Took my young daughter for afternoon tea, it was busy so needed to wait but it was well worth it. The staff were amazing, very friendly and helpful ( we wanted just one type of sandwich because we don’t eat meat ) and they sorted this without any fuss. The sandwiches and cakes was super tasty and fresh. I would say just couple of down sides, wish my daughter could have had a juice instead of hot drink with the afternoon tea (But she was still very happy with hot chocolate) And toilets are upstairs, maybe not so good for someone with mobility issues. All in all a very good visit and can’t wait to visit again.

Having last visited Patesserie Valerie York in 2022, we decided to visit while in York today. The cafe was quite busy, and there were several staff serving, however we waited almost 20 mins before someone took our order. 2 Teas, 2 Scones, a Cake slice, a Milk shake, Coke Cola. It was another 15 mins before the 2 pots of tea arrived, with a bottle of Coke. Then we waited again, at least 10 more mins for the scones, minus butter to arrive.By this time, the tea was cold! I requested butter, which we again waited for, so the Scones were also cold! No sign of the Cake Slice or Milk Shake, so we went to the counter....twice, still left for what must have been another 15 mins. While sitting I saw the Barista wiping the inside of cups and the saucers with a grubby looking blue cloth, which had probably been used to wipe around the coffee machine. We were still waiting watching customers who arrived long after us, get served. The Cake and Milk Shake arrived just as we had had enough of waiting. The visit and poor service cost over £27. Tiny Scones costing £3.95 EACH, and a Cake slice for £5.95. Coupled with dreadful poor service and no apologies at all. That's our final visit. Awful avoid the place unless you have a few hours to just sit there.

I was gifted afternoon tea voucher for my special day & combined it with a three night stay in York with my husband. The service was excellent the staff were very helpful & friendly but alas the food average & very minimal let down entirely by the ‘tired shabbiness’ of the patisserie. We were informed we would not be able to take any of the afternoon tea away with us although there were cakes left that we did not eat, in our opinion there was far too many sweets & not enough savoury food in one serving !! All in all an ok experience 😩 Mrs C Richardson

Came here around luch time but didn't want a full meal so opted instead for the cream tea for 2. Couldn't believe how cheap it was! There is a choice of scone, 4 miniature pots of jam, clotted cream and a pot of tea each. It was delicious. The staff were also lovely.

Great welcome from the staff & the service was first class. From the menu we had tomato soup & full english breakfast 🍳.. Only one downside & reason for not rating 5 stars, the disable toilet was a complete mess & needing cleaning.. Apart from the above we certainly recommend you visit & enjoy the warm welcome & great food.. 👌

Having visited several times before my mum and I chose to come on our birthday trip out. Having waited nearly 30 minutes for our food to arrive the poached eggs were rock hard. We asked for some fresh to be made and how long this would take having already waited such a long time. The waitress begrudgingly took the plates and said it would be 5-10 minutes longer. There was no apology or a complimentary drink offered bearing in mind we had already wasted so long waiting in the first place. As we only had until 12 to leave YORK and wanted to see other things we decided to leave as we were hungry and fed up of waiting. I got up to speak to the waitress (Amber) and said we were leaving so cancel the order and she was extremely rude and almost started a fight with me. When I said I felt the drinks should be complimentary due to the bad service we received with the food. Her manager had to calm her down and ask her to stop being so argumentative. This really ruined our day as I was extremely upset and had the shakes as I am always very polite and I have never been spoken to in a cafe/ restaurant that way in my life. I should have received an apology from the fact we had asked so long and not received a good service. I will never frequent a the same company again.

We visited yesterday with a Groupon Xmas present for Afternoon Tea for two with a Prosecco. On arrival the very chirpy waitress advised us that the only branch that serves Prosecco with the afternoon tea is in Birmingham! Brilliant start as we are in York! Undeterred, we persevere for what is best described as a ‘very average offering’. Now, I’m no expert, the bit I was looking forward to was the Prosecco, so we started off on the wrong foot, but what we were given was a very lacklustre set of clinically small finger sandwiches, tasteless scones and some very small specially selected bits of cake. I was starving when we left and felt a bit cheated. We should have scrapped the Groupon and just had a couple of those cakes in the fridge that usually look lovely, a cup of tea and then gone elsewhere for a Prosecco!

