Stayed here with friends over several nights.the property needs urgent refurbishment and staff retraining. Receptionist and night porter together with the waiter in the Fat Abbot all haveappalling attitudes and create a very poor impression .All were extremely unhelpful and appeared to dislike their jobs which reflects in their service

Stayed for 2 nights as going to a Wedding close by. Only had time for one visit to Spa really enjoyed the Pool and Jacuzzi etc, treatment area looked very nice but I did not use. Nice room with large Bathroom, Tea and Coffee provided just wish hotels would provide a bottle of water too..enjoyed Breakfast plenty of choice but strange layout to tables as we were in a separate room first morning was organised with juice etc on offer in this room too but second morning nothing other than the main room and tables laid in bench style..? Staff could have offered to help more with awkwardness of this room and please chat and smile.. Good Morning is a pleasant start to anyone's day..

a 2 day luxury spa break for my partners birthday Reception staff very helpful, our room was down the corridor to the rear of reception. A spacious clean tidy room with a nice bathroom. breakfast in the Lascelles dining room was good but very very dark , especially in the actual food area. It requires much much more light. Spa treatment was excellent and well managed Evening meal in the Fat Abbott was also very good quality. The duty male member of staff was excellent but his assistant female staff members needed to be more busy and pro-active and not avoiding getting on with things. All in all an enjoyable experience

We booked for four of us for afternoon tea, which we brought my parents in law to s was their first ever afternoon tea! Service was excellent, the sandwiches, scones & little cakes were delicious and we upgraded to a glass of Prosecco for an extra £2 per person, which added to the already excellent value for money all served in delightful surroundings. I would recommend and will definitely return, hopefully for a spa experience.

i went into the parsonage hotel and asked the receptionist (nicole) if they are still serving coffee. she replied yes and if i would like to take a seat in the lounge or bar she would send someone it to take my order. i chose the bar which had nice decor a good selection of gins and wine i found a seat near the window and waited it was no more than a minuite when a lady called diane come into the bar said hello and what would i like.diane had a bubbly personality and kept smiling i asked for a latte coffee no problem she said and left the room. then a smartly dressed duty manager makile came into the bar looked up and said hello and asked if i was being looked after i replied yes. shortly after the smiling lady came back holding a tray which had my coffee on and a home made biscuit on the side nice touch the coffee was hot and very taisty. when i had finished i went back to reception and soid goodbye the receptionist asked me if everything was alright i replied superb. i was only in the parsonage for a short while but it was well worth it i will do it again ( I asked the receptionist for everyone's name)

Booked last minute for a meeting locally, what a lovely place . Great facilities, really quaint place full of character, helpful staff with a late checkout meaning that I could work for a couple of hours before leaving for my meeting. Also really cracking breakfast which set me up for the day. Will definitely use again if I’m up this way !

We visited the above hotel for a function. All the food was served from cold to tepid. Service was dier. The starter of soup would have been good if had been warm. The main course of beef and yorkshire pudding - the beef on the table was either well done or very rare. The puddings were like cardboard. Service very poor and not organised.

Upon getting there the lady on reception didn't look up from her computer screen to greet us or acknowledge we had arrived. The afternoon tea was nothing special, all pre-made which was something we assumed when our stand arrived with some of the cling film still attached and then confirmed when another guest was complaining about the lack of choice or movement on changing a sandwich due to allergies. The member of staff advised they were unable to change them as they were all pre-made...What kind of hotel and spa doesn't have facilities to make up a sandwich freshly? Also, the shortbread was soft and stale due to being kept in the fridge with the cream and compote. The sandwiches had been made for some time, there was no fruit scone (just plain) and no cream cheese or mustard to be seen as declared on the menu. I wouldn't recommend it at all.

