Pearl of the Orient in Portsmouth

Visiting family and friends in Portsmouth again so decided to go to my favourite Chinese takeaway in Portsmouth. I was a bit worried after seeing the recent reviews, but nothing to worry about. Service and food is still great as it’s always been. My sesame prawn on toast was a generous portion of minced prawns on the toast and just so tasty. I also had the house special chow mein, which had a lots of delicious vegetables in as well as chicken , prawns and pork. The other members of my family also loved their dishes. The young girl serving me was friendly and knowledgeable about the menu. I suspect the reviews from some of other people obviously don’t enjoy freshly cooked food. They probably like food enhanced with artificial flavouring like MSG. I go to Pearl of the Orient because I enjoy tasting food as it should be and not over seasoned with MSG . I actually get bad headaches from food that has MSG so I so glad Pearl of the Orient caters for people like me.

We ordered various dishes & all were bland & disappointing . We decided on this only because our usual place had a problem with their IT & collection only option We used to always use this place but had a couple of awful meals & it has improved .. won't be ordering again

My new favourite local Chinese takeaway. Duck is of great quality. Prawn toast amazing. My friend from London raved about it too.

Visiting family and had a takeaway from their favourite Chinese. They weren't wrong the food was delicious. I have the dim sum platter as a starter and then the hockien fried rice ( a chef special ) something I have not even had before, both courses were great. The dim sum was just like I had in Hong Kong. I will definitely be visiting my family more often so I can get my takeaway fix from Pearl of the Orient.

We used to use this takeaway but moved away to somewhere more local. Unfortunately our local was closed so decided to use Pearl of the orient as we had used to use them in the past. So disappointing. I had sweet and sour chicken balls and all they tasted of were the oil they had been fried in which was disgusting and the sauce was watery. I also had chicken chow mein which had no flavour whatsoever. I had a couple of mouthfalls and ditched it in the bin. Hubby wasn’t impressed with his but so hungry he ate his. Such a shame as I know each takeaway is different and I have lived in HK so know what to expect in the uk. Won’t use again

Amazing food the salt and chilli chips were incredible. Food was cooked to order and the staff were really friendly I highly recommend.

Just moved to area and fancied Chinese! Well it didn’t disappoint! One of the nicest takeaways we have had in a long time. Downloaded their App… ordering was easy, arrived on time and was lovely and hot. Food was absolutely delicious. Will defo be ordering again! 5* from us

Just got a chinese from here and i had a beef chowmain and im not evan kidding its all fat and a funky taste never eating here again if i wanted to eat fat id cook a very fatty food and just eat the fat when i say it was full of fat it was swimming

This take-away outlet has traded here through 3 generations and appears to be efficiently run by the same family for over 30 years. It’s relatively clean and tidy inside, with some benches for people to sit while they wait to collect their orders. Whilst the daughter was efficient and polite, the mother was very snappy and rude. We were not impressed with the food, which was lacking in flair and quality ~ and we felt it was bland and overpriced for what it was. Some items were missing from our order and I called to have a discussion which turned into a bit of a heated argument, with the mother insisting she was right and all my issues were my fault. To me, it doesn’t seem good business to continue arguing with your customer for the sake of a few quid, and to keep that customer happy and coming back. Whilst we got one item refunded, it felt like a load of hassle, and I won’t ever go back. It’s a shame, as the daughter handled things so well, the mother is a bit of a rude and stroppy lady.

Always get our chinese take away from them A1 service and food .

Delivered on time, was piping hot and portions are massive! The last Chinese I had (well over a year ago and from a different takeaway) was over salted and made me so unwell. This has to be the best “local” Chinese takeaway I have ever had, it wasn’t over salted, flavours were delicious and this is hands down a family favourite after today! 10/10 from us!

Bland tasteless food ordered Kung po chicken which is supposed to be hot but it was just like sweet and sour. Chicken chicken chow mein had no taste of anything and egg fried rice was like boiled rice. Sweet and sour sauce for the chicken balls had no taste at all the only good thing was duck spring rolls as the hoisin sauce was the only thing that tasted of anything so this is my first and last order at the pearl of the orient

Not sure if this is a great review of PotO or a statement of take-aways in our area, but we pass the door of 4 other similar establishments in order to buy our meal from here. The taste is worth coming back every time, and there is a better selection for me, the veggie than anywhere else i have tried.