My partner and I came here today and called ahead last night to book our vegetarian afternoon tea - on the phone there was no problem with this and we therefore booked a table. The person on the phone was grateful that we’d called ahead to agree the vegetarian food. We arrived and were told that they don’t take bookings (which was fine but not true) and we took a seat. The area was quite dirty and there were lots of uncleared tables. We were sat waiting for someone to get our order for a long time and we asked for vegetarian without any egg sandwiches. Someone then came back to us after we ordered and asked if we like goats cheese because there was no Brie - all together it sounded like they were just guessing what to throw together to make the meal vegetarian and we were really disappointed and lost faith in the meal being any good.

I was treating a friend to afternoon tea and was somewhat disappointed by the fact that When asked whether we would like to order tea with my Prosecco Afternoon Tea we weren’t told it would cost an extra £2.50 per pot. I was going to give the waitress a £5 tip but because I was annoyed about being misled, I used this to pay for the tea instead so she missed out. We visited with a voucher on a wet Monday - and it really cheered us up! Staff were attentive and friendly - explaining the options, checking the veggie filling that we queried, cleaning the sides of the table when a spill was pointed out (they might want to check other tables too) . A special mention must go to Giovanna who was cheery and helpful - even making sure we chose our gift cakes before the choice ran low. We had the vegetarian afternoon tea - imaginative fillings with light bread. The cakes were tasty and just the right size. And we appreciated the refills of tea and coffee too. We are looking forward to our gift box of 4 more yummy cakes!

I was in York looking for a late lunch and this seemed ideal as there as an all day breakfast/brunch type menu and other hot sandwiches. I had a croque Madame and my friend had a blt. The food was good and staff who came to the table were fine. However, it was not very relaxing. While eating we could hear crashing of pots from an area off the main counter, very noisy. The young staff were chatting to each other and not looking to see if customers needed them. My friend had asked for her tea to be brought after the meal, and it took a while for her to attract attention when she was ready for it. When we left at around 2.30 the place was almost empty - this on a warm day in a busy tourist area at the start of a Bank Holiday weekend. The restaurant has good food, but the staff need more direction from an experienced person.

We stopped here for breakfast after visiting the Jorvik centre. The smashed advocado on toast was good but the poached egg was hard. The waitress looked at me like I was speaking an alien language when I asked for salad dressing. She said they didn't have any! The ladies loos were filthy, the hand drier didnt work. The whole time we were there (about 40 mins) all of the staff were standing talking, laughing doing absolutely nothing. The waitress removed my husbands plate before he had finished, then proceeded to remove the salt, pepper and butter etc from our table while we were still sitting there finishing our tea. Did she think we were going to pinch them???

I booked a high tea for two as a treat for a visiting relative and visited this establishment on Thursday 15 August 2019. The service was appalling. On ordering we received our pot of tea however this had gone cold before the sandwiches etc arrived. The selection was poor, bread sandwiches were dry and hard, quiche so salty inedible, scones dry and hard. The cakes a complete let down. Because of the delay in being served I ordered another pot of tea, however waited so long had to go and ask where it was after which two pots arrived as we were about to leave. I would certainly not recommend and advised the manager of this. During our visit I observed three sets of customers give up waiting and leave the premises. Dreadful experience not to be repeated.

Very disappointing. We visited about this time last year and weren’t too impressed but visited again yesterday and it’s definitely not what it used to be. We asked for filter coffee and the waitress told us: ‘That’s Americano.’ Actually, it isn’t but we let it go. They arrived with a jug of hot water and we had to ask for milk. We asked for chocolate eclairs and what was served were two lengths of the driest Choux pastry I’ve ever experienced, filled with a thick wedge of thick pale brown sickly fondent and topped with awful chocolate type drizzle in brown and white. It was a travesty and bore no resemblance to any chocolate eclairs we’ve ever had. The waitress, very nice and polite, assured us it was the new menu and this new menu was all excellent. I’m sorry. It isn’t. We would not bother going back.

