free milk alternative available so went elsewhere for coffee and cake where our needs were met.