Just OK. Our regular place in Emsworth was closed, so we used Pearl of the Orient for the first time in a very long time. Disappointed, as it used to be much better.

Last night was the first time I have used this restaurant and I was really really impressed. Quick delivery and great value for money with the amount of food I got. Will definitely be using again. Thank You 😊

Stayed at the holiday Inn express and ordered via phone. Delivery was spot on and the food was faultless in fact would go as far to say best take away I've had.

The sweet and sour chicken was amazing. The beef with mushrooms was delicious, and the prawn crackers were crispy and delightful.

Used this takeaway for the first time last night, the staff were friendly and helpful and the food was excellent. Flavours were lovely and actually one of the best takeaways I've had.

Visiting Portsmouth for business and staying at the Holiday Inn right now. I fancied a change from hotel food and the hotel staff recommended this takeaway. They delivered to the hotel so that was nice I didn’t even leave the hotel. I had crispy duck and pancakes to start and it was delicious. I also had a chicken curry and fried rice. I am so glad that I tried this takeaway. Sometimes I find some takeaway food too salty and greasy but no issue with my meal tonight from Pearl of the Orient.

Was hoping for so much more reading the reviews. Very bland. Food supposed to be crispy was soggy - seemed microwave heated. Have been looking for a decent Chinese takeaway for some time and sad to say this isn’t it. Throughly disappointed.

Great value for money, food arrives hot when delivered and driver's are polite

Rather more expensive, and smaller portion, than my Regular Chinese, which was unfortunately closed, for a couple of weeks!

We have had Simon deliver our Chinese take away - hot (temperature), tasty and everything we could wish for in a Chinese meal. Great prices, too, and an online menu to be tempted in advance of booking. Allow plenty of time ahead of deciding what your fancy - so much to choose from! Have a mix of whatever you like and share it all. We thoroughly enjoyed it and have popped into the shop, too. It was very clean with excellent service from Wing Yu and safety Covid-wise adhered to as well. Mask wearing and customers waiting outside to be safe. Certainly the best Chinese Take away in the Portsmouth UK area.

It's a sheer delight to go here. The staff are friendly and keenly attentive to dietary requirements, and the food is always mouthwateringly delicious. Definitely the best Chinese takeaway in the area!

Graet food and nice view good for a snack

I have heard a lot about this Chinese being one of the best in Portsmouth, so decided to give it a go....... ordered chicken in chilli - was given beef!!!! I didn't notice until I got home and then couldn't be bothered to venture back out to get the dish changed. But one thing I did notice was the consistency of the sauce was awful - think jellied eels and you would be spot on! The sauce was almost had a gelatine substance added to it. It was disgusting I have never had a sauce so thick and reminded me of dog meat in a jelly Absolutely awful!!!!

Been using for around 2 years now, never had a bad experience. The food is always amazing and never anything missing or wrong. The staff are wonderful, always helpful and friendly, I will always recommended to everyone!

Our 1st experience of this was fantastic! As I have coeliac disease it always nerve racking trying new places. I can honestly say the lady I spoke to about gluten free options was the most knowledgeable person I've ever spoken to in a restaurant! She took me through which dishes could be made gluten free. When we collected she marked up the whole menu for me with my gluten free choices. The food was delicious and we will definitely be returning for more! Highly recommended 😃

Before the pandemic we used to go down (from Cowplain) and collect our meals - never disappointed. We had to shield until the end of July, and so decided to treat ourselves tonight and have a delivery. Very prompt delivery, piping hot food and absolutely delicious as always. Worth the delivery costs - thank you.

Used to order from this takeaway regularly, but haven't used for a while. Revisited last week and the food was awful. Completely tasteless. Really poor, given it is one of the most expensive Chinese takeaways in the area. Would not recommend.

First take away from this place and I won’t go again... rice and chowmein tasteless mushy chicken it seems like it’s not actually chicken and taste like fish! The curry sauce was sweet too ... the chips were nice though

this is the best chinese ive ever had and still is ive been going here for many years and it has always been the best ever i always have duck chowmain and duck in plum sauce try it so good im in top 2% on trip advisor so if i say its good it is alan and sally from portsmouth

Great flavours, choice and if you are not sure what you fancy, the owners are happy to suggest. They do not use any additives to boost flavours.

Lovely sweet and sour chicken , the Singapore fried rice is excellent too we have had beef curry from here to which is very tasty I recommend this take away .