Decided as the family away for Christmas we would have Christmas Lunch out for the first time. Wanted somewhere out of town but not far and chose this venue. Expected a premium rate for Christmas Day. Generally was well worth it. Started with Champagne and canapés . Three choices of starter - we all had Duck and Wild mushroom terrine - well presented and well received. We all had the soup - sweet potatoe and thyme, again very tasty. Two of us had Sirloin of Beef with vegatable’s -plenty of it, including the Beef, well presented and well received. The other had Roast Turkey and vegetable’s. Well presented, just a bit spark with the turkey breast. All disappointed no black pepper available. Chosen sweets included cranberry and orange cheesecake with ice cream the other being Christmas pudding roulade with a dark rum sauce. Both well presented, perhaps plentifull for some but a bit space for others. Finally finished off with choice of tea or coffee with with two small mince pies for three of us! Generally well presented and well received all round. Great experience for Christmas Day lunch out with plenty of room between tables.

Having booked this with superbreak we were unsure of the hotel so near york but the area was so lovely. We had a room off the main pathway with a huge bathroom and looking out on a courtyard. We had afternoon tea on arrival and it was served by a lovely lady who could not do enough for us. The cream tea was lovely and filled a gap till we ate in the Lascelles Restaurant in the evening. That meal was outstanding and we loved the ambience of the restaurant. We sat in the conservatory the next morning for coffee watching the terrible winds gust around us and watched the local wildlife. Having the Fat Abbot pub on site was a great bonus and the real ales and fantastic food on offer was outstanding. We will definitely be back again as we had such a great experience.

Just home from a lovely 2 night anniversary break at the Parsonage. We booked this through Superbreak and it included dinner on the first night and afternoon tea. The hotel is lovely. On entering there is a beautiful staircase and with all the Xmas decorations and tree at the base it liked beautiful and welcoming. Our room was a traditional style with a 4 poster bed plenty drawers and hanging space. Clean and the decor matched the style. Bathroom had a corner jacuzzi bath and the opposite corner had a shower cubicle with a good working shower. Again very clean with lovely soft towels and toiletries provided. There is a small bar downstairs, drawing room and a spacious conservatory to the rear - all nicely decorated. All staff were friendly, professional and very helpful. We used the Spa on the afternoon of our first day and it was quiet, very clean and very relaxing. The restaurant was closed on our first night so our dinner was served at the pub next door - The Fat Abbott (please see our review, this didn't disappoint!) We had afternoon tea on our second afternoon and again no complaints. All food including breakfast is fresh, well presented and tasty. Thank you Parsonage we had a lovely break and will return.

This year it was great to use the spa and it's great facilities. We had a lovely massage. Its not very busy so it's great to make use of all of the facilities. The Fat Abbot pub is a welcome addition also. I'd like to see a few more snacks as it seemed to have lots of lovely bigger meals. We stayed for one night and I had the Marigold room which was nice and big, huge bathroom. However being 6'2 my feet were out the end of the bed! Also the mattress was far to soft for me but that's just a personal view. The floorboards were creaky as well but made it a little quirky. Good tea tray biscuits were great! We ate in the bar at night and had the burger very nice!I got up early for a swim and had the pool to myself, bliss. Then buffet breakfast, which was not fully stocked and not great to be honest.Sausages looked pale not dark brown, long blonde hair in the scrambled egg and that was dry and a little grey?Croissants with no Nutella either! It was a basic breakfast but could have been so much better. The hot plates had really hot ceramic lids which you have to lift off to see what's inside, may I suggest clear lids?Anyway I forgot my charger and a really nice young girl on reception 21/06 lent me hers to charge my phone, excellent customer service and very friendly, an asset to the hotel. We stayed here for three nights with friends in the Coach House Suite which was in a separate building next to the pub. The room was large and comfortable but could do with a bit of updating. Unfortunately the wifi didn't work very well. The spa was excellent. The staff were good and some were fantastic. Michele from the cleaning team went out of her way to tell us about York and even gave us a bus timetable ( which Is a good way to get there). The staff in the Main bar and in the pub as well as the Spa were very friendly and chatty. The food in the restaurant was good but we preferred the atmosphere and food in the pub. The hotel management could usefully do some training with their main restaurant staff to bring them up to the standard of the others. For example, service at breakfast was so slow and my porridge was served well after the cooked breakfast rather than before it. But overall we would be happy to stay there again.