I received a gift , afternoon tea for my birthday. I went with a fruend on a Sunday afternoon. We got there around 2 oclock. It was not busy and to me the decor was dull and uninviting, a bit scruffy.no atmosphere. At the price of £12.50 per head it was very lacking. The sandwiches were fingers of ordinary white bread. cream cheese and smoked salmon, cucumber, egg and ham and mustard. The mustard was so hot it burnt my mouth and I couldn't taste the ham. There was a small quiche, which didn't have any taste really and was definitely not fresh. A tiny fruit scone , again not fresh, with the usual jam and cream, and a plain scone. A couple of tiny cakes, an eclair which had hardly any cream inside. A sponge which was dry. You could have as much tea or coffee as you wanted. I won't be repeating the experience.

There were dirty cups & rubbish everywhere behind the counters & the staff were literally throwing people cakes on plates. I’m sure if food standards had arrived at that time, they would of had a field day. We eventually got our take away & the cakes were nice enough. Cakes were ok, credit to the scones....they were lovely....everything else was bland. The interior wasn't inviting, and it was so full of "snobs" talking loudly in p8sh accents. Perhaps most of the cakes looked more delicious than they actually were, but we did not try all of them, just a few! The afternoon tea at Patisserie Valerie is one of the best I've had. The mini cakes are delicious and I would highly recommend booking in for the afternoon tea to sample some of the mini sandwiches, quiches, scones and cakes!

beautiful cakes and lovely coffee. Excellent and courteous service. The only negative comment I have is about the lack of personal space- the tables are crammed too close to each other

lovely helpful staff, moved chairs to accommodate our buggy. Good service, attentive and friendly. Orders taken and served to the table but you need to pay the bill at the till.

I treated my wife to a full tea as a treat and we enjoyed the experience. A nice little tray of sandwiches and cakes and good quality pots of tea to wash it down. The service was excellent and the food great quality and we were even given two large cakes to take home. We will do this again as it added to the holiday.

Visited for afternoon tea. Arrived in the cafe - didn’t know whether to wait to be seated or not, nobody seems bothered. Eventually got a table - upstairs wasn’t open apparently though for some reason yet people had to go upstairs for the toilet as it was out of order downstairs. Waited ages for our afternoon tea and drinks to arrive; had been asked twice by different staff whether we had even been served - nobody appeared to know what they were meant to be doing - it was organised chaos. When the food arrived, it was delicious as usual but a lot of people were clearly frustrated by the wait for everything. Not ideal!

We visited the Jorvic Centre and had spotted Valerie's beforehand with a view to going there afterwards. We weren't disappointed, being seated quickly and offered swift service. Tasty toasted sandwiches with speciality tea followed by mouth watering pastries, really really good! A great place, when seated in the window, for people watching and a good view of the delightful old church nearby. Highly recommended!

Busy on arrival but had plenty of seating upstairs and a little on the ground floor. Staff very attentive once you had their focus but did need you to grab their attention first. Very kind and chatty. Made our son feel very comfortable, which isn't easy as he has autism and hates unfamiliar places. Food lovely but pasta warm rather than hot. Cakes were amazing. All in all a nice lunch experience.

Visited mid week with my mum. No one directing us to a table so we sat at one recently vacated and still with dirty crockery. Took quite a while to be offered a menu, and then only after asking. Told it was because we’d seated ourselves therefore it was assumed dirty things were ours. Waited again for order to be taken - so long I was in the process of putting my jacket on to leave, which was spotted by the one waitress who seemed to be doing all the work and who sent a member of staff who’d been chatting behin£ the counter with a colleague to take our order. Mum requested a scone, which they didn’t have, but offered a toasted tea cake as alternative (which wasn’t actually on the menu), which she was ok with. My choice of cake was available, though the waiter had to check as he initially didn’t think it was. Good job, as I was ready to leave, again! Took a good fifteen minutes for food plus two coffees to be delivered to the table, even though I had a clear view of the coffee having been sat on the counter for three or four minutes before it arrived. Had it been any cooler, it would have gone back and we’d definitely have left!

Its not usual for myself to complain but I felt this really needed reporting as no help or sympathy at the cafe was given. Very poor customer service.