1st time visiting here for a takeaway and was very impressed. Food very delicious and tasty and value for money can get very busy by the amount of orders bring taken on the phone and off the street so be prepared for a wait but it's worth it.

My favourite takeaway and just a short walk away. Food is cooked quickly and always tastes good. Front of house is a very pleasant lady and you are always greeted with a smile. Check out their mid week meal deal! Even if this wasn't on our doorstep we would order from here. Its clear that everyone takes pride in their work.

The best little Chinese restaurant in the area

First time here after looking for a Chinese takeaway that I haven't tried. Very good pancake roll - crispy! Good sweet and sour mix - even my son loves it. Overall food was good. Will try again one day.

I came to this restaurant based on good reviews and we are currently on holiday in Pagham so we travelled 40 mins to get this food was so disappointed and upset my husbands special chow was soaked in sauce with only a few pieces of meat an broccoli and other veg on top of soggy noodle. We literally had a taste and have put it inThe fridge debating whether to try the next day but seems like it will go straight in the bin ! We spent £25 on this order no prawn crackers and is a lot of money when u have budgeted each day for meals on our holiday !

Fast, friendly and amazing taste!

Every time we drove by this little gem we said "really must try! ". Well we finally did, and WOW!! Great menu with loads of choice, delivery option at reasonable cost.. The portions were larger than the average takeaway and delivered within the timescale we were told when ordering. The food was amazing, so tasty - a real treat and not expensive. Will be using again soon.

We ordered tonight and we are not disappointed at all. The food was still hot when we arrived home. Plenty of food !!! It was so tasty and spicy as we like it! Definitely recommend Pearl of Orient!!! Thank you for the warm welcome!!! We will come back soon.

Cuando se hospedó en un hotel local, me ordenaron comida, la señora del teléfono fue muy amable y extremadamente servicial. Pedimos el curry de Katsu, el arroz hervido y la salsa de curry, la carne crujiente de chile frita, las costillas picantes (secas), el chow mein simple y la salsa satay. Todo fue excepcional. Entrega rápida, galletas de gambas gratis y comida increíble, ¡delicioso! Definitivamente ordenaría desde aquí de nuevo. Comida de primera y servicio al cliente de primera.

Lo peor para llevar en Portsmouth, todo viene en una olla de jalea como líquido. El curry en sí es una olla de gelatina verde oscuro, no solo se ve muy apetecible sino que sabe exactamente como se ve.

Fancyaron a los chinos y se encontraron con Pearl Of The Orient por casualidad, ya que estaban abiertos los lunes, ya que muchos están cerrados. Muy contentos de haberlo hecho ya que fue excepcional. Teníamos chow mein de cerdo, pollo mixto y langostinos bolitas agridulces, y un plato encantador de pollo y chile. Todo estaba delicioso y muy caliente. Ningún mensaje es bueno porque siempre me molesta. Esta comida fue perfecta. Un poco más caro que algunos platos para llevar, pero vale la pena por la calidad de la comida. Definitivamente voy a utilizar de nuevo.

Best in area, lady who works behind counter is very friendly and I have never seen anyone multi task as well as her the phone is constantly ringing.

The Pearl of the Orient is our go-to Chinese takeaway. Simply the best, and reasonable value too. If this place isn't open (on their day off) we don't eat takeaway. Their food is great!

No he estado en Pearl of theOrient desde hace mucho tiempo y la comida que he tenido siempre ha sido de alto nivel, sin embargo, tuve un rollo de panqueque y un Singapore Chow mein ambos estaban bien y un montón de fideos, pero la carne en ambos era literalmente pequeños cubos, también los fideos eran muy condimentados (encantador) pero me dejó sediento por el resto de la noche, tal vez sea la forma en que está preparado, lo que me pareció muy extraño haber comido literalmente cientos de platos chinos. Definitivamente voy a ir otra vez porque estoy seguro de que esta fue una de ellas.

Tasty food without added sugar or msg, when you phone an order in to pick up the times are accurate to work from. Chefs specials are worth trying too. I go back fairly routinely, definitely better than most Chinese takeaways.

Ordered a takeaway Saturday night for collection, got home, how disappointed we were. Food was really bland, tasteless and swimming in water, the chilli beef was awful, not crispy and a strange pink colour. Such a shame as this is normally one of the better takeaways in the area. Were the staff having a bad night doubt if we'll return.

Been using this take way for numerous years have tried others but always end up wishing had just kept to the pearl of the orient. Never had a bad take away from them and the service has always been lovely too.