Fantastic spa weekend, we stayed one night and our package included use of spa facilities so as we had arrived before we could check in we left our bags in reception and went to the spa, we had the afternoon there, treatment and afternoon tea in the spa, though this was quite busy as it was Saturday so I would recommend asking to have the afternoon tea in the conservatory. When we went back to the main hotel our bags had been taken to our room and we were escorted to our room. The room was a pleasant, very spacious, with large double doors that went out into the beautiful gardens, The evening meal was lovely as was breakfast and the staff were exceptionally helpful and friendly. We took a bus from directly outside the hotel into York itself which took about 15 minutes and was £5 return, they run every fifteen minutes and meant we were able to have a few cheeky cocktails in the City, however the hotel has a pub onsite called the Fat Abbot so you don't have to stay in the hotel bar, which incidentally is lovely, cosy and full of atmosphere.

Booked through Superbreaks on a package deal, and we're delighted with the deal, two nights bed and breakfast, afternoon tea and evening dinner on the first night, plus use of the onsite spa and pool. On approach it does look a lovely old house set in its own spacious grounds, plenty of car parking too. Friendly and helpful staff made check in easy ( I had upgraded to a four poster room as a surprise ). Our room on the second floor was spacious and a lovely four poster. Nice bathroom with plenty of room and a good shower. Only negative was a tiny TV in a huge cabinet too far away to see from the bed ! This is a very characterful building with plenty of history and original features, the bar area and sitting room are very cosy and traditional. Our afternoon tea was brilliant ! Much better than we were expecting..We ate in the in house dining room (see separate review), breakfast was a buffet style which I usually do not like but this was excellent, great quality and cooked freshly with a good choice of fresh fruit cakes jams and cereals. The full salmon with prawns really stood out as being amazing, we also enjoyed, sirloin of beef, York ham, salads, cous cous, stuffed mini jacket potatoes, asparagus and dips followed by a selection of yummy desserts. We had read mixed reviews so decided to try the Fat Abbott for ourselves. It is part of the Parsonage complex and is billed as a Gastro Pub. Good impressions on first arrival with a lot of good beers on. A must for a good pub. My favourite Timothy Taylor's Landlord drank very nicely. We were promptly seated at a nice table with plenty of room. Not always the case in some pubs. Orders were taken without any hassle or over waiting. So far so good. Starters came and everyone in our party enjoyed them. 2 duck spring rolls, one monkfish scampi and one soup. The duck was great with some nice touches such as pickled cucumber rolled around diced chorizo. Onto the mains. 2 fish and chips, one pork belly and one Steak and onion pie. All looked great again. The young waitress forgot the tartare sauce and vinegar. A must for fish and chips for me. Another waitress and then a waiter soon picked up on this before too long. It was brought up and what was nice was the waiter said he was taking the price of our bottle of wine off the bill due to our wait. We had neither waited too long or complained. Excellent attention to the customer. Only two of us had dessert and both went for Creme Brûlée with peanut brittle and stout ice cream. It was top notch. I can't recommend it enough. We paid £97 for 4 with pre dinners drinks and the courses mentioned. Not overpriced and very enjoyable. I did hear someone complain that their pulled pork sandwhich had gone soggy on the bottom, but only after they'd eaten it all and isn't this what bread is for? To soak up gravy, etc. They were offered a replacement even though it had been mostly eaten. Go figure. So in summary, if like me you live locally and had heard mixed reports, then go find out for yourself. Some people are hard to please, but our experience was very nice. We will return.