Visited this restaurant/cafe and was very disappointed by both the service and the food. We ordered scrambled eggs with smoked salmon on toast. The eggs were over cooked and cold and the smoked salmon came 5 minutes later. My daughter ordered avocado on toast which had poached eggs on these were raw and still “snotty” she asked for them to be changed. Half an hour later they came , by which time she had finished her coffee and I had finished my lunch. No replacement coffee was offered to her. We complained and were met with disinterest!! We will certainly not be visiting again and would not recommend this place to anyone.

We were looking forward to a treat of a cooked breakfast. When it arrived it was Luke warm, the mushrooms were stone cold, sausages part cold part warm. We complained, had to wait a long time for a new breakfast and what do you know it was still COLD. We were charged the full price and not very apologetic. Looking at other reviews one would think they would have learnt something!!

Visited today with my husband for our first time. Sorry to say but I will not return. Style over substance springs to mind. We were using a Groupon voucher for 2 breakfasts and 2 hot drinks, so I appreciate that there can be an allowance for everything not being spot on, however the experience was just bad from start to finish. We were ignored when we first walked in, again as it was our first visit we didn't know that it was table service. Then the waitress spoke directly to the people who came in after us, and even served their table before ours. We relayed our order to 2 different members of staff, a food half hour after we arrived, as they had to question it, and it still came to the table wrong. To make matters worse it was also cold. The apology from the waiter wasn't very sincere, the staff behind the counter seemed more interested in their conversation, and the manager tried, but we decided to leave rather than except another replacement an hour later. A shame as the cakes in the window did look nice but we will not be back to try them.

We went for tea and dessert after Jorvik and it was very nice. Our waitress was very plesant and it was a nice relaxing break in the afternoon. Their set priced menu looked good even though we didn’t try it, but we will probably go back again. They also have a nice looking afternoon tea for two.

We stopped in for lunch as we really liked the cakes. Quickly shown to a table but service slow. The food, when it came was a bit disappointing. My soup was lukewarm and very bland, my son and husband's sandwiches rather bland (although my son enjoyed his hot chocolate) I though it was expensive for what we had.

Great experience throughout. Very busy as you expect a high quality tearoom to be. Great staff. Amazing cakes which deserved to be both eaten in , then taken away for later.

Had a lovely visit, waited a little bit but we were following the lunch rush. The cakes were some of the best in the city and the atmosphere was nice and relaxing. We spent a little time here everyday we were in York.

Popped in for a bite before work and noticed that it was filled with dirty tables which made me want to take away as i went to get my tuna sandwich i noticed a pair of scissors just lying there as i gave it to the guy working he looked completely clueless, once my food was cooked they picked it up with their hands!! and just shoved it in the packaging so when it came to eating it, most of the tuna and cheese was stuck to the top and it was not enjoyable. I wish I went back to complain and get my money back but I just didn't have time by then

No gluten free options on the menu so my 17 year old niece who has coeliac was offered a snack bar. We had already ordered food for the rest of the party and then was told that she couldn't purchase anything from Tesco to eat in the cafe with us. Not only were the cafe unable to accommodate her dietary requirements, they were also not willing to accommodate her to be able to eat breakfast with the rest of the family. This does not feel very inclusive and nor does it meet the requirements of the equality act 2010. Very disappointing Tesco!

The coffee ☕️ is excellent here, and the staff service is outstanding. However, the queue at peak times plus the waiting time let this cafe down. Creating 2 permanent queues, having 2 tills permanently staffed along with 2 drinks stations permanently staffed would perhaps help.

Sadly the staff were bordering on rude , especially the lady who appeared to be in charge . There was a tiny space to wait for a table. As I was on my own , the table which had been cleared for me by one of the other staff was not given to me and I was pit at a table next to a door where children were attending a private party. I wanted to order soup but was told it would be ½ hour. Not sure why that would be as it said soup was available from 12 noon and it was simply a case of putting some in a bowl ! This , coupled with a frosty atmosphere was enough to make me leave. There were 3 staff working in thr seating area yet there were uncleaned tables and lots of people who were clearly waiting to order . Sadly , I decided I wasn't particularly welcome and I decided to leave.