We ate at the Parsonage's new venture, The Fat Abbot, for my wife's birthday. The service was good and from what we'd read on the website, we expected good food.Sadly the bar area is reminiscent of a tired old hotel/airport lounge. I'm not sure why it has been designed this way, but when we were handed the menu, its 70s design makes you wonder what they were thinking. The eating area is designed much better.I ordered the rack of lamb and my wife ordered the sea bass. The language of the menu doesn't transcribe well to the food we received. I don't know if by the definition of gastro-pub they think that they can overcharge for dishes and under-deliver?Each additional component of the dish that sounded interesting on the menu, was delivered as a meagre portion. The components didn't live up to menu's description and didn't deliver on flavour or add to the dish. For example: Rack of Lamb - lowna dairy goats curd, wild garlic, broad bean, roasted aubergine and beetroot gnocci. £18.95!!!The lamb and breadcrumbed curd were 'ok', but nothing special. The wild garlic must have been the tasteless, greeny-brown slime under the lamb. The broad beans were halves of broad beans, of which there were about 8 (so maybe 4 whole broad beans?) and were completely unremarkable. The roasted aubergines were 2 tissue paper thin aubergine crisps about the size of a 50p coin each, nice, but completely non-existent. The beetroot gnocci tasted of average gnocci, couldn't identify any beetroot at all. The gravy accompanying all of this I could best describe as 'hotel gravy', sweet, boring, tasteless. It was the same for my wife's meal, tiny portions of fish and not much flavour.Massively meagre portions for the price and definitely not gastro-pub quality. It feels offensive when you're given a cost cutting meal and charged Michelin starred prices.Hopefully they'll sort the food out and/or make the pricing more realistic.

The hotel itself is lovely, the rooms are large and pleasant. If the facilities were not part of the price then overall the value would be down. However, for the price you pay it is not always reflected.

Both soup and terrine starters were enjoyed, and five clean plates from roast turkey and herb-crusted salmon spoke for themselves. It was tasty with a bitter edge from the sorrel.Equally most mains are roast beef and so it came to pass. Quality of the rib beef was superb - although I prefer mine a bit rarer. the quantity was truly Yorkshire. Roasts pretty good. Vegs average but many types. The best was yet to come. No deserts just an excellent cheeseboard - Stilton, Wensleydale, Brie, Gouda and something else. Only thing missing were oatcakes.Best mass catering meal (in excess of 150 people) have had for years.

Situated just off the A19 just 3.3 miles from the A64 York Ring Rd this is a lovely haven of peace and quiet in a splendid country house. The 50 ensuite rooms are well appointed and the restaurant is decent enough. There is wifi in all rooms and public areas and a relaxing spa adjoining which is a bonus. Local businesses use it for meetings and seminars as well. There is a pub in Escrick village that serves decent food called the Black Bull and a Thai restaurant 100yds up the road. Local amenities include a BP garage and mini supermarket as well as a post office.Lots of people use this as a base outside town for York races as well. York city centry is around 8 miles away - which you can get the bus to or drive to the Park and RIde 3 miles from the hotel which is part of the very popular Designer Outlet.

I really wanted a decent espresso at the end of a great meal but they only had filter coffee. Apart from that it is a 5 point place to eat. Try the Monkfish.

It doesn't really matter what time of the year you go however, rain & mist give a good idea of what it felt at the time people died of consumption - including some of the Brontes. Take time to visit the grave yard outside the parsonage to get loads of atmosphere too. I took a blind visitor & even they could feel the brooding quality of this Victorian home. A must visit in Yorkshire

I treated my mum to afternoon tea at the hotel as a belated 'Mothers Day' treat. The staff at reception were very friendly and told us we could sit in the conservatory or the Drawing room. We chose the Drawing room as it was a little quieter. There was background music which normally is very pleasant, but my mum has hearing aids and finds it difficult to hear when that is playing. I asked a member of staff if it was possible to turn the speakers off in the room as we were the only ones in there at the time. They were very obliging and understood immediately. The tea was lovely, only one thing was that there was too much for us I asked, a bit tongue in cheek if we could take it with us. The staff said certainly and brought something for us to carry it in. All in all a very enjoyable experience. I would visit here again

See hotel review. Very poor quality food plate service slapped in front of you. The starters were small and the main course, only a choice of three, salmon, chicken and veggie, no meat were served with over boiled potatoes and soggy runny vegetables. Very small portions.

We were recommended this hotel by a couple we recently met on holiday as we wanted somewhere with good food in a quiet relaxing atmosphere. It was a family reunion with a cousin and her husband whom we had not seen for over 50 years!!The Parsonage met our every expectation and we had a three hour undisturbed catch up. The food was very good, reasonably priced and the staff were very friendly and efficientThe location was convenient with pleasant grounds and good parking

20 of us spa and afternoon tea!!!! Had an absolutely fantastic time. Facilties excellent. Afternoon tea gorgeous - although might be nice if they offered Prosecco or fizzy wine - rather than just tea/coffee/juice...robes and slippers are lush!! Pool and jacuzzi great.

Bit of a belated review but my partner and I had Christmas Day lunch here and loved every bit of it. Food was well prepared, tasty and just right in terms of portion sizes, not too much, not too little. Staff were polite, attentive, we didn't feel rushed at any point. First time I have eaten here but I will be going back soon.

Nice and relaxed in the Hotel lounge, a really nice pre-Christmas treat with my friend. I liked the variety of sandwiches and the gorgeous scones. It would have been nice if the scones had been warm and served with clotted instead of whipped cream but I'm not really complaining as they were huge.

We bought a Groupon Voucher for a two night stay at ths hotel on a bed and breakfast tarrif with afternoon tea and a free bottle of bubbly. The service with the afternoon tea was disappointing - our order was 'forgotten' but we enjoyed it and our stay here. We ate in the restaurant on one evening and thoroughly enjoyed our meal and would recommend the restaurant and hotel. . We also enjoyed the pool and spa. The hotel has been refurbed in parts and some areas are a little tired but overall very good on all counts and we will defintely return.

Having read previous reviews, my husband and I ventured into the restaurant unsure of what to expect. We both ate from the set menu and found to food to be very well prepared. The pudding that we both chose (tiramasu) was a little rich for our tastes and rather heavy on gelatine.Service was fast and friendly without being over-imposing. This was not the best restaurant that I have ever visited but certainly fine if you do not want to venture from your hotel.

My husband and I often have dinner at The Parsonage as it is within walking distance of our home. We've never been disappointed. We usually opt for their two-course option which offers plenty of choice. The bread is always fresh and tasty and the chef's appetiser is always a treat. The waitresses are always friendly and the service is spot on. We feel the prices are not 'over the top' and the menu offers good value for money. I can highly recommend the Parsonage restaurant.

Really lovely. Clean room with all you need including a good quality wall-mounted tv, comfy beds and friendly staff. Nice areas to sit inside and have a chat, although the large (posh) sun room did remind me a bit of a residential home! Excellent breakfast-basically had a whole salmon (smoked) with my poached eggs and toast. You can choose what you like. Excellent service. Food in the evening is superb, particularly the little appetiser of three different hams (crunchy bacon, melt in your mouth belly pork etc) although stay away from the soused mackerel (as obviously it is soused, I did not know what this was..).

We have stayed in this hotel several times in the past but in our view it only gets better. From the moment we entered the door the staff made us feel welcome. The rooms are spacious, clean and well furnished with a good powerful shower which is absolutely essential especially after a long drive. When we asked for more milk and sugar to make additional cups of tea and coffee the staff were only too happy to oblige and offered a choice of fresh or long life milk. (Fresh every time!)We had not previously dined at the hotel but a decision had made to do so on this occasion. We were able to select our food at leisure in the bar before entering the dining room and the food was absolutely excellent. In fact it was the best meal we have had in a restaurant for a very long time! We weren't disappointed with the breakfast either which was of a similar standard. If we had to make one slight criticism then we would say that the mattress on the bed was slightly firmer than we would have wished but this is purely a matter of preference and what we are used to.

Came heere for an afternoon Yorkshire Cream tea as a birthday treat for the mother-in-law. The spread was fabulous, a selection of finger sandwiches with quality fillings, scones/jam/cream and a selection of cake slices. Beautifully presented and served in a lovely setting.
